UF c/o 2014... It Begins!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have a question for the distance campus students. Has anyone thought of hooking their TV up to the internet to watch the lectures? If so, does anyone know how to do so? I know it is possible, the only advice I have gotten on it is to hook up the laptop to the TV with an HDMI cable...but my computer doesn't have an HDMI out. I have seen blu-rays that are capable of accessing the internet, but I don't know if it is capable of browsing like normal or just able to get the netflix etc.....

use VGA cable then. You don't need hi-def to watch lectures.

Did you get any F's on pre-req's? If you did, surely you already retook them, otherwise, I don't think you are eligible for UF.

Yes, on one...Chem I lecture...because I had an incomplete that I didn't complete. I tested out of it a couple years later when I went back to school.

For the record, I can still bang out an all-nighter here and there...just takes me a whole day to recover 🙂

That transfer video but not sound correct? Any advice on how to transfer sound? The sound on my laptop is not the greatest at all so watching it on a TV would be useless with my laptop sound...

If your laptop had hdmi, that would be the easiest, otherwise it may get complicated. You'll need a tv with either a vga or dvi input (the laptop probably has a vga output). For audio, you'll need some kind of audio inputs on the tv. Look for a red and white RCA input (not the output). For that, you'll need a 3.5mm Stereo Male to 2 RCA Male adapter to go from the computer to the tv. Sounds fun, eh? I have mine set up at home with a receiver, so the laptop goes into the receiver and out to external speakers.

I do have a VGA output, and was thinking I could use the headphone jack to the 3.5mm, I will have to turn the TV around and see if I can get all of that on the same source, otherwise I will hear it on one source and see it on another. I do know I can do it with the stereo, the only issue with that is watching lectures in stereo at night probably isn't the best...I really don't think the neighbors want to go to sleep listening to a med chem lecture!!!

You can only use one source at a time. If you have the video on one and the sound on another, then you will need to watch it without sound; and then later; listen to it without a picture. This would take twice as long plus you would need a photographic memory to memorize all of the video so you could sync it up to the sound in your brain.

Listening through the stereo is the only way to watch TV nowadays. Max out the sound quality. Your goal should be movie theatre sound.

Does your stereo have a headphone jack? If so, you can listen with headphones...with a "headphone extension cord" so you can sit across the room...or wireless headphones. But, if you turn down the bass, then listening at normal listening levels through the stereo speakers will be fine.

I often watch TV through our rather substantial stereo late at night while my wife is sleeping in the next room. I leave the bass at the normal setting and just have the volume turned down as low as possible so I can still comfortably listen and it works out fine...even with shows like 24 and Lost which have gunshots and explosions.

Also, the world has changed. My pre-K 4 1/2 year old knows that DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid (granted, she usually messes up a few of the syllables.) We didn't teach her this, she learned it at preschool in "science" class. The definition of DNA is that her mommy's genes and daddy's genes make her.

Anyway, it will do the neighbors good to get a little late night pharmacy education.

Tested out? Do you mean the CLEP exam?

Yeah, I felt really bad for you in that regard. Of course, if you two had gotten married....😀

Oh yeah, fenderbiz, now I remember your story. That was nuts. You might as well try to appeal the appeal. Tell them that you consider marriage very sanctified and you only want to get married once and you would hate to lose your soulmate in a (somewhat) long distance relationship.

If that doesn't work, then I can loan you some photos of the decision committee members in some compromising positions. In the past, I have found that the photos can be very effective in getting them to change their minds.

(And with that, for the third time, my pharmacy career ended before it even began🙁 ...... you remember the rest of it....)

Haha, you are just diggin' your hole  I'm sure the admissions committee lurks on here, too, to get a laugh, or pity us poor souls.

BTW, my 'test out' was not a CLEP per se, it was a college departmental test that UF said was fine.

Well, my Momma always told me that, "UF said was fine is as UF said was fine does."

Now, to me that is a rather current reference...but to the young whippersnappers entering pharm school, a reference from 1994 could easily be before their "time."

Anyone else have interviews at the Orlando Campus May 7th?

There are a few people that have posted here that they have interviews on May 7th. I have already had my interview. Good luck!:luck: I hope to hear that you are one of my classmates for next year!😀

Any tips for the ppl interviewing will be helpful thnx!!!

Be yourself, be honest, it is quick and mostly painless! 😉

One thing to remember, the interviewers are told to be stoic, neither encouraging or discouraging. I felt like I had completely bombed (I didn't know they were supposed to act this way!). You will be fine!

