Hi everyone, this is my first post in this forum though I've followed it for a while already.
I'm applying this year, so it would be great if you can give me your opinion.

a. Schools you are applying to: All schools in California, except Loma Linda.
b. Overall GPA: 3.95, from CSUN.
c. Math/Science GPA: roughly the same
d. GPA in last one or two school years: 3.98
e. Complete PCAT scores (or just composite): No PCAT
f. Pharmacy experience obtained: only 5 months as volunteer at CVS-6 hours/week, and one semester volunteer at the student health center.
g. Date of application submission (PharmCAS/primary and secondary): I submitted PharmCas around 7/20 and I've just finished my supplemental application for Touro, UOP and USC.

Additionally, the following will help us gauge your chances but are more optional:
h. Number of LORs and source of LORs: 2 from my chemistry and microbio professors, 1 from the pharmacist where I volunteer and 1 from the Chemistry Department Chair of the community college where I work.
i. Non-pharmacy work and/or volunteer experience: 4 years as a server, 3 years as a chem lab assistant, 4 years as a college tutor, volunteer at Senior Center for the last 2 months.
j. Self-perception of interview skills: not that great. I'm not very confident about my English, let it be writing or oral... But hopefully, with practice, I will improve.
k. Overall impression of personal statement quality: I think it is okay.

As I only applied to CA schools, I know their requirement are quite high compared to other schools that require PCAT. I know my GPA is decent, but it's from CSUN, so it's not that impressive really. As I have to go to school fulltime when working 35hrs/week, I don't have that much time for EC. I also don't hold any official leadership tittle. The schools I really want to go to are USC and UCSF. What are my chances for those schools? Should I apply to more schools?
Thank you so much for your help.

What is CSUN? is it a california state university?

is a MIP a misdemeanor? (Minor in Possession of Alcohol)

I think that depends on the amount. Was is a KEG or a 12 oz? Either way, I'm sure it will be ok since you were a minor. If you go to the court an get a case report printout, it will explain your charges.

If they ask about it after getting accepted then I can explain myself. What I worry about is that they would reject me just based on the arrest record; that is why I am asking if they ask for your arrest record during the application process. Thank you for your input.

From what I understand (for pharmacy anyway), the process is:

1. Application
2. Interview
3. Acceptances (or not)
4. Background Check
5. Student Intern License (most likely on your 2nd year if going to a 4 year program, 1st year for a 3 year program).

Either way, I think you should be fine, just as long as you don't get arrested anytime soon. 🙂

IN California at least, for your intern license you'll need to declare if you've ever been arrested and if so, what the circumstances were, etc... regardless of how much time has elapsed since that occurrence.

But, that said, I have a hard time believing they'd deny you an intern license based on a single arrest, unless it had something to do with stealing C-IIs or something.

i think for anyone who has a gpa over 3.4 shouldn't even have a second thought about applying. I have a 2.9 with a B.A. in Biology and I'm going to take a shot at it. I know I'm probably not even competitive and would be grateful if anyone even looks at my application, but I'm not giving up hope. If i dont' get in this year, I'll take a year to improve my gpa and re-apply. I does not hurt to try. 😉

I've been a reader at SDN for a while but figured it's time I joined. 🙂

First question I have--does anyone know if the University of Utah is on rolling admission? I read everything on their admission website and I believe they are not, but I would like to confirm. I tried googling and searching on SDN but couldn't find an answer.

And now, here is my situation. If I could get some constructive advice, I'd highly appreciate it and will honor you for the rest of my life. I only recently decided I want to go to pharmacy school. I have a very good reason, which is personal/family-oriented and LONG so I won't go into details here. But I want to apply to start professional school Fall 2010.

