TOUROCOM NY Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This is how it looked...

"Dear Applicant,

Please be advised that we have received your Supplemental Application and fee.
Once your application is deemed ‘complete’ a notification via email with an invitation to join our Faculty and Staff for an interview at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine will be sent.
In addition, should your file be ‘incomplete’, a notice requesting all outstanding documents will be furnished. "

Going off last year's thread...most people got their official invites a week or two after getting this "Supplemental Received..." Email

mine is like "The Admissions Department will review your file and if the submitted documents are deemed ‘complete’ the Admissions Committee will make a selection as to the candidates that will be invited to interview. "

so I am not guaranteed an interview right? :(

I received your the email that you quoted. Who knows what they are doing this year. I'm sure there will be a lot more applicants and less wait list movement as the school is more established.

I think they started changing the email wording when they started getting bombarded with emails and phone calls asking where the interview invites were... lol I got the first version of the email and emailed Mr. Sow to see what the deal with interviews was, and he told me the admissions committee reviews the secondaries before offering interviews... I'm assuming they have an increased number of applications this yr, so stuff is changing :( I'm still waiting for an invite.

Really? I hope they are still going with the secondary = interview, but I still haven't gotten mine yet so I am getting a bit depressed now.

It's still early. I think they are just being a little more meticulous about the order of the people they invite. It's not simply the timing of which the secondary was received. Also with the quick decision turnaround after the interview and the deposit being required 2 weeks later, they'll always have a good idea of how many spots they have left.

LesBois88, you are awesome. I've been waiting and looking for this list for awhile.

its been about 3 weeks since i sent in my secondary and LOR's but i havent received any emails what so ever. i called Issa and he said my status is complete is currently under review....is anybody in the same boat as me?

Yep, yep, and yep.

I hope so too considering the $200 deposit that we all thought we were putting down b/c secondary equaled an interview. Still waiting on mine :(

For those of you with an interview when was your Primary complete? Maybe they are also going by that date? My primary wasn't complete until early/mid August.

I will just wait patiently b/c it seems like they only sent a fraction of the interviews out and prob will send more once those interviews take place.

I don't think interviews were given in the order of completion date. I do agree with you that most people "assumed they would be interviewed" so they paid the $200.00 fee. I have a feeling that the school probably had a drastic increase in the number of applicants and that will probably change the admission process. I don't know how they could possibly interview everyone with a 3.0/24 (or so that's what we thought the cut off was last year.)

Well, to be fair, the school hasn't cashed my check yet, despite offering an interview. Maybe yours hasn't been cashed yet either. Perhaps, they will eventually only cash the checks from people offered interviews.

I don't think it's as simple as having a 3.0/24 and you get the secondary/interview. I'm not gonna post my stats, but I got an interview (you can message me if you really want to know my stats) I really believe they look at each primary and secondary application thoroughly.

That was just the "rumour" from last years thread. Apparently that was an answer someone got when they called.

I'm all for "more than stats" applicant, because my mcat wasn't the greatest, but I feel like my life experiences "should" make up for it. You never know what schools are actually looking for.

Congratulations on your interview! I did like the school when I was there last year.

Can somebody share this year's secondary prompts?I have scanned this board and all I could fined were last year's.Are they the same this year? Please help.

Pretty sure it's the same as last years.

Please discuss how your background, experience or academic program has prepared you for meeting the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Mission, Goals, or Objectives. Limit your essay to 2 pages. Consider addressing a few areas: Why Osteopathic Medicine? Why Harlem? Have you been exposed to a diverse environment? How did you contribute? How have your academic background and personal experiences prepared you for medical school? How were you influenced by a shadowing experience?

Hi everyone,

I have a question on the course requirements. It says we need six semester hours of behavioral sciences: psychology, sociology, anthropology, or ethnic studies. I don't have any of these requirements, and I called the school and spoke with some people, and they all said that I would need these courses in order to matriculate. I already graduated and was not planning on taking any more courses, so I thought that I just won't go to Touro. However, I did get a secondary from them, and from what I see on this thread secondary=interview invite. So my questions are A) Are they really strict on the behavioral science requirement or can I replace it with something else, like political science? And B) Since I got the secondary from them, does it mean that they approve of my pre-reqs, and I won't need behavioral science?

Thanks for your help.

I doubt it. Many schools will interview you without having all the requirements complete, but will expect you to have it done prior to matriculation.

They let me (3 cycles ago) use my political science major to fulfill that. They probably still will. But when i got accepted I was told I needed to go and fulfill that requirement. I called up and they went "oh. thats silly. lets clear you for that."

Though, as they say in ads for an attorney: "your outcomes may vary. One outcome is not a guarantee of future outcomes."

So it seems like nobody really knows who gets the interviews? Way earlier in this thread someone posted that they called admissions and was told that secondary=interview. But maybe that's changing?

It's strange that some people received confirmation emails while others didn't. Sigh.

Does this school offers a fee waiver if I am granted AACOMAS Fee Waiver?

