I would like to know...How long after will you get the financial aid packet after you sent in the enrollment form and deposit? I sent mine in last week (March 25) and haven't gotten a confirmation yet. Anybody??

I got mine a week after I got the acceptance e-mail. However one of my friends applied there and got a financial aid packet without even receiving an interview invite or anything.

lol, are your taxes really that complicated? I had a W-2, a few 1099-INT's, 1098-T, and a bunch of random stuff and it took me 30 mins online.

I guess for next year save him the trouble, I'll walk you through it...it's pretty easy.

Haha thanks. =] I seriously need to learn how to do it on my own.

Just don't work. No taxes to file. 👍
lol.

Use FAFSA Code 013549 and I think you have to file it before 6/30. But fill it out ASAP because some of the grants/scholarships & such are due earlier than that. Plus, you have to send in a signed copy of your 1040 form to the school too, I believe.
Eek. thanks! I should really get a move on it.. I feel so delinquent =P

I sent it out on 3/24 and I just got my confirmation today, so it should come in very soon for you. I still haven't gotten the FA packet, but I used BannerWeb to complete whatever is left after I filed my FAFSA. So I'm 1 requirement away from completing it. I wanted to complete it quickly so that they can award me quickly. If you have any question, the FA Office is very good replying to email.

👍 It'll be interesting to have a delinquent classmate.

For out of state students, how did you or how will you move your stuff to Philadelphia?
I'm from Texas, so it's a long way from there. Should I ship my stuff or U-Haul them?

What stuff are you bringing?

I'm moving from southern California and I'm thinking I'm just going to pack up my clothes and personal items and shove them into two suitcases (hopefully).

I am from NY, so I rented an enterprise van. I am not sure if that would be easier, however, since you are coming from far away, hopefully confettiflyer can help you out!

This is a great idea if you are going to be living in the dorms, but the apts don't come with any furniture, so you would need to bring some! Unless you were planning to buy everything once you are here.

😀Violetkyak: I think I know you! We both went to UTA, did you have Dr. Rogers for chemistry? Or Strom? I think you were in my class... but im not 100% sure lol

About moving, Im moving way down from Texas also, I was thinking about just packing clothes and personal items like someone else said from above and then going to IKEA in Philly and getting a few things for my apt! Probably going with this plan in early August since I think orientation is in the middle of August? Does anyone know when the orientation for Pharmacy students will be? It didnt say exactly on the little calender they sent in the mail...

Im actually looking forward to the fall semester this year! Does that make me weird? lol 😀

Hold your horses :]. Last year I was excited and was really looking forward to school. But in retrospective, enjoy the time you have off now with no worries, no major exams. Because once you start, the semester will fly by so fast!!!😍

I was thinking of renting an Enterprise van too because them U-Hauls are expensive! I'll just have to get some friends to come with me and make it a roadtrip.

You're right, I believe we have met before. I had bother Rogers and Strom! Yay, at least I'll know another Texan 😀 I think I'll need to go to IKEA to buy a new bed! I love that IKEA is so close in Philly. And you're not the only one looking forward to the fall semester!

I moved here (from CA) with two large pieces of luggage with all my personal stuff (clothes, etc... ) and took a trip to Target for the other essentials. I went back in November for Thanksgiving and December for winter break and used my luggage allowance to ferry everything else back.

This is my plan too.. I think either my mom or my sister are coming to Philly with me early August to buy and set up furniture from IKEA. 🙂

Also I think I saw on the Jefferson site that orientation for pharmacy is August 13. Which is more than two weeks before the start of the semester!

so i've heard good things about TJU here on the forums...

i really love early american history, which of course philly was central to. i'm also a huuuuuge geek and am slightly obsessed with thomas jefferson. the tuition seems pretty decent as well... i really want to go there lol

what's the neighborhood like? i go to Ohio State and immediately outside of campus (in student housing areas), bums and criminals are in abundance. this will be a major factor in my application process... can anyone give me the d/l on the neighborhoods around tju?

Immediately around Jeff is nice...specifically south of Locust St. and east of 10th. There is a stretch of ghetto ass businesses (bootleg watch sellers, discount clothing stores, etc..) along chestnut to the west. If you head north, Market East is just really bad....lot of weird folk, pretty ghetto. Still north is Chinatown, which is about what you'd expect for a Chinatown (small in comparison to SF, NYC).

Avoid North Philly (ie Temple) at all costs....your life depends on it.

If you head south of campus toward South street... a lot of cool places to eat/live. I have tons of friends living down there.

