UCLA and Charles Drew

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They have completely separate admissions committees. During the first two years, the Geffen students and Drew students are virtually the same --- they attend the same lectures/labs/small group sessions. When rotations start in third year, the Drew students do all of their rotations at Drew (a hospital for the underserved) while the Geffen students do rotations at many hospitals in LA (Harbor, UCLA, Cedars, Olive View, Drew, etc.).

What's the different between UCLA School of Medicine and Charles Drew? Do they have separate lectures for their student?

Drew = stigma in the medical community

very bad hospital...close to losing accreditation

The hospital has stigma, yes, but Drew students don't. They still have to pass the same exams as Geffen students and their diploma is from UCLA.

If the hospital were to lose it's accreditation or shut down, the Drew students would complete their rotations at another UCLA-affiliated hospital for the underserved. They're working very hard to fix the hospital, though.

all this may be true...but tell that to the rest of the medical academic world

uclastudent, i understand what you are saying. and i appreciate the drew students for taking on the mission of reaching out to the underserved. i think drew has a "good" stigma in that regard. 🙂

no not really!!! Let's be serious...I am not saying that these students will not be qualified...I am just saying that access to specific residency programs will be limited b/c of the stigma associated with the affiliated hospital.

OK. Let's be serious. I am looking at the matchlists for the past five years, and Drew people have nothing to worry about.

just to let some people who do not have their homework done know, Drew was accredited fully this year and all their residency programs are running fine (except surgery which will be under review soon). i am currently a Drew/UCLA student and i did not even put a second thought into accepting their offer. i think what is important is the mission of the school. we need more schools whose goal is to serve the underserved. and IF Drew is not able to give their students clinics to rotate through (which is HIGHLY unlikely), they put us through other UCLA affiliated hospitals. don't be too quick to judge unless you've been through it yourself.
