I can imagine how frustrated you feel....I've gone through the whole range of emotions: angry, sad, frustrated, etc....It's not a rejection, at least! After I got my UCSF rejection I felt the same thing, "Why the heck did you send me a secondary, anyway?!"

Look on the positive side...you have 2 interview invites...that's gotta mean something!!🙂
 
Wassup guys, I am new to the boards. I see there is a strong California contingent here. Anyway, I am UCLA undergrad going through this crapfest known as applying to med school. Here is what I have...

UCLA: Nothing after primary (What is up with my school? So many people have heard nothing)
UC Davis: No secondary Reject (I still don't understand why I got no secondary)
UC Irvine: Just checked website, Hold for interview
UCSF: I had a crazy thought that my AMCAS would be put in the "Interview file" on accident. It didn't happen. No Secondary Reject

Here is the weird thing. Today, I just got invited for an interview from USC. Although not a UC and a hated rival school, it is still in California. Anyone else here from them?

Masalaman, hey dude, I applied to USC too. Congrats on the invite. Yeah, true, they're our major rival and it sucked getting spanked by them again on Sat., but I wouldn't mind going to USC Med. School. I really want to stay in CA. I haven't heard anything back from them, yet, but I was kinda slow getting my secondary in so I guess it'll be awhile.

UCI: the infamous "on hold"
UCSF: pre-secondary rejection
UCD: secondary but no interview invite
UCSD: interview 11/18

Anyone receive an interview invite from davis. It seems like they are very selective or just slow these days?

Can't remember how recently i gave an update so here goes...

UCLA: havent heard from them since i turned in secondary
UCI: interviewed 11/25
UCSF: post-secondary hold
UCD: post-secondary rejection
UCSD: interviewed 10/21, placed in acceptable pool a few days ago
 
hey bounty, how did you find out you are on hold at ucsf? they have been taking their time with my secondary so i would assume i am on hold too but they haven't said anything. thanks.
 
I'm starting to get real worried here. I sent a letter to UCLA stating that I would attend their school over any others shortly after my secondary (early Oct). To date, I have yet to hear from any of my other apps & I am on hold at UCI and UCSD. Do you think UCLA would share my letter of intent with the other schools? Notifying them that I would rather attend UCLA?

status so far:
UCSF = no response after primary
UCLA = no repsonse after sec.
UCSD = hold for interview
UCI = hold for interview
USC = no response after sec.

All submited in Oct. Getting so sick of this waiting game. Looking to take the GREs already 🙂 Got the Kaplan book, and I'm ready to go.

they sent me a letter. I actually havent read it yet b.c it's at my mom's house but it said something like if i am interviewed, it won't be until april. Doesn't sound too hopeful. 🙁
 
here's my update:
ucla--never heard anything after primary
uci--interviewed 11/14
ucsd--hold for possible interview(got the email)
ucsf--on hold for possible interview (same as bounty...got the same letter)
ucd--haven't heard a thing since my 2ndary was complete in oct.

i have given up on la if they haven't given a 2ndary by now...
 
here's my scoop (aug mcater):

SF: complete end of Aug, waiting
Davis: complete early Sept, waiting
LA: complete mid Sept, interview mid-Dec
SD: complete early Aug, hold for interview
Irvine: nada

Don't lose all hope if you haven't received a sec--they send them until Feb.
 
so i found out one of the reason's my ucsf (my absolute dream school) application has gone nowhere. it seems my letters of rec never arrived, and i find this out today, over a month after my secondary application was considered complete on the website. let this be a lesson to not always trust the status check.
 
Gogiants, that sucks, sorry to hear that. Any chance you can get your recommenders to fax the letters?
 
my letters actually go through a mailing service my old school has so its really their fault since they were supposed to send it out. ucsf gave me a new deadline though and as i'm heading down to my old school to interview this weekend i'll just show up and demand they send out those letters immediately. i hope it doesn't affect my chances too much though.
 
