UF c/o 2014... It Begins!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey everyone! I have my interview next Friday at the Gainesville campus and am just wondering if anyone knows whether its an open or closed file interview?

I also saw this in the pharmCAS school directory for UF's 2009 interview stats and was quite shocked.... could this really be true?

STATISTICS
• Estimated number interviewed for fall 2009 Entering Class:330
• Estimated number accepted:320

Has anyone with an interview been turned down already? Thanks guys 😉

Closed file. Yes, those numbers are accurate (I doubt Pharmcas would make those up). But who knows...

Everyone that I have spoken with that interviewed got in, and heard back in less than a week (not everyone heard back so quickly, however).

Here is a deal of deals:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16828112191

$59.99 + $2.99 shipping for a laser printer. No sales tax to FL. It is not automatic double sided, but you can manually print one side and then the other. I am not sure if it includes the ink cartridge. The cartridge costs $66.99 (which is typical for laser cartridges.)

It probably does include one cartridge, but I am not sure. One cartridge is good for approximately 2,500 pages. Sale ends 4/19/2010

That is a sick deal if it comes with a cartridge. I just paid $130 for an HP manual dbl-sided laser printer and really considering returning it for this one (if the cartridge is included). Thanks for the link!

I have had an hp lazerjet 1020 for 4 years and it still works beautifully. Its $150 but the toner is only $20 online which saves you a lot over time.

I never heard of a $20 laser cartridge. Does it get roughly 2,500 pages?

Also, on the one I showed the link for, I am pretty confident that it does include the cartridge. I think they always do, but someone can call the manufacturer to be sure. I already need one, so I am not going to call. You can also call Newegg and they will tell you what they know.

I emailed an ebay seller selling the same printer new in the box, sealed, and they said it comes with a starter toner so I'm assuming it's the same for Newegg. I'm gonna call just to make sure.

EDIT: Update- Called Samsung, printer comes with a starter toner (about half the capacity of a regular toner)

Not much posting on Orlando interview day...perhaps because there were only 16 people...1 cancelled and 2 were no shows. Who does that? Out of staters? But they only accept about 6 out of staters, so I am dumbfounded.

Anyway, good news for the folks that haven't gotten interviews yet. This is not official as it doesn't come from UF staff, it comes from a 1PD, but she said that they will be adding an interview day in Orlando in May. 21 were interviewed on March 19th + 13 today = 34. They have to get it up to 50.

Not sure why they interviewed so few, if they didn't find enough "good" people, or if they just got behind on reviewing applicaitons? Seems like plenty of people with good stats haven't heard yet.

Anyone accepted needs to get CPR certified. You can have it good for 1 year or 2 years. Obviously 2 years is the way to go so you only have to do it twice. A 1PD said that someone will come out to the Orlando campus and charge us $25 each for the 2 year certification if we can get 8 people. The 1PD said that someone had posted info on the Orlando facebook page, but I didn't see it there.

I told the people who interviewed in Orlando today about the "University of Florida Orlando Pharmacy class of 2014" facebook page to help get the word out about the facebook page, most of the members are 1PD's and 2PD's.

They have at least five from the first interview date in Gainsville. And I thought there was more on the 19th...maybe I was wrong, I didn't pay much attention to anything except get through that interview.

Anyone else having issues obtaining their medical records for immunization forms? I haven't seen a doctor in years and my pediatrician is giving me the run-around. Do we need any updated vaccinations or tests done or should our records suffice (I know this is a variable topic, but just curious)?

My pediatrician didn't keep records from that far back, and my mom hasn't had a chance to look for them (it is doubtful she ever will), so I am going to get shots for the ones I don't have, and titers to prove the ones I do have. I know that most people my age don't have the Hep B, it wasn't required then.

Didn't even think of titers. Good call! I'm 23, so I'm hoping my pediatrician still has records in storage (as mentioned to me by the secretary). Oh well, if all else fails, at least I know there are options. Thanks.

I believe the first interview date UF did at Gainesville included applicants for the distance campuses as well. Anyways, I'm interested in the two year CPR thing so count me in.

I am planning on doing it once we at least get 8 people on the UFCOP - Orlando page. I am thinking one in May and one in June, I will set up two. I was trying to get people's locations on the Facebook page to find a good central location, but no one responded.

Regarding vaccines and titres...whatever those are...I know that Seminole county will give free vaccines to children. When I lived in Denver, I got free Hep B vaccine as an adult from the city (I had to pose as an intravenous drug user in order to qualify.) The county is very, very busy just before school starts since all the school children (hey, aren't UFCOP people school children too?) who wait until the last minute to get their vaccines show up. If you have to pay for the Hep B vaccine, I think it costs about $150...that is what they told me in Denver.

