You could use that extra money to get A.T. Still's head tattoo'd on your back if you so desired. In fact, I highly recommend that course of action 😀

This may even earn one a few brownie points with the OMT instructors. I'll keep this in mind if my first exam goes poorly. 🙂

MS1 KEG STAND NIGHT!!!

(not part of regularly scheduled orientation proceedings)

Room for rent – a beautiful sunny house centrally located on a quite street close to school, downtown, and grocery with hardwood floors, cozy woodstove study, deck, large yard, laundry, and extra storage space. Plenty of space for privacy and several quiet study areas. Live with 1 or 2 other studious, (slightly) older medical students (currently in first year).

Attached studio (personal kitchenette and bathroom) with private entrance also available.

Email [email protected] for more information.

And welcome class of 2010! We're looking forward to meeting you!

Well, FA offers are starting to be input into U-online, and the catalog for fall is out. We're gonna be busy folks in the fall. 🙂

Haha good call... hmm maybe a COM class of 2010 polar bear swim? 🙂 SarahJC, I PM'd you about housing stuff from the off-campus PDF's that were on the site. Have a good night everyone!

If I do not get any of the military scholarships I've applied for then I'm set for the first year at least based on my financial aid award. I never thought I'd see that much money thrown at me in one sitting. Quite humbling and scary all at the same time. 😱

I have my supplemental loan listed, but no staffords yet. I've been running spreadsheets and projections of payments tho. good thing doctors make a good living. I'm planning on living *very* modestly so I can pay back all these loans fast.

Anyone get any more written communications from UNE yet? Nothing here....

Congrats Class of 2010! Enjoy the feeling and try really hard not to stress about getting ready for school, you'll have plenty of time and plenty of help. I'm a current first year, if you have any questions, comments or concerns feel free to contact me and I'll do what I can to help you out. Take care.

Hey Guys!!!
How is everyone doing?

BTW, you have not lived till you have had eye surgery. Retinal detachment surgery.
WOW. Imagine someone cuting into your eye and try to fix it. CRAZY. Anesth. also is a blast... vomiting and stomach cramps. Actually this experience made me more sure that I want to be a physician.

BTW2, yes everything worked out.

Sounds like a bad reaction to the anesthesia, docbill. Make sure you find out what they gave you so you can tell future surgeons/anesthesiologists NOT to give you that stuff. I've had dozens of surgeries for all kinds of things (literally dozens over my lifetime so far) and I have *never* had that kind of reaction. Ever.

I've never had eye surgery, tho. That's a new one.

I wish you a speedy recovery docbill! I agree, find out the drugs so they are not given to you in the future.

So have you guys find out your Financial award yet? they haven't download my FAFSA yet, but they have everything else.. so no FA award for me yet. but what about you guys? how much did you get in scholarship/grants vs subsidized/unsub/alternate loans. This will give me some idea how much i need to go the bank and get pre-approved for, and not over borrow. If you have some feedback on this...it'll be greatly appreciated.. thanks

-Dr.Keys

dr.keys, it depends on your particular situation for how much to borrow and what your FA award is. However, it looks like the total aid is based on $61,880 for MSI.

Oh - and I didn't get any scholarships/grants. I don't know if they just haven't been given out, or if I'm just not worthy. But just loans so far here.

Jonb, your total aid should be based on something close to that, too. I figure I'll be a good $260K in debt by the time I'm done.

That sounds about right. I'm eligible for ~$20K in supplemental loans and was awarded a COM scholarship of about $1K. The remainder of my awards stem from Fed Subsidized and Unsubs adding up to the aforementioned $61,880.
Yay me! So, DrKeys, your information should be up in the system within the next few weeks along with anyone else who has recently (within the past month or so) submitted their FAFSA and UNE Supplemental Financial Aid form.

Sounds exciting doesn't it? It kind of rolls off your tongue...JUST $260K. No worries.

Rrrrrright.

Shy, How is the house prep going? Well on schedule to sell before/by summer? Is your husband having any luck with the job search in the Biddeford/Saco region?

Thanks steve, now it is time to start doing the budgetting ... math math and more math...:::breaking out the microsoft excel sheet::::

House prep is... going. New new carpet came in yesterday (I don't know if I told you the old new carpet that was put in 4 weeks ago was defective - what a PITA that whole thing was - they loose layed it so it was curled up the walls, not seamed.. nasty), so we can finally finish painting and put baseboards on. And once the weather gets a little warmer (and stops snowing) we can re-side the house. Should be ready by the end of May.

