Hey everybodee--
Man it is great to see you all postin' like crazy on here. I was feeling like a loser since I was the only one who seemed to be on here, especially around exam time!!!

Glad to hear everyone is having a good summer. Man it is July already!! Can't believe it. One month from now and we will be hating our lives again!! 🙂

Bama, keep the path alive......so to speak! Laurel keep em shiny....Dave keep Dancin'!

And as for you Des.....well I won't share any of our dirty secrets from our month together!! Ha, ha, ha! I still have dirt on you, you know.

I am gettin pretty bored. Love playing with the kids......hate not having a gym to go to. Tore my soleus again, so I am limping around like a punk a$% once again. Hopefully it will heal up in a few days enough to get to shootin hoops again. I have watched Tele-Tubbies, Scooby Doo and Harry Potter so much that I have nightmares about the Teles being Doctors and all that. I have each episode memorized!! Sucks but I am having fun with the kiddos.

Well I guess nothing else exciting here to report. I am curious, those of you that took the Forensic Path course, what was your final mark on the transcript for that??? I got an S--not sure if it stands for sucks or what.

I can't remember what letter I got for the forensic course; I like to immediately throw away any item with words such as "class rank" and "evaluation."
I'm going to the pool today! Woo hoo! Haven't had a weekday off in forever, so I'm going to enjoy it as much as possible. I'm going to look like a lobster, I'm sure but I'll be a happy one.
Recent developments have occurred as of late, people. Listen up. Listen to the words that I say: I bought a teacup poodle this week! Ha! Chris, I told you I was SO getting one. He's white and will get up to 4 pounds. Tiny guy! I'm in love with him, as all of you will be when I bring him to class in a stylish little bag. How fun is THAT?!!
Well I'm off to run a bit before heading to the pool. Don't want to scare away all the small children.

I am going to meet the world-renown orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews Wednesday at HealthSouth headquarters in Birmingham. My mom has an appointment with him for a knee replacement consult. I'm pumped! He's the best in the world. I am hoping there will be some cool athletes in the waiting room. I know this time last year Allen Iverson came down to see him. Barry Zito was in town a couple of weeks ago for an appointment. Maybe MJ (the original, not me) will turn his ankle this weekend playing some pick-up games. 🙂 I am sure some pro or college athletes will be there. I'll let everybody know how it goes. I'll holla'....

Sorry everyone for letting the thread plummet! Thanks Bama for getting my back. I have still be in Clyde with the fam and we have no internet. The library is my only source and it is only open a few days a week. Today I am in KC; had to get a repeat EKG for my study at Quintiles. My first one had inverted P waves on leads II and III. I thought that was kind of weird but the doc that did my physical said it was a normal variant. I also have to get my mail and go to a meeting at the school. So currently I am in my apt catching up on email and the like.

I have seen a pic of Des's dog. I have a feeling we are all in for an extra exciting year, with Des toting around her spawn, probably will have sweaters and everything, so if it gets loose in the neighborhood, it will get its butt kicked!!!

OK, well better go eat, work out and then go to my stuff. Talk at you all lata!!

We're slacking, you guys! I had to forward down the page forever before I got to our thread!
Anyway, I know you're all dying to hear about my son. He is white and I get him on Monday. He he! I'm sure you'll all meet him at school functions that I will inappropriately be bringing him to.
I did a one night Quintiles study this week...I'm so tired today cuz they sucked all the blood out of me. Oh well. Gotta pay for the baby doggie somehow (pathetic or what?!)

What up y'all--
Well nothing much new and exciting here. I had a repeat EKG for my Quintiles study, and found out that I can be in the study. So I was relieved then, cause if I didn't get in, then I would be screwed for money.

Other than that, I will be studying a crap load during my study, since it sounds like we are in prison.....have to stay in bed pretty much the whole time.....fun fun!!!

Well just giving a shout out to all the homies in Class of 2006! Holla back!

