in the process of applying... the idea to have the crna or anesthesiologist that i have shadowed write a letter for me sounds like a great idea, however i've only shadowed them twice, so the letter might be a little vague regarding my character and strengths due to the fact that they don't know either of those things very well. would it be a better idea to go with two of my employers at the lab that i work at now (i'm confident their letters will be positive) and A. the crna or md i've shadowed OR B. the president of the board of directors for which i am a member of (for a reproductive health clinic that i used to volunteer for). it's sort of a trade-off: do I go with the letter that I know will display my strengths that i have to offer the medical community? or the letter that comes from someone involved in anesthesiology, even if it is might not be a good representation of all that i have to offer?

also, for those of you that have already applied or are in the process of finishing up your application, did your references provide letters or did they fill out the provided evaluation forms?

Hey guys,

Formal letters never hurt. Sometimes a form just doesn't tell a good overall picture. For those of you dealing with AA's and anesthesiologists that have ties/knowledge of/contacts with people in the five programs, don't be too shy about asking for help, suggestions, letters, etc.

I think that it really looks good if they write a full letter as well... shows that they really think that you are a good canidate for the position. I am planning on asking my references "If you really think that I would make a good fit for this program, would you mind writing me a letter in addition to the form?"

First I want to say...

...Congratulations to those who have interviews!!


I also have a question. Do any of you all know if the adcoms are bent on whether or not applicants have some courses from community college? I have none from community college but I will be applying to AA school next year and I am thinking of finishing up some of the Pre-Reqs at Community College. Do AA adcoms prefer University courses over CC courses? Or do they not care? I will have a bachelor's degree when I apply but I will need to take a few more courses as a non-degree student.

Personally, I would rather go to the CC because it will have smaller classes. I could go to a university in my area but I don't like feeling like a number instead of a student. But if it is in my best interest to finish Pre-Reqs at a University instead of CC, I will go to a University.

These links are to the 5 schools. There is no mention one way or another about community college work so I would recommend contacting the individual schools for their input. At least you only have 5, for PAs we have 14😀.

Out of curiosity, why is everyone so leery about community colleges?

At least around here... the professors at OSU also teach at the local community college. The textbooks and courses are identical... the only real difference is WAY cheaper tuition!

If you are staying down around UMKC, you won't be too far from the Sprint center and the Power and Light District. The PLD has great food and places to unwind. I highly recommend the Angel Rock Bar, which has sort of chic white trash motif.

Unfortunately, I work 10 hours shifts on Thursday and Friday.

As for your interview being a week after mine...I hope they don't make me wait until October to hear the final word.

I hope it works out. From what I was told, there are about 50 applicants for 5-8 slots, although my information might be a little dated.

I was enrolled in a FNP program when I submitted my application and it is not supposed to negatively affect my application.

I didn't complete my application until late July. Josh, I know that you will do fine with UMKC, you have great stats plus health care work experience. I do hope though that they don't make final decisions until after everyone has interviewed, makes it fair. I looked up the PLD by the way and it looks cool...I cant wait to visit KC.

From what I've heard, Emory and South have about 200-300 applicants. Emory probably has a higher number of applicants than South. Emory accepts about 40-50 and south accepts about 20-25. UMKC had about 50 apply this year and they will be accepting 5-8 people. I don't know about the others. (so, 10-20%). This is what I've heard from friends in the program right now.

Of course. You are correct and I completely agree. But, I am just wondering if the person who applies early has a better shot at getting an interview then someone who applies closer to the deadline. Does it really matter when you apply? Does everyone get equal/fair consideration.

I ask because I am not sure if I will have the means (money) to apply earlier and may hold off applying until the middle or end of application registration. Applying to graduate school is very expensive. And, I will also need to take a few more pre-req courses I have not finished so that will add up to be costly as well. So, I may need some time to work extra and make some extra cash for the application process (mcat, sending scores, application fee, travel expenses for interviews etc). I do not want to have a limited risky chance of applying later in application cycle so I need to plan now what I have to do. (I am applying next application cycle, not the current one).

If the program practices rolling admissions, applying early will get you the most looks. Example: You apply in August, but don't get selected. Your file is looked at again on the next review. If you meet criteria, you are then selected for an interview.

Focus on school work, and the quality of your application and everything will work out. I know South and Emory interview only in Jan. and Feb. with only a couple of interview dates. These programs are only interviewing a max of 100 people so it's not like med school. As long as you get your stuff in before the deadline they will see you as responsible, they are looking at the best applicants, not those who applied 2 months earlier. The reason it is a must to apply early to med school is because the amount of qualified applicants is through the roof, and they can afford to take the chance that they may miss out on some stellar applicants because the class is already full. AA schools don't have that luxury...good luck to ya.

I'm still trying to figure out which route I want to take. Just got my MCAT results back yesterday - got a 30.

However, I've received an interview invite from an MD school... should I schedule the interview and then cancel if I get accepted into AA?

I'd definitely do the MD school interview.....You can weigh your options on which one you want to attend later...especially if you get accepted to both....About Case, I think their application deadline is Oct. 1st. If they plan on interviewing you, you will probably hear back from them after that date. I believe all the AA schools require a formal interview.
