As someone on the IS waitlist, I am inclined to give dubious advice hahaha (all jokes)
I’m not familiar with any of those places so I can’t be much help there.Thank you everyone for your input on housing!
Does anyone have experience/heard anything about the following apartments:
1.) The Mayfair
2.) The Marlow
3.) Aslander
4.) Anthem House
5.) Mirabella
6.) Mount Vernon
Also how much is it for a parking pass?
I've never lived in any of those places, but I did tour Alsander and I really liked it, it was just out my price range. I made a pros and cons list of apartments (includes price, distance to vet school, utilities, parking, etc), and Mirabella was on there. On my document, I have that it comes unfurnished, has a W/D, but no internet. I'd recommend looking at what each of those places has to offer and make a pros and cons list with information! It's easier to compare apartments when you have all the information for each of them right in front of you. And you're also doing the right thing by asking around to hear personal statements from people who have actually lived there. If you're coming in March for preview day I def recommend actually vising some of the places on your list and touring! The floorplans on a lot of the websites for apartments here sometimes make them look nicer than they actually are lol. Good luck!Thank you everyone for your input on housing!

You got a lot of replies about the parking situation so I won’t add much on that other than I can agree that the main reason is just not enough spots for the volume of people who drive to campus every day. I also saw someone had mentioned that it rains a lot here, however I walk to/from school every day and so far I have only had to walk in rain (like rain rain) once since starting in August. It’s definitely something to consider but I don’t want that to deter you from choosing to walk or bike!Current veterinary students!! Can you please list some apartment complexes that current students live at and any recommendations you have.
Is the parking situation bad because of the cost of parking passes or lack of availability or due to traffic? Any input is appreciated!

I also didn’t take anatomy in undergrad, and my advice to everyone is do NOT start trying to study for anatomy before classes start!!!! I promise you will not be studying anywhere near the level of detail needed, and the class moves so quickly that even if you do prepare in detail for, say, the forelimb, that’ll only get you through maybe the first two weeks. I found trying to memorize origins/insertions etc. in a void to be completely pointless- you truly need an actual cadaver in front of you to provide context. I wouldn’t even bother with an anatomy coloring book unless you truly just find coloring relaxing. Spend this time before school starts by relaxing your brain and making sure your life is in order- you have so much time you’ll be spending studying next year, enjoy this time while you have it!anyone thats currently enrolled, i did not take anatomy in undergrad, so I was just wondering if there is anything in particular that you recommend I get familiar with before school starts so that I don't have such a hard time ? i bought an anatomy coloring book and am going to start doing that but any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I did very well in anatomy with no prior experience, and my best way to study was to pull out a cadaver (use a different one every time! Sure, you know where the structures are already on *your* dog, but your dog will only be used for maybe one question on the practical exam- get used to identifying structures in different dogs!!) and physically touch a structure and make myself identify it and go through the origins etc. If you don’t know something, don’t just look at the answer and go “oh yeah, I got it now” and then move on, instead go back to it a few minutes later and see if you still know it spontaneously. Recognition =/= recall, and you want to make sure you’re focusing on your recall. For me, high-yield studying looked like constantly quizzing myself and being honest with myself about whether I actually knew something or not. Passive learning like rewatching dissection videos or reading the textbook is not going to get you as far as active learning.
If UF is your dream school then I’d probably commit somewhere else now and possibly eat the deposit later. What’s that deposit money in the grand scheme of things, you know? I’ve been looking around housing options in the area and most places don’t even know their availability until 60 days out from the move-in date, so I think you’ll be alright for housing. Lots of private owners list their properties way closer to the move in date too. I do have to say, I’d strongly consider going to your cheapest option. Anywhere accredited will give you the education you need, so I’d save myself the extra debt.Waitlisted OOS. UF is my top choice but I have other acceptances. Do you know anyone who has committed to a seat and then gotten off a waitlist after the decision deadline in April? Wondering if I should commit somewhere and then just eat the deposit money if I get into UF later. Only thing about waiting is also waiting to find housing wherever I go.
In my opinion, there’s no need to commit anywhere until close to April 15. Committing early has no benefits in the eyes of the school. They don’t give you a gold star for being the first to commit or anything. They won’t take your seat away. It looks like UF has historically started calling people off the waitlist prior to the deadline, so if you know 100% you would go to UF over your other acceptance, I’d try to wait it out as close to the deadline as you could to see if UF will call before you absolutely have to pay money to another school. The poster above me is right that just losing the deposit isn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things and it would be fine to commit to your acceptance now and lose the deposit of UF calls, but why waste that money if you don’t have to. I know waiting is hard but I would just sit tight and not pay anything until much closer to the deadline.Waitlisted OOS. UF is my top choice but I have other acceptances. They will have you email your vaccine records to the CVM nurse shortly before classes start.Does anyone know where the instructions or anything about getting the rabies vaccine? Because i havent gotten any emails or info about it and people on facebook have already gotten them and i havent anxiety?? Lol
Students may get a slight discount but it wasn’t a lot. I think I got maybe 10% off as an employee? The drug companies will give you free flea/tick/hw meds and we got lots of treats and shampoos and supplementy things too, so you do get a fair amount for free but if there’s an actual illness you’ll have to pay. Insurance for a pet that’s already 11 may be pricey/not worth it, you’d just have to shop policies and see how much they’re gonna charge you. Honestly, I tended to use private GP and specialty clinics more than you’d expect. Having a pet seen at a VTH is a process and appointments take forever. I could do drop offs and care was usually even slightly cheaper at a local practice. I used the VTH for some things but definitely not all.For current students: I will be bringing my 11yr f/s soul cat with me to school. Does the school give student discounts for the hospital? Or is it worth getting insurance for her prior? (Since ive worked at clinics for the last 5 years ive just relied on the employee discounts hence the no insurance, but shes getting older...you know?)
