I was curious if you needed to attend a TOP 10 dental school to become a cosmetic dentist and to be recognized well? Is that a thing? Does you dental school effect your chances of being a cosmetic dentist.. like say you went private?

No difference. In your first few weeks of private practice, you will do more then your entire 2 years of clinical dentistry at whatever university you attend.

According to Boston university, BU has the best Prost program that teaches you cosmetic dentistry.

All dentistry is meant to be cosmetic. But if you want to be doing full mouth rehab cases or lots and lots of veneers and smile reconstructions, you need to do CE outside of dental school to get good enough. Just my opinion.

+1

If you truly want to be a cosmetic dentist, You MUST invest in SPEARS/KOIS and the likes. There's NO other way around it.

Those courses are year long courses taught by the best, and usually the average age of the practitioner that attends it are mid-career dentists.

Be ready to shell out a few grand to 10k for courses.

Agree with @Rainee. As a specialist .... I see ALOT of GP's handiwork. Opining only about aesthetic anterior and posterior veneers/crowns .... I see a lot of average restorations that I would never want in my mouth. Every once in awhile ... I'll see an aesthetic restoration that is so ...... natural, correct shade, proper tissue height with varying levels of translucence. Just awesome quality. This GP definitely learned about cosmetics.

Pretty much every school teaches you just enough to not be dangerous.

Find a high quality, local lab that will encourage open ended communication with treatment planning, custom shades, and the likes.

Hahaha Cosmetic dentistry. Oh man! I remember before I began dental school I actually thought this was a thing. No school is gonna teach you "cosmetic dentistry". All dentistry that is done, especially on anterior teeth, should be cosmetic or else you're doing a **** job. All schools are going to teach you the same bare necessities dentistry. The only reason you drive down the streets and see signs that say "cosmetic dentistry" is because it's a ploy for one dentist to try separate his practice from the next guys as being specialized.

Even if there were such a school it would be my recommendation not to go. Before you dive into doing elective dentistry, or learning more complex techniques and considerations to improve the appearance of conventional restorations, you first need to learn about oral health. Indeed, what you learn in dental school will give you enough to practice and master in your first few years out in practice.
IMO you should go to the oldest-lowest-costing dental school you can get into.

Keep your standards high and really consider what you're going to prescribe to people beyond just appearance. The reason I say this is because without staying grounded in the principals you'll learn in dental school you can end up doing more harm than good. Good luck.
