This thread is for discussing applications to the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in the 2024-2025 (class of 2029) cycle.

Hi everyone! I know every year applicants are always wondering when they will hear back from schools. This past cycle we heard if we were offered an interview on 11/13, interviews were through zoom in December, and offers were extended by email on 1/9! Obviously no guarantee that the timeline will stay the same but hopefully it will give you somewhat of an idea🙂

Current (very tired, on anesthesia rotation) 3rd year if anyone has any questions 🤠

Upcoming 1st year also can answer questions

Exhausted 2nd year (on a necropsy internship) here for questions as well 🫡

In-state, applying for what will be my second year! Was bummed that they didn't offer feedback on my application. I spent the year working, became a lead at the GP I was working at in November and then in May moved on to be a surgical assistant at a specialty surgical-only practice. GPA is a 3.5 and really that's my biggest obstacle. Any insight? I think I am planning on retaking some classes in the fall, in preparation for what would be my third year applying. Do you guys think a master's program would be wiser? I am also just wondering if I should put my attention elsewhere altogether going for some OOS schools which may be more lenient about my GPA. UF is the dream, if I can stay IS that would be everything but I am really discouraged after last year's rejection. Sorry for the word vomit y'all but any insight is appreciated.

I think it’s good that you added some leadership and specialty experience to your resume this year! A 3.5 GPA is usually just enough to get past the internal GPA cut so if you really rock your personal statement and have varied/meaningful experiences you have a real shot. I will also say while UF is a great school it has its faults like every other vet school, so if you get in somewhere else that makes sense for you finanacially etc I would take it. Feel free to PM me if you want to talk more. I’m on vacation block and got Covid on my trip to Mexico so I have a lot of free time aha.

Hi!
Does anyone know the prompt for the video essay? I do not see a question or instructions. Thank You!

I found this on the UF VMCAS page: "For questions during the cycle, please contact our office at [email protected] using the subject line "VMCAS Application Questions" in your email."

And here is what last year's prompt said:
"Instructions: This is a recorded question requiring a recorded response. Please follow the steps below to submit your video.

Watch the following video: https://youtu.be/QXM1g9VVa0Q.

Setup your phone/webcam in landscape mode, look directly into the camera as much as possible, use a neutral background and dress professionally.

Next, review the instructions on this site: Upload files & folders to Google Drive - Computer - Google Drive Help

Lastly, when uploading to Google Drive and choosing share options, make sure your shared link can be viewed by anyone (see EXAMPLE) and simply copy your video link into the essay response box.

Video Transcript: First, introduce yourself. Then, answer the following questions in 1 minute and 30 seconds total. 1) People say you are ___ (adjective/phrase)? Why do they say this? 2) If you had to describe veterinary medicine to someone who is completely unfamiliar with the profession, how would you explain it? 3) What does the admissions committee need to know about you for admissions consideration?"

This years video question is different than last though!

Last minute question!! On the UF supplemental application, there is a section for listing activities. Should this be treated similarly to VMCAS experiences section? I'm not sure if they just want "activities" the year before enrollment or if they want a full history even back to high school days. I'm also currently enrolled in prerequisites and they state "List how you have spent or plan to spend your time before entering UF (employment, travel, military, etc) while not enrolled in college." Should I be listing the two jobs I'm working right now even though it is not during my traditional college experience or does this still count as college? For reference I graduated in 2020 and finished my Master's in 2023. I know I'm overthinking this, but any insight would be wonderful!!

Hi everyone I think I may have made a small error on the professional app and I’m freaking out.

When listing my educational history, I put all of my schools, but I accidentally said that I only attended UF until Dec 2023, but that is not entirely true.

I started taking graduate classes through UF in spring 2024 to pursue a graduate certificate (not a degree) in shelter medicine which I am continuing until May 2025. My verified VMCAS will confirm this and UF can see it in their own records.

Can my application be thrown out because of this?

You cannot edit your professional app once it’s submitted, but can I just submit a new one?

Should I contact the admissions team? I am worried I will not get an answer since the deadline closes Monday. I am also worried that I may flag UF’s attention to my mistake that they might not have noticed.

I also saw that UF may email me if they have any questions about my information. Could this be a part of that?

Basically, can someone tell me what should I do and let me know if I ruined my application to my dream school over something this stupid and careless.

