I am applying to UF and was curious about their requirement for Nutrition. It states you need animal nutrition but does anyone know if just Nutrition would be acceptable? Or does anyone know who I should contact to check? Thank you!!🙂

I'm almost 99.9% sure that it has to be animal nutrition.

Its possible that they allow you to take animal nutrition via distance education over the summer (after you've been accepted) but i'm not sure about that (i went to UF so i took it here ;-)). i know for a fact that they allow you to take intro to animal sciences over the summer, if you come from a different school that didnt offer it (or even if you came from UF, i think) but you might want to check about nutrition. your best bet would be to email Tonie Henry. Good Luck!

forgot to add: you can call Tonie (but i dont know that number off the top of my head) i'm pretty sure her email is [email protected]

Purdue offers one that's online and self-paced that can be started at anytime for people who don't otherwise have access to an animal nutrition course. It's working out pretty well so far. That said, I take the first exam Monday so we'll see!

I checked today with one of my friends who came from a different university, and yes, animal nutrition is one of those you can take over the summer if you can't take it at your school. so is animal sciences.

good luck!

I would check with UF prior to taking any online or correspondence courses. At some point during the application process last year, I remember reading a list from UF regarding which Animal Nutrition online or correspondence courses were acceptable to them. I believe there were 3 or 4 on the list. Definitely check before doing anything online or correspondence. Also, I believe they offer you the opportunity to take the course at UF during the summer. Good Luck

It is usually safe to say that UF requires anything that makes your life difficult!
I know.. from experience in undergrad! 😛

Thanks soooo much for the replies. I emailed Tonie and hopefully everything works out. I really have to fit this course in during the semester since I will be out of the country all summer.

-About the Purdue course, keep me posted about the class because I'm leaning towards that possibility.

Sure thing. Nobody is making me take the exam Monday, I just needed to impose bootcamp on myself to force myself to finish that unit so I would have 1 month for unit 2 and 1 month for unit 3 so I can be done in December. Purdue lets you start whenever you want and finish whenever you want. I know for my purposes vet schools will be looking for the transcript from it in early Jan. Also, I REALLY don't want to take any classes in the spring - I want to enjoy the break before vet school *hopefully* starts in the fall.

Okay, now I'm not sure if I have met the animal science requirement. I have currently taken an Intro to Horse Science and two semesters of Animal Anatomy and Physiology, and Animal Genetics. Does anyone know if this would count?? Thanks again!

I had the same problem with fitting these in as I am employyed full time with 2 part time jobs 🙂 Oklahoma State University also 'teaches' these 2 pre-req requirements, self-study/online. The cost with books for the two courses is ~ $1100. Hope this helps.

I think at a lot of schools that would not count. Intro to animal science courses are usually food animal plus a little equine, and it's not all A&P/genetics. If you want to be sure, call up the school(s) you're interested in.

Took the first animal nutrition exam last week. I thought it was pretty easy and my score reflected that. I'm now working on unit 2... So far I have to give the course a thumbs up for online stuff. I'd still rather have the class in person, as the way the online stuff is presented is sort of akin to sleeping through the lectures and printing out/learning from the handout notes. Not bad, but I wouldn't want to do it for more than just this course.