Glad you've been okayed to do the research study, Chris Christopherson. I'll have to drop in to say hi when I come in on the 23rd for my follow-up appt. Will you still be there?
AHHHH! I get my baby doggie tomorrow and I can't wait. I'm down to two names; his personality will determine which one I'll give him: Steiner or Maximus. Hmmm.....it's a difficult decision here, people. Steiner is the name of my favorite wrestler on WWE - Scott Steiner, formerly known as Big Poppa Pump, formerly half of the infamous duo The Steiner Brothers along with his brother the Dog Faced Gremlin. On the other hand, Maximus is cute, too. I just don't know; I'm struggling here.
Any input? Ahem, I should say, any POSITIVE input? That was directed to you, Bama and Chris. No teasing about my gay dog with the pink rhinestone collar. I love my gay dog.

What up--
Well I leave to go back to KC tomorrow. Gotta be at Quintiles at 7 am for the beginning of my sentence. I will be there from July 16th until July 24th, and then from July 29th until August 9th. Wish me luck!! Hopefully my roommates won't be total tools!!

Des, I think you should go with Maximus, Glut Eus Maximus!! Since you're an A#*!!!! Just kidding, don't go all psycho needing drugs on me! 🙂

Don't have much else to talk about. Been really hot here, big shocker! I have been cleaning all day with the wife.....we got rid of the older two for a week, so I got to sort through their underwear today and get rid of the ones that don't fit anymore......I wouldn't rather be doing anything else!!

I dont know how much computer access I will have in the pen, so I will update you when I can!!!

What's up everybody? Not much here in good old Wichita. I don't know about you guys, but I'm getting anxious to get back to my routine in KC!! I'm taking a trip to Minneapolis this week to see my cousin -- so much fun. I'm gonna stop in and try to see Chris in prison so I can make fun of him...he he he.

MISS MARY!! No, actually I didn't get your email. I was wondering how you were doing, though so I'm so glad you posted. As sad as it is, I didn't end up getting the dog. I had it paid for and everything, then when I saw it I knew I couldn't keep it. It looked nothing like the picture and was much bigger than she told me it would be. I just decided that was way too much money to pay for something I didn't want. So I called the breeder -- she was pissed -- and I drove the dog back to Nebraska the next day. I'm glad I did it though, because when I got there she had about 20 dogs running around her kitchen (icky) and not one of them was a teacup poodle, they were all toy poodles (which are a few pounds larger). So I was relieved I did the right thing.
Moral of the Story: Don't buy a freakin dog off the internet!!
When is everybody going back to KC? I'll probably get there around the 5th or 6th.

I'm still ALIVE!! Yes I sweat off my entire body weight at Camp Bullis where we lived for a week in tents! Fortunately the Army provides plenty of water to fill our canteens with. We got evacuated on wednesday for Huricaine Claudette,but stuck out the rest of the week in the intense heat.
We all graduate from OBC on Friday! HOOAH! Can't wait to see everyone again back in KC. I didn't know it was so hot there lately. By the way Desiree, you are famous, people know you here at Ft. Sam. Gotta go, big class party tonight!

Hey guys--
I just got out of Quintiles this morning!!!! Damn it feels good to be out. I have five days off then back in again for another 13 days. The first period was cake. I got Coumadin on the first day and that was it. Got blood drawn about 8 times that day but then the next day I just got drawn twice and then every day after that it was once a day. So I sat around and watched movies, played Monopoly, Dominos, and played some hard core football on Playstation.

So I am heading back to Clyde today and then will be back here on Monday some time.

Russell, it is a pretty formal thing so I would tell her to wear a nice dress. You will be wearing a suit to it. Think interview attire and you will be safe.

Well I am going to go work out since I havent for like three weeks. It is killiing me.l

Hello Chris and everyone,
I had a question, what kind of attire does one wear on the first day of orientation. The letter says thats when class picture will be taken, is it orientation dress (aka. suit and tie) or just casual dress (white shirt, tie)? I'm a little confused about it.

I wish that they'd get it together with this...they love to enforce the dress code, but they are far less than succinct wtih details and then they get pi$$ed when people don't follow the rules!

Anyway,
I think most people last year wore dress slacks and shirts with ties...with or without suit jacket...they can't say anything to you if you dress nice, like you did for your interview.

Look at my helpful little classmates! I just got back from Minnesota last night..I went to visit my cousin and had TONS of fun. I saw the Mall of America, which was key. I got a cute little hat.
Did you expect anything less, Laurel?!! I must say, I had my way with many a soldier on that base. Just kidding! Did you run into some friends of mine?
Well, I better get back to work. Sounds like everyone is having a great time this summer, though. Can't wait to see all of you!

