Hi guys! I am very excited to be accepting my IS admission spot. I am graduating this semester from UF undergrad but I would love to meet some other people going in/ find roommates! PM me!

Hi, I tried calling the admissions office to inquire about packet reviews and was sent to voicemail. I think I will also go ahead and try sending an email. I will let you guys know if I get any info on that, please let me know if you hear anything in regards to setting up packet reviews!

I've been seeing a lot elsewhere about the bus system going to or from UF. Does anyone have any experience?

Undergrad at UF here, I took the bus to campus my sophomore and junior year, it isn't bad, you can use the app to track the busses and their routes, but it can be finicky sometimes. If the busses are full, they'll pass you, and it also means getting to campus earlier than you'd like because some busses only come every 30-60 min, so it's either get to class early or late. Last year I decided to get an e-scooter for $200 and I use it to get to class now, so that's also an option depending on how close you live.

Also UF undergrad. The name of the app is "NaviGator for Gainesville RTS" (funny). I'd first check the routes out in the RTS website as it's a little easier to understand there, however, the app shows you a map of all the bus routes in the area, as well as the stops and schedule. I don't fully trust the bus schedule as sometimes busses lag behind schedule - so what's nice is you get a real time track on where the busses are on their route using the app. I've had no issue getting to campus from my apartment with it, but I also sometimes just take my bike. There's also a bus that takes you to the animal science building (right next to the vet school).

I got ahold of someone. They will do packet reviews if you're declined. If you are waitlisted, you have to wait to be declined.

Oh wow. I do not love that. I am grateful to be on the waitlist but I am trying to be realistic about this and I feel like waitlists technically can go on until classes start, which would leave me virtually no time to make any improvements before applications are due again. Hell, I already feel like I don’t have enough time to make big improvements.

This is insane but I just got accepted into Georgia as well. Can someone just reaffirm that I would be an idiot to deny in state tuition from florida.

I would never recommend going to a more expensive school unless you have money / family with money to pay it. Remember it’s not just the extra tuition, it’s the extra interest, and extra interest on the interest in the end.

Congrats though!!!

Congrats! I just got waitlisted from there. I highly recommend going wherever is cheaper, unless Georgia has something to offer that's super important to you that you can't get at UF

Again, go for the less expensive tuition IMO.
My uncle is a small exotics vet who attended UGA (many years ago to be fair). He loved his experience there. UGA has an excellent zoo med service. Regardless of what school you go to much of your experience with exotics will be through extracurricular activities / chosen electives. I can say during didactics we had a total of maybe 1-2 lectures on exotics at UF in total. As @olivecantaloupe mentioned the school also has programs with state organizations.

The email made it seem like they wanted the class to be finalized by decision day instead of waiting till decision day to start pulling from waitlists

May be a bit personal but as I’m looking for housing I’m starting to stress about actually PAYING for off campus housing. My partner and I have been together for 5, almost 6 years so we will be moving in together. I think it’s a lot of stress having to pay rent + utilities on his own, but I don’t think working while in vet school is an option for me. How is everyone affording housing? I’m assuming loans help but what loans have you all applied to that allowed you to use the money for rent and etc?

Even if they did think a class was finalized and all seats had been accepted prior to April 15, it’s still possible for there to be movement. Someone who accepted a seat initially and paid a deposit prior to April 15 could potentially get called off a waitlist they wanted more than UF, freeing up another seat. They’d lose their deposit, but it happens. And people have until April 15 to decide on the initial offers, so people shouldn’t feel pressured to make a hasty decision. Once you’re sure, by all means let the school know so they can offer your seat to someone else if you’re declining, but don’t feel rushed to make a decision either.

The direct unsubsidized and grad plus loans you’ll get awarded through FAFSA can be used for any expenses you have relating to school and living expenses. That’s part of the school’s estimated total cost of attendance. They’ll deposit however much money you say you need (up to the amount the school says is the max allowable) into your bank account and you can use it for whatever.

Housing in Gainesville isn’t awful for Florida. I will say the closer you are to campus the more expensive it’ll be. My husband pays most of the bills bless him, but I still take out cost of living loans to help pay bills. I have multiple classmates who live on their own, even, and they can still afford it this way.

Also I work a part time job at a local hospital when I have time and I have many classmates who do the same!

In the acceptance email, we were told to email our acceptance/matriculation forms to Jarron Papale, but the actual forms say to send them to admissions email. @katiemcat do you know which one to do, or should I just send the forms to both emails?

I have no idea, sorry. I would probably send to both.

Hey everyone! I'm looking for housing recommendations for next year!!! I am open to anything- an apartment, condo, or townhome/house. One thing I am looking for is somewhere that has electric car chargers because I have a hybrid, and somewhere that is walking/biking to campus because it is sounding like parking is bad, lol! Also, do we know if a class of 2029 page has been made yet? I am so excited to meet future classmates! Go gators!

Thank you. I am focused now on walking/ biking distance to school for him. Seems like some decent options.
Like @flsheltermed said, I also live at the Bartram! My favorite part about living here is that I can walk to/from school every day and never have to fight for parking/pay for a parking pass. If you have any questions about the complex itself, I'd be happy to help!

Unsure about the housing but I saw on FB that a group is normally made around April by the previous class webmaster (so class if 2028)

For those who got waitlisted, do you plan on attending the DVM preview in March?

Also, for previous reapplicants, do y'all have any advice for those of us who plan on submitting their next VMCAS within the next 7 months? Should I wait for the following cycle after instead?

Have you gotten a response back from them/confirmation that they got your forms yet? I just sent mine last night so I don't expect a response soon lol but I'm just trying to see how long to wait before reaching out to confirm they got the forms.