Gogiants, good to hear that you got a new deadline. Hopefully, everything works out for ya. 😀 I'm sure schools are used to this kind of thing happening. My friend goes to UCD and had the same type of thing happen to her. She had to pay like $200 bucks for this letter service, so you'd expect them to get things done on time.

UCI = interviewed mid november - file completed 9/11
UCD = haven't heard back after secondary file completed 9/25
UCSD = haven't heard back after secondary - file completed 10/9
UCSF = rejected post-secondary (no interview)


has anyone heard back from UC Irvine after their interviews? when i was there (i think 11/14), they said they'd be reviewing applicants soon....but seems like no one's heard from them yet..

just wondering about davis....i read on their website that they usually let you know after 6 weeks of submitting the 2ndary...is that true b/c for me it has been more than 6 weeks? has anyone received a rejection after 2ndary or are they more like uci and ucsd where they just kind of put you on hold...just wondering if anyone has heard from them.

How did they let you know about the secondary? By email or snail mail?
 
dpy, i think uci just started notifying post interview. i interviewed on 10/31 (apparently first day) and i got a call the day before thanksgiving offering me an acceptance. =) good luck!

ucla: nothing pre-secondary
uci: acceptance
ucsf: interviewed
ucd: nothing post-secondary
ucsd: hold for interview
 
UC Davis: Rejected
UCSF: Rejected
UCSD: Hold for interview
UCLA: No word post-secondary
UCI: Interviewed.

Basically, all I have to say is that the UC's can suck my nuts.

Hey folks,

Just wanted to add my status for all the UCs:

UCSF - rejected post-secondary
UCDavis - no response post-secondary
UCLA - no response post-secondary from my alma mater (damn, wish they wouldn't make it so agonizing slow (a quick and painless death will suffice)
UCI - on hold
UCSD - accepted

Looks like most of the UC's have started sending out pre/post 2ndary rejections. So for those of us waiting 2-3 months post-2ndary now to hear from certain UC's, i'm starting to think the following:

1) hopeful--our apps are actually "in review" & being considered 🙂
2) hopeful--our apps are "lost" in the pile & will surface @ some point 😕
3) not so hopeful--officially placed on hold in limboland til march/april 😡
4) dismal--we've already been thrown into the reject pile, but they're too swamped to send out the rejection letter. 🙁 I'd rather get the slap early on rather than hoping for months for nothing

The only good thing @ the excruciating pace of the UC's is that their classes are not filling up as quickly compared to other schools (a plus for us aug mcaters).

Nefertari-- The UC's SUCK!! They make the med school app process 10 times more frustrating. 😡 I'm hopeful for #1 on your list, but I'm starting to feel like #4 is going to happen. 🙁

UCD - rejected 12/04 via e-mail (app complete 9/26)

...hoping davis & sf won't change to post-secondary rejections 🙁 app has been complete at sf late september (except for august mcat scores). app was recently completed at davis.
 
I'm assuming most of you have stellar stats based on the number of secondaries you've gotten. Is there anyone out there who is an August MCAT'er with stats approximating mine (11/9/10/R 3.64 gpa) who's heard back from more than UCI for a secondary? I'm particularly interested in Davis and UCLA. Thanks!
 
my stats are similar to your's (mcat a little lower, gpa a little higher). i'm a non-trad, though, so i'm sure my life experiences and graduate degree are making me stand out which is why i'm getting secondaries. i think it's extremely difficult to get any attention from uc's if you are a typical premed with decent stats. i just stayed with a student host at nymc, and she told me she didn't get secondaries from any of the uc's.

ok, i'm editing this now b/c i just looked you up and see that you are a non-trad as well. i really don't know what to say other than this whole process is impossible to figure out. perhaps undergrad/grad school prestige played a role in my getting secondaries. not like it matters anyway as all i'm doing is wasting time and money filling them out and then getting put on hold 😛
 
Lola-- don't sell yourself short. Haven't you gotten interviews already? I think I read that earlier. Maybe taking the MCAT in August is working against me a bit. I'm still thrilled I got a secondary from UC Irvine, so it isn't all bad. And it's nice to hear my stats aren't entirely doing me in, because I absolutely refuse to take the MCAT again.
 