About immunizations... When I started my masters degree I just called up the health center at my undergrad and they faxed over the info to the new school... Not sure if UF's main campus keeps your info but if they do then you might be able to have them handle it

I'm gonna call UF tomorrow and see if that can be done.

Good luck to all of you with interviews tomorrow in St. Pete!! Looking forward to seeing you in the fall 🙂

Has anyone for the Gainesville interview this Friday received the second email they said we were suppose to get?! I am scared I may have deleted it ...

Check out your local Florida Dept of Health. My pediatrician retired and my mom passed away. She had all my stuff filed somewhere but the DOH had everything.

Would you suggest a color laser printer or a monochrome one?

If the color printer and cartridges aren't much more expensive it would be nice to have but isn't necessary. There aren't too many professors' powerpoint slides that have colors that would be worth spending a lot of extra money. Everyone I know of has a B&W printer.

I didn't get the other email yet but I'm not worried, we will get it. Check your spam just in case because someone on this forum said that the second email went to his spam folder.😉

Yeah, I still haven't gotten the second email yet. Hopefully they'll be sending them out soon.

goodness!! i didn't expect to be so nervous for the interview in st. pete tomorrow but here i am.. 930 pm scrolling through sd.net with butterflies!! cannot WAIT to get to the interview tomorrow and see what this campus is all about!! 😀

has anyone heard anything else about the smartphone requirement in addition to the posts previously mentioned? my contract is up with verizon and am contemplating about switching over to at&t if needed..

Don't worry. You will be fine! Just relax and be yourself.

About the smart phone requirement, all I know is what has been previously mentioned: iphone or ipod touch is required. However, the technological requirements have not yet been released so no one is really sure wha/t is going to be required.

I'm in the same position as you are. My contract expired this month so I am eligible for an upgrade, or I can switch providers. I keep hearing that the iPhone will be coming out for Verizon in July, but this all purely speculation. Nothing is for sure. Honestly, I will never leave Verizon because of their exceptional coverage/service. They are far better than any other provider. If I were you, I'd wait until June or July before changing to AT&T. That way you can allow enough time for the requirements to be posted as well as seeing if Verizon comes out with the iPhone.

We will not know what the technology requirements are till the end of May unfortunately. Unfortunately, my verizon contract does not expire till December. So I am not too sure what I am going. But if I had to choose I would rather have the iPhone than the iPod touch...cause I would have to carry both and a phone and the iPod.

I didn't think of that. Fingers crossed that would work.:xf: I am not a fan of being poked with needles, so I would LOVE for them to be able to help me.

Do you know if the DOH charges a fee for retrieving such documentation? My pediatrician is charging me $25 to pull the records from storage.

thanks! yeah i keep hearing rumours for verizon's iphone as well.. oh well we'll see what happens.

I don't remember paying for anything since it's all online. They just give you a print out. If there was a fee it wasn't much. I don't completely remember because I got shots while I was there and had to pay for those.

Someone was saying that they wanted to buy a Mac, but since UFCOP tech support won't support a Mac, they probably won't get one. At my interview in Orlando on 4/9/10 I asked the current students about computer requirements and I was told that the only support they give is for the very few particular programs that UF has us use to watch lectures and that sort of thing.

Some students have Mac's and they love them and they haven't had problems with them. UF's tech support will not help us with viruses or anything else on a non-Mac, only if the UF software is not working, so there is really not much value to the help that UF's tech support will give us. If you are having a problem with your Mac, you can ask a 2PD, 3PD, or 4PD for help with it.

My advice is, if you want a Mac, get a Mac.

I also asked if we need as "good" of a computer as it says on the website (last year's requirements.) I was told, all we need is a computer which is capable of playing a video and the most basic of websurfing or Word, and a webcam (you can get a USB external webcam). At orientation, the only thing they do is make sure that our computers are encrypted. They don't check your computer's specificaitons at all.

You can get a free encryption program from www.truecrypt.org

All of the students do not see any need for us to encrypt our computers since we really don't have anything sensitive on them.

The encryption software slows your computer down a little bit (and makes it take a LONG time to boot up...turn on your computer and go get a cup of coffee kind of long time.) Some of the students have uninstalled it after the first few days after orientation, most of the students just deal with it. After orientation, they never check your computer again.

If you want an iPhone on Verizon, chances are very good that they won't be out by end of August. You can get a used 1st Generation iTouch on EBay for about $100. The ONLY thing we use it for is for taking quizzes. Multiple choice, about 5 questions. We have 10 seconds to answer each question and all of the iTouch / iPhones sync up to the program giving the live quiz. The most basic (1st generation, 8 gig) iTouch is fine for our needs.