Hey,

Is there anyone else that has applied for the HPSP? I have served 13+ years and I can tell anyone interested that Air Force is the way to go! (no malpractise, no debt and $1300/month. Hopefully I will not have to worry about $200,000 of debt! When are we all going to get together????

Hi Everybody,

I accepted admission to UNECOM last week and have recently discovered SDN. It's great to know you're all out there.

Is anyone still looking for a roommate? I found a two bedroom space in Biddeford Pool that seems to have everything we would need (2 large bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, washer/dryer, kitchen, living room, appliances). It is a year-round rental, has great ocean views (there is ocean in the back yard and across the street) and is 3.1 miles to the campus (I drove it yesterday, 15March). If anyone would like to hear more please send me a private message. It sounds like we would have to act on this quick.

Shy: I was going to ask about the carpet situation. I'm glad you're finally getting it taken care of. Such a pain when you think something is going according to plan then WHAM it doesn't. Anyways, good luck with all the preparations.

-HPSP topic: I've applied to both Navy and AF programs. My packet is on its way to both selection boards. I'm prior AF but leaning more towards the Navy b/c they offer a better Flight Surgery residency. I know a couple of the MSII's who are in HPSP programs who are happy with their decision. Lets not turn this into a recruiting forum though. Its a good option and its nice to know it is out there for those who may be of interest.

shugster: Congrats and welcome!!! 😀 👍

Sounds nice...I wish my wife and I could find a good place like that along the B.Pool area or off of Hills Beach Rd which is year round and also allows cats.

Hey Fozzie- I had good luck with the off-campus housing lists that UNE put out; I already signed my lease for next year. Also, you should check on http://maine.craigslist.com/apa because they list new apartments and homes daily. A few of them are year-round, close to the beach, and advertise to UNE students.

oh and I have been WAITING AND WAITING to get all this financial aid info and now looking at these numbers makes me wish I didn't know how much we have to take on 😛

DocBill- feel better soon! :hardy:

Happy St. Paddy's Day!!
Time for Guinness! (Well, not now but soon, it's 5 O'Clock somewhere)
Or, if you're a fan of the green beer then that will be your poison of choice.
Enjoy everyone and drink responsibly if you so choose to partake in the festivities.
Slainte!

Hey Class of 2010!!!
I'm a current first year UNECOM student and it is SO much fun reading your excited messages! I remeber last year I was psyched for this year! You've made an excellent choice of schools. I LOVE my class!!!
I live with a second year student, which is great because although I love my classmates, I see them all day and every day. It's nice to come home and see what other people in the world are doing. This is why I'm currently looking for a roommate for next year, hopefully one of you!!

Apartment: 2 bedroom, $375/mo, heat and hot water included (this is GREAT during the winter). Washer/dryer. Mostly carpeted, linoleum in the kitchen/bathroom. Near downtown Biddeford. 1 year lease starts in July. Cat's allowed. I have a cat named Marble and I believe she is hypo-allergenic: no problems with people who claim to be allergic to cats!!

Me: 27 years old. Typically quiet, but full of laughter. Clean and reliable. Love to swing dance!

I am leaving for Spring Break this AFTERNOON!! So, if you're interested and I don't respond promptly, don't panic! Email is preferred.

Thanks!

If anyone is interested in an apartment, I am currenlty a 3rd year and will be moving around the middle of August. The apartment is in Biddeford just off Pool Rd. approx. 7 minutes from school. The apartment has 2 bedrms, study type room (?), small bathroom, living area and huge kitchen located on the third floor w/ 8 windows that overlook Saco and, if your lucky, you can sometimes see Mt. Washington. It also has washer and dryer hook-ups and a one car garage (very nice). All-in-all it is a pretty nice place. $725/month. We rent the apartment and two garages for $765/month, however I'm almost certain the rent will increase for the next tenant. If interested shoot me a PM and I can put you in contact with my landlord who is pretty nice BTW.

In all honesty, this was the abosolute best place I could find when I arrived in Biddeford. I only offer this to you all b/c I remember the stresses involved with moving, especially from far away. Good luck!

JJ

Hey Guys,

Feeling better. Can almost open my eye. Actually the doctor told me I may be vomiting. That was the sedative medication. I did not mind it too much. It reminded me of St-Patri's day a few years back.

I wish I could just rent a place for Aug. but I will wait till I get my F1 visa. That is the safest thing to do.

BTW, did you guys check pipeline. Tracy actually put up my picture from Vancouver.

Graigs' list was good. Actually I like that site. Its prety cool. You can find lots of stuff.

BTW, Steve-Fozzie, the award of 1k is that from COM, do you have to apply for financial aid to get that??? There is no where for me to apply.