I've registered to take the PCAT this October and have started studying. I've taking all prerequisite courses except 3, which include Microbiology, Human Physiology and Prof. Writing. This is my last year in college and I will be getting a BS in Biomedical Engineering come Spring 2010. My cumulative GPA is about 3.537, my science/math 3.3 something, and my pre-requisites for pharmacy 3.203 I think. Generally speaking, my math is excellent. I have never gotten any less than an A in any math classes, which has ultimately saved my freaking life. Organic chemistry is what had hurt me so badly. (I've never failed a class according to standards though I consider them failures myself.)

I've done tons and tons of volunteering, tutoring, working, research BUT the big problem is I have ZERO pharmacy experience. (Because I just decided.) Initially, I was heading for medical school. (Took my MCAT this summer and got a 37.) But after self-reflection for over 2+ months, I'm so absolutely positively sure I'm not fit and do not want to be a physician. I'm trying to ask around to see if I could get a clerk position at a pharmacy and then take the PTCB and get certified after finishing my applications. I'm actually also very confused about pharm. tech licensing. My friend said to take the PTCB, CPJE (State Law Test?), and 180 hrs of externship?

Would this look bad that I'm so behind in the game and is a turning-around-from-medical-school-with-a-good-reason person?

I've already contacted the admission adviser but just barely yesterday so I won't get her reply anytime before this horribly long and stressful weekend end. Therefore, any responses would be wonderful. I know I blabbed on for forever so thank you so much for even reading! 😀

EDIT
Side note. I also have a minor in Psychology though I doubt it really helps.

My writing skill is above average and I'm a grammar nerd, so I'm not too concerned about the strength of my PS. My interviewing skill is not very good though. I get nervous very easily and although I can come up with answers rather quickly, I tend to weave around the question instead of getting straight to the point. I'm quite sociable if I was talking to people I know, but strangers and professional people with more prestige and education than me? I suck at facing them.

I'm only applying to 3 schools this cycle. Utah, Seattle, and MCPHS-Boston.

Welcome!

Your friend sounds confused. Every state handles Tech licensing differently, so look up your local state Board of Pharmacy's website to see what they require. We don't even know where you are. 😛

Would this look bad that I'm so behind in the game and is a turning-around-from-medical-school-with-a-good-reason person?

I think I read that correctly. You must have a really good reason to have taken the MCAT (and gotten a 37!) and decided med school wasn't right for you. This is hard for us to talk about without a brief summary of your reason.

Otherwise, your stats look good.

a. Schools you are applying to: UofNM,UofWashington, UofA, Mass. - worcester, UofC Denver, Midwestern - Glendale

b. Overall GPA: 2.8 at ASU, 3.8 post bac...note: I have retaken all classes that were C's and below and have passed them all with A's

c. Math/Science GPA: around 3.9
d. GPA in last one or two school years: 4.0

e. Complete PCAT scores (or just composite): 87, with a 98 in bio, 97 in verbal, 80 reading comprehension, 68 chemistry (ouch), and a looowwww 30 in math. 3/3 on writing

f. Pharmacy experience obtained: 5+ years as a certified technician. Worked in retail for 1.5 years, 1 year in mail order, and the remaining time in the inpatient pharmacy at Mayo Clinic (prepared IVs, chemotherapy, compounded, etc.)

g. Date of application submission (PharmCAS/primary and secondary): 8/20

Additionally, the following will help us gauge your chances but are more optional:

h. Number of LORs and source of LORs: 3 letters...Inpatient pharmacy director (RPh) at Mayo Clinic, Critical Care Pharmacist at Mayo, and my chemistry professor who knows me really really well (had him for gen chem and o-chem and got A's in all his classes).

i. Non-pharmacy work and/or volunteer experience: lots of community service through the years. I was a mentor for at-risk youth, served/prepared food at various homeless shelters, volunteered in the pharmacy at St. Vincent de Paul, and had other extracurricular involvement during undergrad, including being a President of a club and being a founding sister for a sorority that was focused on community involvement. I also engaged in a lot of political activism.

j. Self-perception of interview skills: I have always interviewed very well (I DID get a job at Mayo Clinic without any hospital experience - which they usually require). I am a pretty confident person despite the fact I get nervous (who doesn't), but I usually maintain my composure very well and I have been told that no one can tell that I am nervous when I interview or give a speech.

k. Overall impression of personal statement quality: Every professor/pharmacist I have shown it to, loves it and my professor said it is MUCH better than most he has seen.

