Touro-COM NY Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
did u do two full pages and answer why this school?

some general question about the secondary (I've been really nit picky after getting one secondary sent back to me because I didn't include a certain date)

Year of interest/student ID number: do we fill this out? it says office use only. Are we suppose to put our AACOMAS or is it referring to an ID number they will issue us and thus leave it blank?

Under where we list the names of our LOR writers, did you guys do one doctor, and two science? or did u just list whoever knew you best even if it was all doctors or all research advisors? I'm not using a premed committee but have both science letters and several physician LORs.

Nope, I have one page + a little bit on the second page. I also did not fill out anything in gray on the application because it says for office use only. I did fill in year of interest because it wasn't gray. I listed one LOR from a doc and two from science profs but I am sending all 5 of my letters.

even the marital status?? its in grey. im getting so paranoid about making everything perfect

You should do the marital status one, not the other one at the top that says "for office use only"

So its just one essay or 2 essays? Im confused with their statement, writing 2 pages on "why touro" then one additional page on all that other stuff?

are you guys filling it out in the microsoft word document? or printing it out and doing it by hand?

MS Word. You have to screw around with the formatting a bit here and there but it's not too bad. Way better than Rosalind Franklin's secondary .pdf file for anyone who applied there too lol.

I didn't do the marital status one, I believe it is in gray because some school's give preference to couples who apply together because they want to stay in the area. I don't know why else they'd need to know so I left it blank.

I wrote one essay and addressed most of the suggestions they gave in the Personal Statement instructions.

I'm filling it out in the Word document. My handwriting isn't the best. And last time I tried to fill out an application by hand, I made some mistakes...and it was in pen so I couldn't erase it so I had throw that one out and do it all over again.

Do we staple together the 2 page essay?

Do we staple together the 2 page essay?

I have been stapling my essay papers to the applications papers.

I doubt it matters though. An unnecessary staple or two shouldn't really make any one upset.

well thats nice to hear, does any1 know when they start interviewing?
also, theres a rumor out there that touro-ny apparently interviews a lot of ppl, as in they are not that selective on who they offer an interview to, which is why their waitilist is usually pretty deep? anyone have any #'s to refute/confirm that claim?

Hey everyone. I applied to this school about a week ago but my transcripts are taking forever to get there. I am a bit nervous because people are already receiving secondaries. Am I already too late? My transcript will probably get there at the end of this week.

I am wondering the same thing. If anyone has these numbers, let us know.

i dont think you're too late. they only started sending secondaries out last week. but i guess it depends on how long it takes for u to get verified.

actually my transcript made it there today. i will probably be confirmed by the end of the week (or hopefully next week). I say hopefully because I just saw that there is a $2000 deposit required at touro. I'm starting to think I should have applied later.

Does anyone know how long touro takes to review primaries before they send secondaries? Can applicants stall the secondary and complete it a month later? After that, can applicants stall the interview for another month or two? I need to get enough rejections from ontario by december before I can justify that $2000 deposit. Damn it:scared:

DO schools are great, except when it comes to their deposit policies. The schools know that they are often "back up's" and, for this reason, they often have high deposit amounts and short wait periods. You can put off the secondary and, if offered an interview, try to put that off, but the longer you wait, the chances of getting an interview and an acceptance shrink too. Its unfortunate that DO schools are so harsh with their deposit policies, but unfortunately they know the truth that DO is often a backup, so, out of security, they ask for some commitment, and if you decide to go elsewhere they get to keep your deposit. Some schools do offer installment plans with deposits where you pay a fraction when accepted and the rest at another later date. A few schools refund some or all of deposits if you withdraw, but most don't.

So if you want to wait...wait. but its probably better to be safe because no one is guaranteed an interview and if you get your app in early, chances of an interview are dramatically more in your favor.

Its nice that you're confident, but its a good idea not to be over confident...no one is guaranteed an interview, and reapplying next year can be the consequence of this....I know this first hand

thanks willthethrill. sorry things did not work out last year. everything happens for a reason! u mind if i ask what ur stats were? have you done anything differently for this year?

My essay's kinda long...7500 characters! Although, it's only about 1.5 pages typed single space, so well within the limit. I definitely had more to say in this essay than just about any of my other secondaries, being from NYC and really liking their community service approach. How long did other people write?

mine was about the same. i also had a lot to write and could have written more but i dont think it would have been a good idea

Know what you mean...not having a word count can make me ramble, but in this case, there's just so much to talk about, and they ask about 9 different things in the prompt...

I realize that Touro is focused on creating primary care physicians and I am interested in primary care, but I am also interested in psychiatry and endocrinology. If I attend this school, and I realize that I am getting ahead of myself but I want to make sure each school that I apply to is one that I want to attend, and during my four years in school I decide on psychiatry or something would I not be able to pursue that coming from Touro? I don't want to limit my options before I even begin my education.

Although a school may stress that they are primary care oriented, that doesn't limit you to just that. If you have the grades/research/boards scores then you have a lot of options. Do well and explore your interests during your electives, that's why they have them. Since Touro NY won't have a match list until after this year, you really can't tell make too many assumptions until then, but no matter where you go to school, if you have the credentials mentioned above, you can definitely specialize.

