Hey,
So in response to your message, I would just like to clarify a few things:
1) The Clinical Based Learning Class is a new class. It is based off the integrated case class that was started last year. The purpose of the class is to give students a better view of the big picture and integrate the basic science classes in a way that better gives the medical perspective. This is how second year is run. Since it is a new course, there are some growing pains. But, the student government is working to help develop the curriculum. We are looking for suggestions from the class to develop well thought out objectives to present to the administration.
2) The Biochemistry department has been running their class as a case based learning style for many years at UNECOM. Because it is dramatically different from a traditional lecture based curriculum, it takes time for students to adjust to the expectations and learning style. However, this is an advantage of learning biochemistry in this case based style. The relevance of biochemistry in the disease process can be difficult to grasp. These cases give us the opportunity to see the signs and symptoms that biochemistry can cause. Every year, there are students who work the faculty to improve the course.
3) The Embryology professor did not leave because of the stated circumstances. He gave his resignation prior to the start of this year. He was offered a position teaching comparative anatomy in the college of arts and science. Given that his doctoral research was on sharks, this is actually the field that he preferred to teach. He was a great professor and he will be missed by all students. But, we are excited for him to teach in a field that he is excited about.
4)The Student Government Association has talked to the anatomy department and is working to ensure that questions are not left off an exam again.
I hope this clears some things up.
