facility is old, block exams, nice surroudings (island), faculty arrogant, students nice, match list fairly strong but only ~100 out of 140 matched into something (allo & osteo), new program started eight years ago, only affliated with 3~4 hospitals in the bay area, mostly out of state rotations, anymore??

wow. this is a great example of misinformation on SDN.

facilities - they are brand new. lecture hall - less than 2 years old, anatomy lab -high tech air tunover system, computer lab - new, being updated. it would be are for the facilities not to be new. mare island buildings haven't been used for years. they had to be renovated or completely rebuilt prior to tucom moving in.

surroundings - nice island? this is probably the number one complaint about TUCOM. I wouldn't really call mare island nice.

arrogant faculty. this is embarassingly off. who wrote this? do you know a single TUCOM prof? have you taken a single TUCOM class? have you spoken with one TUCOM prof?

only 100 out of 140 matched? this is just straight up not true. 90% matched. TUCOM has one of the strongest match list of any osteopathic school. its why a lot of us go here, cause students in past have landed prestigious residencies.

only 3 hospital rotations in bay area. again, straight up NOT TRUE. I can think of 3 in east bay alone. there's over 10 in bay area, plus others elsewhere in california - Ukiah, Redding, San Bernadino, Bakersfield, etc.

be careful what you read.

I went there for the interview so I can say that the facility (IMO) seems really old except for the library. The main building looked new from the outside but inside, it's more or less set up (and felt) like a high school. The facility is surrounded by run down buildings with broken windows. Lighting around the campus is extremely poor. The surrounding area is pitch black at night.

Depends on what yardsticks you're using to measure. The campus is surrounded by historical buildings, which require many permits and special dispensations to change or restore. They're working on a building right next to the admissions building right now... but since it's been designated "historical" (as most of the original buildings are), it has been a long process.

I just went on a tour of the island this past weekend (not all of the island is accessable to civilians yet), run by one of the VP's of the school (and former Navy employee at Mare Island), I think it's beautiful. If you appreciate history and the grace of very old buildings, and have an imagination with an eye for the future, you'll like it. If you don't, you'll wont. Very simple.

For example, I saw the first military building built on the island, from 1857, with some really amazing masonry. The Mare Island Naval Shipyards cemetary, which (along with others) keeps 3 medal of honor winners (one from the Boxer Rebellion!), a senator, relatives of Francis Scott Key, and 6 Russian Sailors who died saving San Franciscans in the Financial District fire of 1863. I love stuff like that.

I got to see the memorial that honors every ship and submarine built at Mare Island... including the Robert E. Lee, the Saginaw, the Skate, and various very historical vessels. I saw the view from the top of the island, near the 11th hole of the golf course that borders the school's 40 acres of the island (in the photos attached, the school is behind and in the midst of the large stand of trees), and I watched part of the San Francisco yacht fleet returning home after a regatta sponsored by the Vallejo Yacht Club.

Are all old buildings beautiful? No. Is there a lot of work to be done, and a lot of work BEING done. Absolutely. The school isn't in charge of most of the island... the state of California is in charge of the historical bits, and much of it is being refurbished and sold for a LOT of money by a little (ha ha) developer called Lennar.

Do I really care what the place looks like, now that I attend? Not really, I've got better things to worry about. But then, I'd rather have an old station wagon that ran like a porsche, than a porsche that ran like an old station wagon. It's what's inside the school that counts.

A few interesting Photos (and a copy of an old photo) for you. The hospital is not used, but I like driving past it every day... it was used for filming Patch Adams.

oh i wish I went on that tour! every morning i drive to school and wonder, 'where are all these people going if they're aren't following me to 8 o' clock class?'
i must say though, i've been on the 11th hole many times =) and the view is gorgeous. a few of us go up to the course during lunch and hit balls, and after class fridays we can play a round for $20. any pre-osteo golfers out there, this place is a dream. who doesn't like to be able to do any outdoor activity you want to do year round? can only get that in cali.

You might wanna medicate that. It could get ugly as Block 2 approaches.

🙂

I'm glad that you can't quite tell 'what' I am. It's reassuring in a way. .