Pretty sure business casualDoes anyone know what we should wear to preview days? Is it business casual?
We get a 10% flat discount….. Pet insurance may be worth it. Thank you both! I might shop around for some just to be on the safe side <3We get a 10% flat discount….. Pet insurance may be worth it. I work part time at a local hospital that provides me with highly discounted pet care.
I will say the cardiology department gives students a giant student discount (my dog got an echo and eval for $80!) but most other departments stick to the 10% including primary care.
I just toured Ridgemar Commons yesterday! I liked the location, amenities, room size etc. What are you looking for in an apartment specifically? Ridgemar Commons has a pool, gym, it's pretty close to the main shopping center on Archer, free parking, the office staff seems super nice. I took some videos of the 2x2 that I can send to you.Currently looking into apartments, so far i have narrowed the search down to Ridgemar Commons, The Laurels, Boardwalk, the earl and Park Avenue, does anyone know any of these communities, opinions??
Oh yes that would be great!! Pls send them! Im looking for a safe, quiet 2x2 for my pets and gf!I just toured Ridgemar Commons yesterday! Im pretty sure there is a schedule ! Just waiting on their email with more infoDoes anyone know what preview day will be like? Will we have a schedule to follow or will it be more like, come anytime and walk around the hospitals?
My daughter and I got airfare (from PA) for 3/13, hoping for her to attend 3/14 (and was assuming each day was the same info). Now we just need a rental car and hotel- sigh!I hope they send email tomorrow because airfare prices going up everyday 🫠
I’ve really enjoyed my time at UF, although I’ll always recommend going to your cheapest option (there’s no opportunity or special thing about any school that’s worth extra tens of thousands!). Happy to answer any specific questions you may have 🙂Hi! I am super excited to be accepted into UF vet class of 2029! I also was fortunate enough to have been accepted into some others, and have been trying to get as much info as possible before making a decision. I was wondering if any current vet students would be willing to set up a zoom call to answer questions, or give your honest opinion of your experience below? Thank you in advance for your help!
When you log into your application portal, there should be a button where you can find your UFID under "forms". However, it might just be there for me since I go to UF for undergrad, so if you can't locate it, I would recommend calling or emailing them!Hey guys! I’m accepting my offer from UF but am unsure of where to find my UFID. Do I need to create one or should I leave that blank for now because one will be provided later?
It’s normal for right near campus, unfortunately. We pay $1200 for a place 10m away as I can’t reconcile spending that much on housing.Really struggling with housing as it seems every place that is somewhat decent is around $1600 - $1800. Is this normal for Gainesville? I know many people have recommended staying within walking distance but there aren’t many decent apartments near the vet school 🙁
A lot of people get roommates, and if you're living with 3 other people you can probably pay around $600/mo. I know a lot of students live 20 minutes away, closer to I-75 around SW 62nd Blvd. Living next to the vet school is nice but it isn't a necessity. You could also look into renting a house, although I'm not sure how utilities compare to living in an apartment. There are 1br apartments that go for around $1050-1200 in the area too, but it's gonna be hard to find a 2 bedroom under $1400.Really struggling with housing as it seems every place that is somewhat decent is around $1600 - $1800. I am looking for a 1 bedroom and not splitting rent with anyone. All apartments that have no reports of mold, roaches, break ins, SA, etc. appear to be around $1600-$1800. The ones I’ve seen nearby all have some scary reviews (not looking at google since reviews can be deleted) except the Bartram, which is way too expensive. Very discouraging.A lot of people get roommates, and if you're living with 3 other people you can probably pay around $600/mo. Not sure if your IS or OOS, but you'd be hard pressed to find a living situation in FL that hasn't seen a roach or mold at some point. Obviously rampant mold is a bigger concern, but roaches show up even in the cleanest places. There's a different between 'seeing roaches' and having an infestation, though, so important to distinguish.I am looking for a 1 bedroom and not splitting rent with anyone. Always take apartment reviews with a grain of salt, but also look for common themes! For example, if one person in 30 reviews mentions a roach problem, then it was likely just a thing with only their apartment that could be fairly easily dealt with. But if almost every single review mentions a roach problem and maintenance/pest control not doing anything about it, it's probably not a great place to live. When I moved into my current apartment in August, my roommate and I saw roaches pretty frequently, so we got pest control through the apartment for free (which a lot of apartments have) and we haven't seen a single roach since!I always take apartment reviews with a grain of salt…almost all apartments suck in some capacity or another and unhappy tenants are far more likely to leave reviews than happy ones.