Does TouroCOM really hand out interviews/secondaries to everyone that meets the minimum? I didn't look it up, but I assume it's around 3.0/23+, so does touro interview thousands? Also does anyone know the acceptance rate w/ interview?

thats the same question I have, mins are 3.0 sgpa/3.0cgpa/24

so that means they would be interviewing A LOT of ppl if secondary = interview

Yeah, I don't want to seem unappreciative about an invite, because I'm obviously happy, but I'd like to have a realistic expectation of what I'm getting into since it's going to cost about 1,000 give or take to turn in my secondary, fly, hotel, etc.

I guess I can see them interviewing everyone, but I still can't really wrap my mind around the sheer number of people who have above 3.0, 24+, since I would imagine most people have that, unless you are an unusual applicant with a low gpa and like a 43 MCAT, or vice versa.

I'm a first-time applicant here, but I can't imagine that they interview thousands of applicants. That is a lot of time and money for them too.

than the secondary=interview logic is flawed

Not necessarily, they just might be more selective in who they send secondaries too. Plus I just got an email stating they received my supplemental and will notify me when my file is complete (aka when my LORs are in) and I will receive an interview invite via email when they start handing them out.

than the secondary=interview logic is flawed

I emailed them about this. They said a secondary means does indeed equal a guaranteed to get an interview.

I can't believe nobody on here besides me asked them about this yet. LOL.

Do you all just not really care about TouroCOM NY? I was literally checking my mail every 30 minutes the day after I sent out the email, dieing for a response. I was very excited when I got there response and found out that a secondary does equal a guaranteed interview.

I mean, this is the reason I studied my butt off for the past few years. I don't think I could ever just sit there wondering if I indeed had an interview for a school, if all it would take to find out was for me to send out a quick email.

I was more concerned about who they send out secondaries to, since it seems that anyone who meets the minimum gets a secondary.

I was looking through old threads and it seems like there were 150 people on high wait list, and then there was also medium, low wait list, so it seems like they interview a lot of people.

I had always assumed the secondary was a guaranteed interview. Besides, the circumstances under which they grant this interview are a bit strange, and personally, the speed at which I find out the answer to that question doesn't really matter because I'm not ready to get locked into a $2200+flight+hotel ordeal at the moment anyway if the interview goes well.

My question of "how long can I hold out on paying you while still having this interview" wouldn't really go over well with admissions either I don't think. lol

Thanks for getting a solid answer though Dr. Dre. and thank you for the Chronic 2001.
XXplosive is perhaps my favorite song in hip hop.

Not sure if you guys are still unsure of whether a secondary leads to an interview. If you are then I can tell you that a secondary == interview invite unless they changed it for the class of 2015. I was an applicant for the class of 2014, received my secondary ($200) and was invited. It was also stated by Obed that a receiving a secondary is an invite. Now, understand that an interview doesn't mean an acceptance. My interview was pretty harsh as the interviewers didn't show much facial or vocal expressions, but other interviewees had a complete opposite experience. Guess it depends on which tag team combo you end up with. I did ultimately get accepted, but decided not to attend for other reasons.

Hope this helped!

thanks. now there is one more reason to wait this secondary

About how long after your primary was verified and sent to Tuoro did you guys receive a secondary application/invite?

Anyone want to tell me how long it took to receive a secondary? Want to know if I should be getting nervous!😱

my primary was verified on 6/6..and i got this secondary 7/25ish, i think they have just started the reviewing process..i wouldn't worry too much if you have just submitted your aacomas

my primary was verified back in late June and i got the secondary July 29 so its only been recent that they started handing out the secondaries.

I believe the minimums according to admissions over there

are 3.0 gpa's
and 24 mcat; but i'm not sure meeting this automatically means secondary because if the rumors r true that secondary = interview than they probably screen a little more than that.
is the gpa cumulative or science or just pre-med classes

Any new word on additions to rotation sites? Would be nice if they could land a couple in the 5 boroughs! I mean, come on, you have Caribbean-med-school students rotating all over Brooklyn. I don't see why the locals can't nab a few of them spots. ($$$???)

Recently contacted TouroCOM and I was told they send a secondary/interview to everyone who meets the minimum (3.0/24) as a result, I won't be sending in my secondary. Good luck to everyone who does tho

Wait, so they offer interviews to EVERYONE that has >3.0/24??? How can they possibly interview so many people?

thats the point i've been trying to make, they interview a lot of ppl and have a huge waitlist

Thanks for contacting them. I was holding off on this secondary and probably will not submit it now.

200 secondary + flight + hotel + rental car + lost wages a work. Just cannot justify that if they interview everyone.

Good luck to those that do submit!! :luck:

Why does it matter how many people they interview? Your acceptance chances are based off of what percentage of interviewees get accepted. According to mdapps, its 31/78, or about 40%. This is on the low end of interview/acceptance stats for DO schools, but still, 40% is pretty high for a good school in NYC. I think 50% is about the average for all schools, and if they tend to wait list a lot of people later on, early interviewees have an even better shot of acceptance.

That is a lot of interviews! I wonder what percentage of those folks could handle the Big Apple beyond their happy little trip here. You gotta be tough to survive here folks... and school ain't gonna teach ya bout that. I would put that number below 40%, no doubt.

I don't think the acceptance rate is 40% because they interview everyone who meets the minimum stats. The Admissions Assistant was the one who responded to me, I was not able to get in touch with the Admissions Director. Anyways, 200+flight+hotel+etc is too much money, if they aren't really "interested" in me.

The majority of applicants do not use mdapps. In fact the majority of people on sdn do not even use mdapps. The data is more than likely skewed quite a bit.
