UF c/o 2014... It Begins!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I received an interview today for the Jacksonville campus!!!!!!!!!! Gainesville was my first choice, but Jacksonville was my second. The drive is about the same for me either way, so I'm ecstatic!!!!
When I talked to Penny, she said they really only consider your first two choices and try to get you your first choice if it is possible.
Congratulations on your interview 😀...mine is April 16th (Gainesville). My parents and I are headed there to get an apartment for fall classes this weekend. 🙂 Even if I totally blow my interview (which I hope I don't:xf:), I will still be in Gainesville this fall. 😍

Congrats! You said today, Friday Apr. 2nd? Would you mind sharing your statistics? I'm still waiting.
It seemed like I waited forever too, good luck, I'm sure you will get an invite. Penny just emailed me to say she got my reply for my interview (which of course was YES!). Hang in there!

Nguyenmyquoc,

Yes, I received my e-mail this morning about 10:00. The interview is for next Friday April 9 at the Jacksonville campus. My stats are:

-91 PCAT
-3.1 Science GPA
-3.3 Cumulative GPA
-BS in Biochemistry from FSU
-no pharmacy experience at all, but a decent amount of volunteer work and extensive work experience in management positions at healthcare facilities
-LORs from 2 science professors

I live right between Gainesville and Jacksonville, so I put Gainesville and Jacksonville as 1 and 2 (respectively). However, my reasons for each campus were exactly the same, I can easily commute to either campus. So even if I had received the invite to the Gainesville campus, I don't think I could possibly be happier! Good luck!!

aw come on, man. You don't recognize who that is?

OK, people, help me out. The whole point of this forum is to share your information with others. So everyone (except fenderibz) who is this a picture of? Someone must know!!!😎

McGiver?

You got it. I googled "McGiver pictures" and sure enough, a little while later, I found it. But, back to my original question, is it a rocket? I suppose, but isn't McGiver supposed to be able to make his own rocket out of a straw, a rubberband, a used lottery ticket, and a broken ball point pen?

Actually, now that I look at the picture again, it is a very cool picture. He is just walking nonchalantly with a rocket/missle over his shoulder as he carries it with one hand, not a care in the world, just a normal day in the life... I mean, let's face it, doesn't everyone walk down the street with rocket over their shoulder?

Thanks! in fact, I got my acceptance letter from LECOM last Tuesday. However, the pharmacy that I work with ( I'm a Pharm. Tec.), doesn't recommend me to go to a private school. He went to a private school and now ends up paying 2000 dollars a month for student loan. He said it's not worth it. I don't know what I'm doing anymore.

Obviously, if you can get into UF and get (a) a better education and (b) pay less tuition, that is preferred...but if you don't get into UF...let's see...($100,000 / year) / (12 months) = ($8,333 / month before taxes) - (about 25% for taxes? = $2,083 for taxes) = ($6,250 / month after taxes) - ($2,000 for student loan) = ($4,250 / month AFTER taxes and AFTER student loan) I don't think there is a problem there, do you.

Also, if you pay $2,000 / month for the student loan, that is $24,000 per year. LECOM costs $23,000 / year, that is $92,000 total, even with interest, you should have it paid off in under 5 years.

Some private schools cost over $35,000 / year. Even at that price, it seems like an awesome deal to me.

UF is about $15,200 / year, so LECOM is $7,800 / yr more times 4 years = $31,200 total extra...so you would have it paid off in an extra year and a half or so.

However, you can take up to $33,000 a year in loans at UF, so I would imagine it is higher for Lecom (living expenses etc), I would also imagine that federal loans wouldn't cut it for private colleges if you come from a middle class family that cannot pay outright, so I would imagine some of it would be private loans which have higher interest rates, and could even include credit cards...

So while I do think $2000 a month is somewhat excessive, it could be rather high considering all types of loans used.

I went to the interview at LECOM on March 25th. They told me that the total cost (including housing, health insurance, transportation, tuition,...) would be about 44 000 a year. In addition, for every dollar we borrow from them now, we would have to pay back 3 dollars. I guess she meant if we pay mininum payments, we would end up paying 3 times more for interest. Therefore, after 4 years, and if I make minimun payments, I would end up paying almost 5 00 000 dollars. At this point, It sounds too much for me. What if I can't make it through 4 years? What do you guys think about it? Honestly, I need some advices, please.

You would pay over 500,000 dollars if her statement is accurate. That is a massive amount to comprehed all at once, but I believe student loans can be paid over a long period of time. And yes it is making minimum payments, but it is tax deductible interest which is great. I do worry somewhat about my loans, but I don't truly fear not making it through the program. Is that your anxiety raising that concern or true fear of not making it through the program? If you fear not making it through the program then it might be a sign to reevaluate your career path. I think though your anxiety over that dollar amount is getting the best of you. I would give it a day or two, think about it more before making a final decision.