Also, I was thinking of making my way to Maine, in April, just to take a look around and see what things would be like. We should prob see how many of us are close by.

Happy St. Patty's Day everyone :luck:!

DocBill - I am only about 2.5hrs from Biddeford, and my roommate from college is getting married there the last week in April. (oddly enough, myold roommate grew up there, and decided to settle there, so I have an added bonus for attending UNECOM 😀 ). So, I will be in the area, it would be great if some of us to get together at some point!

Have a safe and fun weekend everyone, we should all live it up while we can, haha.

Hey Bill, glad to read your up and about again. I would contact Financial Aid to find out about what is available/what you are eligible for since you are an international student. "COM scholarship" is how it appears on my award information. I didn't apply for it directly, I guess I met some requirements and was awarded it.
When in April were you planning to head over to Maine? I'm planning to be up there towards the end of the month to look for apartments and also take my biochemistry final exam.

-Cheers,
Steve F.

See, fozzie? waiting for that sweet acceptance letter is by no means indicative of your suitability for UNECOM. You waited for what seemed like *forever* and I got accepted within the week - yet here you are with a scholarship and here I am with nothing but loans loans and more loans.

Irony eh? I just receieved the official financial aid award letter via snail mail.
It's exciting yet frightening all at the same time. If it were up to me, you would definitely get a scholarship for the fact that you're trekking to Maine from Colorado with a family and also had to deal with replacing carpet twice oh and not to mention the big bad safe/bank vault you have to deal with. 😉
That must warrant at least a $1000 scholarship. Any UNECOM faculty/staff out there reading this? *Hint*Hint* 😀

Hey Guys,

Steve and Soccer, I was thinking at the end of april. There is a conference in Boston which I just submited an abstract to. Its a small one run by MGH, so if that works out then I will be there from the 23-26 and go up to Maine right after. Maybe one night or so depending if I find a place to crash. I would like to go and talk to a few people, and if I have visa by then... check out places. But mostly to have a beer.

Will keep you informed as the time gets closer, also the weather will get better.

They've actually posted something about our upcoming orientation on the school website...

I finally called and got my pipeline account set up. Not much on the orientation page yet - but I see we don't need to be on campus until August 7 unless we want to do some of the pre-orientation stuff.

Requested to be added to the 2010 group, too. I'll try to remember to check it fairly often.

Hey all, how is everyone doing? I still havent heard anything from UNECOM regarding whether I am in or not. Tomorrow will be 8 weeks since I interviewed. So other than that, not too much is going on. Work is great. I bought a car last Friday that will hopefully last me through med school. I am down for a meet up whenever anyone is in New England. I am from central NH and its about 1 hr 45 min to UNE for me. So take care everyone. And hopefully the next time I post, I will oficially be a member of the class of 2010.
-Rob

I'm going to be at UNECOM this Friday if anyone is going to be around. I'm driving up from CT to find an apt for the fall.

Unfortunately, I think seriously looking for a house will have to wait until June for us. No way for the husband to take time off before then, and also we'll need to time the selling of our current house and buying of the new house so we'll need to be doing both at about the same time for cash flow purposes. But I'm sure having fun looking at realtor.com!

Because of work, I driving up the weekend of April 1st to look for apartments. But just from what I'm reading on SDN, many people suggest to live alone but live closer to classmates (this way you can stay up late and study, walk around in your underwear, listening to music at 3:00am, and also have your gf or bf over at anytime) yet..you can study with your neighbor and go to classes together. Best of both worlds. So where is everyone getting their apartments? For me is probably going to be either around Biddeford Pool, Fortune Rocks, or in-Town Biddeford. Trying to cut down the distance since I have SUV that drinks gasoline by gallons.

I guess list where you are looking and where have you gotten the apartments. So maybe we can build a med student community hehe, and do dinner exchange party (i.e. 1 person makes food for everybody for a day, this way and rotate around, this way each person probably cooks 1 day out of the week) hehe

Well, I won't be living that close unfortunately, unless I find a screamin' deal that hasn't popped up yet. Most homes in those areas are just too darn expensive for our budget (they don't pay cops anything up there!). So far Waterboro and Lyman have some affordable housing that I've seen. And if anyone else ends up out where I end up at, we can certainly carpool. I just have to make sure wherever we buy a house that I can get a DSL hookup. 🙂

Hey Guys,
I went on pipeline and there seems to be two new people.

I guess shyrem you are one of them... hmmm can't wait to see all 110-120 people in the class. I have not been in a class with the same people for a while now, so this will be a big change. I am looking forward to getting sick of each other. hehehehe

Alright.. that is all the rambling from me this morning.