Oh-- I should have added that while I'm a non-trad, my post-undergrad "career" (secretary) isn't really a stand out like a grad degree.

pocwana, sorry to hear your news @ Davis (gosh, by email? they need to be more courteous). Yup, the regional theme is for the most part true w/ me too (esp. w/ the difficulty i've had trying to schedule my ucla interview). Now I realize that the slowness is because maybe the UC's are cosmically trying to predict the likelihood that a NoCal or SoCal app would choose to go to the other end of the state. I have heard that unless you are some godly applicant, no more than 2 UC's (usu. only one) will offer you an acceptance, which i think is fair to everybody applying.

Too bad we don't have a match program, like Texas does, that would allow us to designate our preferences. That way, the UC wouldn't have to spend all this time trying to second guess our intentions.
 
Lola, you are actually doing great for an aug mcater! Haven't you been offer 2 or 3 interviews already? It's nice to see that they're giving us non-trads a chance.
 
e-mail rejections are cruel 🙁 i can't believe davis doesn't have the courtesy to send a letter.

yes, i have received 2 interview invites and consider myself very lucky. i would kill for an early acceptance to one of those places just to take a little bit of pressure off. i guess that's asking a bit much, though 🙂

having a match program like texas would be awesome and would be more likely to ensure that the best candidates got in. it seems like many top students could easily end up shafted by the uc's. e.g. uci thinking a candidate's too good and wouldn't want to go there, ucsf thinking they're not good enough but thinking they will be interviewed by uci so rejecting them, etc..., then no one interviewing them. maybe that doesn't happen, but it seems like the uc's are so screwey that it's very conceivable.

i wonder if there is any truth to schools interviewing applicants in their region. if so, i have no idea how they would look at me. i'm from central cali (more southern than northern) but now live in sf. hmm... it's all speculation really 🙁

I hope me posting this does not jinx my chances at getting in a UC school. Karma always works against me, and I am hoping it doesn't in this case. Guess I'll just sit back with a cold Sierra Nevada and little somethin somethin to relax the mind... 😎

Hey pocwana, just got the email from davis too...a FAT rejection, there goes my hope of staying in northern california. To everyone waiting on ucla, they are reviewing applications right now, i just checked my status page and got an interview invite. So i guess that balances everything out today. sorry to hear about your troubles with davis. this whole process is so tough for us californians. at my nymc interview i'd say 11 or so out of 15 people were from california. at least someone wants us...

UCLA: interviewed on 11/15
UCI: interviewed on 11/14
UCSD: on hold since August
UCSF: rejected pre-secondary

c'mon so cal, i wanna stay in cali!
 
thanks to everyone for the condolences and mine go out as well to all us recipients of the harsh tactless davis method of rejection. fortunately, i do know that i'm going somewhere next fall, be it a uc or (more likely, it seems) not. reading all of the waitlist threads from last app season and ones starting up this season i feel for everyone out there. just don't give up hope! there are still plenty of seats to fill. i just wish everyone didn't go so slowly. i was at ucla's king/drew hospital the other day bringing in a patient and wanted to go up to the chief resident and say, hey, let me in. i wanna go to school here. i'm sure he would have just laughed...
 
here's a different perspective:

personally, i'd like to get rejections by email. It's quick, to the point, and would save me the agony of having to walk in the frigid cold a couple of times each day to my p.o. box to get my mail, or compulsively logging into application status pages to see if there's been any updates if i got a secondary of if i were lucky enough to get an interview at one of the uc's.

True, it's quick, but unlike being shot in the head, it's still hurts like hell. 😀
Also, if you receive a generic email not personally addressed like in a snail mail letter, wouldn't you wonder if maybe you got stuck on the wrong email list? 😕
