Well if you look at it, its not really much. NO frat boy and no kids. Someone respectful.. R-E-S-P.... something something.. with music

I don't know about you, but I don't want to be clean up after anyone. 😡

BTW, I don't mind sharing with a female.

Read: If you are a hot female, please be my roommate! Even if you are above average, you can room with me too. 😛

Just messing with ya Doc. BTW, I find out next week, but even if I dont get in, hopefully I can maybe meet some of you guys if you are ever in the area.

Don't need to be hot.. average + 1. I mean, come on, there is nothing better than seeing a beautiful face at home.. Hehehehe... From what I was told, we will all get sick of each other within the first semester.

Yeah definitely keep us updated, remember that things always workout one way or another. It is a good sign you did not get a rejection yet. Que Sera Sera. Keep your head up.

Hey,
I'm new to SDN but wanted to congratulate all who've been accepted!

I just accepted a spot in UNECOM's class of 2010! I'm so excited!!!

Thanks Wook and everyone else. I should find out either tomorrow or Tuesday. So needless to say, I am pretty freaking nervous. I actually got some good news on Friday though. My dad went down to see a DO I set him up with for his back and I went with him. I told the Doc about applying to UNECOM (he already knew because my dad had told him before)and he asked me all kinds of questions and told me all kinds of stuff. Then out of the blue he offered to write to Dr. Buser, the new dean, for me. I told him that my file was being decided on on Saturday so he said he would call him instead. Come to find out, Dr. Delisi and Dr. Buser are friends. So hopefully he called Dr. Buser and that will help me a lot. Guess we will have to see. Take care everyone, and as soon as I know, you all will know too.

Jonb,
Yeah, I was pretty pumped when I found that out. I just hope its not too late for me. If it is, then I will just apply again, and maybe Dr. Delisi will write me a rec next year. But whatever happens happens. How you enjoying the nice New England weather up there? Its about 65 here in NH. I am loving it.

Hi Guys,

I looked around Biddeford this weekend, and I've put down my security deposit for a two year lease for a place that I really liked. The problem is that the rent is 725.00 a month, with heat and hot water included. The school tuition is around 38k plus misc fee's = probably 40k. i know the room and board allowance is 11k for the whole year (pays for 10 month). So what i figured 40k plus 11k = 51k in financial aid. However, i read some previous posts mentioning 61k in financial awarded to them. does that means i'll have 21k to budget or only still have 11k? I need to know if i'm going to be broke or not. 😡

Anybody know year-round beach rental's 😀 let me know.. teehee! 😱

Hey all, just wanted to let you know i got my acceptance last week and am sending my deposit in tomorrow, looking forward to joining you all in the fall.

Hey Kev, I think shyrem had the 61k financial package. That may be because she has a family. I am only budgeting ~52k for first year (35 tuition + 5-6k insurance, fees and books + 11-12k Living). IF ANYONE HAS DIFFERENT NUMBERS or if I made a mistake please correct me.

Also Kev, I saw your post on pipeline, tissue engineering is a cool field. What tissue/organ did you work on?

I think Steve (from Saratoga, NY) also posted 61k (and he is going with the HSPS) with the military scholarship (also he received the 1000 dollar osteopathic scholarship). As of right now, i added up expenses with 725.00 a month rent.. my expenses will be around 20k (with 11k allowance will leave me 9k short). Let's get a confirmation here guys 🙂.

Hey Bilal, yeah tissue engineering is really cool it is the future. (where new tissue/organ/bone) can be regenerated for medical implants replacing damaged tissue. Surgery will be popular again. 🙂 In 10 years time we should able to see at least something (they have done something simlar at the children's hospital in Boston, growing a new bladder and blood vessel.

I worked with pre-osteoblasts (undifferentiated) for bone/cartilage regeneration, my colleagues were working on ACL regeneration. I'm also working in a biopharmaceutical company. So i'm all about medicine.. except now I can both practice and research in the field instead of always researching and see no action. heh.

