Question for you folks already there...

Glasgow's website says 11,500 pounds (almost $18,000) is enough for living expenses for a student...does this seem correct? or would you say its higher/lower?

Edinburgh was estimating a little lower, and RVC lower still (which SHOCKS me, I can't imagine London being cheaper than Glasgow/Edinburgh)

What are your thoughts?
I had the question too haha

My rent was £495 per month plus add in bus is about £40 a month, electricity is expensive I'd estimate £100 a month then my internet plus I had TV too was £70ish, I think. Cell phone over there was about £70. This is all per month. Basically I lived alone and probably not the most frugally and I still had plenty for living and two flights home each year. If you live with people you'll save some money. I lived outside the main city centre so it was cheaper than in city center but probably a little more than if you have a roommate or two. Overall I was still able to live plenty comfortably.

ETA: this was for Edinburgh. Not sure how expensive Glasgow is but I don't it is much more.

What Meurks said!! That's super helpful!!!

although now I may bombard you with questions 🙂

What exactly do you get for your rent? An apartment? This may sound nieve, but are there apartment complexes like we're used to here that are efficient for students, or is it more of a renting out a basement/attic/floor situation (I've been marathoning Sherlock, my apologies)?

That rent gets you a small area of grass in the park about 5 miles from the bus stop...

Rightmove.co.uk is a great site for looking for properties, and it also lets you view properties on a map, so if you know the general area you want to be in but don't know the postcode (or if the nicer area is only a small fraction of a postcode >_>) you can easily find places in an area you want. That should help you get an idea of prices too - i don't know what theyre like in glasgow. In edinburgh you can find a decent place fairly central (certainly in a studenty area) for anywhere from £500-1000 dependant on size, bedrooms, etc.

The types of flats vary. in edinburgh there are buildings called tenements, but theyre not a negative thing that the word implies in the US, just buildings with flats in. If you google tenements edinburgh you can see some examples. Studios, 1bdrm, 2 bdrm, and some places have large 4-5 bedroom flats which groups of students may all let together and flat share. There are also some newer apartment buildings that are a bit more modern and perhaps more like apartment conmplexes you might be familiar with. If you go out of the city centre or close to the vet school campus you could rent a little terraced house or the upper floor of a small semidetached house etc.

@DVMDream were you paying cost of the phone itself in your monthly phone bill? 😵 i only pay £20 a month for phone, but im not paying for the cost of the mobile.

I had a UK cellphone with an unlimited data plan, unlimited texts and unlimited minutes. I got really lucky because it is hard to get approved for a phone over there with no credit but the lady working at t-mobile kept trying until it finally went through.

I lived just outside of London up until college, so if anyone has any questions about general UK life, feel free to PM me. I loved it there (hence why I applied to RVC... returning home would be a dream!).

Great input guys!!

Which leads me to my next question.... Pets...

How difficult is it to find a place that will let you have dogs? I have 2 Havanese that have to come with me.

Id definitely recommend starting your search well in advance. There are places out there who take pets (my dog came with me) but you might have to compromise (pay a higher security deposit, maybe not live in your ideal spot, maybe find a place that isnt strictly a 'student let' (a lot of places rent sep-may to fit term time specifically). That being said, i found a flat in a great location, though i did pay slightly higher security deposit. I insisted i get approval in writing as well confirming my dog was allowed.
If you end up going to edinburgh, be very careful with your timing as the Festival in august can make finding a place a little bit difficult.

When i was looking, i was very up front that i had a dog and very proactive in emphasising that he was an adult dog, housetrained, non destructive, vaccinated/microchipped/neutered etc, and that i was a vet student and an older student rather than a partying 18 yr old.
Dogs trust has a site with advice for finding lets that will take dogs and how to make a good case for your dog with hesitant landlords. Www.letswithpets.org.uk
Two little havanese i wouldnt think would cause much trouble as theyre so small (i said right away my dog was 10kg and used to living in flats).

Also i highly recommend the QM2 for travelling over with them ^_^ i had a great time. Reserve a kennel spot now though >_> you dont have to pay full price until april or may and you get deposit back if you cancel before the deadline 😛

Feel free to pm me if you have more q's ^_^

For Glasgow living expenses, on average I paid:

Rent: 300-350GBP /mo (West End prices are a little higher than Anniesland)
Utilities: 50-100 GBP / mo
Internet: 20-30 GBP / mo
Bus: 85 GBP for ten week student pass, but if you live in Anniesland you won't need that and rent is cheaper
Food: ~100 GBP/mo
Cell Phone: 23 GBP / mo and free phone with a 2 yr contract ( I had a Droid, Iphone plans tended to be more like 30-35/month)

Hope that helps!

I'm not sure what your experience as far as renting was like shortnsweet. It seems like 300-350GBP/mo might be more applicable to students who chose flatmates rather than living alone.

