Those Applying to AA School....

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
in the process of applying... the idea to have the crna or anesthesiologist that i have shadowed write a letter for me sounds like a great idea, however i've only shadowed them twice, so the letter might be a little vague regarding my character and strengths due to the fact that they don't know either of those things very well. would it be a better idea to go with two of my employers at the lab that i work at now (i'm confident their letters will be positive) and A. the crna or md i've shadowed OR B. the president of the board of directors for which i am a member of (for a reproductive health clinic that i used to volunteer for). it's sort of a trade-off: do I go with the letter that I know will display my strengths that i have to offer the medical community? or the letter that comes from someone involved in anesthesiology, even if it is might not be a good representation of all that i have to offer?

also, for those of you that have already applied or are in the process of finishing up your application, did your references provide letters or did they fill out the provided evaluation forms?

....... emory application still m.i.a??

Hey guys,

Formal letters never hurt. Sometimes a form just doesn't tell a good overall picture. For those of you dealing with AA's and anesthesiologists that have ties/knowledge of/contacts with people in the five programs, don't be too shy about asking for help, suggestions, letters, etc.

I think that it really looks good if they write a full letter as well... shows that they really think that you are a good canidate for the position. I am planning on asking my references "If you really think that I would make a good fit for this program, would you mind writing me a letter in addition to the form?"

Just my 2 cents.

Josh,

Have you heard anything from UMKC yet?........

Nope. Got an email reply at the beginning of the month that told me to sit tight until early September when they will start scheduling interviews.

Sigh.

Don't you hate the waiting? Well I am sure that you will get an interview....I am looking forward to hearing that you have gotten in. Keep me posted!!!

Sigh.

Kind of like that month that you spend sitting and waiting for your MCAT scores.

Middle of September can't get here quick enough.

Double Sigh.

:boom:

So I have an interview on September 18th. Anyone else?

I'll be in Kansas City for an interview sept. 25th...never been before so it should be fun. Good luck with your interview!

Hello,

First I want to say...

...Congratulations to those who have interviews!!

I also have a question. Do any of you all know if the adcoms are bent on whether or not applicants have some courses from community college? I have none from community college but I will be applying to AA school next year and I am thinking of finishing up some of the Pre-Reqs at Community College. Do AA adcoms prefer University courses over CC courses? Or do they not care? I will have a bachelor's degree when I apply but I will need to take a few more courses as a non-degree student.

Personally, I would rather go to the CC because it will have smaller classes. I could go to a university in my area but I don't like feeling like a number instead of a student. But if it is in my best interest to finish Pre-Reqs at a University instead of CC, I will go to a University.

Thank You.

These links are to the 5 schools. There is no mention one way or another about community college work so I would recommend contacting the individual schools for their input. At least you only have 5, for PAs we have 14😀.

Depending on the amount of time you have and your food preferences, I think some of us could give you some dining suggestions.

I'll be there Thursday night after my interview, and my flight back is not until Friday night. Although my money is limited, and it's just going to be me there, but any input would be nice.

Haha. You're right, luckily its only five school so I can email them an ask. Thanks.

Another question, for those of you who have recieved interview invite, when did you all apply? Thanks.

Thats great Josh and golf.......Hope everything goes well for you on your interviews....How many are applyiing this year at UMKC?

What's the average turnaround time from having a complete application and getting an interview date?

Also, if there is a good reason, will programs admit me if it meant me not completing the current graduate (M.S.) program that I'm in now? Is it as strict as many medical schools where they require that you finish?

Out of curiosity, why is everyone so leery about community colleges?

At least around here... the professors at OSU also teach at the local community college. The textbooks and courses are identical... the only real difference is WAY cheaper tuition!

If you are staying down around UMKC, you won't be too far from the Sprint center and the Power and Light District. The PLD has great food and places to unwind. I highly recommend the Angel Rock Bar, which has sort of chic white trash motif.

Unfortunately, I work 10 hours shifts on Thursday and Friday.

As for your interview being a week after mine...I hope they don't make me wait until October to hear the final word.

SRSLY.

I hope it works out. From what I was told, there are about 50 applicants for 5-8 slots, although my information might be a little dated.

I was enrolled in a FNP program when I submitted my application and it is not supposed to negatively affect my application.

Another question, for those of you who have recieved interview invite, when did you all apply? Thanks.

Those that have interviews now...what month of this year did you all apply in?

I didn't complete my application until late July. Josh, I know that you will do fine with UMKC, you have great stats plus health care work experience. I do hope though that they don't make final decisions until after everyone has interviewed, makes it fair. I looked up the PLD by the way and it looks cool...I cant wait to visit KC.

Does anyone know what the acceptance rate is percentage wise? And also, roughly how many people apply to AA programs?

Are there any statistics out there besides grade point averages and ug majors of applicants? I am more curious about the acceptance rate and number of applicants to this program.

Thanks.