Hey everybody!
I just got back from a week in beautiful Orange Beach, Alabama. I had a blast. Saw a few dolphin, almost got devoured by jellyfish, pretty standard really. I got to eat at Jimmy Buffett's sister's restaurant. Jimmy wasn't there (bummer). They say he stops in for lunch sometimes.
Sallie Mae sent me a letter and told me how much interest I have accrued on my loans already. I almost stepped in front of a bus. Does anybody know where I can sell organs? I have 2 kidneys, who really needs 2? I know that there is a black market for them, although I can't tell you the definition of black markets. Healthcare Policy lectures = nap time.
Sorry to hear about your rat, I mean dog, Desitree. I know he would have made a great rodent, I mean, pet. I once tried to buy a white bengal tiger online. It didn't work out, though. I still don't know why. See everyone in a couple of weeks.

I saw Chris Christopherson in the pen a couple wks ago when I was up in KC for a couple days. Chris, I'd be going CRAZY! It really is a prison. I had to like hide in the hall so I could talk to him. Little did they know I slipped him some Captain while I was there.
Hmmm, what else is going on. This is my last week of work -- woo hoo!
Can't wait to see everybody...Mary we gotta have a dinner and girls night a couple times before the 11th!

Man, the ladies are stepping up the posting lately. Where did Chris go? Let me inject a little testosterone into the forum. Laurel, are you now a lean, mean Army medical machine? When do we have to be back? The 11th? Laurel, you know me I will not come back until the last possible second. I'm trying to get my mind right about going back to school. I'm not looking forward to the grind again. I have grown accustomed to my leisurely days of sleeping late, playing golf and meeting Buffy for lunch down at the country club. Okay, I lied about that last one, but the fact remains. Oh well, one more year and then we get to try some real medicine. Where does everyone want to do their rotations? I am thinking of setting up a bribery system whereby I offer money if someone gets my first choice site. I can't stand the thought of being in Iceburg, MI (no offense to my wonderful classmates from the great state of Michigan). Has anyone heard if we are getting any new sites? See everybody soon. Hey guys!

I know it's been forever since I've posted. Looks like you've really had the party going on in here. I can tell everyone has been busy this summer. I guess you can say that I've been busy, but I definitely haven't felt like a medical student. I did do a two week summer practicum at Children's Mercy--Hematology/Oncology Clinic. I also planned a wedding and went on a fabulously fun and relaxing honeymoon! I'm a married woman now!! Got married July 12.

I don't want to go back to school yet!!!!

I guess it's inevitable though. I do want to keep the clock rolling so that we'll graduate one of these days!

I'll be excited to see everyone. Enjoy the days we have left. Please tell me that none of you have been studying neuro daily!

I'd just like to thank everyone on this board whose provided me with information to better prepare myself for first year at UHS.


Also, I just had one final question, do I really need to buy all those medical instuments, I have a stethoscope already, but I'm not sure if its worth paying the bookstore a ton of money for all the other instuments unless I really need them for class?

Also, I signed up for Roadrunner high-speed, is that worth the extra money over dialup to print out notes or use blackboard?

First off, I don't think we are getting IDs tomorrow, just pics for the year book. I will probably dress up, but that will be the last day!!!!

Sorry I haven't posted in like forever...the Quin Pen has a family filter on the net and for some weird reason, SDN was filtered. I guess it is due to the porn pics of Des! So that is the reason for my absence. I appreciate MJ for keeping the testosterone levels high on here!! Thanks buddy!

Man I can not believe we are starting up again already!!! I was talking to a few third years today, and they were just telling me to strap it on for Neuro. There is a lot of it on boards and a lot on the comprehensive final. So we are in for a fun ride!!!!!

Ok, well I suppose I should get to work cleaning. Man it feels good to be on here again. Had SDN withdraw!!!!

Does anyone know what we have to wear to the first OPP lab for MSIs on monday? I'm not sure whether I should wear the shorts/T-shirt? Also, if anyone has info on the other labs as well such as anatomy and microbiology?

