Hi yall from Texas! Applying this coming cycle and was wondering if there was a way to come visit/shadow at the Texas schools for a day or something to see how the school is like/talk to D1s/talk to admissions? I remember someone on here posting that you could but cant remember where I saw that. Many thanks!

Yeah all of the schools have tours you should be able to find them on their website.

As far as talking to D1s I don't think that's an option but idk

We have an annual impressions day where Pre dents can get a tour of the school, get interview tips, talk to dental students, wax etc. I'm not sure what the date is exactly but it's usually in the spring around march/April.

UTHSCSA has an annual pre-dent day and a mock interview day which are separate, also in the spring.
The pre-dent day gives you the opportunity to learn about the program and then do some hand skills exercises in the simulation lab with hand pieces. You get a tour of the school and get to meet some of the students and faculty.

The mock interview day gives you a chance to practice interviewing with students at the school (many of which are student interviewers in the actual interviews). You also get a tour of the school and get the opportunity to ask any questions about the application process and get tips from current students.

I went to Impressions Day and loved it! Highly recommend. I also went to a Mock Interview Day at Houston and it kinda sucked. Didn't even get a tour and they spent half the time trying to sell us ASDA memberships (sorry Houston ppl but that's just my honest opinion)

I've never been to their mock interview day but their Pre-dental day is similar to A&Ms impressions day.

Ahh so are all of these days just one day where Pre-Dents come and see everything? There aren't any days that you can schedule based on your own schedule and come in alone? (I work as a consultant so dates are always tricky!)

It would be tough to come in to talk to D1s since we have class from 8-4 M-F. I'm not sure how A&M feels about Pre dents shadowing in the clinic, it might be a HIPPA issue. If you know a dental student personally you could probably get them to show you around the school on a weekend.

You could also try to contact each school's ASDA chapter. They each have Pre-Dent officers that organize these types of events. There were other pre-dent events last semester like a DAT Jeopardy night, etc.
UTHSCSA's Mock Interview is Feb 25th and Pre-Dent day is April 1st this year.

Did anyone that interviewed at UTHSCSA today get told when the next round is out?

Ahh I see that makes sense. Would it be possible to just come in and talk to admissions/see the facilities outside of those designated days or is that not a thing that usually happens?

Thanks for the information! By each school you mean each Dental school has Pre-Dent officers? Are these like students? Sorry for the million and one questions haha but would like to come out and see the schools if I can. Definitely think it will help me make a better decision at the end of the day.

I'm sure they wouldn't mind meeting with you. I would email the admissions office and ask. I'm not very sure about tours but you could ask about that too.

Each ASDA (American Student Dental Association) chapter at the TX schools has Pre-Dent officers. They are dental students. I don't know if they could accomodate a tour for one person but they could give you info on future events so that you can see the school and interact with some students/faculty.

Our ASDA has a Pre-Dent Chair and Pre-Dent Coordinator that organize all our Pre-Dent events.

Only 30 grand total (including books, fees, living expenses, etc.) according to the website.

It's a steal if you compare it to other post-bac programs (which don't offer guaranteed admission to one of the cheapest schools in the nation).

The only problem is getting in
Thats a pretty good deal, I spent close to that on a MS. I'm currently in a gap year that has been full of stress before I got my first acceptance (out of state school). great option if you can get in

The "if you get in" is the key. I noticed one of the requirements is to be from an underserved population or community. Basically removes me from the running by default. 🙁

There are lots of options out there, I did a non-thesis MS at TAMU in college station. It was a nice program that allowed me to take more upper level science classes and have time for more leadership and shadowing hours. This was my third time applying, first time getting interviews, and first acceptance. Also take a good look at your essays. Get help with them if you need to. Good luck to you

Yea you have to qualify for at LEAST four of the low income/underserved population requirements

I know a lot of people following D1 around for a day, just to get a gist of what we do in a day at UTSD. I don't know particularly who would you contact and ask for this. Let me summon @Typical Average Student for expert advice on this.

UTSD has a predental day, registration opens Jan. 26th at 9am. The link to register is here: http://houstonasda.com/predental-day/ I highly recommend it, I did it 2 years ago... 7 of the 34 people got into UTSD. You essentially have a mock interview with students as well as faculty members. You'll also get the chance to review your personal statement with some of the students and get tips from them.
In terms of shadowing, you would just e-mail Dr. Galindo or one of the admissions coordinators and request to shadow a student for a day. Certain days are better than others so just message me privately if you are interested in that.

Wow thats awesome! Should we then prep for this at all? I personally am studying for the DAT so have not even had a chance to look at personal statement stuff yet, but Im assuming I should before I attend this event?

Also-any ideas when Impressions Day for Texas A&M is? I cant seem to find it on the website anywhere....

You should definitely start drafting some sort of personal statement. Don't worry about your DAT... You should prep a little bit for the predental day if you plan on attending, maybe just the basic questions like "what are your strengths and weaknesses?" and "why do you want to be a dentist?"

Is there somewhere I have to register for these?

You do have to register but I don't remember where. If you call the dental deans office they should be able to give you that info. The deans office helps organize the pre-dental day.
I have a completely off topic question but does your program allow you to moonlight? Do you plan on moonlighting?

Does anyone know how TAMU feels about letters of intent? Curious since 2nd round acceptances should be here within the month.

Hey guys, for those interested in the Baylor post bacc, we have a groupme chat. DM me your number if u want to be added.

If you have any updates send them. Just make sure you have something to add to your already existing application and not just a hey I wanna go here. Words from a former Baylor adcom.

I just wanna say impressions day was great at A&M!
I went. Fell in love with the school. It was a good time to get a feel for the school and the atmosphere even though it was a Saturday. I even saw people from that day at interviews throughout TX.
If you can make it I recommend it highly.

It was in April. I would call on the 30th I guess because they all fill up super fast or did when I was trying to go lol

Does anyone know when UTHSCSA next round of acceptances is?

Does any one have news from UTSD Houston? I know last round of interviews took place last Tuesday so I'm assuming there will be some activity this week. Good luck to you all!

There is still one last round of interviews tomorrow
I remember during one of the presentations they send out interviews every 2 weeks after the second round of acceptances, which was in the beginning of January. Just trying to figure out which date they send acceptances on!

Also, any new acceptances from TAMU or UTSD?

I had predicted it was that day based on old trends (last Friday of January) and round 2 was January 5

There are a lot of other master programs that the dental schools are aware of! I am currently in the SMP Medical Sciences program at UNTHSC. Our curriculum is modeled after the first years curriculum at TCOM.