Hi all!! 🙂
I am so jumping the gun here, but I interviewed at UNECOM this past week and I hoping for some good news in a few days!! You all seem like such a great bunch...
Rob--I have been reading your posts and I am rooting for you all the way! You have such a sincere passion to do this and I respect your positive thinking and endurance despite the long wait.....I hope you get some good news!! :luck:
DrKeys--Your experience is very interesting! I worked at an organ and tissue procurement organization coordinating tissue recoveries and had the opportunity to visit MTF in NJ (Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation) and learn more about how these tissues are actually processed. It is facinating. I would love to hear more about your work! I'm a tissue recipient as well (anterior tibialis tendon for my busted ACL) so my respect for this field comes from a personal level as well.
I think one of the most fun and interesting things about starting med school will be to learn about your fellow classmates and their experiences within the field.
Hopefully, I will be posting again with some good news! 🙂

I went to the FA page of UNECOM and added all the expenses:

Tuition 37330
Books/Equip 2850
Computer 2000
Room/Board 11000
Travel 4000
Personal 1600
Insurance 2207
Misc/Other (none)

Total: 60987

So I'm missing something since my aid package was $61,880 (but I must be pretty darn close).

Thank you ShyRem for confirming. I just didn't see the travel and personal expenses on there. I thought it was only for 3rd and 4th years. However, you have the FA award already, and the math works out right.. so you must be correct. In that case.. the 725.00 per month apartment will work out for me.. because I really love that place.. Thank you

Beachbunny, I would be happy to tell you more about it, because i'm a big nerd, and I love science haha 😀. I'm going to try to get a NIH fellowship research position during the summer and earn some money and experience. However, I'm sure as the day gets close...everybody on here will meet.. soon. Good luck with everyone else on finding housing.. (the beach houses are great, there are some year round-two bedrooms there). I found one like right next to the school and the beach.. (somebody already took it) 🙁.

I'm so frustrated with the UNECOM admissions staff!!!

So the committee met for a final meeting on April 1st, and prior to that I was on put on a high priority waiting list. So I called today to ask whether any further decision had been made or not and they said I'll have to wait till the end of the week to find out because the files are with the dean!

I already have another acceptance and have sent in my deposit, but UNECOM still remains as my top choice because of its geographical proximity to my family (I'm from MA).

I'm contemplating calling the dean directly..because I can't take the waiting anymore..I mean, I'm perfectly fine planning on attending the other school I got into, but I dont' want to have to commit to living accomodations and a roommate only to find out that UNECOM has a seat for me in May or something...

Ok, I'm done venting 🙂

Anybody else having similar issues? Have any of you ever spoken to the dean or anybody besides Lisa?

Welcome to the waitlist game, mystic. Personally, there is only one school that has ever been higher on my list than UNECOM - I withdrew from several schools once UNE accepted me - and that school has me on the waitlist.

Hey Shyrem, thanks for the consolation.

If that school were to accept you though, would you drop all your arrangments and plans that you've made to attend UNECOM?

It's just really frustrating to make all these future arrangments and then have to drop them last minute...I don't know if I could handle that financially ...although I guess in the big picture I'd evenutally end up saving a little more money if I attend UNECOM.

Lisa basically said that my acceptance is guaranteed for the Fall of 2007, and this years acceptance is based on how many of the previously accepted students withdraw...

I really really really dont' want to wait till the Fall of 2007 (although its nice to know its guranteed)..so if anybody out there is feeling a little iffy about UNECOM, throw me a dime here and go to that other wonderful school that accepted you..hehe 🙄

*Keeping my fingers crossed*

Hey Mystic, I understand that its frustrating, but remember it it only another week. You waited all this time, what is another week?

If you don't hear back then you can decide what is best to do... either way I think you will be just fine for time wise to get all your stuff organized.

Good luck and keep us updated. 👍

Hey everyone. I received my acceptance to UNECOM a few months ago, and have all my deposits down. Liked the school, but I'm not totally sure if I'll be there this fall though, as I'm waitlisted at a few other schools. I imagine that I'll know better after May 15th when people can no longer hold multiple acceptances, and then the whole domino effect will take place.

Just to add to the financial aid discussion, I believe I received $61K for aid from my award letter. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to the whole financial aid thing, so do I have to now take this award letter and find a lender to give me the best "price"?

Mystic, my husband and I have made a deadline date. If by that date I haven't gotten off the waitlist, we would then go forward with moving to Maine. Now, if I then got off the waitlist after that date but before we bought a house, before my husband got a job, etc. then we would seriously need to discuss the situation. The waitlist place has better job opportunities for my husband, better schools for my children, and more affordable housing. The other costs are not much different, however, and I would be thrilled to attend either school - the breaking points are for my family and living situations.