Chris, was that you giving the hand signals at the White coat ceremony last night?

For OPP lab I would just wear a T-Shirt and shorts. As for anatomy lab, you can do one of two things. You can get a pair of scrubs to designate for anatomy scrubs and keep them in your locker or you can just wear whatever you wear to class to anatomy. I do the latter. Micro is the same, but you only have like four or so micro labs

And yes that was me directing you all last night!!!

I would recommend looking on the net for scrubs. I think you will find them cheaper there, than anywhere around here. Go to like cheapscrubs.com, discountscrubs.com, allheart.com, etc.

As for you Desitree--you better watch your step miss thang!! Don't make me drop a smack down!!!

I couldn't imagine Des and Kendra drawing attention to themselves.....can anyone else???

Man I am just having a severe case of ADD this week. I feel I have learned nothing......I just can't focus, so I decided to focus on SDN instead of the ibSLN of vagus passing over........whatever.

Hope everyone is studying more intensely than I am. I have a feeling the quiz on Monday is going to be scary for me.

To Chris and the MS 2,
I was just wondering, in the green syllabus they give readings, do you think its wise of me to read those, or only refer to them if I don't understand the lecture....it seems like reading is taking up most of my time instead of reviewing notes or summarizing notes...also as first years , how did you guys make the transition, I feel like I'm not doing anything right? Also, I tried summarizing every lecture and that is also time consuming, does anyone recommend a better way to remember everything for the quiz and exams...it seems a little overwhelming...sorry to bog you done with questions like this since you are busy with neurological section, but I feel confused right now...I tried studying a little with some people and it seems like their level of understanding is higher than mine....I can remember main ideas, but not the detail or some of my other study partners? Anyone have any suggestions, usually, it takes a lot of time for me to understand concepts...I'm trying to find an efficient way to remember all the details...

First, as far as studying goes do what works for you...if you like to study alone I would study alone. I can tell you from my prospective I much rather study alone. The "suggested reading" in the textbooks is just that suggested reading. I feel that the lecture notes are enough...although the readings are good as far as supplementing material you do not understand. As far as reworking your notes, I am not a big fan of that because you invest a lot of time rewriting notes not knowing them. I highly recommend prereading the next day's notes the night before...do not ponder over the notes but skim them to get major details which makes the lecture a lot easier to follow. Don Weaver also puts on some workshops early on which you may want to get pointers or set up an appointment with Don one on one. I agree with Disco Dave on this one -- study the way that works best for you. When I started last year, I honestly didn't know whether I would do better in groups or alone. I found out that I got really frustrated and felt stupid when I studied in groups because I always felt like I didn't know as much as everyone else. I ended up studying alone and "actively learning" my notes -- I highlighted things while I was reading, I jotted a note down every now and then, anything to keep my attention. Once I feel like I know the lecture well enough to talk through it out loud, I usually study with Chris and we quiz each other over the lecture. I wouldn't recommend rewriting the notes - it's too time consuming and you're just copying words down. Board review books are good to use if it's something you just really have no idea about. I went to Don Weaver's workshops last year and found them really helpful. He says it takes three repetitions to get something into long term memory, #1 is prereading the night before for like 15 min., #2 is the lecture itself, and #3 is going through it that night. Sorry so long, hope it helps!

I third what Des and the Inferno said. I took me the entire first semester to really figure out what worked best for me. I would try different things until I really found what I liked to do.
I am a flash card guy.....so I made a lot of flash cards on things i thought were really important. Plus it allowed me to study when I drive three hours every other weekend to see my wife and kids.
My suggestion is to try to get through the lectures each day. if there is something you don't understand, look them up in a textbook or on the net. Then during the weekend, try to review the weeks material a few times. For me, I usually spend about 4-5 hours a night studying, since I go home every other weekend....my kiddos dont let me study.....neither does my wife

Around final exam time, I would go through the board review book entitled Step Up....it is a systems based approach like our cirriculum. I would go through the notes about two times, then go through step up a few times and I did decent. I am not an A student.....Bs in medical school are ok (took me a while to accept that)
I also have a few BRS books (Board Review Series). Physiology is awesome. I used it alot.

Just do what works best. Find a few people you can study with before quizzes by asking each other questions, going over the notes, etc.