So who's freaking out about interviews? I only applied to Glasgow and Edinburgh and have interviews at both, two days apart. I have a degree in history from a different Scottish uni but have done 2 1/2 years of pre-vet at my local state campus so Edinburgh said this summer they would consider me for both the 4 and 5 year programs.

My interview invitation didn't specify which program I was interviewing for but based on reading this forum it sounds like the 4 year program interviews are in January? Does that sound right?

Are you in the US or UK now? I think for the most part we're applying from the US, so I'm not sure that the dates will correlate. Its also possible they have the same dates for both.

Regardless, welcome to the thread 🙂

I'm American so I got kicked out of the UK after graduation (2012) and have done all my pre-reqs in the US.

My interviews are the first week of February and I'm really freaking nervous. My current backup plan is to drink a lot and then apply again. Applying to only two schools is starting to feel like an increasingly bigger gamble...

Oh...yes... that was with flatmates....but not many of my friends lived alone.
I had 4 flatmates first year, 2 2-4th year and those were both West end flats, and then one final year and that was in Anniesland.

Anyone know if UC Dublin requires fall transcripts?
Thanks!

Greetings, I'm new to SDN and want to join the UK thread. I received an interview with the R(D)SVS on Feb. 8th, 2015 in NYC. Who else out there applied to R(D)SVS?!

My interests are in wildlife medicine so I'd love to hear from R(D)SVS students on their experiences.

I am really nervous for MMI! And their group activity haha! Good luck to you!

My RVC interview is Friday, and my Edinburgh interview is February 10th. I'm so nervous, I don't know what to expect. I want to prepare but I'm going to end up winging it because I don't know how!!

Hey if anyone from out of town wants me to give them a tour of nyc today I'd be more than happy to ! Heading to the rvc interview now, if you see me, say hey 🙂 I'll be the one in the gold shirt haha

These are my thoughts exactly! I'll be at the San Francisco one tomorrow.

I'll be there too guys!!! I'll be wearing a navy blue pin striped suit and I'll have a cram colored clutch and a black notebook thing 🙂

So I met one SDN'er at my RVC interview today!! How did you guys feel about it? I actually felt really good after mine!!!

So are there any RVC current students on here? If so, would anyone like to PM me because I have some questions about housing 🙂 (should I be lucky enough to get accepted)

I did a masters there and lived in college grove so I can answer some questions about the on site housing as well as living offsite when you're based in Camden. 🙂

Great, th a ks guys!! I've chatted with some people about taking pets to Edinburgh and glasgow and it seems possible, but I have to take a dog with me,and from what I've looked at in London, that May be impossible....
Does anyone live in Hertfordshire and commute to Camden? It seems like pet friendly housing may be more readily available there?

When do you think decisions will be out ? Hahaha I'm already antsy although I'm pretty sure some of my interview answers sounded ridiculous~

I used to live in London and had my dog there with me, it is possible ^_^ again, may be a bit tricky/more work to find a place (and might have to compromise a little on just where) but there are places out there. London isn't the doggiest of cities in general (at least it wasn't 4-5 years ago), Edinburgh is filled with dogs by contrast even in the city centre (as is NYC where I was before both london and here). Lots of dogs running amok around Hampstead's Heath though, which isn't too far from RVC, some nice areas around there iirc.

eta: i used to live around the corner from baker st with my dog, tiniest flat ever but cheap and allowed the dog ^_^ regent's park is lovely

I'm also a final year at Rvc. I brought my dog with me here, and just lived in potters bar all four years, and commuted into Camden for the first year. It's not a bad commute (though not cheap!), and it was nice to have more space and a backyard. But it definitely makes you less social, since you have to get home to in the evenings and can't just pop out for a drink etc. A few classmates managed to have pets and live in the greater London area, they just went a bit north of Camden, like Hampstead area... So it's definitely doable! Let me know if you have any questions...

It said that the initial interview date in NYC had been filled, so I could choose from dates in Jan in SanFran or a date in Feb in NYC... but we all got our e-mails today right? Odd...anyway, did you guys choose your date or was it assigned to you?

Do you know what the February date was? Just starting to wonder when they'll likely be done interviewing so we can get a better idea of when we might start to hear back.

Anybody else attending the Glasgow interview in NYC on Monday?

Thanks so much!
I just got in!
Wow Glasgow lets you know if you get in or not right after your interview?! (I hope I am understanding this right...) then congrats!!

Good Luck to everyone interviewing for RDSVS in San Fran! apparently our MMI is going to last 5.5 hours. Thats got to be the longest interview ever!

I don't know what they usually do but I got an email 10 hours after I had my interview.
I didn't apply to Glasgow so I don't know either but Congratulations again!! 🙂

I think they'll let you know on the day of if you're on the last interview day. Otherwise, they'll email you. This is just speculation of course.

Anyone interviewing for Glasgow today ?
