TOUROCOM-NY Acceptances

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So ....

I just finished my interview at TOUROCOM. I think the interviews on 2/28 may have been a little less relaxed than previous interviews!!!

One interviewer only asked me one question (you grew up on an Air Force base?) and stared through my head for the rest of the interview.

The other guy cut me off in the middle of a story and tried to throw me off and upset me!!! The comments went something like this:

Me - Yes, I am very proud to be one of the youngest AATB Certified Tissue Bank Specialists. I practically started the transplant program from scratch, with help from my Chief Scientific Officer. We are always in contact with ...

Interviewer - *interupts me* Everything you have said up to this point has not impressed me... you're not accepted to TOUROCOM ....

*pause* ... (can feel my heart beating in my face) ...

Interviewer - what do you do?...

Me - *in my head i'm thinking ... i run across the street and grab some defib paddles and shock the crap out of my heart because i just had an acute MI!!!*

Then I give the standard answer of, "I'd go back to my job and continue to help my community, retake the MCAT, possibly get a Master's, and then apply to Tourocom again ...

Talk about a brutal, brutal question!!!

Overall the interview was just that ... and interview ... less of a conversation, more of a rapid fire judgement day ... lol

The faculty was very nice and Obed was a great guy. All the people in my interview group were pretty nice too (I know some of yall are on SDN!).

Good luck to everyone ... I'll be keeping my fingers crossed!

don't worry during my interview they told me my reasons wouldn't cut it. I stuck with what I was saying and I earned acceptance. Hopefully it will go the same for you

Hey everyone! I just got had my interview yesterday 2/27 and overall I'd say it was a great experience. It was my first interview so I was in awe of just about everything from the school, the faculty, and meeting the other students.

The day started out w/a brief presentation from the school. We had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Diamond, Obed, and some of the other Deans. They made it clear that as the first class, the curriculum would be extremely challenging so that the reputation of the school would be a strong one. However, they also made it a point to let us know that they would be very supportive throughout the 4 years of med school. They also mentioned that within the first few months they would work to identify the strongest students and have them lead the way in helping other students achieve academic success. Personally, I find this entire network of support to be important especially when it comes to building commeradery among the students who will have the distinct opportunity to say that they were the first class for what will be a reputable institution.

As for the interview, it is closed file which really levels the playing field. It also meant that a lot of the questions were really personalized and aimed at seeing how well you can communicate and how passionate you are about the profession. My two interviewers were very easy to talk to. One was the Dean for Clinical Years and the other was a lady from Basic Sciences. I'll just list a few sample questions that I got. Interviews are supposed to run for 30 min., but mine actually went to 50min. and it really flew by (we'll find out if that was a good thing or not soon enough).

Tell us about yourself.
Why did you choose osteopathic medicine?
Tell us what osteopathic medicine means in your own words.
Why did you apply to Touro?
Did you apply to both allopathic and osteopathic schools?
What do you see as the biggest problem in healthcare?
What would you think about implementing a Universal Healthcare system?
Can you think of a time that would made a positive impact on another student?
If (theoretically) you didn't get in, what would you do?

You also get a chance to ask them questions. I took this opportunity to ask them why they chose their careers and what they thought was most rewarding and most challenging. They responded pretty openly and warmly and it gave them a chance to talk t you.

Just a few final things...I got the impression that they felt that being a leader in the Harlem community was kind of a big deal to them. It lets the residents know that the school isn't there just to take the community's money while students practice elsewhere. They're planning on community service projects geared at exposing young kids about medicine early so they know that it is an option in life. Also, go through the school catalog. They liked that I pointed out some things about their curriculum such as electives like Medical Spanish or Pregnancy Partners. If you have time to learn more about the profession check out the book "The D.O" by Norman Gevitz. I mentioned it in my interview and one of the interviewers actually read it and it gave us something to talk about. Finally, relax and have fun out there. You'll meet some great people and you'll get to see an awesome city. You'll also learn a lot about the visions of the school, the profession, and yourself. Sorry for the long post, but I hope it was helpful! Thanks and take care!

thanks Doc1228 ... and congrats on getting in

let the nail-biting, hair-pulling countdown begin!!!