Oh - markss, I believe now we have to do applications for our supplemental loans after we find a lender. Maine MedLoans looks best mainly because it has no upper limit. THE has an aggregate limit that will be exceeded if you get full aid and have any (ANY) outstanding undergrad loans. They recommend you do NOT apply more than 90 days before the start of school - I'm planning on filling out those forms June 1. You should look at your credit history and it's worth paying the extra $6 for the credit score. Go to www.annualcreditreport.com - you are entitled to one free credit report every 12 months at that site, but the score is the extra fee. Worth the peace of mind to know your terms up front.

I hear ya. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one going through this though 🙂

I realize it's the homestretch now, but I had just kept telling myself to keep serene till April 1st. Now I'm getting VERY restless.

I called the Dean of Admissions just now, her secretary took down a message and said that he'd make sure she called me back today. I hope that I can get a bit more of a resolution on this before sunset today.

Wish me luck 🙂

Shyrem:

How long after you filled out the FAFSA and sent in your FA sheet for UNECOM did you hear back from financial aid and receive your $61,880 aid package? I am a little nervous about all this financial aid, and feel I should be doing something more. What was your procedure, if you don't mind me asking??

Anybody:

Any advice for a first time loan applicant?

Thanks!

The passes to Sunday River come in the shape of regular tickets, all in one passes, All East passes and mEtickets; as long as we still qualify as being 'full-time' college students, the college All East passes are $375 from now until 10.24.06. If you think about how much it costs for one day of skiing, the All East pass gives you a whole season for the price of 6 skiing days! There are no blackout dates and it is unlimited. If you wanted to try out the Sunday-Friday all East pass, there are black out dates (including all Saturdays), but it only costs $299.

I *mapquested* it from the school and it says that it is 2 hours flat... so 1.5 hours from portland 👍

My FAFSA was submitted 2/1 or so and my FA sheet was turned in by the end of Feb. I got my FA award notice about two weeks ago. I think. About. Time is really kinda just mushing together these days.....

Oh- and Lui, I just waited. A lot. Do the FAFSA, turn in your supp FA form, and wait. Wait some more. And... wait for it..... wait some more.

So the award was all from one place (T.H.E.)? Or did you have to persue other places to complete the package once you received the info from UNECOM?

Hope you don't mind me asking all these questions!!

Thanks

P.S. If you need advice on finding housing around the area and good schools for the kids -- I might be able to help!

Lui, UNECOM sets the amount of loans you are eligible for (the FA award letter). From there you have to apply for the loans yourself, and the loans are subject to the limits in the FA award letter. There is electronic communication between UNE and your lender (which is why there are preferred lenders - I suppose for them the uplink is already in place) to determine the amount of loan disbursed each semester, and the funds are transferred electronically. When dealing with a preferred lender the process moves a bit more quickly and your funds are received by UNECOM in a timely fashion - thereby ensuring you get your FA check at the beginning of the semester in a timely fashion as well. All funds are sent from your lender to UNECOM, which takes out your fees and tuition and gives you a check for the rest each semester.

Ah, it seems that UNE will process the Stafford loans from THE. Your alternative loans you must apply for:

UNE's Preferred Lender For Your Federal Stafford Loan
If this will be the first time that you will be borrowing a Federal Stafford Loan at the University of New England, we will process your Federal Stafford Loan eligibility through our preferred lender, Total Higher Education (T.H.E.), unless you notify us otherwise. T.H.E. borrowers pay zero guarantee and origination fees (lenders may charge up to 4% in processing fees). Borrowers also immediately qualify for the T.H.E. Bonus at the start of repayment. The T.H.E. Bonus can return as much as 8% or more of the borrower's outstanding loan balance to the borrower during the repayment period. The T.H.E Bonus is currently being paid out as a monthly credit equal to an annualized interest rate discount of 1.3% and is paid to all borrowers in repayment and less than 60 days delinquent. The T.H.E. Bonus is awarded as a reduction in interest cost. This amount is based on current market conditions and portfolio performance and is therefore subject to change. Visit T.H.E. for additional information.

Alternative Loans
Students often turn to alternative loans as a means of providing additional financial resources for living expenses while attending the University. In general, these loans do not have interest rate "caps", nor can they be consolidated with federal student loans like Stafford Loans.