I just got my interview invitation for the Orlando campus on May 7th!!

I did too....I'm so excited and nervous too!!! This was my number 1 pick and came just on time. I was actually already planning my move to GA since I have been accepted into South University and classes start in June but if (and when i get in...let me be positive right?!) I will for sure decline my seat over at South and be an official GATOR woot woot.... 🙂

Yea sounds like my NOVA interview....it was more like an interrogation!!! HORRIBLE....but I got accepted so hopefully this interview will be better!

It is totally different than the NOVA interview... so do not be nervous!! The NOVA interview was more of a 21 questions situation ... This interview is meant to test if you can handle a conversation ... you will do great!!

Gainesville people who interviewed in April Heads up I just got the screening email... it is from [email protected] ... the subject was
get

Application Station - Student Edition Invitation

Those of you who have completed this process earlier... is there any other email we should be expecting?! thanks!

I didn't interview anywhere but UF, so I had no practice interviews. I don't think it is interrogation style at UF, it is only a few questions. They just stare blankly when you are answering, like they would rather be getting a root canal than listen to whatever it is you are saying. But like I said quick, and MOSTLY painless. And as far as I know everyone has survived...

Yea same here, UF is my number 1 and the only other school I applied to was LECOM-bradenton. I actually interviewed, got accepted, sent in my deposit and then the very next day got an email from UF. So if I get in then it will be $500 wasted but its ok because I'll be going to UF! 🙂

And I guess I will see you on Friday at the interview!! Good luck!! :xf:

Congrats! I was planning on moving to GA if Mercer accepted me (had an interview back in mid-April but didn't find out if I got in yet). The next week after I had my interview, I got an email from UF inviting me for an interview. In a matter of 3 days, I got an interview invite, went to the interview, and got accepted... after waiting like a million years! 🙂

Wow so I've literally spent the entire day here at work catching up on this thread lol. Congrats to everyone 🙂

I was accepted to Jax and I'm pretty excited. Don't worry I'll join the facebook group soon lol. Here's ALOT of interesting conversation starters and I want all of your opinions:

1. I'm highly considering living in Gainesville even though I'll be attending Jax. My friend showed me around Jacksonville after my interview and I got super bored (its super old and stuffy) :/ After some hard studying I think its important to have some people MY AGE to grab drinks with, workout with, etc. I took the drive to Gainesville and it wasnt bad at all. I think I'm comfortable with that.

2. I'm really concerned about being able to afford UF. I don't get any support from my parents, and according to Mr. Mafehee (spelling?) we can only borrow $28 - $29K/yr...and private loans arent an option anymore.

Tuition alone is 16.1K, then plus new laptop, iphone, moving expenses, first/last/deposit on an apt, things are looking really tight. It doesnt help that I have some credit card debt from a few years back. I really think I'm going to need to work to cover some living expenses, which sucks. :/

3. I'm kind of excited about the prospect about attending Jax but living in Gainesville. According to some 1PDs that transferred from Gainesville to Jax, I will only have to go to Jacksonville twice a week the first year, and I dont have to worry about annoying meetings in the middle of the day like in Gainesville, because at Jax they cluster all the meetings together as much as possible to keep you from having to drive to school everyday. This means more flexibility for the stuff I want to do, like work...lol.

4. Just out of curiousity, I asked Marcy if interest in the MBA program was grounds for petition to be transferred to the main campus, and she got really pissed at me lol. She was like "I don't know why students keep asking me that, maybe there is some FORUM where you are reading that" and I just LOLed and politely thanked her for clarifying.

4. I really want to join the ticket lottery! Maybe I'll get luckkyyy

5. I'm looking for an affordable roommate situation in Gainesville. I'm fun, smart, and clean so keep me in mind. 😉

6. My numbers are all effed up, hopefully counting isnt something I have to worry much about as a pharmacist...😀

JB

Id reconsider living in Gainesville. There are plenty of people your age to hang out with in Jacksonville. Its a beautiful city with the beach, river, not to mention JOBS! Ginesville is a small town, and while I see the appeal I would imagine things being quite competitive.

Bills will be tight. The best thing to do is to eliminate expenses NOW and work NOW, even if you are scanning groceries. Some people just cant handle work, or cannot balance it. Heres how my first year went:

I am in Jax and I had to be on campus 2-3 days a week. It wasnt always to learn, mostly it is to regurgitate what you learned, so you must be prepared. Usually its a quiz, or a presentation or perhaps you may be called on to answer a question. So if youre scheduled to be on campus, assume at least an hour beforehand to prepare for what youre doing.