Even if they did think a class was finalized and all seats had been accepted prior to April 15, it’s still possible for there to be movement.
Absolutely. Waitlists are crazy because it only takes one person's decision to trigger a wave of movement across multiple schools. Plus, not that I am implying any opinion on this here, but you'd be surprised how many people have committed to a school, but choose to sit on every waitlist spot they have just to see the outcome (even if they have no intention of changing their commitment). Sometimes schools have to go through multiple waitlisters just to fill one seat. In a cycle in the past, at least one school has gone through their entire waitlist. Being on a waitlist can feel like a bad thing, but depending on which list/what school, you still have really decent odds.

Although this was a long time ago (c/o 2019), I got pulled off UF's waitlist after they informed their waitlist pool that the class was full. So things happen. If it matters, I looked back on an old UF thread and got the call on April 29th (sorry, for some reason I thought it was before the deadline in my previous post). I don't know if they still email their waitlist once they've finalized their class or not, for those that are wondering.
Can someone just reaffirm that I would be an idiot to deny in state tuition from florida.
Yes, reaffirmed.

Assume you will be declined and proceed with improvements accordingly. Nothing wrong with prepping for the worst, since it will only help you in the next cycle if you need to reapply.

hi guys!! i’m looking to see if anyone would like to start looking at housing or anything anytime soon! im OOS with my only catch being waitlisted @ NC state (my preferred).

Just sent mine yesterday afternoon. No email back yet, but I'm not concerned.

I would if I could but I'll be working! Go if you can, I bet it would be a really great experience to learn about the school even if you aren't offered a spot.

Just to put out a feeler, is anyone on here looking for a roommate? I got accepted IS to UF, so I'm now looking to sort out housing. PM me if interested.

The preview days are on March 13th and 14th which are a Thursday and Friday. The open house is on Saturday, April 5th.
My bad I RSVPed for Friday but we're not leaving till Saturday

Im trying to go to the DVM preview on the 14th with just my partner, then going to the open house on the 5th with my whole family so they can experience it as well.

Currently looking for a male roommate. I'm at the On20 apartments, which is about 2 miles away from the vet school, and my current roommate is moving out after graduating. Message me if you are interested. I am also open to moving to a new apartment complex, especially if you're already in Gainesville and looking for another person.

@katiemcat Could you provide any insight on the summer online orientation? Is it info about the school, policies, or something else? I honestly have no idea what it could be and I couldn't find anything online.

Orientation consists of a bunch of lectures and group activities on school policies (including professional and academic standards), tuition / loans, getting to know your classmates, and touring the school. A lot of the group activities are ice breakers, bonding games, personality trait tests /discussions etc. On the last day there is "family day" where you can walk through and tour the school with your family. All the clubs will set up tables so you can learn about / signup for them and buy their merch. Its honestly quite a lot lol.

My Son is enrolling this August and needs a roommate. You still looking for a roommate?

Is the parking situation bad because of the cost of parking passes or lack of availability or due to traffic? Any input is appreciated!

I’m in the exact opposite position! IS from UGA and OOS UF… thinking the same thing as I am more interested in exotics.

As someone who is also weighing their options, I say go with your dream school. I know other first years who regretted their school for whatever reason and even just a little doubt can make first year so much harder. Research and internships also don't end with undergrad, so go where you know you'll have options!

Lack of available spaces compared to the number of people trying to park. They don’t have enough room for everyone. And overflow lots are a couple blocks away. Traffic on archer road is also notoriously horrible especially right at 7:45-8 and 4:30-5:30, but that’s not nearly as big of an issue as the lack of available spaces.

Not a current vet student, but I used to work at the school. Parking is bad because of lack of availability of parking spots next to the main building. There's an overflow lot, but it's a hike to get to campus from there. If you get there early enough, you'll find parking, but then you have to debate if it's worth it to wake up an hour early to get parking. You also need to keep in mind this city is called "Rainesville" for a reason...walking/biking isn't always gonna be the best option regardless of how close you live, so I'm still gonna get a parking pass even though I live 2 minutes away, but as a UF student you'll get free access to the RTS busses, so that is also always an option.

You can use swamprentals.com (Apartments For Rent | Rentals in Gainesville, FL - Swamp Rentals) to find apartment based on distance/price/bedrooms! I'd also recommend looking at google/yelp reviews for each apartment, keeping in mind that most have pretty bad reviews, but some of them are just trivial things. You just have to see if the negative reviews are talking about things you can live with. For example, the majority of negative reviews about my current apartment only talk about how nobody picks up their dog's poop...I can live with that lol.

More debt also makes the rest of your life harder. I’d recommend talking to people actually paying on their loans, because outlook is quite different once you’re actually handing over thousands of dollars a month than it was as a first year vet student. But it is ultimately a personal decision and I wish everyone the best.

Agree. I don’t think it’s responsible to tell people to make poor financial decisions, especially if you are not currently in / paying the debt…

You know what else makes it harder? Being in so much debt / losing access to repayment programs that you cannot realistically repay your loans and no longer being able to pursue the speciality/life you want because of it. This was a harsh reality a lot of my classmates are beginning to face. I don’t think it’s wise to be giving financial advice like this to strangers.

Woah, calm down. I never gave financial advice and it was never mentioned in my post. I only said “dream school” and they never stated which school was which. But aside from that, the advice is more general because it’s my personal opinion, everyone will make the choice that leads them where they should be. And we can all disagree in more civil ways! Good luck everyone!
I am quit calm and I think I was quite civil! This person is trying to decide between their IS and OOS which has very significant financial repercussions🙂

And to the original poster, yes please consider all aspects of a school and my post was never meant to sway you to one school or the other, only to give you confidence in your decisions!
