Tufts c/o 2017 Applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello! Current Tufts students/past applicants: when did you first hear back about interview invites? Thanks!

First set of interview invites go out in December and those I think are typically for people with higher GPAs, GRE scores, etc. The rest of the invites go out early/mid January for early February interviews. I think you get both an email and a letter in the mail.

Hello! Current Tufts students/past applicants: when did you first hear back about interview invites? Thanks!

I see you're from NYC, but just wanted to let everyone know that they only extend early interview invites to OOS applicants. So if you're from MA and don't hear right away, don't panic!

Im not applying this year but have a question. Do all the prereqs have to be completed before application or can you finish them that spring?

I can't think of a school that they have to be done before the application. But I do know that some schools will only let you have a set # of prerequisite classes left to do in the spring before matriculation. Sorry this isn't very specific, I graduate in Dec so this doesn't apply to me, but I do remember reading it somewhere. I'm sure someone will have a better answer. 😀

Here is the tufts vet website: http://www.tufts.edu/vet/gateways/prospective_students.html

Under Pre-req's: DVM applicants must have completed the equivalent of at least three full undergraduate academic years at an accredited college or university and fulfilled 90 semester hours of course work before enrollment.

Candidates must successfully complete the following courses prior to enrolling at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine but not necessarily prior to applying to the school.

Courses can be found here: http://www.tufts.edu/vet/dvm/prerequisite_courses.html

It's not exactly clear how many can be left, but at least you can rest assured that you can finish some during spring!

why do they do that??

why do they do that??

They figure that IS students will go to their interviews no matter when they invite them. OOS students are more picky about where they interview, especially later in the application season (I know I was). If they really, really want to have someone attend their school, it makes more sense to hook them early before they start being more choosey.

Yeah I think you are probably right. Just sucks to wait that much longer as IS! Patience is truly a virtue...

Does anyone know how strict they are with the "approximately 750 words" limit on the personal statement essay? I really wanted to just use my VMCAS personal statement because I think it's strong but apparently the 5,000 character limit for VMCAS translates to 864 words. That's probably too many words, right?

I used my personal statement from VMCAS - but cut it down to be exactly 750 words. Word limits are there for a reason, I don't mess with them.

I think I recall someone last year asking them about this, and I think they said if it was slightly over, it was okay but I'm not sure over 100 words is considered slightly over.

Usually if there are word/character limits, I stick to them because I had a crazy professor once who either counted, or was amazingly good at eyeballing word counts and would take off points for going over.

Also, I'm pretty sure that's more words than I was allowed. I think it was a 500 word limit the two years I applied, so consider yourself lucky.

I do my best to stick with word limits too, I was just surprised by the use of "approximately." They also don't record your word count on the application like VMCAS does with characters. Thanks for the help! Now to decide what to cut out...

So far, I just put my vmcas ps down. It's like 800ish words. 860 or something like that once you include the prompt/question. If they don't like it, haters gonna hate. I might commit to cutting it down this weekend when I revisit my app after a month of negligence, but right now i'm leaving it. After all, Tufts is one of my top schools so I'll probably try to minimize any and all reasons for them to cut me early. I don't know where the 50 words I have to cut will come from though.

Hey all, I'm a current student at Tufts and I occasionally help out at admissions (tours, q&a's). Just to answer your questions about the essay questions - they are not counting your words. At no point will someone on the Tufts Admissions committee stop reading your essay. Just get your essay to the point where it is concise, but if you feel like you are cutting out important information, then include what is necessary. That being said, you do not want to be memorable for being way too long or way too short! Just don't worry quite so much about the exact numbers, focus on what the essay says. Hope that relieves a few of the worries! 🙂 Feel free to post here on SDN or message me if you have any questions about Tufts - the clinics, the classes, life in North Grafton... I'm happy to try to answer some questions if I can!

👍 Yay! Thanks! I'm so happy you posted this! I plan on having lots of questions for you! How do you like the experience- classes, evens, North Grafton, etc? I would love to ask you more but I'm at work... Hopefully others will step in and be just as curious!

I was the one who called and asked about this. They said that it was more of a suggestion but not to go too crazy. Our essay was supposed to be 500 words and mine was 725 words (non-trad with lots to say...). No one said anything about it to me and I got in.

I am very nervous about this application because I am nowhere near done with it!
For the why apply to tufts question, my file reviewer (Ford) said that my answer was good last cycle. It was about the wildlife program, which is obviously huge at Tufts. However, I've changed my main interest to food animals and food safety now. Would it look bad if I mentioned in the essay that my initial attraction to Tufts has changed, but I'm still applying because of the amazing interactions I've had with Tufts students and faculty who also tell me great things about the education? Would it be okay to name drop the faculty? And the joint DVM-MPH program finishes more quickly than other schools. Those reasons seem a bit negative to me, but they are honest appeals. Good or bad to mention? Ambulatory program and other things dealing with farm animals are great too, but that is not especially unique for vet schools (or am I mistaken)?