Dang Efren, your interview was 50 mins long?!?! Mine was close to half an hour and I felt that was long until I came out of the interview...and I agree with him...they really do want to know that you've been a strong leader in the past, and you plan to pursue those leadership qualities in medicine. Neither of my interviewers were DO, both were PhD and I'm assuming would be the faculty for basic sciences. They were really nice and really wanted to get to know me.

Some questions I was asked were:

Why is osteopathic medicine right for you?
What kind of exposure to medicine have you come across?
Why are you interested in primary care versus a specialty?
How does health care in India (where I was born and raised) differ from health care in the US? (the answer to this question led to another question which led to another question...i kinda liked that..made it more conversational)
What other schools have you applied to? Just DO or MD as well? What would you do if you got into an MD school in your state (only question that really stumped me)
Name a conflict that you came across and how did you solve it?
How do you feel about being the first class at Touro? Are you willing to put in 70-80hrs/week?

There were more that branched from these questions, but I can't stress enough to have honest answers. I prepared for the interview, but wasn't expecting the questions that I was given. Instead of preparing an answer at the moment that I thought they might want to hear, I was honest, and they complimented me a few times on certain aspects of my interview. I can only hope those are good signs. But yea, hope these tips/questions help future interviewees 🙂

I've had that question asked abruptly too @ Upstate Univ.

"if you dont get into medical school this year... what will you do?"

the waiting after the interview continues.. this is all actually quite frightening. haha and to think in the end it seems to have come down to personality? sigh...

HAHAHHAHA...well if that was the ONLY factor, i doubt you'd have anything to worry about 🙂

Good luck to all of you that recently interviewed. Hopefully if you got a good vibe it will turn out well. My interview (I was part of the first group) was totally laid back. I'm not sure...but it seems like some of the questions being asked now are a little more comprehensive. I still mentioned most everything that people have been talking about, but wasn't directly asked a lot of that stuff in my interview.

And this is totally strange...At the end of the day I said thank you to one of my interviewers. He shook my hand and said: "Thanks...I think you're really going to like this school." I eventually got in...so I guess if you feel good about your interview it might eventually work in your favor.

Native New Yorkers- What are good locations to check out for apartments?

-chicagoan

You'll find some info on the first page of the Touro Class of 2011 thread in the osteopathic forum. However, let me quote what HousingDo (a native) suggested,

"LKoffman, it was I, HousingDO who told you that Harlem can be a little sketchy at night. Mind you, that is in comparison to Boston. I did high school there and there is a difference. However, you need not fear. It's just the side streets that people should watch out for. Main streets are all good all the time.

And listen everyone, the East side of Morningside Heights, on the East Side of Morningside Park is not a nice area. Despite tons of Columbia (my alma mater) students living there, it is not nice. Just thought I'd clear that up. And by not nice, I mean there are CRACKHOUSES on many blocks. That's all I'm saying. No biggie. Just crack.

Upper West side is great and several parts of both Spanish Harlem, Harlem and Washington Heights, Inwood and several other nearby areas are really well suited for us.

I'm going to show you guys apartments that are also on the A/C line rather than just the Red lines. The red lines land 1 avenue from Touro and the A/C arrives 2 avenues away. That line is a good option. I live on that line."

Hope that helped (personally I think it's good to stay on the west side of town as far as our commute goes). Woud suggest looking at an online metro map if you can.

if that were the only factor then we would both be in.. tee hee

Speaking to Obed recently, the interviewers basically learned more good questions to ask from our intial interviews. So for that, I think the first couple of batches of interviewees ruined it for you guys. Blame Clement.

But I think we all know the correct answers to these questions. We know what schools want to hear. They want you to have a real reason why you chose DO school over MD schools. I think they want you to have an open mind, but a bias towards the holistic approach and treating the underserved. Ad the honesty of what brought you to the interview in the first place and you should be able to give them answers that feel more visceral than brainy. I think that's what they're looking for because they can evaluate the brainy side using our stats.