Every week I made a list of the lectures that would be posted and on what day they would be posted. The crap part is that some days are busier than others and generally what happens is Monday rolls around and no lecture loads until 5pm. So on Tuesday you watch Monday's lectures, etc. All of this works out ok until Friday (I worked Friday nights) so I was always behind when the weekend rolls around. Id usually save them until Monday so I would have something to do then, until that Monday's lectures posted. Makes sense?

That being said, I was one of very few who kept up with lectures. Many people got much better grades than me because instead of watching lectures they studied for exams. You only have so many hours in the day. 🙄

I think overall the most important thing is to not stress yourself out. Go with the flow and try not to waste time. Im older so I dont go out and party till 2am but at the same time once my husband came home at 6p I usually put the books away for the night. If you can prioritize what is important to you, youll do fine.

Do you mean that they never watched most of the lectures and just studied? Or did they watch all of the lectures, but not close to when they were posted, but rather before an exam, they watched all of the lectures relating to that exam?

What would you study if you didn't watch the lectures?

Your experiences have been helpful.

Well if it makes you feel any better I gave my $250 deposit at NOVA when I first got accepted just to be on the safe side if I didn't get admitted anywhere else. And then I gave my $1000 deposit at South University since I had already planned to move there since it was an accelerated 3yr program. So there goes $1250 down the drain 🙁 but UF is far more worth it!!!

I would agree that UF is far more worth it in terms of quality of education...however, based strictly on financials, the accelerated 3 year program is the way to go. It gets you an extra year of PharmD work at $100,000 / year which will more than pay for the private school tuition.

Mind you, that $100,000 figure is before taxes. Perhaps about $70,000 after taxes??? Just a guess.

They read the powerpoints, I guess.

Basically instead of catching up on lectures they were behind in, they would study for the exam that week. I, caught up on lectures and studied for the exam for less days.

I guess thats how that worked. Some would do as you mentioned, watch 12-15 lectures on that exam 1-2 days before. Some didnt even bother if they were too far behind. This was more common this spring semester when we got slammed with quizes and exams. Id kill myself if I did it that way, but Im kind of OCD. I needed to watch them all. A lot of the crammers got better grades than me, so you should probably just do the opposite of what I say. Then again, I wasnt up until 3am studying, either.

Thanks for the input. It is EXTREMELY helpful. What I would call "active studying" is best. That is really, really concentrating on skimming and getting only the important stuff out of it. Basically the only time I have done that in my life is 1/2 hour before an exam if I was grossly ill prepared (lucky to get a C) ... or ... for the reading section of the PCAT or SAT...which is funny in the sense that you would think that all of that SAT prep that I did for the reading passages would have carried over into my study habits. I took a class in high school called SAT/PSAT review three times. It was a 1/4 of the year class and I had it for 2 quarters plus I had it in summer school. My PSAT English score was 460 and my SAT was 580. I only took the SAT once. That is out of 800 and I think 500 was the mean. That is how they used to score the SAT.

My point is, had I implemented that "every second counts" attitude toward studying in college, I am sure it would have been awesome!!! I am lucky if I can read 10 pages of a science textbook in an hour. (Or was it 6 pages an hour for 10 minutes per page, I think that sounds more accurate.) Anyway, that is with understanding, but without memorizing which is my weak spot...and I am sure that most of pharm will be memorizing. I will live, think, sleep, and breath flash cards on my iTouch with www.iflipr.com that is my plan. I have never done anything like that before, but I would like to go through flash cards at red lights, commercials on TV, waiting in line, etc.

I guess my iTouch iflipr application will piss everyone off as much as everyone else's use of constant texting pisses everyone off. They will have to pass a law that says you can't iTouch iflipr while driving. And, it will be considered rude to do it during lectures, at work, and all of the other crazy places people text. I am a non-texter. I don't see the point in it all. Maybe I am just to old to be hip, but I would rather call or e-mail.

Maybe I can get my iTouch surgically implanted into my palm, or maybe on the back of my hand would be more convenient. I will have to ask the plastic surgeons.

When I get the iPhone, that is an app I will have. And use incessantly as well. Though I LOVE text messaging. Sometimes what I have to say doesn't necessitate me dialing and waiting for someone to pick up, making small talk then just telling them the answer to their question. Takes too long. Send them the answer in a text and be done in less than 30 seconds.😀

Editted to add: When I was taking OChem these last two semesters I lived and breathed flashcards. I would take them to dinner and use them when my husband was driving, waiting before class...it is the reason I managed an A.