I just got an e-mail from them today saying they had my secondary but couldn't find my LOR even though my pre-health committee sent it out over 2 months ago.. I guess this is a good thing? I figure they're at least glancing through my application right? :xf:

fyi, i have an interview scheduled for oct 25. i'll likely be withdrawing my app in the next day or two, so hopefully one of you will be able to get this spot. best of luck to you all

They wouldn't change admissions policy in the middle of a cycle like that...that is just begging for trouble. I know they are really really disorganized this year because of the change of admissions directors (which is sad because last year when I went through the whole process, the school was the most smooth sailing and organized/transparent of any of the schools I applied to). That being said, all you can do is stay on top of your application, and stay in touch with the admissions office.

It's a shame how disorganized this whole admissions department seems to be. You call and they tell you they are still reviewing your application. You call again three weeks later and get the same answer. They send out emails without headers and subjects, people do not receive complete emails, and even those who have received an interview are still receiving emails asking to send in a secondary. Seems like a lot of nonsense for dishing out $200.

Does anyone know students can choose where they want to do their 3rd year rotations? Like out of state?

so i called them a couple of days ago and asked about my status. he says its complete and being reviewed. then I asked if he knew about how long the reviewing process takes and he said that its up to the admissions committee to determine whether or not I'd get an interview invite. So i guess they changed the secondary = interview, which is a bummer because thats $200 possibly down the drain.

it's done by a lottery system. when your number is called you go up and choose from whatever is leftover at that time. The NY hospitals may be filled and you may end up having to go to NJ. It sucks if you want to stay in NY but 5 of the hospitals in NJ are close to the city and people just commute from the city.

The upstate NY rotations sites are not in the lottery, people go there voluntarily.

How long did it take to get the interview date after you received the e-mail saying your supp/supp fee was received and they will follow up with an interview invitation?

I have the same question. TouroCOm NY received the primary on 09/20/2011. How many days after submitting your primary did you receive your secondary?

Wow, that sucks. I guess they are more selective now that they are fully accredited? There goes my guaranteed interview :(

They received my primary on 8/4/11 and sent me a secondary on 8/22/11.

Anyone know about the parking situation? I am thinking about getting a hotel outside of the city (they seem to be cleaner and cheaper) and then driving into the city the morning of the interview.

Curious about this too.

Parking is pretty rough anywhere in Manhattan...I'd avoid it.

I'm staying near LaGuardia. It's lot cheaper (unless you are adventurous and stay at a hostel), and I am planning to just take a cab to the school. Other times, when I'm out of my interview suit, I can take M-60 from LaGuardia. So in the long run, I will be saving a lot of money.
I'm paying $130/night and it's better than paying $200+ in manhattan. Metro is cheap and cab ride is ~$30 one day.
Like I said, I still save

Parking is rough but there are plenty of parking garages near the school if you are willing to pay the money. There is one like 3 blocks away that lets you park your car there for the day for $13-15. Not too bad, but you may have to pay toll to get into the city depending on what you take. If you are from out of state - driving in the city may be a bit rough/difficult/heart racing for you.

Yeah, I'm doing the same. Hotel near LaGuardia and taking a cab.

I would not do this. Unless you are comfortable driving in NY (read: unless you're from NY, or have driven in big cities before, you will not be), you're going to unnecessarily be stressing yourself out. Not to mention parking in manhattan's VERY costly. It might break even and save you a lot of stress to book a hotel in brooklyn and take the subway to the school. Just my two cents as a NJ resident and a regular NYC-attendee

(I say brooklyn, but there's also good deals on midtown hotels...scrounge around for deals online. I just crashed in NY a week ago at a hotel on 46th and I spend $139. Used expedia!)

Not sure if you guys got the email for parking options, I got it about a week after the interview invite. I haven't really made sense of it because I'm getting dropped off so parkings not an issue, but hopefully this may help:

I took everyone's advice and booked at the LaGuardia Airport Hotel for my october 5th interview. If anyone who is staying there/near there wants to split a cab that morning you can pm me.

Have you guys been sending in your LOR before receiving the secondary? My primary was just released about 2 weeks ago, but knowing how long TouroCOM takes to send the secondary, I'd like to get a head start...thoughts?
Also, I'm having a helluva time getting a hold of anyone in admissions - I'm constantly calling, but no luck...does anyone know of some secret number/extension that gets you a live person? Any advice would be oh so appreciated!

They probably are closed for jewish holidays.

I have the same question. TouroCOm NY received the primary on 09/20/2011. How many days after submitting your primary did you receive your secondary?

Primary verified mid August, secondary invite 8/22nd, submitted9/12
Interview invite 9/22
Good luck everyone!

For the current students or anyone familiar with the city...
I have a question about the transportation.
Now, I have an option of getting off at either Port Authority or Penn Station...I would assume Port Authority would be closer from the school?
If so, is it a walking distance? I'm not so used to riding subways at nyc...
Any input would be appreciated!

Is it just me or does it seem like not many interview invites have gone out? My secondary was complete the first week of September. I have been accepted to LECOM and RVU but I still really am interested in this school. Is it time to give up??

I think things changed quite a bit this year. Last I year I got the interview invite within a week of being complete. I am in the same boat as you now.

you can get off at port authority and take the A train uptown (towards 207 street) to 125 street. from there walk 4 blocks to touro.

Just curious, any reason you prefer touro over lecom? Erie campus i presume?
