Mary--
Actually I like to think that we are 1/4 of the way done.......with the didactic at least. I am looking forward to the clinics....we will be on the bottom no doubt, but at least we won't really have class!

Good luck everyone.....Happy Holidays!!!

-C

Chris,
Do you have this inherent need to be RIGHT ALL THE TIME?????

Ok ****1/4**** of the way. 😛

j/k....Hope you have a fabulous break. See you at "the show" later.

Best Regards,
Howell Jolly

Hey,

Did anyone else want to drink one of the "poisons" when you got to that question-- rat poison, drano, antifreeze, gasoline?

Anyways, we survived, sorta.... Hope you can forget all this & have wonderful holidays with your friends & family!! See y'all in 2003!!

Travel Safe!

Hi all,

Congratulations on completing your first semester of medical school! I was wondering if I could get some feedback on traffic woes from students living north of the river? I am concentrating my house search on the areas of Parkville (Park Hill School District), and Johnson County, KS (Shawnee Mission School District). Also, is the office at UHS open over the holiday break? I just sent my deposit and I wanted to make sure that it made it there ok.

Thanks,

Russell

Congratulations Guys & Gals on completing the toughest section of the 1st year. It's all down hill from here on out (until you get to Neuro that is). I told you about all those q-bank questions eh? Anywayz, be glad it's over and just enjoy your break.......you guys deserve it!!!!!!!!!!

Peace!!!

Congratulations class of 2006 upon completion of your first semester in med school.

Can anyone please tell me what the first year schedule is like. I mean the amount of hours you spent in lectures and the time you spend studying.

What time does class typically starts and when does it ends?

Thanks for you help

UHS07

To answer your question, we typically are in lectures from 8-12 every morning. Each lecture is 50 minutes with a 10 minute break in between. The afternoons consist of labs. We have our OPP and Pathology labs on Monday, our Core Communications lab on Wednesdays, but it doesn't meet every week, and on Thursdays we have Intro. to Clinical Medicine lab. During the sections that have Anatomy those labs are usually on Tuesday and Thursdays, depending on your lab group. When we have Micro. lab it is usually on Tuesday afternoon. These are the general times. Each section is different and variable when it comes to the afternoon labs.
As far as studying goes, you will quickly find in medical school that the amount of time spent studying is HIGHLY variable. Some people do nothing but study, some people seem to study a lot less than would seem to be required. You will also find that the amount of time spent studying rarely correlates with a higher grade. Everyone comes into medical school with different backgrounds and levels of understanding. I will have to say that our class has been great about trying to help each other out. Just about everyday I get an e-mail from a classmate with a chart, or website that helps with whatever we are studying at the time. Hope I answered your questions. Congratulations on your acceptance!

I have to agree with BamaAlum. Everyone is different. For me, I think I studied each day about the amount of time I studied during finals week. Usually around four to five hours. Just depended on the day. One word of advice: Alot of my classmates did this in undergrad. You cannot prepare for a quiz or exam the night before. I thrived on this......I would put on a pot of coffee and then stay up and study straight through to the exam. In med school, you have such a high volume of material, it would be impossible to do that. I have pulled a few all-nighters, but I had been studying a lot during the week too.

Bama, do I know you?? I know you are in my class, I just am having trouble placing who you are?? Congrats on finishing this semester!!

-C

Hey guys.......
All I have to say is WOW!!!! That test was so incredibly tough. I am so glad it is over. I am praying for a huge standard deviation. It seemed like 1/3 of the test was quiz bank! And then, it seemed like we had 50 questions over HIV. If my memory serves, we only had like two or three lectures on HIV. Man, I seriously walked out of there, and was nervous about passing it!

But hey, we are half way done with our first year. Congrats to everyone. And for all of you that went out the other night, it was such a good time!!! We need to get together more often (like the night before exams and just get blitzed!) Might help us on the test!! 😕 😕

OK, well have a great holiday and see you in two weeks. BE SURE TO READ YOUR DUBIN!!

I am practicing my lines for my career after flunking out of med school......I am torn between two.....

"Would you like fries with that?!" OR
"Hi, welcome to Wal-Mart!"

Hey guys MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! Hope that it was a good one. Stay safe and I'll see you's in class 🙁

Dear 2006,

I hope you have been enjoying the break thus far with your friends & family-- I got lucky & woke up to SNOW 😀 this AM (though not too bad-- only an inch or two!). I wish the best for anyone who got slammed with 3 feet worth 😱 & that everyone travels safely back to KC in 2003! See y'all then-- I guess I'll have to think of some cardio songs, right Mary?? 😉

Peace out,
H
😛

Hey guys,
Hope you are having a good break. Does anybody know where I can get the Slice of Life laserdisc? I already have a laserdisc player. I want to use SOL at home so I don't have to go to the library or Smith everytime I want to use it. I am thinking about going into Path so I think it will be a good investment. I can buy it online for $300, but I was hoping somebody had one they wanted to sell. No luck on E-bay.
Chris, my name is Meiklejohn. I sit on the right side of the room toward the back. I have met you a couple of times. Enjoy the rest of your break.

What up--
Man I am ready to come back to school! My wife went back to work today, so I was Mr. Mom! I love my kids and all but damn......ready to get back to my routine.

How is the break for everyone?? I am about 1/3 through Dubin. It is a pretty good book. I am really looking forward to cardio. I think that the rest of the semester should be pretty good. Can't be any worse than skin, blood, and lymph!?

OK, well gotta go cook supper (spaghetti!!), so I will see you all on Monday!!!!

Enjoy the rest of the week!!!!!

-C

Hey--
Well only a day and a half to go until we are back into the grind. I am ready......ready to get back into the routine.......ah the routine of staying up late and getting up early. The routine of not having hardly any free time to do anything fun.....like watch movies, do dishes.......

God I love medical school!!!!

Have a safe trip "home"!

Chris

Hey DrChris and UHSers

I have been accepted at PCOM for the class of 2007, but have been reading your posts all year and you sound like a delightful group of friends and very supportive of one another. I enjoy your thread.

Was wondering with all the stress of med school, what do guys do for exercise? Is keeping in shape hard? My cousin just graduated from pharmacy school and the stress made her gain a ton of weight. What shape is the student body in right now? What kind of exercise do you guys do? I know from your posts that you are some kind of physical trainer Chris, so it probably isn't difficult for you, but what about others? Personally, I'm an avid runner and tennis player. But how much running and tennis can one do in cold Philly PA?

Keep Up The Good Work!

F/A 18--
Congrats on your acceptance!!!

As for staying in shape......it is only as difficult as you make it! I would say that over half of my class works out. Maybe not half, but a fair number of them. We don't have that many overweight people. I had gotten out of my workout routine....thinking that all I have time for is to study. But if I dont work out, my energy level is lower and I really noticed that during the last few sections.

You should make a list of a few things that are really important to you and keep those up once entering medical school. Mine were working out (which I am starting to do better with) and the other was watching ER every Thursday night. So no matter what I have the next day, I always take time to do those things.

I actually lost weight because I have to cook for myself, so I eat less than I am used to. I am not complaining about that.

Anyway, congrats again!!!

-C

UHS to the top!

Wow...it's day three after break and I'm already getting a major brain cramp.

3 cheers to Dr. Nelson! What a cool guy! 🙂

....picture pages picture pages time to get your crayons and your pencils!

😛

Dear 2006ers,

Hope your studying is going well-- yeah, woohoo for COLORED PICS!! I am so visual this is great. Hopefully Blackboard will function well enough to get through, but if not, go to the Blaufuss website (at the end of the "sounds" directed study)-- it's great!

http://www.blaufuss.org/tutorial/ 😍

Good luck Monday-- remember the quiz starts at 8, woohoo!😉

Peace,
H

hey guys--
Hopefully this quiz should be fairly decent on Monday. I feel that I have a hand on the material, but it just depends on the detail of the questions. Of course I know what will happen, they will read my mind and every question will be about something I dont know!!

I think this will be a fun section. It definitely wont be an easy one to just blow off!!

well must get back to it!! See everyone tomorrow at 8!!!

-C

Wow, its been a long time since I've posted on this thread. Well anyway, did anyone try Dr. Karius's conduction block quiz? Don't the answers usually come up after you take the quiz? I got two wrong and I would really like to know which ones they were.

Hey guys--
Well we are a 1/3 of the way done with cardio already. Pretty crazy! I have been spending time and making sweet academic love to my BRS Physiology book as well as Dubin and Lipp's Pharm book. I feel the section is cool, but alot of stuff gets really confusing!

I can't think of anything else exciting to talk about. I am going home this weekend, and hopefully my wife and kids will allow me to study some cause I need it!

Hope everyone has a good weekend! Totally pumped about going to Research Day tomorrow!!!! 😡 😡 +pissed+

Hey what's up? I am the only loser to post in a while huh? Man did Johnston give it to us today or what?? I was having Hubbard flashbacks.......

Oh well, I haven't gotten much done today. Played hoops for about two hours though. thought I should upkick the cardio, since, by the rate I was going, would die of some sort of cardiomyopathy (Med student syndrome: not enough exercise, too many stimulants (caffeine mainly))

OK back to Johnston!!

-C

Hi,

Can you please tell me the UHS rotations sites and the approximate number of UHS student at each site? Which is the best? I know of POH in Pontiac Michigan.

uhs07--
sorry man, I dont know. We don't begin matching for our rotations sites till next year. They dont give us a list; nor do they tell us the number of positions available at each site. You may want to try to contact a second year for that.

Personally, I am not even worrying about it right now......I am just trying to get through my first year.

Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance

chris

Saturday night and studying!! What nerds we are!

I have a feeling that this quiz is going to bite on Monday! I think I know the stuff but then after a certain person talks to us (remaining anonymous 😀 ), I get totally confused!!!

Well have a good rest of the weekend!

-C

Well, Chris, I hate to say it but although you think that studying on Sat. Night makes you a nerd, posting on SDN makes you a bigger nerd!!😛 😛 😛
M. (the biggest nerd of all).😱

I was wondering if any of you could tell me how many people you are allowed to invite to the white coat ceremony.
Any info would be great!!

Vanessa

Yeah, you two (C & M) are the biggest nerds....NOT!

Vanessa,

I have a large family too- 4 sibs, 3 parents (& a partridge in a pear tree...🙄 )!! I was able to have 6 of them come to the White Coat ceremony & they were also able to accomodate my stepbrother, who needed a sign-language interpreter. The group (office) that coordinates the entire ceremony will be in touch with you by the beginning of the summer & you can call them if you have any concerns-- they are really helpful & willing to make anything possible if they can!

Well, it's back to HYPERLIPIDEMIAS for me!+pissed+

Peace out,

Type IIa heterozygous FH

Should be studying but I am posting!! Weird huh?? I just have one question:

WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK ABOUT NEDDLER'S FLASHCARDS??????

Just curious!!!!

I love cholesterol!

-C

Hey guys--
Man, I cannot believe that SDN is actually back up and running.......thought it was a permanent shut down. I am really tired of studying cardio........actually tired of studying period. Oh well.......only 17 hours till the exam......should be able to learn something by then hopefully!!!!

OK back to ASD, IHSS, VD, STD..............

Chris

Chris,

I can't believe you were on here before the final--you crazy!!

To everyone--
I hope you've recovered after that whale of a test!!! Yikes!😱

This is about how I felt after Thursday & Friday 😕 , but I hear that I wasn't alone.... I'm not sure if that's a good thing or what.

Hopefully Respiratory will be better & at least we have spring break to look forward to! (& SDN is BACK UP & RUNNING! )

Happy MS1 2/3!

Peace,
H.

What up what up......
Almost done with our first week of respiratory! Am I the only way that has a very small motivational factor right now???? I hope not! this is really the first night that I have studied this week.......I am just a little burned out!

Man, hopefully we all did decent on our cardio final......that was pretty damn tough!!!! Can't do much about it though!

OK, back to the books........just wanted to say hey and bump us to the top!

Chris

Hey guys,

I hope y'all can get some rest this week b/c Follies is going to be a blast! (And WHOA, we DON'T have a quiz!! for the first time in HOW long???) Anyways, just wanted to pop in & say HI...

Don't study TOO hard!! 😀

~H.

What up y'all--
Well hopefully if you are in my class and are reading this, that you passed Cardio!! It was a tough section but a very interesting one. I am having a problem being motivated to study, just due to the fact that I am still in a funk......post-test study inability.......or something like that

Respiratory should be fun as well. I think it will be a little bit of a break from the rigors of cardio......I mean there are more equations and numbers to memorize, but I dont think it will be that hard conceptually.........that is unless the "penguin" will be teaching us a lot.......I think you know who I mean!

OK, back to the books! Have a great rest of the week!!!!

peace out

-C

Chris,

I cannot believe you brought the penguin into SDN. What were you thinking? This is our sanctuary, man!!!! It's like a bad day at work...leave it at the office, why don't you???? 😉

I had to MAKE myself study tonight. My god, I have nothing left!!! I can't wait for spring break, but then again, I wish I had some great plans for it. Probably go to my parents and not get off their couch for a week. That's what I did at Christmas. I was also thinking about trying to shadow Dr. Matthys for a day. He was a great teacher.

Does anyone have cool spring break plans? Need someone to carry your bags??? I know just the person!

OK, OK...I'm going to go to bed now. I'll be grumpy tomorrow because I have insomnia tonight.

Adios!

Hi anyone, everyone!

OK!

WHAT, praytell, is the DIFFERENCE between pathogenesis and virulence factors?

I say that pathogenesis---is "how the organism makes one sick".

