Touro-COM NY Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You start immediately, but can only permanently join the class if someone drops out within the 5 week time frame.

Well it is August and after a long wait on the high wait list there is no acceptance but no letter of rejection. Obed mentioned that some candidates would be picked for early admission into next years class. From reading the posts I can see that some lucky folks got an offer, I wonder if there are any more offers to be made or is it all over.......Anyone else out there still hanging by a thread?

Hey all... I applied to this school last cycle and unfortunately I never heard any word from them. It may be beacuse I applied in February because my stats are average (27 MCAT and 3.5 GPA, 3.2 sGPA), but they never even sent me a rejection letter or even a secondary application. Do you have to be qualified to receive a secondary app or something? They should at least tell you that you're rejected lol.

I'm applying again in the upcoming cycle. Does anyone know the average stats of the matriculated students? I retook my MCAT today so hopefully I get a boost, and I'll be doing a Master's program starting in August. Also, for those that are in the school right now, how does it compare to other DO schools? Thanks.

As far as I know Touro does not automatically send secondaries to every applicant like other medical schools. They do screen but looking at your numbers you should have made it through, perhaps you were lacking in volunteer work, shadowing experiences etc. Also by February they had filled most of their positions for the class and waitlist. For DO programs the best strategy is to apply super early. I know sometimes circumstances are prohibitive but apply early this time. All the best.

What are the average stats for this school?

Also, keep in mind that the stats for 2014 are higher than 2013, and I'm assuming 2015 has continued that trend as well.

Did anyone on the wait list get an email today saying that they are unable to offer you a spot in the class of 2016? Is this just from last cycle or for the new application cycle? The subject of the email was "High Wait list". I kind of figured I had to reapply so I did, but not sure which application cycle this is dealing with.

Would you mind pointing me in the direction of this detailed interview section on SDN? I've been a member on here for a while now, and had always thought the only interview feedback would be on here...I clicked on the feedback link at the top, but didn't have much luck finding detailed info on interviews - mostly bar graphs ranking interviewee opinions on the experiences and some brief comments...am I missing some kind of information gold mine?! Any advice would be oh so great!

I live in NY and am thinking about Trouro COM, as I am really interested in osteopathic medicine. I would really like to know why so many people are wary of it, and why admissions stats are so low. I am hoping someone could give me an honest answer, and perhaps someone who actually goes there could give a brief, critical summary of the school - the good and the bad.

Also, I need some advice in osteopath shadowing. How do you connect with one?

NY is very friendly towards osteopathic medicine- in general, people are either not informed at all or very supportive of DOs, but certainly not wary of it in my experience.

The admissions stats are not low, so I'm not really sure what you're getting at there. There is a "Find a DO" search tool that you can use via the AOA's website. That should help to find a physician to shadow.

And another small note- we are osteopathic physicians, not osteopaths.

Perhaps try checking out the more updated thread for this year's cycle:

I got an interview and still have to select the date. I hate that TOURO requires such an exorbitant deposit to hold your spot if you get accepted and then only gives you two weeks to do so. My stats are a 3.6(AACOMAS) and a 32R. Does anyone think I should be safe waiting until a January date to schedule my interview and still get in or should I go ahead and choose a December date? Please let me know what your strategies are for dealing with this. Thanks!!!

A lot of schools charge $2,000 for the deposit to reserve your spot in the incoming class; not all give you 2 weeks to do so. I would interview earlier rather than later because there are more spots available earlier on so you have a better chance of getting in.

Nearly all of them give more than 2 weeks to do so... I'm so conflicted. Any more advice, guys?

yea that's what I meant, most give you more than 2 weeks. have you gotten in anywhere else? if not, then you don't wanna any opportunity. Also, I'm sure you are a good candidate but an interview is also not an automatic acceptance. Go to your interview, get accepted, then debate.