From what I've heard, Emory and South have about 200-300 applicants. Emory probably has a higher number of applicants than South. Emory accepts about 40-50 and south accepts about 20-25. UMKC had about 50 apply this year and they will be accepting 5-8 people. I don't know about the others. (so, 10-20%). This is what I've heard from friends in the program right now.

Thanks golf14. One more question, if I may, do you know if there is a preference in applying early or if it doesn't matter in the long run whether you apply early or closer to deadline? I noticed that some of the schools do interviews all at once in the spring beggining January/February to March. Thanks. (Apologies for all the questions. I have been trying to research them and have not succeeded.)

Applying early definitely won't hurt you. If you have all of your stuff together, why wait?

Applying early definitely won't hurt you. If you have all of your stuff together, why wait?

Of course. You are correct and I completely agree. But, I am just wondering if the person who applies early has a better shot at getting an interview then someone who applies closer to the deadline. Does it really matter when you apply? Does everyone get equal/fair consideration.

I ask because I am not sure if I will have the means (money) to apply earlier and may hold off applying until the middle or end of application registration. Applying to graduate school is very expensive. And, I will also need to take a few more pre-req courses I have not finished so that will add up to be costly as well. So, I may need some time to work extra and make some extra cash for the application process (mcat, sending scores, application fee, travel expenses for interviews etc). I do not want to have a limited risky chance of applying later in application cycle so I need to plan now what I have to do. (I am applying next application cycle, not the current one).

If the program practices rolling admissions, applying early will get you the most looks. Example: You apply in August, but don't get selected. Your file is looked at again on the next review. If you meet criteria, you are then selected for an interview.

Focus on school work, and the quality of your application and everything will work out. I know South and Emory interview only in Jan. and Feb. with only a couple of interview dates. These programs are only interviewing a max of 100 people so it's not like med school. As long as you get your stuff in before the deadline they will see you as responsible, they are looking at the best applicants, not those who applied 2 months earlier. The reason it is a must to apply early to med school is because the amount of qualified applicants is through the roof, and they can afford to take the chance that they may miss out on some stellar applicants because the class is already full. AA schools don't have that luxury...good luck to ya.

Josh, good luck tomorrow with your interview......Are you confident?:luck:

I think I have a solid application but you never can tell. I would be curious to know what interview questions they ask though...

Good luck tomorrow, Josh. Be sure to let us know how it goes. I've been talking quite a bit to a UMKC student that is rotating through our hospital. Only had good things to say (You've met him, I guess).

I'm still trying to figure out which route I want to take. Just got my MCAT results back yesterday - got a 30.

:luck:Best of luck:luck:

A 30 is great for the UMKC program...and I think the average score for KU Med is a 28.

Decisions...

Yeah... not easy decisions, either... although, I have to say that this is winning out:

And I'm not talking about the Chiefs! :meanie: Stupid football team.

Well, the interview was relaxed but I didn't deliver as well as I would have liked. I think the late afternoon interview time might of been to my detriment, but I'll find out in three weeks after the rest of you yahoos interview.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I'm sure that you were fine, it seems like you have a very strong application from what I have been able to piece together. I think that they would also like to have an RN AA-C... you might be able to help on the AA/CRNA front... possibly😀.

I'm glad that I'm not in the same interview class as you!

Be sure to keep us all posted.

Anybody else have an interview yet?

She's cute!!!! Yeah....they will always win out......I have one of my own that wins out also......

Josh and RT:

Keep us updated on your progress in the application cycle.

Good Luck

does anyone know about Case Western's post-application process? I couldn't find a whole lot on their website about what happens after your application is complete. Does anyone know when you hear from them? Do you interview?

Also, I think I'm in a similar situation as the poster with the adorable daughter. I get the impression he's torn between MD or AA? I too applied to both, but AA is winning out. However, I've received an interview invite from an MD school... should I schedule the interview and then cancel if I get accepted into AA?

I'd definitely do the MD school interview.....You can weigh your options on which one you want to attend later...especially if you get accepted to both....About Case, I think their application deadline is Oct. 1st. If they plan on interviewing you, you will probably hear back from them after that date. I believe all the AA schools require a formal interview.

You would kick yourself if you didn't get an interview for AA and turned down the chance for med school. Never burn a bridge, I say....

haha, you're entirely right. I don't know why I thought it'd benefit me to burn that bridge! My brain probably isn't functioning clearly when I'm on SDN late at night 🙂

UMKC is supposed to let us know on October 3rd.

Good Luck, Golf, tomorrow:luck:......Let us know how it went....Did Josh give you any pointers?

Actually I didn't want to say too much because I thought it might be distracting to Golf and the rest of the people that interviewed today and will next Thursday.

No need to create panic.

Thanks for the good Luck..i've got a flight that arrives in Kansas City at 9 am. It will be a long day for me...and as far as the interview goes, i've gotten some pointers from friends who have interviewed at Emory (an intense interview). My main goal is to be myself, and enjoy my time there as much as possible.

So golf, how did it go?