And from the housing side, I work with 3 different brokerage firms purposely to have access to all of the available listings in the areas above 96th Street and below the Bronx. I work all of Upper Manhattan, which has a huge pendulum swing to what its costs can be. I have many relationships with landlords in the area and I'm working on convincing 3 of them right now to convert their buildings into strictly student housing. My 2 main obstacles there are some of the few remaining tenants in their 'currently under renovation' buildings and the issue of payment during the 3 months of summer we have. They want to be sure they won't lose 25% of the year's income to cater to special crowd.

Anyway, apart from that, if you do not have relationships with owners or haven't worked the area and become well-known for some years, all you have access to are the REBNY listings. These are general listings that are up for any and all brokers to view and show. They're more difficult to get access to and therefore, are rarely known before-hand. Why is this important?

The truth of the matter is that any of you can do most of what I do to find an apartment. However, without resources and access, it will take you 2 months to find an apartment that I will find in 2 days. The question is: What is your time worth to you? And, of course, this is assuming that you're present, onsite, in NY to exercise those resources. If you're from out of town, DO NOT try to find your place on your own. You will not get what you're looking for.

It's all about volume. Whoever looks at the most apartments, finds the best one at the best price. Well, here's the thing. I've looked at thousands of apartments, to the point where I've seen a couple of them again and didn't even realize it until I got there. I preview all of the apartments so that you don't have to. When I started, I averaged, 10-15 apartment viewings on my own to find 3-4 that truly fit my client's wants and budget (mind you, this is for New Yorkers, who know the market a little bit) and now I preview about 6-8 apartments to find 2-3 that would work. It's a much more efficient process and the landlords prefer tenants coming through us because you come prescreened and packaged for delivery.

BTW, check your credit scores and start fixing any things that are off. This will affect your deposit amount. The higher risk you are, the greater deposit required, if they even accept you. Also, get those taxes done (you need to for FAFSA anyway) and have those and the taxes of your guarantors (if needed) ready. Have 2-3 references (preferably in letter form) ready to go and be prepared to make decisions when I take you out. When you find the one you want, I guarantee you, you are not the only one who wants it. Gotta move fast in the city.

Anyway, anyone with housing questions call me at (917) 517-0220 or email me at [email protected]. My name is Jason Bravo. I'll login to the class network hopefully today. Talk to you all soon. Also, I've got more stuff than the guys the school recommends, but the spoke to Obed before I did and they only wanted to use one company. I also have owners submitting sales offers for their buildings to Touro so they can purchase housing apt space for us. But you've got a little time. I'm gearing up and getting everything setup for us.

Hi All,

I've been trying to call Touro all week to figure out if I am complete with them. Unfortunately, the 212-851-1199 x2003 mailbox is full and no one ever picks up. Is there any other way to contact them (other than email - I've tried that too 😉)? Any other numbers I can try?

Thanks!

Well,
I use 212-851-1198 and I use the 2003 extension. I usually get Tameka, the front desk receptionist, but at least someone picks up. Try that one.

Seems like that number goes to the same number as the other (the extensions are the same). Thanks though! I'll keep trying 👍

It was a compliment, Clement.

Oh, yeah, I got through on 1198 line and they said Obed's out til Mon.

Did anyone else get that scholarship info about a week ago that was a 750 word essay for the CHANCE to get whopping $1,000 scholarship? Not to sound ungrateful, but in the same time it would take me to write a 750 word essay that reads like normal English, I could have made $1,000 at Wendy's.

Unfortuantely I have to agree with you, even though it did say at least $1,000. I thought to myself that unless it was an essay I could recycle, I'd rather just work for a $1,000, this way I could be getting it for sure and not be going through yet another selection process, and heaven forbid they have a secondary application or better yet an interview. I didn't want to say anything cause I didn't want to sound ungrateful/unappreciatetive.🙁

I know, that's why I was doing my cat stretch (you know, like cracking your knuckles and what not  ). Hope to meet all you cats soon 😀 and thanks for the compliment.

BTW guys, not sure if you've been following the yahoo link posts, but looks like we're not going to qualify for applying to that scholarship! Sign into yahoo...I know, I know, you're hopelessly disappointed.