Even further west of campus is Rittenhouse Sq, which is booo-jay, pretty expensive digs. That's about a 15min walk from campus. So as long as you stay close to Jefferson, you're safe. I've wandered around late at night (use the buddy system) and it's fine. Center City is kind of a bubble. Comparatively speaking, it's a lot cleaner/safe than the rest of the city.

I come from suburban CA so even center city is pretty damn filthy in comparison. I've since adjusted.

I think I posted this before, but my general "safe & convenient" borders are N/S boundary is Market St. to South St, E/W boundary is 6th street to 18th street. There are safer areas outside of this, but this will put you within 5-20 minutes walking distance to campus.

2 Questions:

1. What's the weather like in Philly? I'm from CA, so I'm used to the warm weather. Does it get realllly cold in the winter? How often does it snow? How are the summers? Breezy, warm, hot, humid, dry, etc.?

2. I heard there's a dress code. I read on the other thread about the dress code in pharmacy schools. However, I would like to know specifically for TJU. Any inputs and opinions from current students? Slacks, dress shirts or sweaters, and closed shoes everyday??? No jeans?? All I have are jeans!

Weather in Philly ATM is crappy! its been rainy... had a random day of hail! But that was really random. Winter is chilly, we have many californians that have adjusted... just dress properly, buy winter coats =p but wait til you're out here to buy them... or just go shopping here! we don't have tax on clothes =) In the past few years the winters haven't been that bad... I would say it snowed here ~ 5-6x? Its actually nice when it snows bc its a little warmer... its the frigid cold that sucks... but again, you'll adapt (I used to live in CA so I know). Summers are hot... esp in the city it gets pretty humid... some rainy days too but yeah prepare for humidity!

Theres only a dress code on lab days which is once per week... and thats only for lab, which is 1hr long. I live on campus so sometimes I would go to class normally, go home change into business casual attire and head to lab. During the rest of the week, dress however you like. I've seen my classmates going to class in sweats esp during test day since we have exams at 8am... those are the ones pulling all niters. Def invest in buying some professional attire since you don't want to show up wearing the same thing every week =p Oh I forgot to mention for your IPPEs you also have to dress up. and that is also once a week... so for 2x/week you would dress up.

Guys: slacks, shoes, shirt, sometimes tie.
Girls: slacks, closed toe shoes, shirt or sweater.

What's wrong with wearing the same thing every day? haha...i do it, i mean i'm wearing a lab coat over it...i just make sure it smells decent.

and weather will suck, you will complain with the rest of the californians in your class about how much better it is back home. you'll get used to the cold after a few months (50 degrees is warm to me now whereas that would be the absolute coldest LA would get in the dead of "winter.")

invest in some north face gear, or some other high end warm clothing...you DO NOT want to skimp on this, especially being from CA. there's a bus from center city to King of Prussia mall that's easy to take... jackets are maybe $250-$400 depending how nice you want it.

LOL @ confetti.
I guess bc i'm a girl.. i don't like wearing the same professional outfit every week for 14weeks... =p

But yeah... I don't agree with the north face gear... way too pricey. A nice wool coat ~100-200$ will work just fine... just layer up with hats, scarfs, gloves then you're set. I never knew north face was sooo expensive until I went into the store in SF... I don't get why people pay so much money such unattractive jackets =p (but thats IMO.. again, i'm a girl so i'm more of fashion over function lol)

I've noticed said Fashion over function.... useless belts you ladies put over your tops...

Thanks everybody for the great info! Gotta love SDN! 😀

Whatever, I want to be able to be able to go hike up a mountain at a moment's notice...none of this froo froo pea coat stuff, it's useless when it rains/snows! When the wind is howling and it's coming down in torrents, you'll be glad you spent the $300 for a well built jacket. There's a reason why they wear North Face up on Mt. Everest!

Does it get THAT cold in Philly? I'm kind of scared now ...

just to let everyone know, I've lived in philly my whole life.
I've seen many winters, and have braved the cold year after year.

In my closet, I have:
3 or 4 hoodies (~$20 each)
1 zip up sweat shirt ($10)
1 parka (reserved for the coldest of days. ~$70)
1 pea-coat (clearance rack - $35)
1 light jacket ($40)

In my opinion, North face is way overpriced. Sure they look kinda nice, and they're warm...but NOT a neccessity.

learn to layer and you'll be fine.

We're coming from California, we need the best we can get! I picked north face as a brand because....when I was walking around the city in my less than adequate CA winter gear (jeans, hoodie), everyone seemed to be wearing North Face. Maybe it's cuz the brand name is more obvious than others.

Cheap thermals are also a good bet...I usually go cheap on the layering clothes (thermal sweaters, etc...) but put my $$ in my outerwear.

