What made you choose UHS over KCOM? I have been accepted to KCOM, but I have my interview at UHS dec 6, so I haven't made up my mind.

Thanks😛

Nice to meet everyone. I just mailed in my deposit so I will officially be attending UHS next fall! I'm Eric and I'm from a small town in southeast MO originally. I moved to Columbia MO 2 years ago to finish med school pre reqs. Is everyone as excited as I am about starting? I would really like to begin now. So anyway, there's a brief bit of info about me and once again, nice to meet you all.
🙂

Hi Audrey and Eric. Glad to see others finally talking. I was beginning to think I was talking to myself and that was a bit weird. I am just excited to be moving on to this new stage in my life. Hope I don't sound too ambitious.

Russell

Hey everybody!!!

My name is Vanessa and I am from Folsom, CA. I am 20 years old, and I will be graduating from a small school in east Tennessee on May 1st with a degree in Medical Technology. I will then get married July 13th, and move to KC the first week in August. I look forward to meeting you all, and have been looking at all kinds of apartments in the area. I am not sure which one is the best deal, but these few keep coming up:

Camden Passage
Woods of Walnut Creek
Bennington Ridge
Century Towers (obviously)

Anybody have any more info on these apartments please share your thoughts!!! I will see you all in August. Talk to you later!

Vanessa   🙂

Hey, as far as I understand, at Century towers, you pay for the convenience of being close to school, but nothing else. You are not close to any stores or other conveniences. I haven't looked into any other apartments because I will be buying a house.

I hope you spoil yourself on your honeymoon. Man, I thought getting married in college was tough. Can't imagine what it'll be like for you. What does your Fiance do?

Good luck though and I'll see you in August.

You were very helpful. My wife really appreciated your tour. After we left she said that I could go to UHS if I wanted. I will be in your shoes though next year, because she decided that she didn't want to try to finish her degree in KC. She will live at her mom's house with the kids and finish her degree in CA while I study my a$$ off in KC. Unlike you, however, I will not be able to visit very often. It will be difficult, but we'll survivive.

Russell

Hey Vanessa
Congrats on the upcoming wedding and the acceptance to UHS! I will also be getting married over the summer and starting UHS in the fall. My fianc? and I went apartment hunting last weekend so I can give a little bit of first hand knowledge on some of the apartment places you mentioned. Camden Passage, Woods of Walnut Creek, and Bennington Ridge are all north of the Missouri River. We timed out the commutes and Woods is about a 10 min drive to UHS and while Bennington and Camden are more like 15 min drives (Saturday afternoon, don't know how it will be during rush hour). My fianc? and I wanted something that was a little closer, so of the three, Woods is the only one we looked at. We also looked at Briar Hills, which neighbors Woods of Walnut Creek and Colony Courts, which is close to the intersection of Searcy Creek Parkway and Parvin Rd.
Here are my notes from our hunting adventure:
Briar Hills
Huge living rooms
Washer and dryer are downstairs and shared by whole building (2-3 apartments I think)
Dishwasher and Garbage disposal(dishwasher is a must as neither one of us like to wash dishes)
Overall impression wasn?t bad, but at the same time it didn?t feel like home
Colony Courts
Exterior of the buildings needs work, need to replace some siding, touch up the paint here and there (it didn?t look that bad, but having done carpentry work with my grandpa I didn?t see why they should leave it in a mild state of disrepair)
lots of children, may have been due to the Thanksgiving holiday though
Woods of Walnut Creek
Offered discounts for the employees of some companies based in the area
Trees, trees and more trees, also squirrels
Energy efficient (R-30 in the ceilings, R-19 in the walls, ceiling fans, etc.)
*?R-factor is a measure of energy efficiency, more R factor equals more energy efficiency

We ultimately decided to go with Woods of Walnut Creek based on location, aesthetics of the surrounding area and the discounts. My fianc? signed the lease yesterday morning. However, I don?t know how many more vacancies Woods of Walnut Creek is going to have in the near future. According to the 10pm news tonight, Woods of Walnut Creek had a fire last night that destroyed one housing unit and displaced seven families. At this point I don?t know if the unit we are renting has been affected or if the current vacancies will be filled by those displaced by the fire. I?ll keep everybody posted. Let me know if you have any other apartment questions.

