UMDNJ Interview

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I lived in Philly from age 7-18 so know the area very well. There's a TON you can do. I personally would recommend going to the waterfront, Penn's Landing area near South Street. Definitely buy a pretzel off the street.

I just got my interview invite in the mail today; I'm excited. Have to reschedule it though. Do they only interview certain days of the week?

haha i lived in philly/south jersey all my life and i would NEVER buy a pretzel off the street! hahahahha

Mmm, right off the street with a little grime...that's the only way to go when you're in Philthadelphia.

Okay so - so far we've got cheese steak and pretzels....
That's not stuff to do - that's stuff to EAT!! LOL!

Well for things to do you have center city philly, chinatown/french district/shopping/convention center/south street/sports (college and professional)/museums/liberty bell - constitutional center/ etc ... there are tons of things to DO but it depends on your time. Most of them you can't do in just a few hrs. 🙂

To those that have interviewed at UMDNJ, was anyone else appalled at the smell coming from the anatomy lab????

They do not take anatomy until second semester, so that is why there were no cadavers. Although I think PBL students might take anatomy first semester. But our tour guide couldnt get into the anatomy lab anyways. I am just commenting on the smell as we walked through the histology lab that she indicated as coming from the anatomy lab. 😱

I didn't know UMDNJ had PBL? and yeah when i interviewed, it was their first semester so no anatomy no cadavers and no smell.

speaking of 2nd semester... did anyone learn anything about next year's curriculum on interview day? when i interviewed they were clueless about next year's changes.

Now I'm not sure which is worse, a terrible smell coming from anatomy lab when there ARE cadavers in there, which is more expected - or a terrible smell when there AREN'T any cadavers around??!! Now I'm worried!!

sorry, didnt mean to get people worried. I guess it was just a fluke on the day of my interview, but seriously my eyes were tearing up it was so bad. UMDNJ has 7 PBL students i think, but they only offer it during even years, so this year's entering class will not have any PBL.

yea, i got the same feeling.

Well, if you make a detour to the National Archives in Washington D.C., you can steal the Declaration of Independance, go through Franklin's letters, and locate the brick at the liberty bell tower that will give you the glasses that will show you the way to the next clue to find the National Treasure.

Do I look like Nicholas Cage?

Yeah it was supposed to change for this year, but they decided not to about 2 weeks before classes started, so it will probably be the same for next year.

Adcomm meets on Friday............................

The current 1st year class was scheduled to have the "new & improved" 3C curriculum but the complete switch was postponed for a year because of the various UMDNJ-wide and SOM-specific issues. Instead, 2010 has a transition year w/aspects of the old, lecture-based curriculum and aspects of the new, more problem/case-based learning. Portions of 2nd year (H&Ps, biostats/epidemiology, etc) are included so it's a combo curriculum. And a PBL class was accepted. At the Oct. 12th student govt meeting, the administration said that they're still working on the new curriculum, but it's expected to be in place for 2011.
Good luck!
Class of 2009
BTW if anyone has an interview on Oct. 26th, I'll be giving the tour🙂

thanks for the info.
i loved SOM, and it's been my top choice, but it's really hard to make a final decision without knowing about the curriculum changes. for example, if they took away block exams that would be a big turn off for me...

Ok ... I thought I knew Philadelphia pretty well. Where the hell is the "french district?"😕 😕 😕

Fair enough. I know I felt awkward about how to broach the topic when I did tours last year - and I'm in student govt so I know a bit more than other classmates. Specifically, the Acad Affairs Dean said that there will be more small group discussions and more case-based presentations but that the details still are being worked on. I think the transition year curriculum has a lot of good points so I would hope that the switch-over would be positive.

Its near Rittenhouse which was referred to by some as french district. Walk around north of rittenhouse and you'll see the street signs 🙂

You mean north of Rittenhouse Square? Never knew that. Learn something new every day. Next thing someone will tell me is that there are some historic sites in Philadelphia.

How long after you were complete did you find out about an interview? I do not know if I am being impatient but it has been 1 week and I have not heard a thing. I am trying not to get anxious about it, but it is hard.

Maybe if you're in-state it is faster, but I was complete for a few weeks b4 being invited.

i got my interview after 3 weeks of being complete (and i'm from nj)

It probably took about a month for me to hear back from them about the intervew; I think I was complete in mid-September. I'm an out-of-stater.

Anyone get a phone call from UMDNJ today????????????

anyone going to 11/10 interview? hope to meet some of you guys there!

I just got my interview invite today. (snailmail for December 5th)

I'm coming from St. Louis and my geographical knowledge of NJ is very limited... so a few questions for the very helpful UMDNJ vets in this thread:

Which airport would you guys recommend I fly into?

Unfortuately, my interview will be about a month before my 25th birthday, so I guess renting a car is out. How does one generally get to the campus from the airport and how far is it?

Thanks.

I would vote flying into Philly, about 12 miles from UNDMJ, supposedly. You can take New Jersey transit, probably (that's a train). I'd just google Stratford and find commuter possibilities.

Philly has the closest airport, and for most rental car companies you have to be 21 - your best bet is to rent a car - even with the addtional $5-20 "under 25" fee.

I agree on the whole renting a car thing, especially if UMDNJ is one of your top choices becuase something people always seem to forget is once you're in, its kind of a whirl wind and it might serve you well to just look around at a few apts in the area to get a general idea of where you might wanna live. I know a few students that did everything online and then were not too happy with the results. If you let Paula know that's what you want to do, she has apt guides created by the students with helpful info and then you could just take a ride and see what looks good. Because let's face it, if you get in are you really going to want to fly back tolook for an apt?

if you're staying over night check out the Hampton Inn on Laurel Oak rd in Voorhees (near Olive Garden) and mention that you're a UMDNJ student (even if you're just interviewing) and they'll give you a nice discount on your room. Follow White Horse Rd into Stratford to find the school, it's only a couple miles, 10 min ride at most.

I posted the answer on another thread.
I called admissions and was told that the comittee met Friday and a decision has been made but they will not notify the applicants until the end of this week. So expect an answer in the later part of the week.
