So I called UNECOM today and they said that it could be another two weeks until their supplemental app is sent out! WTF? Is anybody a little upset about this, especially those who had AACOMAS submitted early? We no longer have the early advantage anymore, which is disappointing, as their apps will be reveiwed in the order they are complete (primary + secondary). So until I hear more uplifting news, I say UNECOM, more like POO-NECOM.

i have a friend who applied to unecom last year and was on the "accepted if space available" list. they told her if she submitted another accomas by july (and along with a letter of intent) that most likely she would be granted admission for fall 2007 without a secondary or interview. i know that she is still waiting for the official word and that unecom has not even had the meeting yet to accept the waitlisters (she is supposed to know by the end of august)..so that is what i would assume is holding up unecom with handing out secondaries? there are probably a whole group of people who applied last year and are waiting to hear from unecom now

Doesn't really upset me.
Gives me more time to write a great essay response.

yeaaa, well i am sort of annoyed by unecom's lack of response. I think unecom traditionally is not as agreesive as other schools such as pcom, umdnj, nycom etc so i guesss patients is virtue.lol

I failed to mention why it's taking so long for them. The admissions lady said they purchased a new software package for the online secondary and that they have yet to have it working properly. This is the same response I got two weeks ago when I called. One would think they would have the new software tested prior to the new app cycle and have the vendor check things out if there was a major problem, right? Oh well, what can you do. UNECOM is in my top 3, so I guess I'll just have to wait and bear it.

This is more of a vent thread than an anger thread. But, still, the situation is kind of irritating.

now I can catch up! 😎

That's exactly the response I got last week, but they said this was this week it would be fixed. 2 more weeks? What could possibly be taking so long? Ridiculous. Early people are going to have acceptances before they're starting interviews.

I will say they are trying VERY hard to upgrade *all* their software this year (I'm a new MSI), so it's a major learning curve for them. They just updated their internal mail servers, webct, bulletin boards, etc too. Patience. The school is really fabulous - the professors are amazingly supportive and accessible. I am VERY VERY VERY happy I chose UNECOM.

Don't let this one really rather small thing disuade you from UNE. Relax. It is really very very early in the season yet.

I'm not disuaded. UNECOM is in my top 3. The wait has been frustrating, especially considering people have multiple interview invites already and still no secondary from UNECOM. The idea of losing the early advantage is what's most frustrating and irritating, though. A lot of us busted our butts to be in the first couple of AACOMAS mailings in order to have such an advantage, especially for a highly favored school.

Just have to wait some more. No hard feelings, UNECOM 😉

ShyRem: Any further inside info would be much appreciated

With all available info: UNECOM, DMU, KCOM

I really only have a top two KCOM and UNECOM, I am also impatiently waiting, come one UNE! We want some LOVE!!!! 😀 😛 😍

UNECOM is definitely my first choice with PCOM as a close second, but it's early yet and my insight into the schools is limited, so far.
Thanks for the insight, ShyRem! Glad to know you feel great about your decision to go there, too.

Definitely my first choice too! Although I don't live in New England...

Dont worry, youre all in the same boat and I'm sure you will all do fine!

What would you like to know? Granted, I've only been here since August 1, but I just took my first gross exam. I think I've just about figured out the "drinking from a fire hose" style of learning.

The fellows are really really REALLY awesome. Lots and lots of second years to help you out in OMM lab (one second year to two tables in these early days so far), noteservice available for subscription (it is student run and you get the mp3 audio files online), powerpoints available online, computer hookups at every seat, comfy lecture chairs, beautiful beautiful campus and lovely view from the OMM lab, 24 hour access to any facilities you need. Need to check on something on your cadaver at 3am that's keeping you awake? Head on down to campus. The one downside so far? The locker rooms for changing into your scrubs for gross lab are pretty small and usually cold. Old exams are available for review from SOMA as a fundraiser (but they have copies of just about every exam for the last 6 years). And the MSIIs made this fabulous data CD with notes and stuff for all our classes. They were REALLY awesome. And my MSII buddy left homemade brownies in my box on the day of my first gross anatomy exam. SOSA does a review before every gross test (VERY helpful). Wireless access all over campus (haven't found a dead spot yet).

So, what can I tell you based on my limited knowledge so far? Those are some random ramblings that just pop to my brain so far.....
🙂

OH - and keep an open mind about your "preferred" list. Originally DMU was the top of my list and UNE was down towards the middle-bottom... the interviews both places TOTALLY changed that. UNE went to the absolute top of my list after my interview, mainly based on the people there (the interviewers, the admissions staff, students, etc).

Excellent info, ShyRem. If you were posting in response to my request, I was eluding more towards info on what's going on with the secondary. Regardless, great info. I can't wait to visit 🙂

Yah - thanks ShyRem!

It sort of sounds great and awful (the schedule - in another thread you posted on), all at the same time!!

I'll see what I can find out about the secondary. They do know they're running a little behind, tho - but fear not. Last year I was in one of the early bunches of interviews (end of September)- and was accepted 4 days after my interview. And the call has gone out for students willing to help with interviewees. So it's all moving forward. Relax. It's ok. 🙂 UNECOM is definitely NOT the place for the gunners - UNE is much more laid back than that. Wait for the secondary, be yourself, and you'll be fine. And relax.