North face is trendy. That's why everyone wears it.
There's better gear for WAYYYYY cheaper.

and once you get used to it, philly winters aren't that bad.

Haha no, I don't plan on climbing Mt. Everest so I guess I really DON'T need a North Face jacket... but really, I guess its fine for you guys... but for girls? totally NOT cute. I prefer my down jackets or wool.

And YES! someone agrees with me! Those belts are cute and DO accentuate the waist line... take that ghetto boy =D

i finally get an interview invite from TJU!!! I am completely broke 😳 and ask if any current student can let me stay with them for free or affordable price. i am female, from southern ca, and i am not a psychotic or dangerous person! please let me know if you are willing to help. thanks a bunch.

Congrats on your interview. You should check with Alexander Inn. It is close to campus and the rates are fairly affordable.

I can't really hook you up with a place, but philly public transportation is pretty good. You could stay almost anywhere in the city and get to Jefferson by bus/train in roughly an hour or less.

If you find a cheap hotel anywhere, i could try and figure out a bus route for you...

Ah I hate pre-reqs. 12 units of physiology/anatomy by August is borderline impossible. Looks like a slot will be opening up for one of you guys. ;P

Which class are you missing? I've known people who took 3 classes (A&P 2, and Microbiology) the summer prior to starting in the fall.

Those 3 classes actually. After I visited TJU and SJFC, I had the two schools essentially the same. I wasn't too thrilled about downtown life of philly and the amt of snow in Rochester (esp coming from san jose, CA), but I knew I would be comfortable and happy with both. SJFU I dont have any pre-reqs to take while TJU requires 2-3 courses of A&P and one micro class because TJU won't accept two of my bioengineering physiology courses at UCSD even though UCSD reconizes the course as the same with the course in the bio dept. I guess I didn't really want my decision to be based on Pre-Reqs but it looks like thats going to be how it is.

Nothing wrong with that...I'd have probably made the same choice. There's security in knowing that you're all set to go for the fall vs. you MUST pass 3 tough classes with a C for your latter choice, or you're not going anywhere.

One of the reasons why I picked TJU was they were a lot more kind to my prerequisites due to some sort of mathematical "fluke." For some reason, between the UC system, quarter units, and the unit requirement at TJU...12 qtr units of, say, ochem + lab amounted to only 2/3 of the year's worth of ochem on the quarter unit side. I even verified this with admissions in writing.

If you still want to go to TJU, see if you can get an exception for microbiology. It sounds like microbio was cross-listed from bio to engineering and the "engineering" prefix shows up on your transcript. Other than that, goodluck! Enjoy the summer.

Thanks! I had a great time in philly and the opportunity to ask Oaktownboy questions about why TJU. ;P Definately enjoyed Pats Cheesesteak over Genos. 👍 I went there during NCAA tourney...jesus the lines were ridiculous..are they always like that?

I gave up my seat. I liked the place a lot, but I got into my number 1 choice, so I let them know I'm out. Hopefully one of you guys benefits from it.

Both pat's and geno's suck. and don't even get me started on jim's.

North face is too pricey? If you're a girl and prefer fashion to function like my wife does, then you have no problem dropping 2-300 on a tiny hand bag that you can't fit anything in.

Haha sounds like your wife and I will get along =) Idk... I'm addicted to handbags and they feel timeless to me... so I have no problem dropping a few hundred on one if I know i'll use it for 5+ years. Clothes however... style changes yearly... and my taste changes too so I feel like I can't pay 300-400$ unless I know i'll wear it for more than 3yrs. Otherwise, not worth it 😀

Same here, I had the same shell for 10 years before giving to my cousin. That ish will last forever, I'll be wearing these jackets for at least another 3 while I'm here and maybe when I visit someplace outside of the sunbelt.

and Pat's/Geno's = tourist destinations, kind of like Pier 39 in San Francisco...the locals like to segregate the tourists in those locations.

I don't get this...I mean if it's green and blue in 2007, it's gonna look the same in 2008. It's all in your head! It's not like we went from tie dye shirts to leg warmers in 12 months time.

You girls and your "style"....only other chicks and gay men notice. :meanie:

same jacket for 10yrs?! I'd like to think you grew somewhat since 10yrs ago =p

And we did go from bell bottoms to skinny jeans in one year! You just don't notice these things but I know other heterosexual guys do... theres a reason why most guys don't go for girls that can't dress!

P.S. Stop responding to my posts! you're distracting me from med chem =p

One must also realize that the Metrosexual Man can also tell you whether or not his jacket is from BR's Fall 2007 line vs their Fall 2009 collection.

Even guys stay up to date with what they put on. It might not be as obvious as trends in Woman's Fashion... but there is always a change. 🙂