Then, if/when Verizon ever comes out with the iPhone, you can get it and sell your iTouch on E-Bay for very close to what you paid for it (a little more than you paid if you are lucky.)

If your Verizon contract is up now and you qualify for a phone upgrade, I would wait and see what happens. A couple of weeks ago, I saw on the 11:00 pm news that Verizon was going to start producing the phones in September and they would be selling them in Jan 2011. I just checked the internet and there is no definitive information at all...makes me wonder if I can trust the news story...but if I can't trust that, what can I trust?

Yeah I already have an iPod touch so I'm not too worried. But I did exactly that... bought it on ebay and plan to sell it back when I get an iPhone (if it ever comes out for Verion)

Sad how you really can't believe what you hear on the news anymore, isn't it?

First year all we need it for is quizzes. Second year, we will need to download drug information apps including epocrates, and I think the 1PDs mentioned another required program second year, but I don't remember the name of that one.

As for Verizon, they will neither confirm or deny the Apple thoughts. Which is semi smart for business. I am at 8 months before my contract is set to renew, and they keep sending me flyers to renew early. My thought is they are trying to get people to renew early, then when the iPhone comes out they can get even more money out of me! We shall see!

Four more days until interview in Gainesville. I'm getting just a little nervous.😱 I hope everyone who had interviews today did well and will be accepted! The waiting for me is almost over. I am still waiting for the email that is supposed to be here this week (before interviews). Did anyone else get that email that have April 26th in Gainesville ?

Im guessing you meant April 16th and not April 26th, but No i have not received that email and have an interview this friday at the Gainesville campus. I am right there with you with the nerves! My only other interview before this one has been NOVA and I thought the interviewers were really pretty mean/nasty😡 so im hoping UF's interview will go much better!

I'm sorry to hear about your Nova interviewers. Mine were really nice. I guess it's just luck of the draw. Did you interview at Ft. Lauderdale? My UF interviewers were really nice too. But again, that doesn't necessarily mean the same will hold true for everyone. Either way, best of luck to both of you!

Good luck to everyone! Catie867, I'm sorry to hear about your interviewers at Nova also. The interviewers I had at UF were absolutely wonderful! I hope you have a much better experience with them!

Three more days and we are still email less lol! Start to get nervous.... I guess I will email Penny after 4ish if we still have nothing... keep me posted if you get it!! ahhhh

I would probably call her. I had my interview last Friday and last Tuesday I STILL hadn't received my 2nd e-mail. Then Tuesday evening I got an e-mail that said if you still haven't called to set up your interview time to make sure that you called by Wednesday at the absolute latest. So I actually called to set up the exact time. I think it's because I received my interview invite a lot later than some people, so by the time I got my invite, most people had already received the 2nd e-mail.

Oh yes, I meant April 16th. This will be my first interview so I hope it goes well. I am so nervous about questions that they will ask. I hope it will be fine, I have heard that the interviewers were nice.

People that interviewed at Jacksonville recently, keep us updated. I was told that we would find out in "the next 3 to 4 weeks." I interpret this as any time between now and 3 to 4 weeks, but everyone on here has been finding out in less than a week. Has anyone actually had to wait this long?

I went through this thread, and this is what I determined:

Interview Dates/Conditional Acceptance E-mail Dates

Friday Jan 29/Friday Feb 5
Wed March 3/Wed March 10
Friday March 19/Wed March 24 & 25
Monday March 22/Friday March 26

I did this rather quickly, so it may not be perfect, but it should be rather accurate. Unless I missed something, the MOST time that has passed between interviews dates and acceptance e-mail dates has been one week. I am hoping and praying ours will not take any longer than the rest have!

The most I have heard is a week. Mine was five days later including the weekend. There were two sites with interviews last friday so it might take a little longer since there are two times as many to send.

For those who had interview at Jacksonville on april 9th, please tell your experience.

The e-mail I received which originally offered me an interview said the following:

"After the interview is completed an evaluation will be shared with the Admissions Committee. The Admissions Committee will make a decision, and a letter will be sent to you by email within two to three weeks of the interview to inform you about your status. Please make sure that you watch for any emails sent from an account ending in cop.ufl.edu or ufl.edu. We will be corresponding with you by email with important information."

That being said, from everyone in this forum's comments, we should hear within one week. Keep in mind that the committee meets every Tuesday and Thursday...not that that really matters since people tend to hear on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Someone pointed out that each conditional acceptance e-mail must be uniquely made since everyone has different outstanding issues.