Hey there,
Overall, Tufts is a really great place to do your veterinary training. Honestly, no matter where you go, vet school is going to be really challenging/wonderful/exhausting/exhilarating/frustrating/all of the above. 🙂 But when it comes down to it, we are following our dreams/goals and I can't imagine being at any other school. Overall the experience here is incredibly positive. The faculty/staff are very supportive, students help each other (share notes, study guides via facebook and Tusk), it doesn't feel competitive between the students, and there are so many available opportunities. If they don't have it available here, they are generally very good about helping you find a way to make it happen. I struggled in some classes first year, so last year, with the administration, we created a tutoring program. 🙂 They are very receptive to finding ways to make the school better.

I live in Grafton and do like it - it's a very beautiful, quiet town. *If you are more of a city person, it may not be a good fit, but if you like fields, woods and farms, it's a great place to live. *I really love hiking, the changing of the seasons and smaller towns, so Tufts environment/community really fits me well. We are very connected though so that if you want to escape, it's very easy to get to Worcester or Boston or even Providence. *Some students choose to live in Boston or suburbs halfway between so that they are more connected to city-activities or their spouses/significant others. However, so much of your time here is spent in classes/studying that this is not really an issue for most people. We find ways to have fun - the local pub has trivia night on Tuesdays, Worcester has a bunch of bars and restaurants, there are TONS of hiking trails, a movie theater is less than 10 minutes away, there are BBQs, weekly soccer games, students have parties at their houses (tonight there is a big costume party happening).... it's really what you make of it. Grafton in spring/summer is GORGEOUS so if you like to go for walks/hikes to take a break from studying, it's heaven!! *It's a nice environment to be in when studies get stressful. *One thing I'd say against Grafton is that if you are a foodie - finding really good food around here can be a challenge, but Boston has TONS so we try to make occasional weekend trips to spoil ourselves with better dining.

*In the end, it comes down to where you think you will be happiest for four years. *No matter where you go, you will get a great veterinary education. But if you are going to choose a vet school, Tufts is a great place to do your training!!

P.S. Sorry for the delayed reply and future delays.... we had a big exam this morning so I got a little behind on my e-mails. I will do my best to reply to the posts within a few days! 🙂

P.P.S. I have no idea why half my sentences have * in front of them. 🙂 Weird.

Sounds like a dream 😍

Thanks to Hurricane Sandy it looks like I'll need to finish this app by tomorrow (even though I should have had it finished weeks ago...opps) since I'll probably be losing power by Monday. Just a heads up to anyone on the East Coast...you might want to submit before it's too late! Knowing Tufts record though they may extend the deadline, but I don't want to chance it!

Half of my awards, activities, and organizational work is blank - guess I haven't done much with my life other than work. Oh well. 😎

I finally visited Tufts last week with an alumni and met up with a current resident to tour the school. LOVED IT. The ICU looks slamming busy, the area is beautiful on the Grafton side, but most importantly everyone looked so happy! It was one of the most relaxed and inviting environments I have been to in an academic setting. My friend introduced me to a number of professors, all of whom were incredably warm and welcoming (even though we came barging in unannounced). The students and staff I interacted with were jocular, engaged, and clearly at ease with one another. I was a little afraid that being ANOTHER applicant touring the facility (I mean, tromping through the treatment areas) would have annoyed someone, but, it really didn't... I was so impressed with the attitude and atmosphere at Tufts that it jettisoned to my #1 choice in schools. If they are a fraction as impressed with my application as I am with the school it will be enough for me. Oh! If you like Indian food and Thai there is actually a lot of good places to eat in the surrounding area. 👍👍👍👍👍

one question!
For the short answer, some of them mention that the size of the file should be up to 2MB. how many words are included in the 2MB? because some short answer prompts mention that the limits are 750, or 500 words. what about the ones that don't mention the word limit?
i'm confused..
thanks!

Are there really only 6 places for your veterinary and animal experiences? Is there anyway to add more?

Hello Tufts student (and anyone else that my be able to answer). I am finding all sorts of great resources on the Tufts website about topics I'm interested in from different schools and programs (like Fletcher and Friedman Schools at Tufts). Is it correct to say that one of the appealing aspects of Tufts is the access to resources and professors with specialties from other parts of the Tufts University? Or do DVM or DVM/MPH students not really get to have experiences and take advantage of the opportunities at the other graduate institutes associated with Tufts? I like the huge, diverse community aspect, but I'm not sure if that will be a realistic experience. It it can happen, that's an aspect I'd like to mention in the WHY APPLY TO TUFTS application essay!
Thanks for your help!