Later,
Audrey

PS I just called my fianc? and our apartment wasn?t affected nor is it needed for the displaced families, so it looks like we will be renting from them after all!

Hey All!!

Looks like I'll be attend UHS in 2003! i just interviewed at OU and LECOM, but was waitlisted at both. But, I am very very happy with UHS. The curriculum sounds fantastic.

Oh by the way, I'm Rebecca! I'm 23 and graduated in 2001 from Kent State with my BS in Educaiton.

I'm *thinking* about staying at Century towers...anyone else?

Hey Everyone!!!

My name is Mindy, I'm 23, and from Socorro, New Mexico. Congratulations to all my future classmates!!! I am so excited to be part of this class. I don't think the full reality has sunk in yet 🙂

Rebecca, I'm seriously considering Century Towers. I've called to have my name put on the waiting list. Being from New Mexico, I'll feel better about not having to drive in the winter. However, I'm open to finding a better deal (if that is possible). I know about the elevator and other maintenance troubles, but I really liked what I saw.

It's great to have the opportunity to meet you all!!!!
🙂

There is a waiting list for century towers???

WOAH...I was hoping to get the Leuco apartment and find a roomie...

My parents are buying us a house (well, we will pay the mortgage and they get the equity). But for the first year I will be alone while my wife finishes school here. So I will be looking for roommates. I liked century towers, but it was really cramped and cost a lot more than other places.

Russell

hello to all future classmates, my name is alan and i'm from nj. as far as i know there is no waiting list for century towers. i sent in my application and rental fee and the woman i talked to said i would have a choice of which floor i would want to live and what sort of view i would like (east view, west view, no view).

Is everyone looking for apartments? Or are there some of you who would be interested in sharing a house?

Russell

Hey everyone! I just interviewed at UHS not too long ago and really liked the school! The only thing im not too keen about is the area its in. I was kind of curious and asked a police officer I ran into what he thought about the area. He was like...well Im armed and I still wouldnt go walking down there myself!! I was told that a lot of students live in Kansas because its a lot nicer there....is anyone else goign to do this? I am just curious what others think about the safety.

Suzy-Q,

I'm a first year who lives at Century Towers. I'll comment on the safety issue. Century Towers and UHS are kind of like two citadels. Both places are very safe. The only place I ever walk to is across the street to UHS. There's usually a group of people coming and going, so its pretty safe. Plus, there's a satelite police station on the first floor- fear not, they don't bring in people they've arrested there! I wouldn't walk around the area by myself at night, but there's no reason to do anything like that. I actually think living here might be slightly safer. Here's why. Our cars are in an enclosed lot. The UHS parking lots are not enclosed. As a matter of fact, someone had their car broken into at UHS just yesterday. All in all, Century Towers is a pretty secure building.

So there isn't a waiting list at Century Towers? When I called this week the lady I spoke with said that I would be at the top of the waiting list. However, I haven't sent in my deposit yet, so that may be the issue.

In regards to renting a house, do you think it will be less expensive? How much does a three bedroom house rent for in Kansas City?

C'mon people, there have to be more of you out there! I know some of you lurkers just want to write something, but can't bring yourself to! I don't like talking to myself  .

... I don't know what rental of a house is, I will by buying a house with my parents' help.

Wish me luck guys, I'm leaving for my UHS (Dec 11) interview tommarow. You guys have any ideas for things to do in KC the night before the interview?

Hey Vanessa,

Do they assign you an advisor only after you've paid the deposit? I need to send it in still.

Russell

Yep, once you send in your deposit, you will be assigned an advisor. You will probably get this information back within a week after you mail the check. I'll give UHS credit for the speedy turn around time.

To everyone who interviewed today:

You probably figured this out already, but just in case you were wondering- this was the first time we ever had a monkey in the classroom! Now that I think about it, that was the first time we had any animal in the classroom. I wouldn't expect to see a monkey again unless one of your future classmates has one and brings it in.

