The Underdog Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I will start it. I have until May 2011 to pass Step2ck or I will never be a doctor. ever.

Thanks for the assist Hockey! I have researched the CIB and most of the adcom Web pages. I did not know about the Application Instruction Manual. Great info!
Shelly, good luck!

I took a look at the front page and saw that I have not updated since December. On Friday I have some time to update everything.

If anyone wants me to add their info to the front page with their stats / interviews / acceptances, either pm me or post on here by Friday

I will try and update everything so anyone curious has a good idea how this cycle turned out for all of us. Also, if you want your info taken off for whatever reason, pm me. Congrats everyone 👍

Haha I said a few pages back that I would start up a new one in May(ish) but if someone else is volunteering by all means go ahead. Just keep up to date with it!

No offense to either of you, but I would assume a pre-med would have more free-time available to do such a thing than a MS4 that has to study for Step 2 and prepare to apply to residencies. IMO DJack should do it if he's willing to for the previous reason, and because he's going through the med school application process this upcoming cycle.

Best of luck Shelly! 🙂

I don't really have that many updates. Just an interview invite at ATSU-SOMA and an acceptance at Touro-CA.

Thanks for doing this HockeyDr 🙂

haha thankx man! you going to the ATSU-SOMA interview?

I've been sick the past few days so I haven't really thought about it, but I'm leaning towards no. I really want to interview at a few other schools (AZCOM, DMU, PCOM, NYCOM, maybe a couple others), so unless I get those my application cycle is most likely over.

When's your LMU interview?

its been a while since i've posted here,

for those that have finalized on where they will be attending in fall, post it up, as for me I'll hopefully know in a couple of days.

How did your COMP interview go?

Hey guys, its finally time for me to throw my name into the ring as an underdog. My first app cycle is starting up now, so lets keep fingers crossed!

My stats so far:

3.1 cGPA 3.0 sGPA

Starting MCAT prep at the end of the month for the May sitting.

best advice I can give you is: APPLY EARLY, VERY EARLY.

I forgot what the defination of an underdog is, but I advice you kill the MCAT so you don't have to be like us! It was great being an underdog and being in this thread and seeing soo many sucess stories, but its bad for your health and I highly recommend you apply extra early and kill the MCAT so you don't have to wait till Feb like some of us for interviews!

THE BEST ADVICE YOU CAN GET EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT AN UNDERDOG! APPLY EARLY! It does make a difference, a HUGE HUGE HUGE DIFFERENCE![/QUOTE]

I am taking this to heart and getting my ducks in a row now. Thank you for the help! Must get off SDN and continue my Chem review....

You are only an underdog if you believe your an underdog. Have faith, work hard, be positive, and you will reach your goal. If you get an interview, then that school believes you can handle med school. Once you have an interview, then you are your best salesman.

I agree with all this, it is nice to say you beat the odds but it really makes the application cycle that much more worse. On top of the terrible waiting game you have that gut feeling that each time your file is looked at you are being sat aside for a later date because of your numbers. Somehow I pulled off 3 acceptances (OUCOM, PCSOM, VCOM-Carolina) with a 21 MCAT and a 3.85 GPA. It almost feels as if I won the lottery multiple times over and I still wonder at how times I how was able to accomplish this. I know my story is rare but this just shows you it can be done and some schools really do look at other things than just numbers.

Wow congratulations!! Have you chosen a school?

hey guys ^^

Not getting much of a response in the school specific thread, so I thought I'll give this thread a try since it worked with my other school specific questions.

These questions are about the secondaries for PCOM and PCOM-GA.

As for this "What health care related experiences have you had," can I just attach my full CV and say "please refer to my CV"? If not, can the response be in list (bullet points) form or have to be in paragraph form? I'm not sure how detailed they want for each experience.

Also, are there separate AdComs for the PA and GA campuses? I was hoping to use similar responses on the two secondaries, but may need to change things up a bit if it's the same group of people.

thanks!

Hello everyone!

Wanted to check back in and let everyone how it's been going. I am an underdog who applied late in the game. I'm getting some action and things are hopeful. Here's a link to my stats from earlier in this thread: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=10216316&postcount=1251

I did not complete any secondaries until late November. And even then, mist were done in December.

Anyway, I've been waitlisted at AZCOM, rejected Pre-interview at LECOM-B, KCOM, and CCOM.

I have long held SOMA as my undisputed #1 choice of school. And I got my secondary submitted to the school on Thursday (Feb 10th) and was invited for interview the next day. Flying out for my interview this coming weekend.

Please send me some good underdog luck!

Hey, I'm new here. 🙂 I've been around reading threads like a stalker for about two months, but my friend told me I should join.

I have a 23 MCAT and approximately 3.0 GPA. I'm in a Masters program at UMDNJ for people who plan on med/dent school. I had to retake a class though, which probably doesn't look very good, and I should retake Physics II and Orgo II as well...
Basically, I think I am out of luck, unless I retake my MCAT, and those 2 classes.

