I have a quick LoR question: can you send in your Letters of Rec b4 you send in the actual TMDSAS primary app? Like once I got my PIN I told my letter writers and they sent them in already while I'm still working on my PS. Is that alright?

The website requests that you not mail anything off until you're done with the TMDSAS app itself.

Shoot, that's bad. One of my profs already sent his in b/c he's leaving for the summer like next week (after final grades are due). Would he be able to give me his letter to send later? or can he upload it to Interfolio (w/ the TMDSAS sheet)? Shoot, what should I do?

|EDIT| Wait, the TMDSAS site says
Do NOT send any suppporting materials until after you have requested your TMDSAS PIN
. I'm in the clear then right?

Hey TMDSAS folks, I am not sure whether to apply to Texas schools through this system or not. I like Texas and I have a lot of family down there, but I am a Washington state resident. How bad does that hurt my chances at Texas schools? I really like the programs at some of the schools down there but I don't want to go through the entire TMDSAS process just to be glanced over because I am out of state. Any suggestions?

It hurts quite a bit from my understanding. Texas schools are required to have at least 90% of their classes be made up of Texas residents. Therefore, out-of-state residents would have to be above and beyond the norm to get accepted. It all depends on how strong a candidate you are I guess.

$80 to apply to 4 UT schools which would cost you $150 via AMCAS PLUS the chance at cheaper tuition. If you're a 3.5/26 candidate, perhaps look elsewhere but I wouldn't outright eliminate Texas schools because of the 90% rule. You never know what this process will give you.

Ahh, my mistake, I think you're right. I'm not sure where I started thinking that you had to submit the TMDSAS in its entirety.

Sorry about that.

That's alright, I should've double checked w/ the website first before asking. It was just that when I told one of my friends just then, he said the same thing you did at first and I just went into panic mode right away. Like I mentioned before, one of my writers is going away for the summer so I'd have a really hard time trying to get a hold of him later on (and that's why he sent it in as soon as he could).

Makes me wish I lived in texas 😳. Thanks for the input.

hey guys... does any one know if we have to include descriptions on the person bio section?? like if i'm listing research, or work, should i write something about exactly what i did?

can't wait to be done with this thing 🙄

Jesus! The TMDSAS is so long and obnoxious

I'm trying to decide whether it's worth it or not to fill the whole thing out just to apply to UT Southwestern >.<

For the two LORs should we go with our two science profs or it can it really be anyone we chose? They don't specify, but is it better to be on the "safer" side and provide two science profs since that's what most schools require anyways??

Thanks

I'm trying to decide if it's worth doing the AMCAS just to apply to Baylor.

just wondering, but can anyone clarify exactly what day the first batch is sent out? i'm waiting for my spring grades and worried i won't make it. is it exactly six weeks from when TMDSAS opened?

Last year it was June 13th, so it'll probably be around that date?

I graduated today.

My diploma handout says that transcripts that reflect everything will be available 06/10.

MEH. 😱

<- 18 year old with BS degree.

WOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

Mmk, time to go sleep now.

Hmm does anyone know what the cheapest way to get the passport sized photos that are required?

Do I just make up classes I'll be taking Fall 09 because I haven't thought that far ahead.. :scared:

Fall 09? You only put classes that you've completed up to the point of applying.

Go to a CVS and ask them to make passport photos for you. Dress up nicely! 🙂

"You must also list every course in which you are currently enrolled or plan to take before entering medical, dental or veterinary school (if known). Planned course work can be added to your application at any time through the [Coursework Updates] link."

right? I'm not sure do I put NY for all of those grades..anyone know?

Oh.. I thought TMDSAS said every "attempted" class? I may be wrong. So if you don't know then it's not an issue?

I'm not sure, I'm hoping someone with experience could enlighten us 🙂

😀 Yes yes, I know. Paging Riverie and the rest of the Baylor crew...

Did someone call me?