Additional info: I have a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from ASU (2006). I participated in undergrad research and took specialized coursework in pharmacology (B), bioethics (A), Health Psychology (A), Abnormal Psych (A), which I think pertain to the pharmacy field. I also took a lot of history/lit and social science courses in which I excelled. Most of my *bad* grades came from my freshman year when I partied a lot. I failed out and had to be readmitted. I retook all those courses and got A's in most of them, but I did stumble here and there along the way and got 2 F's that cannot be erased from my transcript (2 liberal arts classes) and brought down my GPA considerably. I also got a C in stats and a B in calc (my math skills are not exactly the best). My senior year at ASU, I got all A's and one B+ and since I graduated, I have only received A's (all courses taken at the community college level including microbiology, microeconomics, public speaking, anatomy/physiology, and chemistry).

Also, I was an idiot and got a DUI when I was 21 years old (blew a .08). I pleaded guilty, paid the fine, spent my night in jail, and went to the required alcohol and defensive driving classes. It has been five years and I haven't drank since (I swear!). In fact, the very smell of alcohol makes my stomach turn. Here in Arizona, the laws are pretty strict because of our wonderful Sheriff Joe Arpaio, but after five years, it drops off. I have a fingerprint clearance card, too.

OK...I think that about does it! One more thing: I am an underrepresented minority. I know this is not supposed to count, but I know two of the schools I am applying to look upon it favorably. As a political moderate, I don't really agree with this but whether or not I indicate it on my application won't matter because if I DO get an interview, they are obviously going to know that I am latina.

OK, WAMC? ... and thanks in advance for your input.

a. Schools you are applying to
U. of Montana (I am a resident)
b. Overall GPA
B.S. Mathematics 3.86
c. Math/Science GPA
Without calculating it, I suspect it's a little lower than above. I doubt more than 10% of my credits would not be considered Math/Science.
d. GPA in last one or two school years
3.9+ depending on whether my year of grad. school qualifies.
e. Complete PCAT scores (or just composite)
Not yet taken. Without sounding overconfident I'd guess ~80.
f. Pharmacy experience obtained
Shadowing to satisfy 60 hour requirement.
g. Date of application submission (PharmCAS/primary and secondary)

Additionally, the following will help us gauge your chances but are more optional:
h. Number of LORs and source of LORs
Mathematics Professor
Grad. School Professor
Boss (Research experience, Ed.D.)
i. Non-pharmacy work and/or volunteer experience
Undergrad. Research experience. Conference poster presentation.
One year graduate teaching assistant.
Part-time research position during summers.
Research lab assistant.
Volunteered past summer helping rescued animals.
Blood donor 👍
j. Self-perception of interview skills
I will be anxious. But, I feel I can do an adequate job of relating my motivations and strengths.
k. Overall impression of personal statement quality
Strong

Thanks! 😳

Your friend sounds confused. Every state handles Tech licensing differently, so look up your local state Board of Pharmacy's website to see what they require. We don't even know where you are. 😛

I looked up the Utah Board. Figured it out, haha. Thanks for the tip! I was so confused before.

I think I read that correctly. You must have a really good reason to have taken the MCAT (and gotten a 37!) and decided med school wasn't right for you. This is hard for us to talk about without a brief summary of your reason.

Otherwise, your stats look good.