I've gotten a rejection from KC-UMB and AZ-COM, but haven't really heard anything else yet. I know I should have; I just wish they'd send the rejections out already so I know what I'm doing in the fall.
(I also applied to PCOM PA and Ga, UMDNJ-SOM, NYCOM, Pikeville, West Virginia, AT Still- AZ, and Oklahoma.)

Should I email or call these schools to check my status and restate my deep interest, or is that going to be construed as harassment?
Oh, and by the way, I submitted my applications January 6th, if that matters at all.

Hi!
Well, just to get your money's worth out of the application fees, you should do yourself a favor and call the schools that you haven't heard from. I know that UMDNJ-SOM says they will completely throw out your undergrad GPA and only focus on you your grad GPA if you did it in a hard science (so that's something to keep in mind).

And it does matter that you submitted Jan.6th bc SDN will tell you that that's a lil late (a lot actually).

Okay, so I should contact them then. Thank you for the prompt and kind response! And I don't know why but I had no idea UMDNJ-SOM did that. 😵

As for the late application...I have seen people on here drilling it into others' heads not t apply late, but I had no choice, I had to wait until I had enough money to apply. Both my parents are out of work right now, so my part-time job is basically supporting a family of 6, since there are all sorts of unemployment pay issues I'm not even going to go into. I know the schools don't care, they just see a late application, but I had virtually no choice.
What I meant was, how much does it really matter for the schools... I mean, does a late application typically lead to rejections, etc. I know it must lower my chances.

I also meant, I applied late, so maybe that's why I hadn't heard back yet? I wouldn't know...but maybe they just haven't gotten to me, or gotten to make a decision yet since I applied so late is what I was wondering. That's why I asked if that was relevant info and if it matters.

-sighs- I should probably just start at law school in the fall, then reapply either for the upcoming cycle or the one after that. (Law school because I want to be a DO but also want to work in bioethics...I'm aware I probably just come off as a money hungry b***h even mentioning law and med though, but oh well. Not my intention.)

The UMDNJ-SOM thing , I found out about at their open house.Which by the way, you should go to if you want to go there. They take note of that, I think.

Wait....Law School? Warning: I've heard around SDN that adcoms don't like to take students that are not at the end of the their degree programs. So if you're in your first year of obtaining a law degree and apply for a D.O. program, it might look as if you are unsure as to what you really want to do:medicine or law. I suppose you could mention that you want to work in bioethics in your personal statement. If that's true you ought to finish and get your law degree first or wait to get into a D.O. school first.

I'm sorry that you had to apply late. If you apply again, apply for a fee waiver early in the season(and I mean early, like as soon as they let you) because they[AACOMAS] run out of fee waivers fast and hopefully that will help with your financial situation.

Sorry for the self bump, but any info from PCOM applicants would be greatly appreciated XD

When I first saw this thread I thought it would be so cool to be able to post something positive. I guess now I finally can.

sGPA: 2.93 MCAT: 27S

Interviews at PNWU and COMP-Pomona last year and PNWU and COMP-NW this year. Last year I totally crashed and burned in the interviews. This year I'm part of the way through an SMP at AZCOM (well, technically MWU-Glendale) and while it's helped, I am not spectacular.

Just was accepted today at PNWU and I have a good feeling from my COMP-NW interview.

To all the in-progress underdogs, it can be done.

Hey just trying to get an idea on my shots at school:
Stats: NJ resident
UG: BioMed Engineer at GWU GPA: 3.05 sGPA: 3.0
MCAT: 24

Schools: PCOM, Tuoro-NY, NYCOM, and UMDNJ
(Stat wise i think i only have a shot at Tuoro/PCOM)

Thoughts?

Tell us about the rest of your application. Numbers, while very important, won't get you into DO school by themselves.

Underdogs need stellar everything else to have a realistic shot.

you've still got time at this point for some grade replacement and an MCAT retake. your numbers are very mediocre on both accounts (gpa/mcat). for example, the minimum at touro is a 3.0 and a 24, so you're cutting it close.

also, if you're serious about getting into medical school you should consider adding more schools to your list.

Congrats...you must have had a well rounded application with ecxellent ECs, LOR etc...What was your overall GPA? People usually mention overall GPA in this thread.

My cGPA is ~2.90. I'm in the midst of an SMP at MWU-Glendale (cGPA-3.4). I think AACOMAS just calculated my sGPA for both grad/undergrad at 3.0.

My overall application is ok, I guess. I've worked in healthcare for a while, volunteered, taught (in my field), etc. While I haven't read my LORs, I would like to think that they are pretty good. The people that wrote for me got to know me well professionally and academically and I assume that it showed.

Also, I did apply fairly strategically to schools I know I would have a better chance at. After a long road it's all come together. I feel pretty lucky.

is it possible to apply in early July get rejected and apply to the same place with a higher MCAT score in early October?

Once you've been rejected you're through at that school for the rest of the application cycle.

It is possible to update schools with new grades/activities/MCAT score(s) though.
