So i received an email saying that UNECOM requires 16 credits of chemistry (4 being Biochem)? I took 8 credits of gen chem and then 8 credits of Orgo. Do you think they would be ok with me taking biochem during the spring 2012 semester?

Also, what are the typical stats that will get someone an interview here?

Hey all-

I know a lot of people have been curious about UNECOM's timelines etc. Here was my experience with them this fall.

AACOMAS complete: 7/8
Secondary Received: 7/19
Supplemental Received by UNE: 9/6
Offer of interview: 9/13
Interview: 10/11
Offer of Admission: 10/27

I had a similar question and admissions (Lisa - very nice and helpful). She said as long as you have all the requirements prior to matriculation you're ok (but yes you do need biochem).

Horrible admission's representatives here. The director of admissions who sends out emails neglected to send me a second confirmation email with the new arrival time after I rescheduled my interview here. As a result, I showed up 4 hours prior to my correct arrival time and unnecessarily spent a night in a hotel near the school.

After sitting in the library for 4 hours, I returned for the day's "events." This was the poorest admissions presentation I have ever encountered. At noon, we were run through 15 minutes of slides, went around the room telling the alumni affairs person who we knew that went there (stupid, irrelevant exercise so that the woman can show-off who she knows from the school), and listened to a few students babble about clubs for 10 minutes. After this 45-50 speel, we returned to a set of tables in a lobby outside of a cafe.

There were 9 interviewees split into 2 teams. Even after the director of admissions admitted to telling me the wrong arrival time, she made me interviewee 5 of 5 meaning I interviewed at 4:15pm. So, after 8.5 hours on campus, I stepped into my interview. And after the little greeting session, you just sit there waiting to interview. Some interview 15-20 minutes later. Some wait for 1, 2, 3, or in my case, 4 hours. You literally just sit there twiddling your thumbs. There was supposed to be 2nd-year guides, but there weren't any. Only first-years who had only been there a few weeks. The "tours" consisted of a 10 minute walk around a couple buildings - incomplete would be an understatement. Biggest waste of my application cycle. UNECOM is on my ****-list for life.👎

Oh wow. I am really sorry to hear that! But thanks for sharing your experience. It'll be interesting to see how it goes compared to my own visit:/

how are OOS students doing? I've been complete for a LONG time, and still haven't heard a word from them yet.

I'm in the same boat, seraphkz...OOS, complete since July 20th.

Question for current students--

I have a question about the Rhode Island/Mass rotation spots. How competitive are these? Also, since Worcester only offers IM/PSY, would the remainder of the year take place at Warwick/Providence?

Rhode Island Rhode Island Clinical Campus
Kent Hospital Warwick FP, IM, OB/GYN, PEDS, SURG
Roger Williams Medical Center Providence IM, PSY, SURG
St. Vincent Hospital Worcester, MA IM, PSY

Thanks,

Fay

Complete since early july!

omg i know right? Someone earlier on this link was saying they were super OOS friendly. Like 85% of their student from OOS? I also heard, however, that they are interviewing more heavily the in-state students... probably just speculation but who knows. I am playing the waiting game too🙁

You can go on what you "hear" or you can go on current and former students who actually attended and can tell you the class makeup.

Most people interview at their state schools, and/or every school within their state.

Shyrem is right.

An applicant who is a Maine resident essentially auto-interviews as long as they meet the schools cutoffs for MCAT/GPA (if they even have one). Students who are from states other than Maine don't have that benefit, but their application is not hurt by being an OOS applicant.

The competitiveness of the 3rd year core rotations sites remains to be seen. The process by which students are assigned to their clinical campuses is being revised in respect to how it was handled last year. The answer to your question will be more clear in January after the lottery (or whatever we're calling it) is completed. With that said, the Rhode Island site will be a top choice for a lot of students.

To be honest, I'd probably just focus on getting into med school, surviving your first two years and preparing for boards before you worry about where you'll be rotating in August 2014.

For the secondary application question that asks to list which schools you've applied to, did you guys list the schools which you sent primary applications to or only the ones you sent secondary applications/were complete?

There were a few schools I applied to where I chose not to complete the secondary for a several reasons.

Thanks.

What part of the word "apply" do you find ambiguous? Yes, that means primary! Even if you've withdrawn your application after applying or were rejected, you still applied and must include it!

Also, let me tell you that they can care less what/how many schools you put on that list (speaking from experience). If you have a lot, they will ask you about it during the interview and as long as you don't tell them that UNE-COM is your last choice, it has minimal affect on your application!

Good Luck!:luck:

For the past 10+ years, roughly:

60% of the class come from New England States (CT, ME, MA, NH, RI & VT).

20% come from the remaining Northeastern States (NJ, NY & PA).

20% come from other states (incl. 1-2 Canadians).

For those of you OOS's who have gotten accepted and are not immediate New England OOS's, what stats are they typically accepting? Or what is the average of those who are applying now? I spoke with admissions today and they said they were not even half full yet. Gives me hope. I am 3.8 cGPA, 3.61 sGPA and a 26M. Is this competitive for this school?😕

Kind of disappointed I haven't heard back (9/8 complete). One of 3 schools applied to.

haha that's the quickest turn around time for an interview invite I've ever seen

Holy Crap 😱 !!! That is the fastest I have heard of! Did you pre-send in your LOR's early? or did they grant you an interview before they received them? I just sent my secondary in today at 3pm today. I don't expect a turn around time like that, but hope for quick turn around. Does anyone know what the job market for a spouse is like around the area? Is Portland a fairly large metro area?

My LORs got there before my secondary. I got caught up on my thesis and other work and was not able to get in my secondary immediately after I received it. Once I sent the primary, it was a quick email to all my recommenders to get my letter in. The interview was not granted until my file was complete. I was shocked too at the turnaround.

