Touro-COM NY Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
has anyone sent their secondary in and gotten a date yet? do they give you options or what?

They just sent an email saying that if your application is complete then they will send an interview invite, and if it is not complete they will let us know what we need. It also stated that they are not open for interviews as of yet.

Does TUCOM-NY waitlist a lot of people early on in the game? I know that they did a lot with the applicants who did not submit until later in the process last year (going by what I read on here). I'm taking the MCAT in a few weeks, so I'm not exactly early either. At least my primaries are complete (not verified YET), my D.O. letter is on Interfolio, and the other letters are on their way as well.
Anyhow, that's all I gotta say 'bout that 😉

I think they must waitlist lots of people since they seem to hand out interview to everyone who meets their cut off....

I know they usually have a huge waitlist late in the process. However, I am assuming that a majority of the list is generated from those who apply later. From what I remember from the posts in last year's cycle, a lot of those who were waitlisted were those who did not submit secondaries until the year of intended admission.

I'm thinking that they are less likely to waitlist within the first few months of interviews. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

hmmm i got a secondary today...and thus an interview. I am quite skeptical now after reading the above posts.... about the screening...... I think I am still gonna take the interview....simply because i might not get an interview anywhere else

But i hope to god they dont actually hand out interviews to people with 3.0/24+

it just seems too ridiculous to be believable. They said they screen. I assume that means experience, essay, etc all from the primary. Not just grades. THere is plenty of people on SDN with stats better then 3.0 and 24 who didnt get secondaries

I don't think thats true; pretty sure everyone who has 3.0/24 gets secondary invite.

I never took a psychology, sociology, or any of the other behav. classes touro wants. I called them about it and was informed that I only need to have them finished before matriculation. At best, I can only take them in the spring because of my current school/work commitments. Should I bother with the secondary?

Yeah, this is how it works at all the other schools too. You just need to have the courses done before matriculation.

Think about all the people applying who are juniors...they may have a bunch of these requirements missing. They still apply though, knowing that they'll be done the requirements before matriculation.

There are probably also people out there who haven't even completed Physics 2 or one of the pre-reqs or something. They can still apply, knowing that they'll be taking Physics 2 in the upcoming year.

Ive done some light googling on touro NY, and from the limited amount of pictures I've seen of the school, it doesn't look too promising to me. Forgive me, but Im from texas, and used the to the huge wide open campuses, with intimidating buildings etc., I know your not going to find any of that in NYC, but honestly it doesnt look very comforting to me as a medical school. Can anyone possibly comment on the quality of the facilities there?

And I'm quite skeptical on the secondary, it seems from previous posters on this thread that a completed secondary does include an invite. It just sounds like the excessive secondary fee of 2 Benjamins is justified because your receiving an interview invite from them. I'm not sure what to think of this school quite yet, since its soo new, and not having accreditation yet........I guess more research is in store for me

Most medical schools are one or two building colleges, and mostly MD schools sit on large, open, university settings. DO schools typically are solitary or have a few other health science graduate buildings intertwined. I feel an allure to Touro-NY because of the location and the look, being intertwined into the city, riding the subways in a white coat. Totally legit. My two cents, but don't be too excited for large open intimidating campus and buildings for most med schools and specifically osteopathic ones. Do a google street view of the addresses for schools you are interested in, you will a pattern!

I'm a first year at TouroCOM NY and I'm going to address a few points that have come up- hopefully I can be of some help in clarifying things for applicants/potential applicants.

I realize that Touro is focused on creating primary care physicians and I am interested in primary care, but I am also interested in psychiatry and endocrinology. If I attend this school, and I realize that I am getting ahead of myself but I want to make sure each school that I apply to is one that I want to attend, and during my four years in school I decide on psychiatry or something would I not be able to pursue that coming from Touro? I don't want to limit my options before I even begin my education.
No school will ever limit your options- ultimately, where you match is an indicator of your own ability to excel in your clinical rotations and perform well on the COMLEX or USMLE.
For reference- our clinical dean is a psychiatrist, and has several good connections in the NYC area.

I came off the list a few short days before classes began this year.
It does seem like they tend to place more students on the list later in the cycle, although their application cycles generally run very late. I interviewed in January, and some of the people I interviewed with were still accepted right into the class.

Can anyone possibly comment on the quality of the facilities there?
The facilities have been more than adequate in my experience. The overall state of the building could be described as utilitarian. The lecture halls have fairly comfortable chairs, and the acoustics are good. There are lots of study rooms, that are pretty bare- just a table, chairs, and whiteboard. But what else do you need in a study room?
The anatomy lab has good air circulation. The histology lab has microscopes that are each equipped with a camera that projects the image onto the laptop screen (a personal favorite feature of mine... no staring into the microscope for hours).
The research facilities are a few weeks/months from completion- there is actually a significant amount of space/money set aside for research compared to most DO schools, although it is all voluntary.

You can't wear the white coat out in public! Haha.
However, being in the city is great. I am looking forward to september (lots of jewish holidays off) so that I can go out and enjoy the city more.
BTW, I worked in council bluffs for a few years.

