oh, has everyone heard of the Pharmacy program at USF? They have decided to move it to the campus in Lakeland instead of Tampa. One of my coworker was really mad and confused about it this morning. He waited for so long and now they decide to move it.

The placement of the program in Lakeland was a contingency for getting the initial funding for the Pharmacy program....my guess is because they just started the polytechnic campus out in Lakeland a few years ago and this would be one way to increase the activity on that campus.....

They are going to start out with 50 students and continually increase up to a class of 300.....seems a bit excessive to me, but what do I know?

in conclusion, if you want to get rich, don't be a Pharmacist. You will have a hard time looking for a job in the next 5 years and also have to pay student loan.

Yeah there are no pharmacy schools in Miami, Nova is the closest about an hour away and PBA is 2 hours away. :-(

I went to the interview at LECOM on March 25th. They told me that the total cost (including housing, health insurance, transportation, tuition,...) would be about 44 000 a year. In addition, for every dollar we borrow from them now, we would have to pay back 3 dollars. I guess she meant if we pay mininum payments, we would end up paying 3 times more for interest. Therefore, after 4 years, and if I make minimun payments, I would end up paying almost 5 00 000 dollars. At this point, It sounds too much for me. What if I can't make it through 4 years? What do you guys think about it? Honestly, I need some advices, please.

Student loans are not forgiven through bankruptcy.......you are stuck with them no matter what happens......

Well, with this new student loan reform (not sure if it applies to us), any outstanding debt you have after 20 years will be erased and you will no longer be required to pay it.

I will be on a first-class flight out of Florida if I can't find a job right out of school. You're absolutely right when you say that the market isn't nearly as saturated outside of FL, so I will migrate to wherever the profession is in high demand! The carolinas would be awesome, didnt even think of there. I have family in Charlotte and I love it. It's beautiful and the cost of living is no where near that of FL.

Yes! Such a nice place to live... Good cost of living... Close to the ocean shore... Similar summers/spring... But also a mild fall and winter with snow and skiing in the mountains. Lol. Sounds pretty good to me.

My friend lives in Campus Edge and I really like it there. It is very close to campus (actually, I'm pretty sure it's considered on-campus) and the price is reasonable for the location. I really don't know of any other 1/1's but you should visit Apartment Hunters. They are a free service that helps u look for a place to stay and, if you decide to go with one of their recommendations, they make a profit from you signing with that complex. Nothing comes out of your pocket. They are located on University on the west side of 13th street. Hope this helps.

If you have any questions about the curriculum or student life at St. Pete I'll try to help you out. 2 things for all students: Start looking for a good deal on a laser printer, preferably double sided. I wish I would have bought a double sided one. No joke I've probably printed over 2000 sheets of paper so far. Newegg has frequent deals so I'd check them out occasionally.

Also, when you get your CPR certification, go through The American Heart Association. They offer a 2 year cert so you only have to do it twice while your in school and I think it costs the same as The Red Cross's 1 year cert.

If I think of anything else I'll post, but if ya have any questions let me know!

Try some places on Archer road so you are close to the hospital/HPNP...i live in Jefferson on 2nd Ave right now (near downtown) and it's nice but a 1/1 will probably be pretty expensive and also there's a lot of undergrads. I signed at a 2/2 at The Polos for next year for $538 (everything included) but I was recently looking for apartments...I looked at Oakbrook Walk, Gainesville Place (but heard some bad things about it), Greenwich Green, Campus Lodge, The Enclave, and Oxford Manor.

I went ahead and bought an HP laser printer, with 2-sided printing, 17 ppm, for ~$100. I thought that was a pretty good deal.. but who knows. Are we allowed any free prints at the library for being a student?

I was also trying to find places to live. Some people have recommended Beachway apartments. Are there any other places that you would suggest I look at?

I took my cues from the faculty I met at open house, dark suit, heels, any color shirt goes (but I would shy away from neons!!! Don't want them putting on their shades). If there is a color that flatters you more than blue or white, then go with that as long as it isn't too bold. Most everyone at my interview wore black suits, white shirts, the faculty wore more colors as did the 1PDs, so don't be afraid of some color.

As for hose, do what is comfortable and looks nice, I wore nude hose with a gray suit, but some fashionable have told me I should do black with black shoes...I know nothing of this stuff!!!

Some of the girls at my interview didn't wear a suit and wore a pretty blouse. I think professional dress for women is more difficult, since it is so variable!

I didn't interview at UF, but I wore a skirt suit with no hose. Is that bad? lol It was also 45 degrees outside so I guess heat wasn't an excuse. I brought a pant suit on the plane and ended up getting a skirt suit the night before at the mall so I didn't have hose. 😕

I wore a button up shirt, but it was more of a blouse because it had a more feminine cut rather than the flat fabric leading up to the button area. I did actually wear blue, but a spring blue, and a gray suit (meaning I stood out, everyone else was in black). Not sure than I wanted to stand out at that moment, but in retrospect, I got accepted so I guess I dressed appropriately! The MOST important thing aside from professional dress, is comfort. Do what you feel better in! That will help you shine!

The hose-no hose argument has been had many times on the board. As long as it wasn't noticable, I doubt it was a big deal!