Don’t feel alone because I actually messed up on the same exact thing 😬 I emailed UF before I submitted a new application just because I didn’t want to have to pay 30 dollars again. They responded and said “It should not be a problem as long as it is listed on your VMCAS application.” With that being said it will be fine as long as it’s correctly listed and labeled on the regular vmcas. I would email them just so you have a response in writing in case there is any discrepancies in the future!

Ahh thank you so much for saying this. I was panicking so bad and needed to see this happened to someone else and that it was all okay. I spent the whole weekend stressing because I knew I wouldn’t be able to get a response from them and knew I wouldn’t hear back for a while and I needed some reassurance. I’ll email for documentation like you said!

Of course! Glad I could help! Good luck this application cycle!

Hi! Did anyone notice on the pre requisite section for the UF program on VMCAS it says to enter grades as grade points (i.e. C is 2.0)? But you can only select from your courses as inputted in the transcript section, where they are listed as letters. Should I email them about this?

Upcoming 1st year also can answer questions
Are there any in- state students in your class with low GPA's? Two of my 3 GPAS make the cut off and I'm still debating on pushing the submit button. I heard that they will look at in- state students with lower than the cut off but just a handful.

previously it was just recommended to be above a 3.0 but it does look like the wording has changed to mandatory. I am not in this boat but I would call for clarity.

First time applicant. Received email confirming my application is complete and released for review.

I got that same email yesterday, where it says I’m in consideration. I submitted mine September 3rd

Thank you both for your replies. I’m in state and received the same email today. Good luck to everyone!

If we received an email that we are completed and released for consideration, does that mean we made it pass the GPA cut off?

No, this just means they have received all of your required materials/your application is complete. UF will not send out rejections of any kind typically until they send out interview invites. Their internal GPA cut varies by year based on the average GPA of the applicant pool.

Is the gpa cut off not a 3.0 ?

2 things:
1. Is there an applicant portal for UF?
2. What is the average OOS GPA cut-off?

There is a GPA cutoff to apply and then usually an internal GPA cut to make it to interviews.
The cutoff to apply is actually new this year, I don’t know if that means they are not doing internal GPA cuts

There was a cutoff to apply when I did in 2021, I’m not sure if it was changed since then but there has been an internal cut every year since then to my knowledge

Maybe it’s been on and off because I even found a few reddit/facebook posts that also discuss UF not having a GPA cut on application but it was heavily recommended to be above a 3.0

As far as I know beginning last cycle they started to review all packets about the 3.0 w no like internal gpa cut off like before. I’m not sure if this is 100% correct but it’s what I gathered from talking to profs!

This would be more fair. Having a secret cutoff is almost stealing some people’s application fees.

Is anyone else following the situation on campus right now (A student is currently being charged as a felony sex offender due to filming a woman changing from outside her bedroom window)? It's becoming an increasing concern as we are about to hear back for interviews. This student is still in the general population and continues to joke and mock the situation, per his classmates currently attending. UF has not sent an email, or had any communication about this situation, nor are they providing resources to help students who feel unsafe. I almost want to ask about this at my interview, but I think as a queer student I would prefer to ask how they prepare to protect my identity in a state that has already heavily legislated against my existence, and I'm sure will continue to do so given the recent elections. INSERT THE BIGGEST SIGH HERE

As a current student, I have not heard anything about this student "mocking" the situation. Every time I see him around campus (which is very rarely) he is alone and not speaking to anyone. He very much keeps to himself and stays away from people as I'm sure he is extremely humiliated. I personally do not feel unsafe here or threatened by this person. I understand your concerns, but I do not think that this is something that should turn you away from UF. I have no regrets coming here and everything about it has been absolutely amazing. As far as UF sending emails about it, theres nothing that the vet school can really do yet until it goes to court because of UF (the university, not the vet school) rules. Because of this, our deans essentially have their hands tied in the situation. I can promise you that they are doing as much as they can behind closed doors even though it may not seem that way. Additionally, UF has plenty of resources available for people who may feel unsafe, as well as people who identify as LGBTQ+.

This is really nice to hear. I saw on the reddit post that someone said he seemed to joke about it during a large animal lab, but now that I'm re-reading these comments (which got ugly) this may have just been a disgruntled student spreading rumors, so I apologize!