Congrats to all that were accepted to TouroNY. I too am looking to go this school also. I wanted to let everyone know that SDN has listed Touro College NY on the interview feedback section. If it is possible for people to help post up replies for future interviewers, I would truly be grateful. Thanks

Anyone from the 2-27 and 2-28 round of interviews hear back from Tourocom?

Just curious! ... and crazy nervous!

Anyone from the 2-27 and 2-28 round of interviews hear back from Tourocom?

Just curious! ... and crazy nervous!

nope...im guessing we'd be hearing this week. I try my best to distract myself from thinking about it....never mind the fact that i log on SDN five times a day to see if anyone from that batch got accepted...😎 got my fingers crossed and putting my faith in God 😳

when did you receive your secondary and how long after did you get an interview?

I applied in the first week of January, got my secondary in the mail shortly thereafter, but didn't get back to school until about Jan. 15, so I got my secondary then. I sent it in February 5, and they probably received it about February 12 because I sent it from Texas. I got my interview invite March 1, and my choices were the 7th, 13th, and 14th of March. I'm interviewing on the 14th.

But is it just me or is this class filling up really fast? They said that the entering class is 125. Looking at our yahoo accepted/going to Touro group there are already 36 members meaning that there are only 89 left! and that is only if everyone who got accepted and sent in the deposit is in the group, more realistically since some shun the internet they probably have atleast 40-45 people who said they are going to the school. They started interviewing in January...If they keep going at this rate the class should be full by the end of begining of May if not sooner in my opinion. So my advice for anyone applying take the earliest interview date they are offering.

Disclaimer: Do not panic after reading this... this is just an observation🙂

at our interview (feb 27) they said that for the last month (between jan and feb), they sent out 36 acceptances, out of which 24 have sent in their deposits thus securing their spots for the 2011 class. That means starting from last week's interviews, there are a 101 spots still available. Its just in their best interests to accept the good applicants who might have interviewed early, instead of prolonging acceptances, in the chance that they might lose a strong candidate to some other school.

With that said, good luck to everyone awaiting a decision/interview. :luck:

At the 2-28 interview I was in a cab with Obed and another applicant. I asked Obed about the acceptance numbers directly.

He stated that they received 800 applications in January. Since, they have interviewed 2 times a week, between 9 and 14 applicants a day. As of 2-28, he stated that they have accepted 60-something students BUT only 29 had sent in their deposits.

Not sure why we have a big number discrepancy from the 27th to the 28th (amathew's comment) but just wanted to share the info that I was told!!!

Good luck to everyone ... I hope to hear back in a couple of days and hopefully will be meeting you all come the end of summer!

i interviewed on 2-27 also and heard two days later from a friend involved at the school that they were sending out letters in "a few days" already. so im hoping that we should be getting stuff this week. i also got good interview feedback, so im crossing my fingers - but its looking good. i hope.

Oops! It might have been 60 something, but thats a lot of acceptances considering that they'd probably have around 90 interviewees thus far. Hmm I'm hoping what they actually consider to reject a student 🙁 *think happy thoughts*

I've had that question asked abruptly too @ Upstate Univ.

"if you dont get into medical school this year... what will you do?"

truthfully, many schools ask this question and its not something to be afraid of or fearful of. They just want to see where you stand and how serious and devoted you are to getting into med school.

So what do you do IF you don't get in? You reapply! You do a master's or you retake classes, you do anything and everything possible to strengthen your application and make yourself a stronger applicant but in no means do you give up on your passion and your dream.

hope that helps.

ok so i interviewed on the 27th and i rememeber him saying that they interviewed 90something so far, and accepted 63... 20something of which put down a deposit... so that leaves give or take 100 spots.... so yeah... take the earliest date possible, and make sure u put thought into the interview.. looks like a bad one gets u out and a good one gets u in.. on a basic level of course.... amathew im right there with u with the nerves... haha checking email 15 times a day... *hope and pray to get in*

ok so this is ridiculous, but im literally checking my mail every time i come to my desk...which is like every 20 mins or something. OMG i would be an emotional wreck if i get rejected after this rollercoaster of emotions. I've already started on a bad day with my parents getting into a car accident and my dad being hospitalized 🙁 I hope this trend doesn't continue throughout the day.

