I was wondering if anybody knew of a good place to look in order to find houses to rent that are close to the vet school. I am strictly looking for a house because I am tired of the apartment life and want peace and quiet. Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated.

Hi, I did undergrad at UF and have lived off campus all four years. All of the city is pretty safe, but I would stay away from anything off of SW 34th St. It's not a bad place but it has been known to be kind of "sketchy". There really isn't anything right next to the vet school because it backs up against the BTU/STU and a bunch of apartment complexes. Houses near the corner of 13th St. and SE Williston Rd. are very close, along with Williston and 23rd Ave. I live on the northwest corner of town by the mall on Newberry Road and it takes me 15 minutes to get to the vet school when traffic is light, 34th street tends to back up during rush hour pretty heavily. Most of the houses you'll find are on the north side of campus between University Ave. and "something NW Ave." or between NW 13th St. and NW 43rd (It's all gridded out pretty simply, look on Google maps and you'll be able to find the streets I'm talking about lol). That block north of university ave. is where a lot of students live so there are tons of houses for sale/rent all the time. They're older but a lot have been redone. They're also all within walking distance to the main part of campus and the stadium and tons of restaurants and coffee shops and whatever else you could need. The bus system on campus and through the city is pretty awesome most of the time so you can catch a bus on university and take it to the VA (across the street from the vet school) or take the North/South connector from the stadium. I think that's about the general spiel on Gainesville. I'm not sure where all the vet students live or if they all live close to each other since I'm not going there, but if you have any other questions just ask!

I am not in vet school at UF, but I live in Gainesville. There are a lot of nice houses and duplexes in the duckpond area, which is NE Gainesville. The neighborhood is beautiful and quiet with lots of parks and really cute historical houses.

Personally, I love the area. I hate the overdeveloped chain areas around Archer Road, and around downtown, there are lots of independent stores and restaurants nearby.

Driving time to the vet school from here is around 10-15 minutes. Traffic can get heavy at the 13th and University intersection, but there are side streets you can cut through to avoid it.

Some of the houses around University and 34th street are pretty cute as well.

I have lived in gainesville for the past 8 years.
Property Management to be weary of: Trimark Properties--> THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF

Area to be careful of : anywhere that says SE, or NE Gainesville not all of these areas are bad, but I wouldn't feel safe sleeping in certain parts

Houses right near campus in the NW section are definitely going to go for around $1-1.50 a sq foot. Since the veterinary school is off Archer road you may be able to find some great things that are cheaper off Williston road. Your best bet if you want a home is to try to rent something in the summer. Most houses go up for rent and just have a sign right out front that you find driving by. They will go up for rent usually at the end of the semesters and get snagged up. My advice would be to find somewhere to live during the break between the A and B summer semesters at UF. You can find that week on their website under class schedules. Usually the students are out of town and it is easy to see homes without an issue. Apartments are a dime a dozen. This town is catered to students with pets so finding a place to live is NEVER difficult so don't worry! I would like someone else mentioned stay within the block of 34th street and Main street...and NW 16th Ave and Williston Rd. Anywhere in that sector will be close enough to the vet school with tons of bus routes if you need them. GOOD LUCK! I am leaving the ville.......sad because i love this town.