Huh?? Monkey??

🙁

Hey guys, I had my interview today. For some reason I feel like I just messed up on the interview. I'm bummed out. But the campus, the program, and the faculty and students are so nice. Just one thing though, pretty much everyone I saw a Centuary Towers says dont move there.

Hey Doc George,
Hang in there. Is there any specific reason why you feel like you messed up? The interview is over and killing yourself over it won't get you anywhere. Keep in mind that the professors and administration at UHS are very human and for the most part very understanding. They realize that most of the people who come into interview are apprehensive. Keep your chin up. There's alot of us in the class of 2006 that thought we totally bombed the interview. A friend of mine that sits right next to me in class thought that she totally screwed up the interview. I forgot the details, but I remember it was kind of extreme. Regardless, she's studying medicine right now. Let that be hope to you. Let us know what goes on in the coming days.

Docgeorge, were there any specific reasons people said not to live in Century Towers? Anyone who is living there now, could you comment on your feelings about CT. I plan on living and I would like to know if I should be looking for other housing.

Yoss

From what most people told me they were really irrated with the elavators. They seemed to have not been working all year, although the manager said that they were ordering new elavators and those should be in by Feb. If they fix the elavators, I see some pluses and minuses to living there, One big plus is that you are so close to the school, and that pretty much the whole place is student orrientated. The big negative that I was was that this place is a converted hospital, and the appartments still remind me of a hospital. Besides that it basically looks and feels like dorm living. Unless there are some other major problems that come to light, my fiancee and I (if I get in) will probabally be living there next year.

Old Yeller,

I dont know why I feel that way I just do. I thought all they focused in on were the bad things in my file (gpa is a little low) they did'nt mention all the good things (mcat, research, medical experience, ect..) Oh well, I guess I'll know tommarow.

DG,

Who were your interviewers? PM me if you don't feel comfortable saying in the thread.

Russell

Hey guys,
I just got back from my interview also. 🙂 I had a really great time there. I stayed with Hillary and she was AWESOME. If anyone else is interviewing there i'd definately recommend saying with a student. It give you a really good look into student life, and you have time to ask questions and even go to class.

Docgeorge,
don't be so worried. I'm sure everything will turn out fine. 🙂 Just try not to think about it. You said that we find out tomorrow? Can we call them? They told me that we'd find out by mail on the 20th.

Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for everyone that I met. It was really reassuring to see how much the students love the school.
Jenny

Hey Jenny,

Gland things went well for you. Hillary was my tour guide. She was very helpful. As for notification, I called, but only because I was up against a wall with an acceptance deposit at another school. UHS was my first choice and I didn't want to pay gobs of money to a school that I wasn't likely going to attend. They told me that I could expect a response by the second of december (my interview was on 11/20 and their committee met on 11/25. I received my letter on the 29th (probably would have come on the 28th, but that was Thanksgiving). So realistically, depending on where you live, you can probably expect your letter sometime earlier in the week of the 20th depending on where you live.

Good luck

Russell

😳 About where and where not to live...
True, a lot of students at CT are not very happy and are stuck there because CT won't let them break the lease. But I also hear some students like the convenience of being across the street. Exams are at 7:00 am, so those few extra minutes can make a big difference for some folks.
Safety is an issue however. I have a friend in CT who needed to go out and buy some milk, but changed her mind when she looked out her window and saw a few, shall we say shady-looking, characters by the corner store. The truth is the neighborhood really isn't the best, but you probably already know that. 4 cars at UHS were broken into last week. Now, coming from San Francisco I have to say this isn't the worst neighborhood I have ever seen (comparable to the southern Fillmore district if you know S.F. at all), but KC has some very nice areas to live in and personally I would rather live in a nice neighborhood and give up the convenience factor at CT. I live 6 miles from school, you can't beat that.
1/2 of the 1st year class lives at CT and the rest either live North (yucky commute with the bridge), east, or south (Plaza area).
Some do commute from Kansas, several students (mostly married) live in Overland Park which has a great school district if you have any kids and has some very reasonable apartments. You can get a gorgeous one bedroom apartment on a golf course for only $700 a month.
For some reason there seems to be a big draw to Bennington Ridge Apartments, which is north of the school. Several students live there. I hear it is nice and the rent is reasonable.
Regardless of where you go you can expect to pay between $500-$600 for a one bedroom apartment (less for studio) if you want to live in a decent neighborhood. If you are thinking of doing the house-thing, check out Brookside, south of the Plaza. It is supposed to be very nice, and reasonable. I talked to a 3rd year who had a 3-bedroom and was paying $1000 a month.