If anyone has any specific questions, feel free to send a PM, although I am busy and don't check back very often.

Good luck to all.

Does anyone know what percentage of interviewees are granted acceptances? I would assume not very many since anyone who gets a secondary gets an interview...

Just happy that I get an interview lol

Does anyone know when they generally start interviewing? Im gonna look at last years thread.

Thanks, good to know.

This will be the most convenient interview for me, about a 10 min travel time lol

Hey guys,
I received a secondary (yay!) but I'm like so not feeling the prompt. Did you guys readdress issues you already spoke about in the first essay for the second?

Because, really, this could fit into just one big essay and we can call it a day. There's no need for "on a separate sheet of paper, consider addressing these areas" when I already spoke about it in the first essay.

Also, I am so discouraged that the interview doesn't seem to be that meaningful. Oh well. An interview is an interview.....

I am pretty sure they are just giving you a broad prompt for a single essay. The "on a second sheet of paper" really means "don't try to write on this document, make it seperate." Someone stop me if I'm wrong.

Personally, I love the prompt. It lets you write whatever you want to write about. See it as an opportunity to make a case for yourself in your own words and on your own terms.

On their website, I saw that they wanted 8 credits of bio, 8 credits of physics, ect.. and 2 credits of bio lab, 2 credits oh physics lab. At my college each semester of bio is 4.0 credits, and the lab is included. The lab itself is 0 credits, but our lab grade is incorporated into our bio grade. Does anyone know if touro NY accepts that?

man im hoping so, I didnt really see that, just assumed all of my pre-reqs would be sufficient. Seems like it shouldnt be an issue to worry about really

You'll stand out as a huge douche if you wear your white coat on the subway.

Only thing more douche would be wearing the white coat on the subway with a stethoscope around your neck.

Got my secondary from Touro NY today! I understand it's a new school and it's not "fully" accredited yet, but we all have to start somewhere. Plus, Touro NY is a branch campus of Touro Mare Island and they're fully accredited and been around for more than a decade, so there's plenty of legitamacy to this school. I know a lot of people are doubting the exorbitant cost of application/attending interview/securing a seat, but in the grand scheme of things, it's a small cost to pay when/if there are no better options. I'm going for it. Plus, I love the fact that they're investing in research. I am definitely going to take advantage of that. Maybe they won't have the budget for cutting edge research like you may find at more established institutions, but it seems they're making the most of what they have and that's what matters. Most importantly, new school + new research program should equate to easier access to performing research. 😀 Not to mention, the clinical experiences in a city like New York should be priceless. Now let's just hope I can rock the interview and get accepted! :xf:

No offense, but it sounds like you work for the school...haha...giving them some free advertising

Haha I second this. I too am excited for the prospects about the school, but that was some very unprompted advertising. Good luck to you, though

No offense taken. I can see how my overly enthusiastic comments can be construed to arrive at your stated conclusion. Come to think of it...if you guys think that what I wrote was as good as advertising...then it seems i already have parts of my secondary essay written! Now, relatively speaking, yes this school is in the bottom half of even my rankings. But by itself, it's a very good school. I'm in a position where I don't have many options, so it means a lot that a school is willing to give me the chance of proving to them, at this stage, that I belong in medical school.

got the secondary lastweek. I think I am withdrawing so hopefully someone gets an invite here!

You would think. From what I have heard there aren't too many rotations being offered in the city. I think there is 1 hospital on board and it's in the Bronx. Being that it is NYC and all, one would assume this would change in the near future.

looks like its official! just got the email for invite!!

happy for this one since its my first interview where i dont have to take a plane and travel too far

Why don't you call/e-mail and ask them? It's probably better than worrying about it.

oops, double post

likewise, but I haven't gotten a confirmation yet. I hope the metro system isn't too difficult to figure out.

Figure it all out before you get there. (before you leave). Check out the MTA maps and be sure to give the lines a check online to see if there are any service issues beforehand as well.

Use Hop Stop also.

Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions. NYC subway system sounds a lot more intimidating than it really is.

Hey,
I got an interview invite for Oct. 20th. Anyone else?

When they ask to include a passport size picture, do you think they want specifically a passport picture with all the regulations about not smiling, etc or do you think if you just included a picture that was about 2x2 it would be okay?

Thanks for any help in advance!

They weren't really specific, so I just sent in a 2x2 picture with me smiling

I had CVS do a passport picture, sans smile, but with a friendly look. It probably doesn't make much of a difference as long as it's passport sized which is the only qualifier they had.

I've got a follow-up: I wore a button shirt in mine, anyone wear a tie? While I certainly plan to wear one in person I thought it would just be unnatural for the photo.

I sent in a 2x2 with a nice friendly "please accept me into your medical school because I'm a great person" smile. I'm wearing a white sweater vest. I didn't go to cvs or anything official. I just resized a photo that I had from before and made it 2x2, printed that out and sent it out.

I wore a white shirt with a dark blue tie

I don't think it matters, just as long as you're not wearing something ridiculous or offensive

I sent in my facebook default. I'm in a plaid shirt and smiling with half a shadow across my face. I don't think they really care as long as you're not taking bong rips.