:xf::luck:Good Luck to those interviewing in Orlando tomorrow!!! :luck::xf:

Good Luck to everyone who has interviews today! Don't be nervous.

On a different note...I graduate tonight!!!

Filling out my background check...so many addresses to fill in. Makes me wish we hadn't moved so much... Hopefully we will buy a house in the next few years so I won't have 10 more addresses in my life!

That is so awesome!!! :highfive::soexcited::claps:

ConGRADulations!!! 😉

Thank you, after 7 classes this semester (and all A's), I still can't believe it's over. 🙁 But, my Chinese professor will add a Chinese III class this summer that I will take.🙂

My background check will be a breeze...already filled out. Since I have always lived in the same house, have never held a job, and being 17 helps. lol

Well its official! All my paperwork is done, grades are in, and my admission is no longer conditional!

Hey Sakigt - about how many lectures and hours a day are the lectures?

Does any one have a list of the books we will be using with author names? It would be nice to get a head start on looking for inexpensive copies of these books.....and also to spread out cost over several months......

Or if there is anyone else who knows the answer to that question regarding how many hours a day of lecture it would be appreciated.🙂

At my interview in Orlando in April, I spoke to the current student representatives about books. You actually don't have to buy any. There is a copy of each book in the library (granted one copy isn't enough, but you can get by with one copy for the Orlando campus of 50 studetns) ... and... most (not all) of them are available online to us (paid for by UF.)

For most classes, you never use the books, you just go off of the power points from the lectures...some teachers will say we are responsible for chapter 3, but it won't be taught in lecture...that is probably the only time to go to the book (which will hopefully be available to us online for free.)

You amaze me, taking chinese I...let alone chinese III... I was happy to get through English I and II, and I grew up speaking english. I would love to learn another language... but I am probably too old for all that!!! 😀

Hahaha! Well yes you have a major advantage their...being *sooooooo* old (29) I have had way more places lived...not necessarily because I had to, but to get better rent...and then I did live in WI for a few years. The last year of living up there was part of the 7 years. I had to use google maps to find the right street address.

Woo hoo interview over now I have to wait to receive that letter!!!!

:xf: Don't drive yourself crazy! I know I did. I checked my email incessantly from the moment I left the interview...Scott thought I was losing my mind....maybe I was. In the end, he checked the email when i was on my way home one day and found the email before I did!!!

Or if there is anyone else who knows the answer to that question regarding how many hours a day of lecture it would be appreciated.🙂

I am c/o 2014 so I don't know for sure, but from looking at last year's schedule, it looks like 5 classes each of which meets 4 times per week for 50 minutes. So figure 3 hours 20 min per class times 5 classes = 16 hours 40 minutes.

Which averages 3 hours 12 minutes per day based on a 5 day week...but most people watch the lectures at twice the recorded speed, so you get through them in 1/2 the time!!! Everyone watches them at least in 1 1/2 times faster than the recorded speed. (Per student representatives at the Orlando April interviews.)

I heard this too. One of them told us he bought EVERY book the first year and it was the largest waste of money ever. He said he only really needed one of them that had required readings...I think it was BioChem, but I am not sure.

You do realize that either 2 years of a foreign language in High School or 8 college credits of a foreign language are required for UFCOP?

If you don't already have them, it looks like you may be taking a foreign language for Summer Session I and Summer Session II.

Ummm...of course I realize this!!! I took three years of spanish in high school. I remember about 5 phrases...none of which are useful!

About the languages...I love languages, and I too grew up only knowing English. I took two years of French in high school. When I met a few foreign exchange students, I started learning Korean, I can read and write it but half the time can't understand what I am reading! lol In college, I took Mandarin Chinese and I LOVE it!! So easy to learn and I am getting quite good at speaking it. I really want to learn Japanese as well. After pharm school, I just might stay in Gainesville and formally learn Korean and Japanese, and stay current with Chinese.

About the background check...I submitted it yesterday and was cleared by today. There wasn't much to check up on me, although they were dismayed that I didn't have any credit history! lol:laugh:

I heard the same thing, but still want to know the books we are using.....I want to see for myself what the material looks like....I also like to collect books....🙂

Here is the information that was in the conditional letter email. I haven't looked at it yet, so I'm not sure how helpful it is:
