Well, Chris, to answer your question it could be any one of the following answers...I'll let you pick.

a) I am so frickin' smart that I don't need to study.
b) I am a social butterfly and just want to spread my warmth and joy around.

And Wolverine, I have no idea about the answers to your questions, but of course I'll try and make something up...

I do know there is an honor society at the school, but my grades suck and I have not received my invitation yet. lol (See above for explanation of "my grades suck.") Therefore I couldn't really tell you the name of it.

I think it was the COMLEX II that the first "Genesis" class took recently and they did excellent. If I remember right, it was like a 97% pass rate. It probably wouldn't do you any good to worry about what previous classes achieved on the test as we have a completely new curriculum style than those classes had, so it would be like comparing apples to oranges. But it does appear that the new style more than adequately prepares us for the boards. (By first "Genesis" class, I mean that UHS started the new method of teaching three years ago, therefore we only have one set of Comlex II scores with the new curriculum. Since you've interviewed here, I'm assuming you're familiar with the Genesis Curriculum.)

Here are my answers. Please take them with a grain of salt.

Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society is mainly for allopathic students. I believe it's offered to the top 10% of the class. Osteopathic Schools (specifically UHS) have two other honor societies that take the top 15%.

At the end of each rotation you are required to take a Pass/Fail exam. Theoretically, this exam tests both the knowledge which you should have acquired during the rotation, and the material pertinent for COMLEX II.

If I find out the average passing rate for COMLEX II I'll let you know.

This is some information regarding the most recent UHS performance on COMLEX 1. (I do not have any COMLEX 2 info).

Of the total number of students (2810) taking COMLEX 1, last summer, 88.8 % passed.
Of the total number of UHS students (215) 96.3 % passed.

Of the first time takers (2696) 90.1 % passed.
Of the first time UHS takers (213) 96.7 % passed.

By the way, the two National Osteopathic Honor Societies are Sigma Sigma Phi abd Psi Sigma Alpha.

Man, I was surfing around on the allopathic site (yes I should be studying but the hell with it) and I ran across a thread about osteopathic medicine. I encourage you guys to read it. There are some real a$$holes out there, basically telling people that we are just "dumb MDs that partied too much in college". There is one DO on there that keeps on defending us!!! Way to go oceandoc!

I just thought you guys might be interested in reading that. It kind of pissed me off. I did post on there, but I was discrete.

I had to go put my two cents in. The discussion was pretty good except for those two bozos. I just hope they have to work under a competent, slave-driving DO some day to PROVE to them that MDs are not gods and DOs are not imbeciles. Can't we all just get along? ha! ha!

hhmmmm...sleep or study? sleep or study? Tough choice! I'll have to let you know how it turns out!

Boy, I'm glad to be back in a civilized forum! Didn't know just how good we have it! Seems to me we're more supportive of each other on this side and amazingly supportive of those who "are different."

Thanks to everyone who is answering my questions 🙂 I had a few more. Does anyone know what grading system UHS uses is it pass/fail or letter? Also, for the comlex 1, do you know what is actual average score for UHS? The percentage is 96%, but I'm sort of inquiring about a real number like lets say 100, 200, 300, etc...what is a good comlex 1 score to get a good residency placement? Lastly, does anyone know the percentage for UHS students "first choice" residency placements?

We use letter grades....A, B, C, F

As far as number of score....I dont know

First choice is about 78% I believe

I don't know the answer to your scores question, but I will tell you that in all the articles I've read, your grades and comlex scores are way down the list on getting residencies. They are more concerned with your performance at clinical sites. I don't have the article anymore, but I know topping the list were work ethic and patient interaction skills. These are subjectively graded by each of your clinical directors and will be recorded in your file. This information was obtained by surveys to residency directors across the country. Grades and Comlex scores were like #7 and #13 or something crazy on the list of importance.

Natioanlly, the average COMLEX 1 score, last summer, was 518.
UHS average was 519.

OK, who is already on spring break??????

I think I have studied like an hour so far this week, and it doesnt look like it will get much better.

Anyone doing anything cool for spring break?? I am going to be Mr. Mom.....my wife scheduled every appointment possible for my kids so I will be going to the doc, school and such alot. Sounds great I know..................🙂

Does anyone use Dialup or Cable for UHS? I'm not sure if its worth the extra cost each month to have a fast connection to download stuff? I believe I'm staying at Century Towers, but not 100% sure.
Does anyone rent anywhere else thats pretty close to the school, but with cable included and utilities?
Also, Do you know if UHS students rotate in hospitals with residents and interns? OR are most of them community hospitals?

Hello Wolverine,

Century Towers has a "library" with several computers with a DSL connection. Additionally, UHS a number of DSL computers around campus. I practically never use the computers at home and restrict most of my computer use to those on campus (free printer use is also a plus). So, I personally don't have a need for a dsl connection, and just use dial-up.

As far as I know, UHS students rotate practically everywhere and with everyone. I think we have a rotating partnership in 35 or so states (don't quote me on the number). It mainly depends on where you go. If it's a small rural hospital, then the rotation possibilities will be limited.

Chris lives close to campus and pays cheaper rent than that of CT. He'll probably answer that question better.

Hello Everyone.

I just wanted to remind those of you who really like to press the delete button on your email w/o reading all the messages 🙂 about the Federal PLI reform scheduled to vote on Thursday. (you should have receive an email about this in your UHS account).

The Bill is necessary and vital for the state of health care as a whole, and for the medical profession. I urge you to send an email to your state rep, asking him/her to vote "yes" on it. Just go to <www.congress.org>, then type in your zip code in the "write to your official" section, and the program will take you through the necessary steps. Your official is there to represent your opinion. So, let him know what you think.

The Bill is called H.R. 5, the HEALTH (Help Efficient Accessible, Low-Cost, Timely Health Care) Act of 2003. Some of its main points are:

1. It places caps on non-economic damages, such as pain and suffering ($250,000). Pereviously there was no cap.

2. The damages are allocated among the different parties, in proportion to each person's responsibilities.

3. It limits the number of years a plaintiff has to file a medical liability law suit.

There are several more points to the reform (dealing with attorney fees and the specifics of damage payments), but I think the ones above are the most important.

I totally agree with Igor on this bill. The malpractice liability situation is ridiculous. However, I am afraid that the Democratic trial lawyers are going to chew this bill up in committee. By the time it emerges it may have no resemblance to the original bill and will probably be useless. Who knows? The AMA is pushing this bill hard and heavy(as they should). They have a powerful lobby so maybe they can push a descent version through. My Senators and Reps. are on record supporting the bill, but I am from a Republican state so that is to be expected. I hope it makes it through. I don't want to pay a billion dollars for malpractice insurance.

There is a great Irish bar (and restaurant) that is tons of fun. I'll have to find out the name of it for you. You take the last exit off I-44 and it's just a couple of blocks...I'll try to find out tonight and tell you in class tomorrow. It's real close to the Budweiser plant.

Lots 'o chicks for ya'...ha! ha! (And I'm sure it would be a BLAST on St. Paddy's Day if you're there Monday.)

Hey Guys,

I need some advice. I joined the ranks of the class of 2007 three months ago. Right now I'm in the process of finding an apartment in Kansas City. I called Relocation Central and they suggested Falcon Point. Do any of you have any experience with this apartment complex? Are there any other relocation companies I could call? Are there any other apartments that are reasonably priced but are in a safe neighborhood?

All advice is appreciated.

Hey Samham,

There is some discussion about this on the UHS 2007 thread. I live in Parkville, MO, which is about 15 miles from the school. Rent is pretty reasonable here, but some distance from school.

I don't think anyone who lives in Century Towers has had a problem with the neighborhood, although as you saw it's not a great one.

Seems like the Missouri side is more reasonable than the Kansas side, but I could be wrong.

Try going to www.forrent.com and searching for apartments there. You can type in what you want in an apartment and it will bring up those that fit your needs. That's how I found my apartment. I have a two-bedroom with washer/dryer hook-ups for $570/mo. There is also a pool, work-out room, laundry facilities, playground and sand volleyball court here. I like it. It's River Oaks. You can also have large pets here and the school district is great for my son.

Man, can you believe that in 6 weeks we will be free from our study rooms and smelly scrubs for like three months???? I cannot wait!! It just seems weird that we only have 5 weeks to go until school is out......seems like FOM started only 5.9 years ago!

What are you guys doing for the summer??? I am sure most of you know what I am doing, but for those browsers of our thread I will elaborate.......

I am going to spend one month in Medicine Lodge, KS (kind of appropriate name, eh?) doing a rotation with a Family Practice Doc. From the sound of it, the first day we show up, we are thrown in. We perform all the H &Ps on every patient, plus are on call and have ER coverage. We are first to contact the patient, so I know we will learn so much this summer. According to the doc in charge, we will have the experience of a fourth year once we leave. We will be learning suturing, casting, joint injections, etc. I am really excited to be given the opportunity to do so.

After that, I have been hired by a Medical Temp agency to work in a clinic with a physician. I dont know what I will be doing yet, but I am sure it will be great too. And after that, I will be a Neuro slave for 10 weeks upon beginning my MSII career!

OK well enough procrastinating......back to the anal triangle......hey I think I found Jimmy Haffa!!

Yeah I heard about it through a second year. I then emailed the doc and set it up with him. Also though, the school has lists of available internships for the summer. The maximum you can do is 8 weeks, that you will get credit for.

I do not think they take a part of your pay. I think you get over $10/hr, so I am game. They didnt tell me that, nor did I see it on my paperwork I signed. I have the info if you want it.

Man, is it me or is this stuff pretty tough?????

I don't think I have felt this overwhelmed for quite a while, as far as having a hard time understanding the material. I took the JITT quiz, man got my butt kicked. Obviously I am going to have to get it on hardcore this weekend with some histo action for foreplay and then smack it to Netter and Moore (Embryo).

Not looking forward to this quiz......

On a brighter note, respiratory is over!!!!!! Also, after this week, no more phys or histo!!!

Ok well back to it!!

I've never heard of KCOM having an advantage over another DO school, because it is the oldest. Just because something was first, doesn't mean it's superior. My advice would be to go where you feel most comfortable.

Well GI is cruising right along isn't it. I am just so ready for everything to be done!! Definitely not looking forward to our two weeks of hell with the tests and all

Russell, I think we start as second years on Aug 12th, and the first years usually start a week after us. so I am pretty sure that you guys start up on the 19th. They are sometimes slow when putting up new dates and such......just bear with them.
If I hear of anything I will let you guys know

Hey everybody,
I was just wondering how everyone feels about this Viola Frymann lady who is coming to speak. I am kind of upset about it. I read the 2 disciplinary actions that were taken against her and it is pretty scary. I think that her views on craniosacral therapy are very extreme and highly controversial. Anyway, I know a lot of people think she's great, but after reading the complaints lodged against her(recently, not early in her career) and listening to Erf I don't think she should have been invited to speak. Just my 2 cents.

I'm looking forward to hearing what Dr. Fryman has to say. I know that the disc. actions were posted...I haven't heard what Erf said. I didn't read the disc. actions in detail; I figured knowing that they happened is the bottom line.

Anyway, I'd like to learn more about c/s therapy. I first read about it in Dr. Fulford's book "Touch of Life". I think at this point in my career I don't have much to say about things like this due to my severe ignorance, being a 1st year and all.

I'll listen. If what she says seems sensible, then I will incorporate it into my knowledge. If not, then I won't.

Here's a comment about Dr. Fryman.

Based on the info I've heard, we should be extremely skeptical of what she tells us. However, her mistake does not mean that she doesn't have anything of value to teach us.

I don't think there is anything wrong with her being invited to speak at UHS. She is an expert at a certain field and therefore is qualified to share her knowledge.

Personally, I would like to hear what she has to say, simply because craniosacral is a highly controversial topic and I am highly ignorant of it 😉. I guess I'll just have to turn on my BS detector and see what happens.

I just got back from enjoying a great huge plate of spaghetti in at Evan's birthday. It was nice!!!!!

Can you believe that we took our last quiz this morning........now only seven exams to go!!!

I also wanted to point out that we now how 800 posts and over 12,000 views on our page!!!! Woo hoo for us!!

Well it is kind of tough to do so, since our schedule is so different from day to day. But I will walk through a breakdown....

Lecture is M-F from 8-12. Every Monday afternoon, you will have OPP lab, generally for two hours. Also for one hour on Monday, is usually pathology lab.
Tuesday is usually anatomy lab for about 4 hours, but you dont have anatomy lab all the time either. You are divided up into four groups, based on your last name (A-D groups). Then two of the four groups (ie C and D) will be in lab. The other two groups will come down for an hour, generally after the lab is over, to review what the other group did.

Wednesday is usually an off day, as far as the afternoons. Thursday afternoon is usually Intro to Clinical Medicine (ICM) where you learn to do physical exams on the system you are studying (cardio exam during cardiovascular).
Friday is usually done by noon as well

Like I said, each section is different as well as each week. At the beginning of each section, you are handed a syllabus for the entire six weeks, telling you exactly where you need to be at any given time.

Thanks Dr Chris. I really appreciate the help. I was scared about being in class from 8 to 5 everyday. I think the schedule is not that bad.

You have helped to ease my fear. I had a very nice interview experience at UHS last year and was accepted two day later. So, I had to turn down interview offers from PCOM, NYCOM, and another school. I also withdrew my application from KCOM and DMU. I hope that I have made the right choice.
