I lived in Philly from age 7-18 so know the area very well. There's a TON you can do. I personally would recommend going to the waterfront, Penn's Landing area near South Street. Definitely buy a pretzel off the street.
I just got my interview invite in the mail today; I'm excited. Have to reschedule it though. Do they only interview certain days of the week?
Mmm, right off the street with a little grime...that's the only way to go when you're in Philthadelphia.![]()

To those that have interviewed at UMDNJ, was anyone else appalled at the smell coming from the anatomy lab????
when i interviewed there were no cadavers on the tables. i forget why...
now you're scaring me.![]()
They do not take anatomy until second semester, so that is why there were no cadavers. Although I think PBL students might take anatomy first semester. But our tour guide couldnt get into the anatomy lab anyways. I am just commenting on the smell as we walked through the histology lab that she indicated as coming from the anatomy lab. 😱
I didn't know UMDNJ had PBL? and yeah when i interviewed, it was their first semester so no anatomy no cadavers and no smell.
speaking of 2nd semester... did anyone learn anything about next year's curriculum on interview day? when i interviewed they were clueless about next year's changes.
Well for things to do you have center city philly, chinatown/french district/shopping/convention center/south street/sports (college and professional)/museums/liberty bell - constitutional center/ etc ... there are tons of things to DO but it depends on your time. Most of them you can't do in just a few hrs. 🙂
Do I look like Nicholas Cage?Well, if you make a detour to the National Archives in Washington D.C., you can steal the Declaration of Independance, go through Franklin's letters, and locate the brick at the liberty bell tower that will give you the glasses that will show you the way to the next clue to find the National Treasure.

The current 1st year class was scheduled to have the "new & improved" 3C curriculum but the complete switch was postponed for a year because of the various UMDNJ-wide and SOM-specific issues. Instead, 2010 has a transition year w/aspects of the old, lecture-based curriculum and aspects of the new, more problem/case-based learning. Portions of 2nd year (H&Ps, biostats/epidemiology, etc) are included so it's a combo curriculum. And a PBL class was accepted. At the Oct. 12th student govt meeting, the administration said that they're still working on the new curriculum, but it's expected to be in place for 2011.speaking of 2nd semester... did anyone learn anything about next year's curriculum on interview day? when i interviewed they were clueless about next year's changes.

Good luck!
Class of 2009
BTW if anyone has an interview on Oct. 26th, I'll be giving the tour🙂

thanks for the info.
i loved SOM, and it's been my top choice, but it's really hard to make a final decision without knowing about the curriculum changes. for example, if they took away block exams that would be a big turn off for me...
Its near Rittenhouse which was referred to by some as french district. Walk around north of rittenhouse and you'll see the street signs 🙂Ok ... I thought I knew Philadelphia pretty well. Where the hell is the "french district?"😕 😕 😕

How long after you were complete did you find out about an interview? I do not know if I am being impatient but it has been 1 week and I have not heard a thing. I am trying not to get anxious about it, but it is hard.
Maybe if you're in-state it is faster, but I was complete for a few weeks b4 being invited.

I didn't get a call from them
I just got my interview invite today. (snailmail for December 5th)
I'm coming from St. Louis and my geographical knowledge of NJ is very limited... so a few questions for the very helpful UMDNJ vets in this thread:
Which airport would you guys recommend I fly into?
Unfortuately, my interview will be about a month before my 25th birthday, so I guess renting a car is out. How does one generally get to the campus from the airport and how far is it?
Thanks.
I would vote flying into Philly, about 12 miles from UNDMJ, supposedly. You can take New Jersey transit, probably (that's a train). I'd just google Stratford and find commuter possibilities.
Philly has the closest airport, and for most rental car companies you have to be 21 - your best bet is to rent a car - even with the addtional $5-20 "under 25" fee.
I just received my interview packet!! I'm interviewing on Nov. 10 😀
dancer20, i'm interviewing the same date! i'll be there for the tour! see you then
nope...
are they still going to call at this point? or will they just send letters?