I looked up your old posts. 3.9 GPA and 71 PCAT. Sounds like you will have no problem graduating. Also, I still think you will get into UF (in which case you will still owe a large pile of dough.)

This is important...GO FOR IT!!! Don't be intimidated. You can't live your life saying what if I get crippled my last year of pharmacy school...geez, worst case you can always go bankrupt and not pay the loans back.

I would be more concerned with getting killed in a car accident on the way to your interview at UF. Horriffic outcome, yes...but, let's face it, not too likely. You can't be too afraid to live your life. You EARNED a 3.9 GPA, you EARNED the right to be a Pharmacist (if you want to be.)

Nice to see this board picking up a little...we were on page two for a while!

You should be very concerned with how much you borrow. Dont go outside your comfort zone too much.

Thats just my opinion. A year ago I firgured what the heck, I could go to Nova and borrow more and get my Pharm D. Thank god I got into UF where tuition and my living expenses are cheaper. It would have been a mistake to borrow more than necessary at a different school.

Thanks a lot, guys. Pharmacy is the only thing that I actually love. I've been doing well in school; I also got 71 on the PCAT. If I dont' go to a pharmacy school this year, I'm sure that it will be the biggest regret of my life. However, If I go and can't make it through 4 years, I will be a trouble. I only make 9 dollars/hr working as a Tech. There's no way I can pay off that student loan. I wont change my major no matter what because it's the only profession that I actually like. what would you guys do if you're me?

It sounds like your mind is made, but you lack confidence in yourself (a huge problem of mine actually).

One thing I have learned from my husband is, one of the most important things a pharmacist needs is confidence in their own abilities, the people that second guess themselves often make silly mistakes (one must make careful decisions, but trust the ones they have made as correct) and are not trusted by those around them. Let's face it, if we do not trust ourselves, how can anyone around trust us?

Trust yourself, and ace your interview for UF!

Student loans are not forgiven through bankruptcy.......you are stuck with them no matter what happens......

oh, when you guys went to the interview at UF, did they tell you guys what the cost might be? including housing, tuition, books,...? Do they accept Bright Future Scholarship? I still have 40 credit hours left, if I go to LECOM, I will lose the Scholarship that I have because they don't accept bright future scholarship.

Yes they accept Bright futures up to whatever the total is (132 hours undergraduate I believe?).

They did not talk to us about cost, but we were free to ask the 1PDs all the questions we wanted. I believe if you go on their site www.cop.ufl.edu/studaff you can find it rather easily.

I was also told by them that buying most of the books is a waste of money, not all the professors require you to do reading and want you to learn what they lecture on. That would be a good question to ask them. One guy said he bought all the books and never even unwrapped some of them.

I just visted that website, but they don't really tell us how much the total cost will be. at LECOM, tuition is only 19 thousand dollars ( about 4 000 dollars more than UF), but they also estimate the cost for other expenses too. so I guess if we add them up, they would also cost about 35 000 dollars at UF. Do you think so?

I got my numbers from
http://www.aacp.org/resources/student/pharmacyforyou/admissions/Documents/PSAR1011_Table11.pdf
This comes from AACP (American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy) so it is very reliable. They put UF at $15,200 and LECOM at $23,000. LECOM must have another $4,000 of mandatory expenses similar to tuition. So, LECOM is figuring an extra $12,000 for room and board (rent and food.) You can eat ramen noodles and eat for under $1 / day. You can throw in some chicken breast and whole grain rice, beans, tuna fish, potatoes, frozen vegetables and still eat for much less than the average American (and much healthier.) You need to estimate your cost of food and extras (movies, beer) for yourself. Likewise, rent can be cheaper if you share a 4 bedroom house with 3 other students versus renting a 1 bedroom apartment.

I say, school is not a debt like borrowing money to go on a cruise or to buy a new car (which will depreciate,) but rather an investment. Not only will it enrich your quality of life, but it will be a very sound financial investment as well...especially for something that pays so well like pharmacy...unlike, say getting a Ph.D. in archeology.

I say follow your dreams, don't pick LECOM because it has a nice campus (I read your other posts,) pick UF because it has the best academic reputation. Also, the sattelite campuses have a "one big happy family" atmosphere. You will have a great time, noncompetitive, more like 1 big study group, and you will make friends for life.

Don't avoid ever having any debt...and also avoid ever making over $9 / hr. Businesses invest everytime they spend money, they do this with the intent on making more money in the future. Have you ever heard of a successful business that doesn't have any expenses?