Reason is one of my family members found out she has cancer and osteoporosis. Anybody would think this should drive me towards medical school even more, right, but no, it didn't. I realized the importance of drugs and found the background of each drug more and more interesting by the day. I've been exposed to a lot of drug development throughout my academic career, so I'm thinking of research pharmacist but when I get old and "dumb", retail wouldn't be a bad backup. Even so, I guess I didn't have to drop my so-called pediatric neurosurgeon route, but I did anyway because I realized, I will never be able to sit down for 2 hours to explain how the body works to a patient. That's just not who I am. I care about others' livelihood but I prefer a different day-to-day life, whether for my family's sake or my own sanity. I think that was "brief" enough. 😉

I finally got to talk to my adviser btw. I think I'll be okay. Thanks for the help!

Okay, so I just put in my early decision application to Virginia Commonwealth University on August 31st. Here is basically what my app looks like:

I'm getting a B.S. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Christopher Newport University.

a)Schools I am applying to (early decision): VCU
b)Overall GPA: 3.66 (including dual enrollment courses taken in high school)
c)Math/Science GPA: 3.7-3.72
d)GPA in one or two last school years: 3.75
e)PCAT score: 83 (taken Oct. 2008)
f)Pharmacy experience: 48 hours in small community pharmacy filling scripts, 56 hours at VA hospital pharmacy dispensing scripts
g)Date of application: August 31st, PharmCAS early decision
h)Number and source of LORs: 4; 1 from Pre-Health Committee at undergrad university ("outstanding student" rating), 1 from pharmacist/mentor, 1 from research mentor/biochem and cell professor (I got the highest grade in their biochem class), and 1 from a previous employer (I was a Chemistry laboratory assistant)
i)Non-pharmacy work and volunteer experience: Worked in chemistry lab as assistant from May 2007-September 2008-prepared laboratory solutions and set up labs; volunteered at both pharmacies
j)Fairly good in interview setting
k)Very personal personal statement; I personally think my story is touching.

Just a side note:

I'm very involved in extracurricular activities, as in I filled in 10/10 spaces in PharmCAS. Three of these extracurricular activities involve me being a leader. Two of them are also national honor societies. Two are also research projects.

Also, I've made Dean's List every semester of college. I also received a merit-based scholarship in biochemistry and cell biology.

Finally, I've been published in connection with my research projects.

So, what do y'all think my chances are?

One: I am a resident of Virginia. I'm not sure if that will weigh anything with VCU.

Two: I have a squeaky clean record. Not even a single traffic violation!

Thanks in advance 🙂

You look great to me. Never hurts to brush up on interviewing skills: use mock interviewing if it's available to you, or just practice talking in front of a mirror, or even a video camera.

thanks so much!!! i do feel like i would be more comfortable if i did work on interviewing a little more. thankfully, my pre-health committee at school did a mock interview before writing my letter of recommendation and we have mock interviewing available through our career services office. I will definitely have to make an appointment to do some mock interviewing with them!

Hi, I've slightly changed where I'm applying to and would like to re-evaluate my chances =)

a. Schools you are applying to: UCSD, UCSF, and UOP--I'm a CA resident and I'm only able to apply to these three schools based on the classes I've taken. I would take more classes, but I'm working full-time at the Red Cross which is really important to me, and it's too much to work and go to school.

b. Overall GPA: 3.65--Should be a bit higher now since I got As in econ and public speaking.

c. Math/Science GPA: 3.65--PharmCAS calculated that it's the same as my overall.

d. GPA in last one or two school years--A little bit lower, around 3.5? My grades went down a tad once I got more involved in extracurriculars.

e. Complete PCAT scores (or just composite)--I'm signed up for Oct. PCAT, but I'm probably not going to take it now that I'm only applying to CA schools.

f. Pharmacy experience obtained: Volunteered at the University Pharmacy for 1 semester-4 hours/week, shadowed a Clinical Pharmacist at UCSF.

g. Date of application submission (PharmCAS/primary and secondary): Submitted my PharmCAS on August 1st, but didn't get my transcripts in until Aug 31st. Got my UOP secondary in on August 1st, and will send in my UCSF and UCSD secondaries in October.

h. Number of LORs and source of LORs: 4 letters of rec--1 pharmacist from where I volunteered, 1 science professor I worked with for symposiums and community service events, 1 supervisor, and 1 professor whose lab I worked in.

i. Non-pharmacy work and/or volunteer experience: A lot of community service and public health/education/advising type positions--
*2 years leadership experience with American Cancer Society
*Worked as peer advisor in the dorms
*Sexual health peer advisor
*Habitat for Humanity
*Currently working with the American Red Cross through AmeriCorps

j. Self-perception of interview skills: I'm a pretty good interviewer, but this would be the most important interview of my life thus far, so I may be a bit nervous, but I still think I would do well.

k. Overall impression of personal statement quality: It's strong and honest, I feel that I have good reasons for choosing pharmacy and that it shows in my PS.

I was going to apply to some out of state schools before I got a job, but now it's just impossible for me to handle work, school, and studying for PCAT. I've put a lot of thought into it, and have decided that I should focus on the 3 schools I *really* want to go to and work. So what are my chances, honestly, for the schools I'm applying to? Am I crazy for only applying to 3?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated =)

Looking at MUSC (South Carolina), Washington University, Colorado University, and possibly Hawaii

BS of Biochemistry from Clemson University (May 2008)
3.4 Cumulative GPA
3.49 "Science GPA"
Taking PCAT in a month, have been studying and should do at least average/well. Good at these kinds of tests and have done well on practice tests.

I worked in a laboratory for 2 years as undergraduate. I did an internship at MUSC in a laboratory for one summer during my time as an undergrad. I did an undergraduate research project which consisted of 10 hours spent per week in a lab (on top of classes) for 1 year. I was president of the Clemson Biochemistry and Genetics Club for 1 year. And I've been working as a lab tech at MUSC for 1 year now and will continue for 1 more year before I (hopefully) go onto pharmacy school.

So I have lots of experience and a lot of it is actually AT MUSC. Does that look pretty good? Also, I'm a resident of South Carolina.

You are shortchanging yourself by only applying to three schools. Also, since you missed Tier 1 (and Tier 2?..since you're posting this now) for UOP, you have an even lesser chance. UCSD only takes 60 people and that in itself is not easy to get into and UCSF is #1. I don't doubt your abilities, but you could definitely increase your chances by applying more broadly.

Schools you are applying to: USC, UCSD, UCSF, Touro CA, Pacific U in Oregon, Colorado Denver, Maryland

Hi,

I'm going to be a junior at UCSD this fall. I'm majoring in biochem/chem, minoring in bio and on track to graduate June 2011.
I'm hoping to apply for pharm schools next summer.
Here goes my stats so far 🙁

Applying to (in 1 year): UCSD, UCSF, USC, UOP, WesternU (all the cali schools basically but I most likely won't make it to any)
//can someone recommend me out of state schools that would be a good match for me?

Total Units (graded): 117 graded units so far

Cumulative GPA: 3.27 (my goal is to raise this to 3.4 at least before applying)

my total number of units i am aiming to complete before applying is ~170 by next summer (203 by graduation in 2011)
so there is room for me to improve my gpa before applying next summer

Major GPA: ~3.18 (my upper div GPA is 3.4 though)
contributing factors:
i got bad grades in lower div classes (most are nonpharm prereqs.. donno if schools would be lenient or not)
C+/B/B in gen.chem (i know i f-ed this up... can't even justify it... was just lazy)
B+/B/B(lab)/C in physics (C = quantum physics //nonpharm prereq)
A/B+/B/C+ in calculus courses (B=multivar, C+ = differential equations //both nonpharm prereqs)

B-/A/A in o.chem (hope schools see my improvement and are lenient)
My other major classes taken so far have been an even mix of B+'s/A-'s/A's (more skewed towards B+)