I say that virulence factors----are those factors that contribute to its severity. (according to steadman's, under the definition for "virulence")

For our Micro lectures, with u-no-hoo....the "virulence factors" the professor gives us are more likely to be factors for pathogenesis.

😕 😕 😕
M.

Mary,

Strictly speaking, I'm not exactly sure...they seem very close in definition according to Steadman.

My guess would be that pathogenesis is the accumulation of virulence factors that give an organism its ability to cause disease.

????????? Guess I hadn't really thought about it before! I also kind of connotated pathogenesis with the development and progression of the disease, which is incorrect. hhmmm...oops!

Sorry I couldn't be more help! See you tomorrow...

- Tammy

Thankya honeybabyloverlamb! 😀
I'm so done with that stuff for now.
On to Anatomy!!!
No GUTS no glory!😴
M.

What's up...
Tammy glad to see you on the board again!
Mary, you are just thinking too much!!!! Damn it! 🙂

Boy did we get it stuck to us today or what?? The anatomy really isn't that bad once you see it in lab. But damn......McCandless almost made my brain explode!!!! It was interesting and we need to know it, but every single antibiotic we will ever use in our lives in four lectures???? WOW

WEll I think I am off to bed.......see yall later!

Chris

Hello Everyone!!!

This is my 1st post on SDN...ever.

I just wanted to give a shoutout to all my dogz in the library--our home away from home.

Now that I registered, I can post ALL my problems on this site. yahoo! 🙂

Later,
Igor.

Igor,
Welcome to The Thread. This is a very proud day for you, friend, because our thread has over 10,000 reads and over 500 posts. Not so common on this little establishment we call SDN. We owe the great success to the C-Man himself, DrChris33. Let's take a moment to appreciate this.

Now. Be sure to catch up with me b/c I have follies pix minus all the ones that I look ugly in.

Study hard! Especially the 150 page journal article on asthma!! 😡 😡 😡

Always,
M.

First off--
Welcome to the Club I-man!!!! yes, we do honor our foreign classmates here, so everyone give a high-five to our little Ukrainian friend!!!!!!!

Now to Dr. Mary C--Thanks so much for those kind words. I cannot really take that much credit for the thread, I know someone else would have started it if I hadn't

You guys are cool. I have noticed that people have been posting a lot more lately. Is it because we all have the same lack of motivation problem???? I dont know what my problem is, but this is the least I have studied since I have started school!!

Man I need to get my crap together!!

OK off to bed.......see you all later!!!

C-man

Chris,

I'm very disappointed in you...bed already??? What are you thinking??? You left me high and dry...no chat before beddy-bye! ha! ha!

I am DEFINITELY having end-of-year blues. I cannot get my SH!# together to study. I try and try, but I end up daydreaming. uugghh! 🙂

Hey, question for you guys...do we have direct questions from the readings or are they just supplemental to the classes? Just curious. I really should get started as I have only read one and it was only 1 1/2 pages. lol This is going to be a very long weekend as I have three weeks of reading to catch up on!

Igor...welcome!

Mary, sweetiehoneybunnyloverpumpkin, I'm just trying to find a name fitting for you after the cute name you found for me! ha! ha!

OK...now to finish the lectures from yesterday so I'm only one day behind! (Not counting the readings, of course!) Talk to ya'll tomorrow!

- Tammy

Hi Tammy,

We definitely have direct questions from the evidence based readings. Altough, I am not sure how many questions we have per a week's reading assignment.

If you notice, some of Willsie's notes have slides titled "Evidence Based" (e.g., treatment of pneumonia). It seems to me that these slides are high yield summaries of the readings. Personally, I am just going to memorize those slides, and if I have time this weekend (which I probably won't), I may skim through the readings.

Take care,
Igor.

Thanks, Iggy!

Man, we have so much crap to go through. I am counting on a huge standard deviation, so I can pass this quiz. I just feel so stupid right now.

Well I hope everyone got the cardio grade they hoped for.

Back to the books................

Chris

Does UHSCOM have any relationship with the AOA (Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society)? I know some DO schools elect some 3rd year students into it? Does anyone know about this information? Or does UHS have any honors society for its top students? I was just curious since I was reading about it on a website? Thanks.

Does UHSCOM give exit exams during rotations during the third and fourth years so that you can be prepared for the Comlex II? Does anyone know the schools Comlex II pass rate average? Thanks.

Wolverine--
Sorry bro....I have no idea about any of the questions that you are asking. I am just concentrating on this year right now and not about boards, let alone the second step of boards. I am sure someone know what you are asking!

Tammy--what is the deal man?? You are like posting all over the place on UHS2007??? Is our class not good enough for you anymore?? 🙂 🙂 🙂

ok, enough procrastinating...........DT and Ballam are MINE!!!!