Invest in yourself, you will be fine. Last year 100% of the students at the UF satellite campuses passed the boards on the first attempt. Overall UF had over a 99% pass rate.

Surround yourself by the best, be the best, follow your passion.👍

When I talked to Penny, she said they really only consider your first two choices and try to get you your first choice if it is possible.

really? lucky me. My interview is at my 4th choice. I'm still happy to have gotten one, though.

p.s. it's "Macgyver"

Last year total cost of living (what you can borrow) was $33k

Tuition costs were $15,555 or something like that.

They accept Bright futures but if you dont have a Bachelors yet, you wont be able to borrow the full $33k. Not sure what that amount is b/c I didnt have that problem.

Dont borrow more than you need, people!

Unsubsidized loans are capped at $8,500. That means anything over that amount you borrow will accrue intrest at 6.8%

Toss out the notion student loan is good debt. Follow your dreams, do well in school, but DONT waste your money.

Actually, it is MacGyver, but if you google McGyver you get him too. He is so cool you can even spell his name wrong and they know whom you mean.

Your 4th choice? That is strange what campus was it? What did you write on your supplemental essay regarding why you ranked the campuses the way you did?

I fully agree, don't waste money and don't borrow just because someone is willing to loan it to you. Also pay your loan back quicker than just paying the minimum if you can.

See how much you need for rent and then add in some for food and a little for "fun." Don't go out and buy a new stereo and justify it by saying that it was part of your student loan money.

No debt is "good" debt, however some debt is necessary and a good return on investment. Many of us on these boards are going to need to borrow to go to school. My husband is a pharmacist, but that doesn't mean we can afford to pay $15,000 a year out of pocket, no matter what FAFSA says. In addition there are other students that will need to borrow the maximum to help support family expenses.

I am not sure where anyone is telling the poster to borrow the maximum amount every year and go party. But if LECOM is the only school that excepts them (hopefully not but worst case scenario) then that person will need to borrow most of the maximum to go to school. You can't live in a cardboard box on the side of the road while studying for pharmacy school, we need a place to live, food to eat and transportation.

So yes, don't borrow all the money and blow it. But borrow what you need to go to school and follow your dream. We can't assume that the poster is choosing to pay more for education, but at the moment is looking at the options given them, which currently include going to a private school.

So does that mean that they already looked at PCATs in the 70-74th percentile already? I got a 73 and a 3.6 (science GPA) and I still haven't heard anything. 🙁

Hey everyone! I've been mostly lurking the last couple of months, but truthfully, I'm getting a little down about the waiting game myself and my family, who think I'm a shoe-in, are getting a little on my nerves, lol! I'm 40, and believe it or not I'll be getting my masters in drug chemistry from UF at the end of the summer semester and I haven't heard anything either. I emailed Penny and she told me the same thing as some of you have said--that my application is still being reviewed. At this point, I think those of us who have outstanding pre-reqs (mine is Physics II and Speech...can you believe Speech! I almost have a masters and I had to retake that) will have to wait until the semester is over to hear anything--that's my take.

My stats? Well, most of my pre-reqs are old, some during a time I was kinda rebellious...82% PCAT, 3.2 overall undergrad GPA, 3.35 science GPA, 4.0 graduate GPA. I'm a licensed lab supervisor, executive director of a non-profit organization, and a professional musician...I'm more than a little bit baffled I haven't been emailed. It's so hard waiting for someone else to determine your future, don't you think?

I have almost ten years of teaching experience at the collegiate level and UF would not waive the speech requirement for me......so, I am taking public speaking this semester.......it's not as bad as I thought, but is a waste of time and money.....

So, exactly what are you studying in Drug Chemistry?

That's hysterical Ochem! (about speech) Didn't you say somewhere you had a PhD?

Forensic Medicinal Chemistry--Drugs of Abuse. I was about halfway into my classes when it all woke up the Rx dragon. I'm still wondering why I didn't just buy a new car or get a b@@b job for my mid-life crisis.

Yep....I have a PhD in Organic Chemistry....thought about doing pharmacy school immediately after graduate school, but decided on a research position in pharmacology instead. But, decided research is too isolating for me.....

Just think...you can still buy a new car after pharmacy school....it's all midlife between the ages of 30 and 60 right?

That's crazy! My parents have told me I'm a shoe-in and it's getting on my nerves too.Two days ago that I got a letter in the mail from UF and she wanted to know if she could open it since I wasn't at home. I said yeah and then she said "April Fool's!!". That wasn't cool! haha. I just don't see why they're taking so long. A friend of mine who is a P1 @ the Jacksonville campus said one of her professors, who is on the admissions committee, said the PCAT's & GPA's weren't as high this year and that this was a good time for us to apply.