Math/Science GPA: ~just slightly lower than major gpa
- same explanation as major gpa
- except i got B in genetics and A-/B/B in gen.bio 🙁 (nonmajor, prepharm prereqs)

Prepharm GPA: ~3.4-3.5
- A's in econ, stats, and publicspeaking bumped this up 🙂
- gpa is significantly higher than major gpa because i always got worse grades in the lowerdiv classes higher in series than required by pharm reqs (ie:math, physics)
- i still have to take physiology/anatomy, microbio + lab, mammphys + lab

Is the prepharm GPA the one that Pharmacy schools look at the most or do they view all GPAs with equal weight?

PCAT: haven't taken yet
- I haven't taken the PCATs but I am planning to this coming school year.
What is considered a "good enough" of a score to get into some of the popular (but maybe not elite of the elite) out of state schools?

Pharmacy Experience: none
- I am looking to volunteer at a hospital pharmacy
- I am also hoping to find work as a pharm tech after taking the PTCE
Given that I actually manage this, I would only have about 6 months of experience prior to applying since I'll be applying next summer... would this be enough? (of course i would continue these throughout my senior year though)

Non/pharmacy experiences/extracurrics:
- Part-time Lab Assistant in Organic R&D at a biotech company for 6 months
- Hoping to get involved in some clubs this year (hope its not too late)

What are some out of state schools that I should be looking into based on my stats and assuming that they will improve the way I hope?
What can I do, and what scores should I try to obtain (gpa, pcat, experience) in order to become more competitive. I know I am low on time as I have had no experience and seem to be trying to cram evrything in this coming year before applying next summer. Will having less than a year (less than 2 years before graduating) of experience before applying be enough?
Thanks!

Here is my predicament: I'm going into second year of university and I'm really anxious to apply to the University of Waterloo. Problem is, I will be missing two of the pre requisites by the end of this school year, but they can be finished in time for the Jan. 2011 entrance date. I don't know if it's worth applying this year, or if I should just wait until next year and apply to UToronto and Wayne State along with Waterloo! What do you guys think? Do I have any chances of getting into any of these schools with my stats(obviously, I'll have to write the PCAT for Toronto and Wayne State, but based on the rest of the stuff?

a.) School you are applying to: University of Waterloo

b. Overall GPA: 3.80.

c. Math/Science GPA: 3.80

d. GPA in last one or two school years: 3.86.

f. Pharmacy experience obtained: Volunteered at the a pharmacy for the past 8 months .

g. Date of application submission (PharmCAS/primary and secondary): not yet! 🙂

h. Number of LORs and source of LORs: I will ask for 3 letters of rec--1 pharmacist from where I volunteered, 1 manager, and 1 professor whose lab I worked in.

i. Non-pharmacy work and/or volunteer experience:
*will start working in a lab at my school
*volunteering with a national organization dedicated to international development with an executive position
*volunteering as a team leader with the first year orientation team at my school

j. Self-perception of interview skills: I'm incredibly nervous, so I'll need to do alot of practising if I get to that point in the application process.

k. Overall impression of personal statement quality: Haven't written it yet!

Eh what the hell, I'll give her a shot

a. Schools you are applying to - 6 schools

Hello,

I just graduated from college and I am seriously considering in going to pharmacy school in 2011. I do not have much of experience but I'm currently working on that. I wanted to ask you all what are my chances of getting into one given my current situation. I finished about 90% of all prereq. Can someone please help me? Is it worth the shot? Can you give me some advice on what I can do to improve my chances? THANK YOU!!!

Hi, I just recently started posting here and would like to know what you all think.

a. Schools you are applying to: UCSF, Univ of Washington, Univ. of Minnesota, University of Pittsburgh, Albany School of Pharmacy-VT campus, University of Illinois at Chicago, and University of Michigan. I'm living in Oregon right now, so they are all out of state, except for UCSF because they allow graduates from California high schools to get in-state tuition. Interviews might be pricey, but its probably best to hedge my bets.

b. Overall GPA: 3.50.

c. Math/Science GPA: 3.35

d. GPA in last one or two school years--3.6

e. Complete PCAT scores (or just composite)--

f. Pharmacy experience obtained: I have been volunteering at a local hospital pharmacy for the past 3 months

g. Date of application submission (PharmCAS/primary and secondary): Everything is ready except my statement of purpose which will be ready in a few days. I've set a deadline to be done by mid-october.

h. Number of LORs and source of LORs: 3 letters of rec--1 science professor, 1 supervisor from when I was a nursing assistant, and 1 academic advisor.

i. Non-pharmacy work and/or volunteer experience:
Half a year working as a nursing assistant, not much aside from that.

j. Self-perception of interview skills: Interviews are touch and go for me. I have had a few that were pretty epic fails. I plan on taking advantage of mock interview sessions at my adviser's office.

k. Overall impression of personal statement quality: Air tight in my opinion, I've poured over it for months, had friends with English degrees edit, etc.

I am currently taking microeconomics and O-chem. My school offers the lab as a separate course that can be taken out of sequence. I took the labs over the summer (which is ill-advised) and managed to eek out A's both terms.

IMO, you have a good chance at UMN and UIC, given that your interviews go well. Because your extra-curriculars don't look expansive, be sure to elaborate on any leadership roles in your interviews. Good luck!

k. Overall impression of personal statement quality
I haven't started writing it yet, but I am a strong essay writer and am not worried by it.

I wasn't planning on applying during this cycle, but after I got a super strong PCAT score, I thought I'd at least try. I'm planning on retaking my intro level bio classes to bring up my science GPA to at least a 3.0, but I needed to finish out my degree this semester, so my cumulative GPA will rise to 3.1 while my science GPA will remain the same unless I take a wintermester course somewhere. Any advice/thoughts would be appreciated.

Hey all,

I would really appreciate it if I could get some feedback on my situation.

I started out as a GPPA student at UIC, meaning that I had guaranteed acceptance into the UIC Pharmacy School as long as I kept my GPA at a 3.5. Unfortunately, that did not happen for me, due to familial circumstances my Freshman and Sophomore year.

After being dropped from the program, I pursued a Biological Sciences major, but was not performing well in the classes that I decided to switch to a Sociology major instead.

My Math & Science GPA is extremely, extremely low, a 1.96 to be exact because I failed Gen Chem II, Orgo I, and Orgo II. I retook these classes already, but I was only able to obtain a C. I re-calculated my Math & Science GPA if I was to retake these classes and receive an A in them, but it still comes out to a low 2.51.

I'm graduating this fall with my B.A. in Sociology, but I am considering just starting fresh at a junior college with my Pre-pharm pre-reqs, and only submitting those grades when I apply to pharmacy school. Would that be considered academic dishonesty?

Also, I have been a pharm tech for Walgreens for the past 5 years, I work a computer lab job, I currently volunteer at a hospital pharmacy, I have done research in 2 studies, I have been a laboratory aide, I have served leadership positions in two organizations on campus, and I have received two student service leadership awards from UIC's Chancellor.

I took my PCAT in the spring (but did not study for it =/), and I received a composite of a 49. I am retaking the PCAT in January, and I'm hoping to obtain a score of 85+.

So, would it better for me to start fresh in my Pre-pharm pre-reqs? I am just afraid that it would be considered academic dishonesty if I did not submit my previous grades & degree from another institution when applying to pharmacy school. If i were to start fresh, I'm planning to start in the spring, and take full-time semesters until spring 2011 and apply for admission into a pharmacy program for fall 2011.