Did I mention relax? Go have some chocolate. Go out to dinner. Go see a movie (I rent them 'cuz it's too expensive to go to the theatre). Walk along a waterfront (river, creek, stream, lake, ocean, whatever). Breathe deeply. Feel happy you're alive and not in gross anatomy lab pickin' fat & fascia this weekend like us poor MSIs. That'll come soon enough. 😉

ShyRem~ If you can read my other post toward the top of this thread, i have a friend of mine waiting to hear from unecom. do you know of anyone who applied the year before, was put on the 'accepted with space available' waitlist, and then accepted for the year after? i just want my friend to get in now since its almost the end of august, and they told her she would know by then. she applied for fall 2006 entry, was put on that waitlist..and was told if she filled out aacomas this year by july she would most likely be accepted for fall 2007. i was just wondering if you knew anyone personallly that did this. i hope unecom keeps their word! 🙂

don't know any personally -- but I haven't asked around either. I'll poke around and see what i hear. I know there are going to be a bunch of us MSIs in gross tomorrow trying to catch up with our dissections and body surfing.

Take it from shyrem,

I'm also a MSI at UNECOM, it's a great school it is a school that will get you everything you need to succeed. the cost of living is definitely better than NYCOM or PCOM. I like the fact that.. gas price are very low, my meal cost are low, everyone at school and around the town are super nice. and right next to the beach ! you can be in school and walk to the beach and study , then come back in no time.

Any more about the school would be great to hear from the MS1's out there taking a study break!

I'm not finding out a lot about UNECOM from the website, so much. (Makes it hard to write about why I want to go there, besides something like, "It's closest to home!" - LOL (Which I won't do!)) Not to get essay stuff so much, but I really want to know for myself.

Anyway - just curious about what you might want to say that people can't necessarily find out from general sources.

Has anyone called them recently to find out the updated timeline for secondaries?

Chances are, if you do, you'll get a vague answer along the lines of "within the next two weeks."

hey all, this is from last year...

Good luck, UNE was awesome but my interview wasn't. I'm a world away right now but I'm hoping to live up in maine sometime again.

I called today. Now, they won't even give you a time frame. They just said it's still not working, and just keep checking your email. Good grief.

i just got off the phone with them as well..i think her name was "janice"?

computer glitch--they will email the secondaries to qualified applicants once they get the system up and running .. haha 😴

new computer hub is supposed to be online by next week.

As for what you want to know - what do you want to know? Ask, and I shall endeavor to answer to the best of my abilities.

You can always fall onto a heart-felt answer for "why here" -- I love Maine, UNE students are about the happiest I've heard of, UNE students seem to love their school and work together as a team, UNE is constantly working to improve their curriculum, their education, their clinical experiences, etc. And last, but not least (and yes, I actually said this), I WANT TO BE A DOCTOR. whatever you do, please please please do NOT try to snow your interviewers. Be yourself. Be honest. If you don't have an answer, say "gee, I never really thought of it in that particular way". I honestly stated for the "why DO" question that although I've been in the medical field for 15 years, I never cared if a physician was a DO, an MD, or had a XYRT after their name. The intitials didn't make a good physician - the person and their training did, and I was looking for a place that was a good fit for me. I was honest about applying to MD and DO schools. I looked for schools that were good places for my family to be, good for me, and hopefully where I would be good for the school.

UNE looks for a solid student body - honesty, integrity, drive, cooperation, friendliness, hardworking, intelligent, curious. They look for students who strive to be more than the sum of their parts and who aren't afraid to admit their failings nor arrogant about their successes; however you must be willing to work on your failings and celebrate your successes at the same time.

Lots of double-speak, but heartfelt from me nonetheless. I hope I make sense - we had embryo review and I'm fighting off a cold/flu like thing. 🙁

Just got the UNECOM secondary invite no on-line submission yet but they posted the essay questions

woohoo I just got it! Finally!

I just got it as well--however, they also sent me all the essay questions in the email so i can "reflect" on them and start writing my statements. They said they congratulations for meeting their requirements for the secondary lol

anyways....at least i know what ill be "reflecting" on this weekend. 🙂

Yes, we finally got something from UNECOM. What a relief to know that we made the intial cut. Now if only we could submit everything and get on with the interviews.....

I wonder if they sent them all out at the same time for people who had submitted AACOMAS? I didn't get a secondary today...but would hope that I made the cutoff with a 24 MCAT and 3.5 GPA...I submitted AACOMAS in late July.

That's great that you answered with that, ShyRem. I'm good at the heartfelt honest answers, but I always thought they wanted more of the, y'know, intellectual reasons why you want to go there... (whatever THAT is - curriculum style, facilities or - heck, I have no idea how people answer that question!) But the things you're talking about I can do, no problem. Anyway, thanks for all the input! 😍

still no word from UNECOM...anyone else in the same boat?

They are still working on that computer glitch.

They are still working on that computer glitch.

That's what I figure. I'd rather get it a week from now, without glitches, than get it last week and have to wrestle with it.

I e-mailed them yesterday and they got back to me today (timely!), saying they would be sending me the supplemental at the end of this week or the beginning of next week. Yes, they mentioned the glitches.

Their online system still doesn't work. I have received the secondary application essay questions in the email. I dont mind it, it provides us with an extra time to work on the essays😉

Hi,

My wife was also on the ASA for UNECOM for 2006 (she was not pulled from the list). She was told by Lisa (from UNECOM) a few weeks ago that she would, most likely, not even have to complete the secondary app. since she already sent her intent to reapply for 2007. Other than that, I can't say with certainty that everyone on the ASA automatically gets accepted for the following year if they aren't pulled from the list for the current year.
