I know this is the DO underdog thread, and I considered myself an underdog with a cGPA of 3.5 and a sGPA of 3.2 and an MCAT of 26 (11V 9BS 6PS<--the problem) but I just got an interview at University of South Carolina. I know it is an allopathic school, so it's not really relevant here, but I figure if I am an underdog for DO, I am a HUGE underdog for MD, and I got an interview. So, DON'T GIVE UP! I was so close to withdrawing all my apps for this cycle after I got my MCAT score back...I even reconsidered if I thought I could actually do this...and today a tiny interview from heaven ends up in my inbox. Keep on keepin' on!

I have a 2.95sci (I rounded up on the front page, shhh). I was only screened from DMU and VCOM. (I didn't apply to NSU, I believe in the CIB it claims they are pretty strict). You should be fine.

well thats good to hear, because I was told I will receive a secondary if my new score is 24 or higher. So I guess that means I will get an interview as well.

nothing to get too excited about tho because first I need to do better on the mcat and I hear they interview a lot of candidates and wait list a lot of them.

Attention! Let's establish criteria to be an underdog .

I like this formula: MCAT/2 + aGPA*10 = Applicant Score

(The "aGPA" here is the average of your cumulative and science GPA)

The average applicant (according to the 2011 CIB: 26.19 MCAT, 3.48 cGPA, 3.38 sGPA) will then have their "applicant score" as 47.4, as per the formula: 26.19/2 + 3.43(3.48 cGPA, 3.38 sGPA) = 47.4

To be an underdog, let's say you have to have a 46 or below as your "Applicant Score"? Someone with a 46 "Applicant Score" could have a:

24 MCAT with a 3.40 aGPA (possibly a 3.45 cGPA, 3.35 sGPA)
26 MCAT with a 3.30 aGPA (possibly a 3.35 cGPA, 3.25 sGPA)
28 MCAT with a 3.20 aGPA
30 MCAT with a 3.10 aGPA

I like this formula as well. Here's my breakdown to qualify as an underdog:

24 MCAT (9ps,9v,6b) 3.47 cGPA, 3.25 sgpa = 24/2 + 3.36*10 = 45.6

currently on hold at LECOM-B pending my new mcat score

I have taken the MCAT twice in the span of a year, and my score actually went down from a 22 to a 20. I studied, but was also distracted with family troubles and other school work. I have a decent GPA 3.55 (overall), and 3.45 (sciences). I have enormous amount of volunteer experience both medical and community oriented. I have also worked in a hospital as a Nurse tech for over a year. I'm a very dedicated individual, so I'm just stress as to why I can't do well on the MCAT. I'm planning on taking the MCAT again, and I'm scoring 24-27 range on my practice tests.

I am almost done with my application for this cycle both allo and osteopathic, and I donno if I should send in my application. I don't want to waste my money applying now if I can't get in. What do you guys think I should do?

Study harder and do better on the MCAT, honestly. Going down is going to look terrible to schools and a 22 isn't great to begin with. I would go research the MCAT forum and do everything you can to get a better MCAT score. It's a test that will give you results the more effort you put into it so just work hard on it. If you can see yourself getting a 24-25+ with a test in the next month or two I would still apply this cycle and tell schools to wait on your new scores. Good luck 🙂

current graduate GPA = 3.75

cGPA - 3.41= undergrad

current sGPS - 3.5ish = haven't completed all of them yet

MCAT = haven't taken it yet.

Airborne, unless you get <25 on the MCAT you won't be an underdog. Make sure you stay focused and finish strong and you'll do well.

ok so i put my numbers into the formula and i got a 48.45 which i know doesn't "qualify" me as an underdog but i really thing that i am!!

i am in need of some advice pleasee!!

my stats are:
science GPA: 3.6
nonscience GPA: 3.69
MCAT: ps:8 vr:7 bs:9 overall:24R

I am registered to retake in 3 weeks (aug. 19) but i just cant seem to get myself going again. i studied the first time for like 6 months, took the kaplan course and was scoring 28-30 on practice tests. The 24 was devastating, but I'm feeling a little hopeless that retaking wouldn't really improve my score that much, definitely not enough for MD programs.

Do I have a chance at DO with these stats?? I also have almost 5 years working at a podiatrists office, tons of volunteer experience in hospitals, research experience, and school activities. Should i just apply with this score or do I absolutely need to retake if I want to get in?

Any advice is appreciated

p.s. i also have a disciplinary warning (which is the lowest disciplinary action there is at my scool) against me for an alcohol violation that i need to discuss on my app (not too happy about that...)

With your GPA, I don't think that knowing the material on the MCAT is all of your problem. Have you taken the AAMC MCAT practice tests? In my experience, they are the best way to prepare for the MCAT after you've studied the material. They are worth their cost and if you haven't taken them yet, I would strongly recommend taking all of them in preparation for your retake. Good luck.

I think you're ok but you NEED to apply earlyyyyy and broaddllyyyy, It's pretty late in the current cycle, so I would hold off until submitting your app until next cycle.

if you apply early enough nxt year, you should nab some interviews!

With your GPA, I don't think that knowing the material on the MCAT is all of your problem. Have you taken the AAMC MCAT practice tests? In my experience, they are the best way to prepare for the MCAT after you've studied the material. They are worth their cost and if you haven't taken them yet, I would strongly recommend taking all of them in preparation for your retake. Good luck.

thanks for the advice.. unfortunately i did take all the AAMC tests, plus 7 of the Kaplan tests and was doing alright on them (generally 28-30). I really don't know what went wrong test day...i felt calm and confident and like i really knew all the answers! Im just gonna blame it on a really hard curve haha

This thread just shows not to always take the advice of people on SDN, it's a good support group, but go with what you want. I was told not to apply by several people, and I have already had one interview at LECOM and a possible interview at TUCOM.

Just remember: whoever tells you that you can't do something is wrong. If you are willing to work for it, you'll get it. I had 9 rejections in 2008 without interviews, and have 6 rejections already in hand this year. One admission is all it takes!

Okay so my app just got released and man kinda bummed. I didnt know they would count the grades of my repeats in progress until my repeats were done. Right now my sGPA is 2.85 but after this summer it should be around 3.2. I hope schools actually look at the updated apps and dont just toss me away cause of the 2.85 they will see originally.

You cannot until your primary has been released to schools by AACOMAS. After it has been sent, it will show you the date and allow you to see the document that was sent to them which will show your verified cGPA and sGPA.