Hmm, since I was applying from OOS anyway, AMCAS was my application machine of choice. In fact, it wasn't worth it for me to fill out the entire TMDSAS just to apply to UT-SW. Hehehe, and I didn't! Glad I got Baylor. 😀

Passport photos: Put on a coat and tie and have someone take digital photos of you (use a plain wall as the background). Take your memory card to CVS or someplace like that and use the self serve machine.

Classes: You need to put any class that appears on your transcript, including withdraws, and retakes. Put down what you plan to take for future classes and you can always change them later.

AMCAS for Baylor only? You may as well do it. It's a good school that's dirt cheap. You may get lucky.

But then again AMCAS >>>> TMDSAS so it's not the same the other way around. 😀

I just started the AMCAS in case I do choose to try for Baylor, and... yeah, yeah, it definitely is >>>> the TMDSAS.

Talk about begging for a site redesign.

So I am in a similar boat with a few OOS-ers....I have really strong ties with Texas but I do not want to waste my time filling out the application if I am going to be glanced over.

Here's my Texas connection:
- graduated from Rice University
- my sister graduated from UT Houston
- both of my parents attended college in Texas
- both sides of my family are from the Houston area (dad from Kendleton and mom grew up in Port Arthur)
- the majority of my family still lives in Texas (mostly Houston and Dallas)
- been going down there since I was 3 months old
- I own land down there outside of Houston and in Port Aurthur

Problem: not a Texas resident (am a Cali resident)

Is it feasible for me to continue working on my TMDSAS app?

Thanks guys!

I was in the same boat, lived in texas all my life, family ties etc., but lost residency after highschool. I ended up getting 4 interviews and 1 acceptance, so it's definitely feasible. You don't have much to lose by doing TMDSAS, and it's much cheaper compared to amcas schools. If I were you, I'd just sit down for the few hours it takes and get it done, there is really very little to lose.

hmmmm...okay....looks like I'll stick with it.

Thanks for you input dd128.

and good luck this fall

Put the courses you think you'll be taking but don't pay too much attention to it. When you send in a transcript, they will automatically update your online application to reflect the new info. Just check and make sure that "iffy" 50%+ bio courses with a psych heading are counted as a science because they are only judging by a title.

haha, glad I could be so convincing 😉 Maybe I missed my calling and should go into public office...

In case anyone planned on proofreading their app via the Formatted/Printable Application option under Status of Application and Supporting Documents:

Applicants are currently not able to use the printable format.
This option should be available the beginning of June.
Our programmer has many issues he is dealing with right now because of the new cycle, and certain changes that are a priority.

You should apply. Since few OOS people apply via TMDSAS anyway, your chances actually aren't bad at all. In fact, since you have Texas connections, your chances might be even good at nabbing interviews, assuming your application is solid.

Does this mean that everything has to be complete and turned in by that date to be in the first batch of applications?

For the Chronology of activities section, do we have to follow it according to TMDSAS's example or can we do it AMCAS style? Some of the stuff on the example feels like it's not necessary or really too important.

Annnnd submitted. All I need now is a final transcript and some MCAT scores to go along with a few secondaries.

I'm scared. Hold me, Baylor crew. Hold me. 🙁

Follow TMDSAS.

When requesting transcripts, do I send it to each individual school, or do I send it to TMDSAS directly? I have transcripts for 3 universities and you have to pay for each of their transcripts so I'm hoping it's directly. Also, do I request the transcripts to be sent to me and then send them to their respective places or do I send them directly from the universities I attended to those places?

Thanks!

This is a question for both TMDSAS and AMCAS:

TMDSAS: Send to them directly, not to the individual schools. You are supposed to send the request form to the registrar of your university/-ies and ask that they include the form, but I was told in email that it is acceptable to have officially signed/stamped/sealed transcripts from the schools and just attach your form to the outside of the envelope. Of course, you'll have to package that in something else, but apparently, either way works.

AMCAS: Unsure. Not an AMCAS applicant.

AMCAS directly. Only send transcripts to AMCAS schools after you submit IF they make a specific request for them. Most schools are not set up to deal with a constant barrage of transcripts applicants might send.