I can't speak about the job market too much, but the school is 20 minutes from Portland (Maine's largest city), and I heard today that some students prefer to live there because it is a larger city with more things to do and more opportunities. Biddeford/Saco is a decent size area from what I saw today. Cost of living is pretty affordable as well it seems.

Good luck!

Did you have a letter from a DO or MD?

When did they tell you that you would find out if you were accepted?

about 3 weeks. My understanding is the adcom meets 1 or 2 times/month. I may have submitted my secondary the morning of the day they met and that is how I got such a quick response, who knows though

I also interviewed recently. The interviewers were kind and the actual interview was conversational. Even though I stumbled a bit ("describe yourself"), I also know my personality and character came through. I think this is the best I can hope for. The waiting for a decision is the hard part..

Is their a link ti check the status or no?

No link. Applicants have to wait for the notification from the admissions committee. With the Thanksgiving holiday next week, it looks like decisions for those of us who interviewed around mid-November will go out late November/early December.

just got a rejection letter. First form of communication from this school and was complete in July. Already accepted at my number 1 school though.

3.76/ 25/professional degree with 10 years clinical experience😕

How long does it take usually between completion and interview invite???? Ive been complete since 11/3

It varies. I received an interview invite the same day I submitted by secondary.

It took 2-3 weeks for me to receive an interview invite. Anyone else waiting for an admissions decision?

I interviewed 11/16 and was told about 3 weeks to hear a decision, anytime around December 7th I think is what they told us.

Accepted! I will definitely be attending.

Can any first years chime in and tell me about their schedule? When I was interviewing, I was told the curriculum underwent a major change last year, reducing the amount of time spent in class, among other things. How many hours (roughly) do you have to spend on campus? Is there a sample schedule anywhere for the new changes?

Accepted yesterday, interviewed 11/16

Congrats on your acceptances.

If you or anyone else has any GENERAL questions about UNECOM, feel free to PM me!

Disclaimer:
1) I'm a current OMS-IV and can NOT tell you anything about the specifics of first year as it has changed!
2) Also, I have really enjoyed my time at UNECOM and you will get factual but very biased opinion/reply!

Congrats!! What part of Texas are you from? I am from Houston, TX. IM me if you have any questions.

I have been waiting to hear back from this school before I officially joined the discussion, but after hearing that people got interviews invites on the same day they were complete? Perhaps I should not expect to hear anything from UNECOM after all. Sad face.

I've also been waiting for a while 🙁 Does anyone know what the typical waiting time is? (I know not everyone out there is getting responses the same day they were complete!)

Dr Meows -waiting times vary greatly I imagine. Last year I was complete in late October, recieved the interview invite in January for January, but had to delay the interview to Feb due to previous commitments. Interview went well, but was placed on the dreaded waitlist. Reapplied this year with my secondary being complete on Oct 5th, and recieved communication on Oct 10th for an interview. Caveat - the school was well aware of a tight time schedule on my end (I'm currently serving in Afghanistan, and was in the US for only 15 days). Interviewed on the 18th, accepted on November 1. I'm an OOS, and my stats are GPA: a little below average, MCAT: a little above average, work experience: paramedic with 17 years on the job, research - some assisting with the development of a novel airway management device, and occasionally sit as a panelist for the Army Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center.
Wish that I could tell you that there is a specific recipie for acceptance, but there isn't. This was my fourth year of applying to medical schools. If you're not accepted this year, don't quit. Keep trying, and keep rewriting your app as well as keep participating in activities to add breadth and scope to it.
Good Luck!

Will be a OMS1 next year, but recieved some info from a current OMS1 in reagards to a typical daily routine. I hope that it's part of what you're looking for. Posted with permission.

6:45am – Alarm goes off… not happy. I hit the snooze. Then I hit it again a second time. I finally stumble out of bed at around 7. I take a quick 10-minute shower, and eat a quick breakfast. Funny thing is I never used to be a breakfast guy, but that formaldehyde in the anatomy lab does wonders for your appetite.
7:30 – Leave for school
7:45 – Arrive at school. I like getting to class a few minutes early so I can mess around, talk to friends, and get my notes together for class. It relaxes me.
8:00 – On most days, class starts at 8. Others it starts at 9 or even 10.
12pm – Lunch. I go to dining hall with my friends most days unless I have a club meeting. The food is decent, and for $4.75 (at today's price), the all-you-can-eat selection is unbeatable. After we're finished eating, we usually toss a football around. I have never done work during lunch. Class is pretty intense, so an hour taken to decompress is very much welcomed.
1:00 – Depending on the day, I may or may not have class. If I'm free, I'll usually go to the library or find a quiet spot on campus to study.
3:00 – On Mondays, I get out of class around this time.
5:00 – On Wednesdays and Fridays, I get out of class around this time. It doesn't matter when I get out; I always take 2 hours for myself… ALWAYS. I'll use that time to go eat, work out, or hang out with friends. I need it and encourage you to think about doing something similar when you come to med school.
7:00 – Flag Football or Study
8:00 – Flag Football or Study
9:00 – Study
10:00 – Study
11:00 – Bed
A few things: This "routine" is dependent on where I am in the block and how close I am to exam week; the closer I am, the more I study; the farther away I am, the more flag football and video games. I still use facebook, keep up with the news, and maintain most of my personal relationships. I take Friday night off just about every week. I do my best to maintain the life I had before medical school began.

Thanks Fay8, congrats to you too! I was very impressed with the school, so I am very excited to attend (still have to hear from other schools as well though). I will be @ Osteoblast - looking forward to meeting you and our classmates!