Ohhhh....my husband knows I'd have an aneurysm if he did that. He's already freaked enough. I've applied to another school as well and he had to give me the news that I was put in the alternate pool because yes, I was out of town. He could hardly speak.

I saw someone else post the same thing about GPA's and PCAT scores being more lax this go around. If this is true, I'm not sure why they're taking so long either. Haha, sometimes I wish they'd just send me a rejection so I could move on.

Coincidentally, my friends who graduated from FSU have made me promise that I would adorn the outside of my house with 'Nole'-paraphernalia if I'm not accepted 😀.

Oh, and OChem...I'll probably need a new car if I have to drive to 4 years of pharm school...don't really need the B@@B job, lol.

Oh no I would die! I graduated from UM so I would have an aneurysm walking in my door everyday if that happened. lol

If you're accepted you can always get the car as a celebration present and get the other when you graduate to congratulate yourself! 😀

Did you have an interview yet? Because I got my acceptance 5 days later. As far as interview invites, those seem to be random, I got mine a month and a half before my interview, my friend got his 5 days before...we both got accepted.

Nope. I didn't get an interview yet 🙁. I'm preparing myself for the worst as the inevitable end is coming. I'm trying not to let it bum me out though.

What campus are you applying too? More than half the dates are left for interviews, and I am pretty sure, the final interview at Gainsville still includes interviews for all the campuses. Jacksonville hasn't even had their first interview date yet.

What campus are you applying too? More than half the dates are left for interviews, and I am pretty sure, the final interview at Gainsville still includes interviews for all the campuses. Jacksonville hasn't even had their first interview date yet.

Yes, that's a little encouraging; I ranked Jacksonville #2.

Oh no I would die! I graduated from UM so I would have an aneurysm walking in my door everyday if that happened. lol

If you're accepted you can always get the car as a celebration present and get the other when you graduate to congratulate yourself! 😀

Is there a formal white coat ceremony?? And if so, does anyone know if the white coats are customized with your name and the pharmacy emblem?

silly i know , but i've dreamt of that customized white coat during my 4 years of undergrad at NSU while the graduate students stroll around in their coats. . sigh.

Yes there is a formal ceremony at the end of your first year in Gainsville. And yes you get to personalize your coat. The 1PDs were talking about it at my interview, even discussed who ordered which type of lettering.

...don't really need the B@@B job, lol.

Good for you, not to get off task, but fake is just that fake (in my opinion.)

Oh, the waiting game, over for me (interview this Friday) still going on for some. I say everyone with a 75 pcat and 3.0 gpa will get accepted. Just give it time and keep playing the waiting game.

I asked this before, has anyone had any dreams or nightmares while playing the waiting game? I had some weird dreams/nightmares. So glad it is over. (although I am not fully accepted yet and I can still blow the interview.)

What about my case? do you consider it a dream or a nightmare? Just kidding. My cousins and my parents want me to go to LECOM, but I change my mind when I go to work because the pharmacist doesn't want me to go. Don't even know what I'm doing yet.

I have almost ten years of teaching experience at the collegiate level and UF would not waive the speech requirement for me......so, I am taking public speaking this semester.......it's not as bad as I thought, but is a waste of time and money.....

Hey, the Public Speaking requirement actually worked very well for me. I live in Central Florida and I am unwilling to relocate. I didn't know there was a satelite UF pharmacy school in Orlando...so I was pre-Dental Hygiene even though I would have loved pharmacy and I would have basically hated scraping teeth all day.

I had taught High School for 2 years and there is a "Prior Life Experiences" form you can fill out in order to get out of taking a class. Well, I put it off for too long and when they denied me...apparently, teaching is not Public Speaking because you are stating facts rather than giving Persuasive Speeches. So, I couldn't get into Dental Hygiene for the following year. I was so upset I did some research on-line and found Crieghton in Nebraska has an on-line program where you go to Nebraska for a few weeks a year to do labs...and I found the UF Orlando campus.

So, I took Physics I and II and Organic I and II and Public Speaking.

As an added bonus, my Public Speaking was the funnest class ever. Very fun teacher and very, very fun students.

So, I owe my future happiness to the State of Florida Public Speaking requirement. (I have a prior Bachelor's from Massachusetts.🙂)

I can't tell you all the nightmares, weird dreams and panic attacks I had during the waiting game and in the 6 weeks between getting the invite for the interview and going...I think the nightmare of those six weeks was the worst, there is so much build up, really increases the stress hormones floating through the blood stream. I much rather would have had a week or so, just long anough to buy an interview outfit and revel in the excitement.