Would I be able to study nutrition at the Friedman School, for instance?

Just submitted and it feels so good! Made myself finish everything today before Sandy hits. 🙄

I just got an email from Tufts...they're extending the deadline until Monday November 5th at 9am!!

I know I got the email about the extended deadline too! Thank god. lol Also, does anyone know if you can submit the application before all of your evaluators submit their letters like VMCAS or do you have to wait?

The 2MB restriction is a file-size restriction. A 2MB txt file will contain more words than you will ever write. The Complete Works of Shakespeare, for instance, will fit in a 5.5MB txt file. Keep your answers to less than half of Shakespeare's catalog and you're fine.

If you save your answers as a Microsoft Word file, it will be slightly larger, but it still won't come close to 2MB.

Good luck!

Hey there, so I was just answering a similar question so thought I would include what I said to them as well. I'm not 100% sure I can fully answer your question but in terms of collaboration with the other Tufts schools - our combined/dual degree program students take classes both at the vet school in Grafton and at the Boston campuses (ie DVM/MPH, DVM/MS students). The students from Boston who are in the Public Health program join us at the vet school for a couple of lectures/classes each year (such as the Ethics in Veterinary Medicine course). The students who are solely in the DVM program in Grafton generally only have classes in Grafton at the vet school..... sorry if that's confusing. But basically, there is some collaboration between the schools but as a DVM-only student, the classes are 99% at Grafton. We do have access to some of the facilities on the main campus (libraries, dental care through the Tufts school of dentistry). We also have some annual events that include all the medical campus (such as an annual medical school(s) dance). I am a DVM-only student so my knowledge of the combined/dual degree programs is limited. You might consider calling the admissions office to ask about the collaboration between campuses in terms of the combined programs - the admission staff are SUPER nice and always happy to answer questions or help you find the answer. Hope this is at least somewhat helpful! 🙂

My vet elor writer still hasn't submitted his reference yet... My other evaluators submitted when they submitted my vmcas... Why do you have to be so complicated? Just copy/paste. 😡

I really need to sit down and finish my app.. whine whine I'm sick whine. Okay, I'm done.

Woke up to find that my last elor was finished! It's going to be a great day!

Just submitted. I think I am going to barf.....ugh....

Still writing essays. Fie you word limits! Due 9 am Monday, huh? MA time, I assume. :/

Anyone else probably submitting Sunday night/right before it's due or am I alone? I wonder how badly it looks when an app is submitted last minute.

In the additional explanation section, I explain poor transcript marks. I have a short paragraph version (identifying the general common theme for problems and noting how they were addressed) and a more detailed four paragraph version (with explanation for what was wrong, why, what I learned, and how I changed). Does anyone know if Tufts is the kind of school that appreciates details or brevity? They are both succinct.

Thanks!

I think, and this is my opinion, that they would like for you to be clear and concise. They have to read a lot of essays/short answers and so they would probably appreciate something that is descriptive, but to the point. That being said there is a word limit... Also feel free to call my advice rubbish too. Good luck everyone!

Why is it so hard to upload files!? It keeps showing "We are currently processing your document. Thank you for your patience." but not really doing anything..

Sitting in Panera, using hurricane relief free wifi, and finally submitted this application! Last one...now the true waiting begins. Yikes. 😛

FWIW, the first time I applied, I submitted my app the night before it was due as I was getting ready to go out for Halloween. Got interviewed and wait listed. Time of submission doesn't have an impact like it does in med school applications.

As for details or brevity, I'm not really sure. I know they definitely want to hear explanations for things though. I ended up asking if they preferred explanations for things because I always worried about sounding like I was making excuses. I was told that as long as you don't come off that way, it is acceptable but it obviously depends on each situation whether it plays a huge role into your admissions decision.

Personally, I agree that you should try to make your point quickly and clearly since they do have a lot of essays to read through.

I'm submitting tonight. I opened it on the first day, and utilized every bit of the extension. There was a good period of a few weeks after submitting vmcas where I couldn't even touch my tufts app. I'd open it, sigh, and log out. I still have 200 characters to add to my dinner essay... I might just leave it. Since its due in 12 hours, I'll just come out and say that I'm writing a clever essay of what will happen during my dinner with Leonardo da Vinci. Hopefully they like a sense of humor 🙄

ETA: Just submitted!!! 9:15pm Central time. WOWZA.