Thanks in advance =]

You must submit ALL your grades when you apply for pharmacy school.

a. Schools you are applying to
All California Schools

c. Math/Science GPA

d. GPA in last one or two school years

e. Complete PCAT scores (or just composite)
Applying to California Schools only

f. Pharmacy experience obtained

g. Date of application submission (PharmCAS/primary and secondary)
(Is it too late for this year?)
Additionally, the following will help us gauge your chances but are more optional:

h. Number of LORs and source of LORs
I can get as many LOR as I need from the hospital I work at, because I have been here for several years and I maintain a good reputation there as Registered Nurse. I can get a few good LOR from school, because I have 2 years of research, and I have a good relationship with a few professors.

i. Non-pharmacy work and/or volunteer experience
I tought community CPR and trained Lifeguards, and CPR Pro for a number of years. I coached Special Olympics for a bit also, in swimming and powerlifting. I put in over 300+ hours teaching people how to swim. I used to be assistant Aquatics Director at a local YMCA. I'm currently a Registered Nurse, with 5 years of experience. I've trained staff in various competencies, including PICC line removal, and medical-surgical orientations. On occasion I work as charge nurse, also.

j. Self-perception of interview skills
I am confident during an interview. I have no problems, here.

k. Overall impression of personal statement quality
I am a good writer who can convey my thoughts well on paper. I've been told I am a "gifted writer."

Hi everyone,
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I know I can get my GPA up to 3.0. Nursing school left me with a string of C's, and now I'm doing my best at (some very challenging) upper division courses. With over 180 units in my academic history, gpa is very tough to move up. My biggest concern is my GPA. How bad is it to have a 2.95? I think I can boost it up to 3.0. I'll graduate May 2010 with a Bachelors in Biology, and a minor in Chem.

Thank you in advance,
Mick

Hi. I just recently found out about these forums from my counselor and would definitely like some honest feedback on the best path I should take. I have little other source of help/advice and would appreciate any assistance.

A little about myself: I'm currently attending a northern California state school and will be graduating Spring 2010 with my BA in Chemistry. I have worked at 2 different pharmacies for 4 years now. For extracurricular, I have a music background and have tried to use my talents to help boost my application and have joined a few academic clubs on campus. I recently completed my PharmCAS application. PharmCAS calculated my Science GPA to be 2.76, Math 2.86, Non-science 3.64, and my overall GPA 3.02. As for my pcats, I had a composite score of 67% (43 verbal, 75 biology, 26 reading comp, 91 quantitative ability, 77 chemistry, and 3s on both my writing). I recently applied for Northstate College of Pharmacy for early admission, but things don't look favorable (a few people I know have already received their supplementals and interviews and applied for normal admission and they have much better backgrounds than I do).

Now, I have tried my best to learn about the process but I am not sure what I am doing or the best path to take. Clearly, looking at my stats, I am no better than an average student and far from competitive. I would like to know if there is hope and if my stats are viable enough to get into any of the PharmD programs. I aspire to become a pharmacist more than any other profession, but I would also like to know the harsh reality of whether I should pursue a different career option or continue to follow my goal.

Although i'll value all the guidance from anyone here, I would definitely appreciate the opinion from those with past experience. I looked at the school list and was completely overwhelmed. I managed to knock out a few schools that were far out of my reach but the list still goes on and on. Assuming I get declined from Northstate, I would like to know a few prospect schools that would be best suited for someone in my situation; places that would be within my caliber. At this point, location isn't a problem. I am willing to travel anywhere, pay whatever it costs, and do whatever it takes to get my foot in the door. I would like to know if anyone has been in this kind of circumstance and if you guys would recommend some programs I can check out.

All comments are welcome.
Sorry for the ignorance.
Thank you all for your time.

-Jay

Critically, I'm wondering WAMC because I am applying from out of state for these two schools (UNC only allows 18% of their seats to go to out-of-staters), and because I'm fuzzy on their non-science prerequisites. For example, UNC asks for 9 hours foreign language, and I'm debating whether to kick my own butt trying to pack these in or not in my last semester.

a. I'm really just curious about UNC (North Carolina) and UCSF (San Francisco).
