Someone was saying that they wanted to buy a Mac, but since UFCOP tech support won't support a Mac, they probably won't get one. At my interview in Orlando on 4/9/10 I asked the current students about computer requirements and I was told that the only support they give is for the very few particular programs that UF has us use to watch lectures and that sort of thing.
Some students have Mac's and they love them and they haven't had problems with them. UF's tech support will not help us with viruses or anything else on a non-Mac, only if the UF software is not working, so there is really not much value to the help that UF's tech support will give us. If you are having a problem with your Mac, you can ask a 2PD, 3PD, or 4PD for help with it.
My advice is, if you want a Mac, get a Mac.
I also asked if we need as "good" of a computer as it says on the website (last year's requirements.) I was told, all we need is a computer which is capable of playing a video and the most basic of websurfing or Word, and a webcam (you can get a USB external webcam). At orientation, the only thing they do is make sure that our computers are encrypted. They don't check your computer's specificaitons at all.
You can get a free encryption program from
www.truecrypt.org
All of the students do not see any need for us to encrypt our computers since we really don't have anything sensitive on them.
The encryption software slows your computer down a little bit (and makes it take a LONG time to boot up...turn on your computer and go get a cup of coffee kind of long time.) Some of the students have uninstalled it after the first few days after orientation, most of the students just deal with it. After orientation, they never check your computer again.
