docbill said:steve can prob answer that for you.
Btw, why are you taking Bioch if you are in BCM 2010???
ShyRem said:Steve would be fozziewan.
fozziewan said:gee, thanks for throwing me to the wolves everyone. 🙄
I'm currently enrolled in the distance biochemistry course. So far, its good. I find it requires self-discipline to stay focused on watching the dvd lectures, objectives, study questions and taking the exams. If you need a biochem class (non-lab based) and can afford the tuition then I suggest it. I enjoy the clinical based examples throughout each chapter. It helps solidify learning of the material in a quasi-practical sense. I need to take the on-campus final by the first week of May. Therefore, I need to get crackin!
Oh, on a side note, I found out yesterday that I was selected by the Navy for the HPSP scholarship I applied fo!!!! 😀 👍
So, looks like I won't be needing to worry about loans out the rear.

quick question. Do any of you, espcially those who have spent some time in the area know of any equestrian centers in the area? I ride now, and will def be looking for a barn in the area... a great way to release some stress 🙂
If any of you know of anywhere, that would be great.
Note: I am not looking to board (my horse will stay in CT) just ride, take some lessons etc. Preferably somewhere down to earth, I hate snobby horse farms 🙂
Thanks,
Jess
-Oh, and congrats Steve! Thanks for serving!
Hi, I too am part of class 2010 and am in the process of looking for a place to stay. From what I've been told is that will be one of our biggest challenges. I agree with you about the snow in Colorado, I lived in Colorado Springs for three years.ShyRem said:my husband and kids have skis... but I think the snow in Maine can't be as good as the snow in Colorado. We're gonna trade mountains (and I mean 10,000 ft mountains) and thin air for ocean view. 🙂

Docbill actually found me on my space and told me to join so here I am. Fozziewan knows me very well too but probably doesn't like to admit it haha.

splat said:Hi guys, I'll be joining the class of 2010 as well! Just want to say "hello" to my fellow classmates. I'm moving from Boston with my husband and newborn baby. You can add me to the list - I'm 31.
Does anybody know the schedule of classes for the first block? I need to plan daycare. I know it's something close to 9 to 5 due to anatomy lab - but I'd love to look at a class schedule from last year's class if possible. Can't seem to find it on the website.

I know spring is just starting and winter is FINALLY ending but I was checking out the all-east college pass and it's pretty cheap (if you buy in like October)... plus Sunday River is like 1.5 hours ish! I'm so excited to be coming back to good ol' New England for some real riding😀
and welcome, Darkiris and splat 🙂

splat said:Can one of the current medical students fill me in on the class schedule during the first block of the first year? Do classes begin at 8am or 9am? What time is anat lab generally over? Are there any breaks inbetween? How often does the average student stay on campus after classes (for anatomy lab)?
SectoidBob said:I was actually looking for my old first semester schedule in response to your first post but I can't find it, so i'm going purely on recollection here. Also, I know they're changing your anatomy schedule from four days a week to five! 😱 Or at least that's the scuttlebutt, so please, take everything I say with a grain of salt. Here's your schedule up until around the middle of October. Embryology will wrap up quickly, and will then be replaced by Biochem. Histo will finish mid november and be replaced by Immunology. Remember, these are just my experiences, and things might be different for your class.
There is a 10 minute break at the end of every 50 minutes of class, and there are no classes scheduled between 12 and 1. Usually there are interesting but not manditory lectures over lunch.
Anatomy: Roughly an hour of lecture and 3 hours of dissection per day. You probably will have to come in at other times to get as much done as you half to though. For us it was 3 mornings a week plus wednesday afternoon. 8-12 or 1-5. Some days you'll finish your dissection early, but you'll want to get ahead for days when you lag behind. Depending on how easily anatomy comes to you, and your dissection group, you should count on spending at least a little extra time in here working. And definately expect to put in some long hours studying in there before the tests.
Histology: A largely unnecessary 2 hour class once or twice a week, and then an 1.5 hour lab section once a week. Lab was always in the afternoon, usually monday. Half the class goes in 1-230, then the other half 230-4.
Embryology: A two hour lecture once or twice a week. I seem to remember friday afternoons for this one.
OPP: This was always tuesday morning 9-12 for us. Hour lecture, two hour lab. Manditory.
Foundations of Doctoring: This was always 8-12 Wednesday for us. Two hours of lecture, two hours of small groups/H&P/cases etc. Also Manditory.
Generally, classes start at 8 in the morning and generally wrap at either 3 or 5. Thursday afternoons will probably be free for you guys, unless you have a preceptorship assignment, in which case you go out with a doc for 4 hours.
You will quickly learn what classes you are going to go to, and which ones you are not. Very few people go to all the classes. Only OPP and FOD are required classes.
Hope that helps,
Steve R.
PS: The rafting trip is on this year!!! You should definately consider doing it cause it ROCKED last year. 👍 👍 Expect info in a mailing in a month or so.
PSS: Our room for rent is 450 a month! Great deal! All utilities included! It's no clifford street pub but we get by 😉
docbill said:Okay Everyone,
I decided to start looking for a place. In case someone gets a place and this matches.
Not looking for something too fancy (300-400$- cheaper the better).
Prefer on the beach close to the school, 5-20 min walk (I enjoy walking).
It Could be A small room (3 or 4 walls), enough for bed and desk.
A must in a roommate:
-CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN.. did I mention CLEAN
-RESPECTFUL
-NO smoking
-NO pets (sorry, its that clean thing)
-Friendly, NOT MOODY and BITCHY (guys and girls)
-Someone who would clean up afterthemselves
-Someone who is not lazy
-Somone who doesn't blast the music or TV.
-DEFINTELY NOT one who runs around screaming the sky is falling, when a test in coming up.
-Prefer a person in my age range
-A must is someone who exchanges acts of kindness*
*For example, I don't mind sharing my stuff with my roomate, example, I know how to cook, so when I do have time, I make enough and prefer to share. If I make coffee, I share. If I am going to pick up something I don't mind getting roomy something along the way. etcc... etc.. etc..