Another important difference between alternative loans and other types of student loans is the need for the borrower to have satisfactory credit. In some cases, applicants who do not meet the lender's credit criteria may have the option of applying with a credit-worthy co-borrower. It is highly recommended that all potential borrowers examine their credit report prior to applying for an alternative loan. The following credit reporting agencies can provide you with a copy of your credit report. (Residents of some states will be assessed a fee from the credit reporting agency.)

If you wish to borrow an alternative loan, click on Alternative Loan Lenders for a comparison of each program's terms and conditions. Students wishing to apply for an Alternative Loan are strongly encouraged to apply for a pre-approval (no earlier than 90 days prior to the start of classes) through one of our recommended Alternative Loan programs. Students may apply on-line or over the telephone. Paper applications are also available by contacting the lender directly. Once you have applied, allow 4-6 weeks for processing time.

Thanks so much for the info; That is exactly what I wanted to hear. Well, now I'm ready to wait some more. . . and hope our house sells soon, and all goes well in the world of finances (not too much to ask, is it?!?) 😉 😀

I saw that, and have prepared accordingly, but I was still unclear about the timing for it all, or when I should do what. I did what I could first with my credit, and then off with the FAFSA and FA. As far as the rest? I had little idea.

I suppose the feeling that I should be doing something more right now besides just waiting for it all to come to me took over. . . I've got it now -- just wait. . . .

Hey Shyrem, what school are you waiting for? 🙂 i'm curious to know. is it CCOM? or COMP?

Neither. VCU. One of the few allo schools I ranked above UNE (the only other allo was my state school for obvious financial reasons). The jobs for a police officer are plentiful down in that area, and they pay more than the cop jobs in Maine.

hey Guys,

I sent in some new pictures to put on the class page on pipeline. They were taken last year when I interviewed. They are picture of the campus and facilities. I tried to send more, but it kept giving me error message.

BTW, I noticed there where 3 more names added to the list on pipeline. Only 23 people. I guess most are here on SDN, but a few are prob not. Should I send everyone an email.. and tell them to come here, or should we go there.. or should we have our own myspace group page. All options!!!

It'll be cool if you can setup a Myspace website for class of 2010..

hehe. However, it could get really messy with like so many people on there and their friends.

Also..

If i'm borrowing 61k per year.. 61k x 4 = 244k debt.. ouch!!!!!!. I kind of want to keept my loans under 160k. but 160k/4 = 40k a year. 40k = barely covers the tuition. So how does USNEWS calculate how much students are in debt it said around 160k for UNECOM and Tufts (the most expensive school in the country). The math doesn't work out and does not reflect reality either.. so what's going on?

Do you think they factor in HSPS folks? in that case.. it'll be 244K (0.75) + 0k (0.25) given that 25% of the people might be receiving HSPS. then it'll work out to the average in debtness of 160k per student. If that's the case then the statistic is bs!!!! and UNECOM is as expensive as Tufts.

How does the Myspace work? Lot of my friends have it...never gotten into it though. Is it the same kind of thing as these forums are?

So.. a funny picture entered my head (at redwing's expense - sorry, Rob):

Redwing hiding in wait in the bushes/tree by his mailbox, literally jumping on the mailman when he comes to deliver the mail, tearing all the mail open, then running away screaming in frustration when the little envelope from UNE doesn't come yet. (and yes, Rob, my acceptance was a little bitty thin envelope with one folded sheet of paper.)

Rob, I hope you hear soon!!!

Let try this and see how it works.

...

Change of plans.. can someone please volunteer to be moderator for Myspace group page.

Thanks

Carly, my space is like your website. Where your friends also sign up and get added to your site. So everyone is linked my friends with your friends etc...

People post Pictures and comments for you and it will send you an email to your account. If you go to pipeline and click on members, I have my site link on there and Steve M (not fuzzy) has his on there. Steve (Fuzzy), does have a site as well. It is on the bottom of his posts on SDN.

I was under the impression that schools calculated in people with military scholarships and such....just so that their statistics show the average debt. of their students is WAY lower. If you compare just the tuition of Tufts and UNECOM, they're pretty much in the same ballpark. Unfortunately most medical schools are mad expensive......Tufts is just worse because it's located in an expensive city as well.
