for those entering UCSF in the fall, have you guys gotten anything yet? i know i'm being a bit neurotic and a worry wart, but after the last update e-mail, i haven't heard back from them at all.

i'm particularly curious to see if anyone heard back from the housing yet, and if they got their mailed info to activate their student acccount. have a great summer everyone!

i called and they said they will start mailing housing lottery #'s out next week- there's no guarantee that everyone who applied will get housing 👎

anyone going to camping trip this sept?

I also talked to the financial aid dept yesterday and a rep from that dept, I have been emailing with over the last two months, told me they should be sending financial aid info in the coming weeks as well.

I've just been trying to schedule my immunizations and get that going. I need to at least start my hep B cycle and TB cycle ASAP, the others I have completed. I was also suprised when I was told by fin aid that unsub staff loans are 22,000, I was told they were 10,000 (must be undergrad). Anyways, i am a non-resident, so I am not looking forward to my debt after year one, just taking a hit!

UCDBio, I'm going to the camping trip, talked to neonam last week about it...going to be a good experience I am sure.

Although I've opted not to go to UCSF, I did receive a housing contract about 2-3 weeks ago. Alicia from Housing called me and said my name was drawn out of the lottery, one of those nice apts on 3rd street (just north of SF campus) / shared room / shared bath for a steal, about 380/month.

I'm not looking forward to those antibody titers/immunizations though. Not only are those titers gonna cost me out of pocket, but I hate the sight of my own blood. Good luck to all you UCSF peeps!

did anyone else hear from housing? what about after you turned in your deposit and statment of legal residence...anyone get anything back from the office of registrar?

ummm.... what camping trip? sorry, not quite with it... is this open to everyone?

oneday- yea, i gotta get my 2-step TB also and pull my immun record info together.

as for everything else, i haven't heard back from anyone yet, so i'm just waiting =). the second i get something, i'll let you guys know!

I know my check posted, so I know they have that and I received my denial of residence status...so I have to wait a year. Anyways, to answer your question, I did receive info!

The camping trip is like a pre-orientation orientation where students are invited to go out with current students (from what Ihave been told) and has been a good time in the past. As I only know a few people, I think this would be a good way to get to know people for sure. And that's stating the obvious.

Oneday, there are around 50 orientation counselors, 50% P2's and 50% P3's, so, yeah, there are plenty of people to keep you entertained during the camping trip. A little bit of advice, my padwan, for the camping trip. 1) Bring you our own dinner and snacks cuz the selections are very limited. 2) If you can, don't plan on staying overnight. There is not much to do the following morning and sleeping on the hard ground is not so fun, especially if you have a rowdy group of people (we upperclassmen) keeping you up into the wee hours of the morning. I think a lot of people are thinking of bailing after the evening is over. 3) Bring a camera and have fun!

sorry to be such a goober,... but where is this info posted? can someone link me or direct me? i would to go check it out (and most likely bail before the night ends,... hehehe, i like eating a lot and i don't like cold hard grounds usually). thanks for the insider info neonam!

Aww, Obiwan, I definitely will heed your advice. So is it a whole day affair, into the evening, and that's it? Not a weekend affair?

So if we do come back in the evening, where's the party at?

Looking forward to it.

Haha, I got blasted by one of my bros, an obvious orientation counselor, last night for suggesting that you P1's go home early. So to be fair, the organizers this year will try to make it extra special--lunch, dinner, and then there is something to do the following day. So please, please stay or else I'm gonna get an earful from my classmates for corrupting your innocent minds. So the camping trip is on Thursday and you return on Friday. Saturday and Sunday are when the City Tours kick off--Chinatown, NorthBeach, clubbing, Golden Gate Park, you name it, there will probably be a tour. Oh yeah, Oneday, try to get UCSFpharmgirl's private tour, only four P1's allowed, and she will drive you around the city, hahaha, how cool is that?

Then I'll stay to save your a$$! City tour definitely will be nice, I'm down for it, and I'll contact Mayra, I'm sure she'll let me into her group. Does she have a choice? How did exams ago?

Neonam....you're going to get into trouble for suggesting the 1st years to leave early. Hey Oneday, just to let you know I left the camping trip early...I didn't want to spend the night. And now that i'm a Orientation Counselor i'm not setting a good example...since I would be leaving again on Thursday Night. What's the purpose in staying...when the following morning your just packing and getting ready to go back to SF. I would rather sleep in my comfortable bed and waking up refreshed instead of being cramped in a tent with 4 other people.

Just to let you know the camping trip is a lot of fun...like neonam mentioned. As for food...make sure you get something to eat before you head to the camping trip. Last year a lot of us stopped at "In & Out" before we had to be at the camp grounds. I'm so happy i'll see you there. Hey I might pick on you during the night festivities. Do you have a good voice???