Thanks... luckily I was accepted, but I was beginning to wonder if this was a fashion misstep or something since a few people have specifically mentioned hose. I am from an island so I pretty much know nothing about stockings and things like that. My suit was dark blue/black with a very small square pattern as the fabric so I just wore a white button down with a collar, but more than one girl there had on slacks with a colorful cardigan.

A lot of people live at Beachway. Some like it some don't. The walls are paper thin so your neighbors might complain about noise even if you aren't doing anything. One of my friends got a complaint for walking around in the afternoon. I guess it just depends on who ya live by. Some of my friends live at Costa del Sol which is pretty close to campus. I haven't heard any complaints. I'd check those places out. Anywhere you go, ask if there is a student discount. I think Beachway offers one. Also once summer rolls around and the class is filled, Kristi, the campus coordinator, would put everyone's name in an email lookin for an apartment to do roommate matching and such.

PS They don't have free prints and that's a good deal for the printer. That was about the going rate for a single sided one when we were all buying one. You'll be glad ya got a double sided one. It'll make your binder a lot more manageable!

I can't seem to find anything on the UF website about this so I can make a direct comparison. The tuition for UF is ~$16K....do they also allow for $20K in living expenses in the calculation of financial aid?

The following was included in my conditional acceptance email from UF, not sure if this answers your questions or not but hopefully it helps:

"Financial Aid
You can apply for federal financial aid for the 2010-2011 academic year by filling out the FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The University of Florida school code is 001535.

Federal financial aid regulations state that students who enter the College of Pharmacy with 90 or more undergraduate semester credits or a baccalaureate degree will be classified in the graduate-professional category; and, thus, are eligible for higher federal loans up to approximately $33,000 per year. Students with 89 or fewer semester credits will be classified in the undergraduate category for federal financial aid purposes; and, therefore, are eligible for Pell Grants and lesser federal loan amounts. So he told me to allocate around $600-$650 per month for 9 months for rent - since I signed a 12 month lease and I'm not sure if I'll have someone to sublease next summer, I went for a lease that is around $540 per month. He said in July we'll find out how much the budget will be for next year. Also, he told me the school will send us some more paperwork to fill out, I think.

I am hoping they gear it toward location, in Orlando, many are lucky to get an apartment for $650 at the low end, not many you can find under that range, so I would hope leaving expenses are figured differently for each campus.

Yes, about $300 less per semester. Distance campuses do not have to pay health(Shands) and transportation (Gville RTS) fees.

For those of you going to the St. Pete campus:

I lived at Beachway in 2007 and they are nicer for the area and close to the school. They have very little storage and the walls are thin. My biggest complaint was the location. You are kind of alienated on the west side of town. I have a lot of friends in Tampa so I chose to live closer to I-275. That ride on Park St got to be really annoying. I live in the Feather Sound area now and LOVE IT! I'm able to get around town, plus the beaches are still only 25 minutes away! I've lived a couple of other places so If you have any questions...please don't hesitate...I'll tell you this...DON"T LIVE AT ALUNA LARGO-looks are deceiving, rent is outrageous, and the walls are super-duper thin! My BIGGEST renting mistake ever! Also, try to stay away from South St. Pete too....not the best area if you know what I mean! Good luck!

I checked out Towne Parc but I didn't like the fact that the one bedroom apt on the second floor didn't have room for a dining room table. I did like the the complex though. It was on my short list.

Federal financial aid regulations state that students who enter the College of Pharmacy with 90 or more undergraduate semester credits or a baccalaureate degree will be classified in the graduate-professional category; and, thus, are eligible for higher federal loans up to approximately $33,000 per year. Students with 89 or fewer semester credits will be classified in the undergraduate category for federal financial aid purposes; and, therefore, are eligible for Pell Grants and lesser federal loan amounts. Florida Bright Future scholarships can be utilized in the PharmD program to the maximum of 132 undergraduate semester credit hours at the undergraduate tuition and fee rate, pending no future changes in state regulations by the State Legislature. Yeah that sounds about right. I got $23K offered because I live at home with no living expenses. One thing I have to stress that they kind of casually mention about having <90 credits, You will get like 8K per semester. One of my friends is working a lot to try to make up for the difference. Make sure all your credits transfer too. She thought she had 91 but a computer course didn't transfer and left her with 89. If you have less than 90 credits take some easy summer course to get above 90 credits unless you have enough money to cover the difference without loans.

I graduated with my BS so I should be OK for full loan eligibility, right? (I took over 125 credits)

yea I know what u mean about the no true spot for a dining table. In my current house I have a table, but I shamefully admit it never gets used. I always eat off of the coffee table in my living room watching tv.

When I study, I tend to want to take up a space like a dining table...my desk usually has way too many things on it to get really comfortable. Plus, the other apartments I looked at has bigger common areas, so I won't feel cramped. I really did consider Towne Parc, it had a nice homey feel to it.🙂

Ditto! Good luck! Just relax and don't be nervous (I know, you are thinking ya right, easy for me to say, but this is what everyone said to me!).

It is quick and mostly painless, and everyone that I know that has interviewed has survived to tell the tale! =) But not too much since you sign a privacy waiver!