Hope this helps some. Good luck.

I mentioned this a while back, but I thought I'd say it again. With my parent's help, I will be buying a house somewhere in the greater KC area (probably in the Park Hill area to the north of the river). My wife and kids will be coming out after my MSI year (she is finishing her undergrad). If anyone is interested in renting a room let me know. I really would like to rent to fellow MS-Is so that we could have a little med-school commune-like feeling to the place.
Any of you interested let me know. And for my wife's sanity, I can only have male roommates. Not that she doesn't trust me, but why should I give her any reason not to, she will be 1967.3 miles away after all.

I imagine that rent would be very competitive with what an apartment would rent for (if not significantly less), and of course we would have a lot more space. Plus, with three people, we could defray a lot of the costs associated with renting (ie high speed internet, etc.)

Let me know if any of you are interested, I'll repost this from time to time as our little group grows.

Dr Smiles:
Is this a yucky commute on KC standards or SF standards? I was under the impression that the commute from Overland Park was the worst (traffic wise). I stayed in OP and it only took me 30 minutes to get to the interview. This was with slightly heavy, but well flowing (60 mph) traffic. What is the commute like from say Parkville?

Russell

So I just called UHS and they told me that I was placed on the High Alternate list. What does that mean?

Most schools weight their waitlist. They won't tell you what your number is because it may change daily, but they will tell you that you are towards the top of the list. This is where you probably stand.

Good luck, I hope you get bumped up.

Russell

I just found out I was accepted at UHS 🙂

Thanks Russell, I appriciate the good thoghts. I figure that they interview 500 and accepct about 85% of them, then that leaves me with 425 accepctences and all I need is for 225 of those people who were accepcted to go someplace else then I think I have a pretty reasonable chance of getting in to UHS. Wadday think, and Math is my weak point.

I feel bad for feeling kinda bummed out, I mean I already have an accepctence to one school, I'm doing better then a lot of people.

Suzy congrats, and are you going there? I'm trying to keep track of the numbers.😉

Thanks DocGeorge 🙂 Im not sure If im going to go there or not...I just had an interview at DMU and I really liked that school as well. Im going to have a tough decision!! I think you will have a good shot at getting off the waitlist...dont give up hope ! You'll do great! Im turning down my LECOM acceptance though...gosh Im just glad I found about about UHS before the 19th when my deposit was due! Good luck to you!

I really loved DMU also. My fiancee is going to UHS, if it was'nt for that it would be really hard for me to choose between the two. I mailed my 1500 to LECOM. I hope I find out about DMU soon, (likie this weekend) otherwise my 1500 bucks are gone.

Docgeorge,

Don't turn down your LECOM acceptance holding out hope for UHS. I realize it may be a financial hardship, but you never want to turn down a straight acceptance for a waitlist hope. I hate to be blunt, but UHS way overaccepts in the hopes that they don't have to go into the waitlist. So if you havn't already paid the LECOM deposit, pay it. You need to secure a spot. Consider it insurance if you truly want to go to UHS.

Good luck in the decision making.

Russell

Oh no I not going to give up a confirmed spot for a wait list. I said If I found out I got into DMU this weekend, then I'm not going to LECOM.

Ah, I didn't see your previous post before I posted my last. We must have been writing at the same time. Good luck on DMU.

Hey Jar Jar, er I mean Docgeorge,

Is your fiancee a SDNer? If not you should bring her into the discussion. Is she in the 2007 class or is she already there?