For any of you who are interested in during a City tour...I would highly suggest you sign up for mine. As Neonam mentioned. I'll be giving a tour for 4 lucky people. I'll be driving you to places such as 1) Twin Peaks 2) Coit Tower 3) Golden Gate Bridge 4) Palace of Fine Art 5) Drive down Lombard Street 6) Maybe drive to the Ocean and 7) Finally find a place to eat such as in China Town or somewhere Downtown. I just thought for some of you who don't know the area...& won't be bringing your car....this would be the perfect opportunity to explore the city. If any of you are interested please let me know. And Neonam...you can't come...you're not a 1st year 🙂.....just messing with you. If more than 4 people sign up....maybe you could help me with this tour...what do you think??

Well I hope everyone is having a good summer. If anyone is coming to SF early...send me an e-mail and maybe we can hang out or something. bye-bye

by the way, neonam, UCSFpharmgirl8, and I are PDC brothers. i strongly encourage you guys to join us this year. it's gonna be fun!!!

hey UCSFpharmgirl8, save me a seat. i'll join you.

ahem...
Enough of this PDC talk. By the way, I will also be a orientation counselor, and I WILL be staying the night at the camping trip. Perhaps this is because I didn't get the chance to attend the camping trip last year because I was still on the waiting list at the time!

wow! i'm so excited about orientation, it sounds like it gonna be fun! hey ucsfpharmgirl, if the 4 spots aren't taken up yet, do you think i can reserve a spot too? 🙂 😀

what's PDC? is that one of the pharm frats or an organization?

thanks for all the help/tips/and info neonam & pharmgirl! not just for the orientation stuff too, but i remember back during interviews you guys had lots of tips, interview questions, suggestions and info that really helped! thanks so much and hopefully i'll get to meet you guys in person some time to thank you again!

Hey did you have to send in your student health info to receive those?
I haven't done it yet...just wondering

I got mine today, and I have not yet sent out my health info, so you should be getting yours too shortly. 👍

pdc = phi delta chi. it's one of the two pharm frat. you'll learn more about it during our activities next fall.

Padwan,

You don't have to send in your student health requirements in order to get your userid. Most likely, it's because you live out-of-state and that is why your info has not arrived yet. The registrar just loves us Californians more, that's all. 😱 Yeah, with your userid and password, you can access your UCSF e-mail account, GALEN, and the whatever is available online from the registrar's office.

Sorry, I won't be able to join you guys on the camping trip, but, for those who feel indebted to me and UCSFpharmgirl, you can repay us in sangrias the next time we take you newbies out to ChaCha.

The gods for finals week were good to me, padwan, as I am still alive and enjoying the hot Sacramento sun. Catch you on Parnassus hills. Give me a ring when u are out in SF searching for your apartment.

Hey you guys...just to let you know....once you give Neonam several glasses of Sangria....he totally lossens up. It's so funny. Last time we were at ChaChaCha we must of drank 1 & 1/2 pitchers b/w the both of us....at first I didn't think he could handle his liquor...but I was amazed that he did. Can't wait till the next time we go back to ChaChaCha.

Hey Julesc76...so far there is room in my car...so I'll put you down. WOW I'm excited that people are interested in my tour. I'll make sure you guys won't be disappointed. Hey Neonam...it seems that more than 4 people might sign up...do you think you could help with this tour?? Are you bringing your car to SF??

Huh? When did I get drafted in this cockamaney tour of yours? Nope, I'm not bringing my car to SF this year, got too many parking tickets and dead batteries last year. UCD wants to be a part of your tour. I'm volunteering my bro. He'll agree to it if you ask nicely. 😀

Hi,
My name's Jen and I also am worried about housing..and everything else...j/k! =) I called housing today and asked them if I had a chance of gettting housing, and they said that if you put an earlier date you need housing, then you have a much better chance of getting it. So over the phone I changed my date that I needed housing from Sept 1 to July 1, and they said it is much more likely that I'll hear from housing within the next week or two! So, call housing and try that and hopefully it will help. =)
Let me know if you hear anything else.
Thanks everyone for all of your helpful/interesting/funny comments! I'm looking forward to starting UCSF in September!!
🙂

Wow Thanks! That is a great advice!!!! 👍

Regarding campus housing, I heard on the phone that there is studio apartments that goes by ~900bucks(UCSF owned). I checked online, but all I see is the shared complexes at avenue, aldea, and turks. Does anyone know anything about this studio apartment(quality, accessability to grocery stores, 😕 availability of parking)????

wow! thanks withoutadoubt, i'm gonna call in tomorrow and try to change my date! good tip 👍

Personally, do you guys recommend UCSF owned apartments or private ones around campus? Campus housing seems reasonable, but I am just concerned about being late to class because of shuttle being late.

Only if you live at Aldea Housing or Turk, will you have to use the shuttle. For the most part, I think it's very reliable. Ask Jason about it cuz he lived at Turk last year. Whether you decide to live at Turk or Aldea depends on your personality. If you wanna hook up with a lot of pharmacy students from your class as well as the upperclassmen and form a close network really easily, Turk is the planting ground. It's harder to meet and make good friends if you commute. Aldea is also a nice place to live.

Personally, if you can, I recommend you try to get a place at the Avenue Housing because it's close to campus and you will be sharing the place with UCSF students, so you have the best of both worlds.