For those of you who were accepted, what was the longest time between interview and getting your acceptance email. I know they said within two weeks, but just wanted to know whether we should be expecting it today or tomorrow, or should i hold on to my nerves til next tuesday 🙄

Hmm, anyone else having problems getting through to the school by phone today? 🙂

Stop the madness, amathew you are actually making me nervous, and I already got in. I am really hoping that you get in, and each time I look to read your post, I am hoping it is an acceptance, but no it is you worrying again. Take my word for it, you are going to drive yourself insane for no reason, at this point there is nothing you can do to make this come any faster. And don't you dare say it is easy for me to say cause I am in, not true. I was in your same postion last year after interviews, and also after my touro ny interview. please trust me when I say this STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER. Please for the rest of the day, and for a couple days stop checking your e-mail, and find something else to do to occupy your time. go running, clean your room, go do something else anything PLEEEASE. my acceptance came in on a friday, and I didn't even see it until sunday, cause I was driving myself insane just like you, and realized I had to stop and go do something else. I am sorry to hear about your dad, I wish him a speddy recovery, and I really hope you get in, so please step away from the computer, and I better not see you post anything else here unless it is an acceptance.

I'm unplugging my work internet ... my next post will be about my acceptance (or rejection) ... oh jeez ...

best of luck!

I interviewed on the 14th of February. My group got acceptances 10 days later, on Friday the 24th. So I would expect your group to probably hear something tomorrow--Friday, 10 days later!! Just to add to your emotional stress😛 the emails arrived around 10:30am Pacific time--I checked my email in the morining 9AM, and had not heard anything and decided I would not check till the evening, before I left my research lab around 8pm, and oh let me tell you seeing that message in Gmail with the subject: Letter of Acceptance/Hard copy to follow....... was the GREATEST feeling in the world!!!!!Celebrated with fellow lab mates and toasted over a couple of pints of Guinesss!!!! I for one will NEVER forget that moment!!!😍 😍 👍

I hope the best for all of you poor souls stressing now!!! And remember to enjoy that moment if you are lucky enough to get one of those acceptance letters soon. BTW, my class deposit check arrived today in NYC at 11Am so, if anyone is keeping tabs that makes approximately 20 something paid MSI' s for Tourocom NY.

Cheers!!

omg i know i decided the same thing.. i was checking like a crazy person and i decided not to check it at school and to ONLY check it when i came home at night (round 9 anyway).. keeps me from crying and screaming in the library.. haha im realllly hoping to get in too but amathew, there isnt anything more to do... and u already put ure best face forward so just wait... its a matter or a few days at most. tho we'll prob get a letter today.. please dont stress. i was the same way and i was on the phone with my boyfriend freaking out and u just gotta keep ure chin up and wait... and keep hoping. Terribly sorry about ure dad i hope he gets better sooon. i know how car accidents are, ive had a terrible one myself. dont worry bad luck is just as superstition, and its not going to effect admissions 🙂 keep us posted babe.

Is anyone else having problems getting through to Touro? The phone rings and rings and never gets to the point where you can dial the 2003 extension. Are there any other numbers to call?

Well, this could/shoudl be the day... right? I wish you all good luck.

Hey all... I interviewed on 3/6. I haven't heard a decision yet, but...is anyone concerned about the fact that the school isn't even finished yet??? i know everyone has their personal reasons for choosing NY but that fact worries me, a lot. I am also concerned about the fact that there is no cafeteria, no gym on campus, no coffee shop or alike, no established student organizations...can anyone make me feel better? i am a New Yorker at heart. I lived in NY for a few years and moved back to FL (home base) I feel like I left my heart in NY. I really want to work in underserved urban areas, but I am worried about so much. HELP!

Welp, I just got off the phone with Touro's phone/tech support. Apparently there was a flood on the 9th floor of the building where the school is and it caused alot of water damage. One of the casualties is the phone system. I am not sure if it will cause any delays with adcom meetings as well.

Good luck all!
