I submitted my AMCAS primary in late August as a California resident. Davis is one of my top picks and is close to my family. I've received secondaries from every place I've applied, even places that offer secondaries to only 30% of applicants. I am fairly competitive (33, 3.6) with strong activities/research. I interviewed at Dartmouth MD/PHD.
But Davis rejected me pre-secondary on December 10th. When I called Davis, they said that I turned my primary app in too late and that I wasn't in the top 3k to get secondaries out of 5k applications. They said they were a lot more selective in their December readings because they already gave out too many secondaries. I don't feel like I got a fair shake; I don't expect to get in but my application is playing in the top 50% everywhere else. They don't offer an official appeal process. Any thoughts?
Was a 9/19/07 confirmed AMCAS application really the bottom of their stack?
Sorry to hear about that. Don't worry, my AMCAS was verified in JUNE and I was rejected pre-secondary from UCSD, which is my alma mater, yet I've been accepted at 2 schools, one of which is a UC. I say this because I've learned that this process does not make any clear sense. People think good scores and ECs should give you a fair shot at great schools, which in a perfect world, they would, but with the # of applicants, it is not that way. I know you can't help but take it personally, which I did too, but it obviously has nothing to do with the quality of your application, which seems to be great.
Also, I have found that applying early, in my opinion, is the #1 most important thing in this process. Regardless of your scores, it is the difference between standing out among 200-300 applications (with tons of available spots for secondaries/interviews/acceptance) and standing out among 3,000-6,000 applications (with much fewer available spots for S/I/A). That makes a huge difference, and it sounds like this is what happened to you.
Don't get your hopes down, and just be thankful for your other interviews, which are also at really great schools! Good luck with the rest of the process!