I wouldn't worry about being late due to the shuttle. I think I was only late one time last year. Turk is only about a mile away from school, so you can walk it as well (it's a nice walk through the park). Turk is kinda like a dorm, but it is nice because you get to know a lot of people. I live in Avenue Housing now, and it's great. I am so close to campus that I can actually pick up wireless from the library!
The studios at Aldea are nice, but a little bit isolated from the rest of the world.

I hear there are some students that commute from the east bay?
I'm thinking of buying an apartment in Oakland. Do you guys really think commuting for 3 years from Oakland is doable? More specifically, I know classes start at 9, but from looking at the PDF schedule of classes online, I'm not sure exactly when students get out of classes and go home? Is it before 4? to beat rushhour traffic?

yes, some of our classmates commute from the east bay, like oakland. so it's doable.
as far as the class schedule, you won't know when you get out of classes until you get the lab assignment at the beginning of the quarter.

Skywalker, yeah, i know some classmates who commute from the East Bay and they do very well. If you want to be involved in extracuricular activities and attend social events, then commuting might get in the way. You are usually too tired to stay after class to socialize.

Keep in mind that class sometimes start at 8:00 am (I think that for P1's you usually have 2 days where classes start at 8 am for the entire academic year and being late for CP discussion will cost you 2.5% off your total grade, yikes). Our schedule varies a lot due to Project Days and group meetings for pharmacy practice. I think some of my classmates prefer to take BART so they can escape the congestion on the Bay Bridge and catch up on their sleep.

did anyone get university housing? cuz the new update e-mail said all the housing spots are filled! so i guess i'm gonna start aptmt hunting soon. i'm gonna call housing on monday just to double check. lemme know if anyone needs a possible roommate!

u can check out off campus student housing or craigslist.org

hi,
I'm getting a little worried cuz I haven't heard anything yet from housing either. What email did you get Julesc76 from UCSF recently cuz I haven't recieved any update email recently (within the past week)? I called housing today and they said there are still spots available and that now they're assigning spots to people who need housing in August. I put that I need housing July, but haven't heard yet...we'll see. =)

hey jen/ withoutadoubt- i got an e-mail update (provisional update #2) last week. on the e-mail it said that the housing spots were filled up, but you're right... i called today and they said housing has not filled up yet.

and b/c of the new "system" pharm and dental students prolly won't get housing unless you can move in earlier and start paying earlier (which SUCKS). but yeah, i bumped my housing to Aug 10th, i guess an extra month's rent is worth having a furnished place. g'luck and hope you get housing~!

thanks ucdbiochem, i'll start checking craigslist/housing lists soon if i don't hear back from housing.

To all these who have experience living on campus: How furnished were the apartments? Also, which internet services do you guys recommend??

no new info to add here...just wanted the UCSF thread to be above the USC one. 🙂

i got a call from housing and they said they only have shared room housing at the ave houses and turk, which does not sound so great. anyone get their own room from ucsf? or are most ppl findnig their own place?

yeah, i called housing too and they said that they only have shared rooms at turk. the smallest room, 4 ppl to one bathroom. sounds a tad of a squeeze, but if i get offered housing i will prolly take it (just to not have to worry about furniture).

if i don't get university housing, i *might* live in a house. it's a 3 bedrm house for ~$1700-1800. but to get to one room, you have go through the other room (so it's like almost having a semi roommate). my mom's friend's friend owns it and is willing to cut me a deal. anyone possibly interested? 😀 only thing is,.. it's on 38th ave, south of ucsf.... a bit far. 😕

oh yeah..... *bump* ... on top of USC again.... hehehehe. 😉

Rec'd my award letter today. I'll definitely need an alternative loan.

Hey I got my letter too. Contact the Fin Aid dept, I thought I would be taking out a huge private loan but the woman at Fin Aid broke it down. I onyl have to find 6 grand in private loans, 22,500 is Unsub Staff and 8,500 Staff. Also, UCSF is offering 9 grand in aid as well. I would contact them and figure out what that letter meant. i was bit confused with the breakdown myself, but they cleared it up.

adios

I rec'd a letter that said Stafford money isn't disbursed until after orientation. That means if you're going to get an apartment on your own, you'll have to come up with first, last, and deposit on your own. Is there any way to get these monies earlier? I'll call financial aid next week, but does anybody have any experience/information about such?

Microbus out

Yeah, I think the financial checks are disbursed during the first week of orientation. OSACA lobbies pretty hard on behalf of the pharmacy students, so you don't have to worry about getting kicked out of school cuz your tuition is past due and you don't have your financial aid check yet. However, if you are getting an apartment on your own and need to come out with a wad of cash, you will have to find other sources. Hope that helps.

Yea no kidding, I have sold stock and saved all sorts of monies the last two months to pay for the damn apt. I am flying out this week to get a place. It's a tough thing, but I should be reimbursed with the fin aid check. Good luck! It's about 2,000 right off the bat. Sucks

I had a walk in meeting with a finacial aid advisor and she told me Pharmacy students shouldn't have to take private loans. She says they are well covered (relative to other students at UCSF), unless you have a morgage.
