University of Houston Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I also printed the whole thing out. Was the letter of intent the form that said congratulations on being accepted and had all the directions? Little confusing because it never said letter of intent on it anywhere.

Thanks everyone! Guess I'll be mailing the entire thing as well to be safe. I'm pretty sure the letter of intent is the 3 page document that says "Congratulations" on it.

Hi guys! I just got done with my interview a few hours ago. It was awesome! Everyone there was extremely nice and helpful. I wasn't even nervous and I thought I would be. I had a one on one with Dr. Wallace, he's really nice and laid back. I feel that UH really tries to get to know you versus the other schools I've interviewed. The group discussion was interesting and fun. The only downside was that the building is really old and it blends into the background and it could use a manicure on the outside. Also the pharmacy student in charge of organizing the whole ordeal with interviews says there will be at least 3 or 4 more interviews. I got my interview invite only a week before the interview date. So be patient, stay positive and goodluck to everyone!!!

I had my interview with Dr. Wallace as well, he is very approachable and open. I felt he spoke as much as I did during the interview which is a refreshing change, it made it feel more like a conversation. UH is a little bit dated looking, but I also interviewed at Regis (in Denver) and they are using an old high school as the pharmacy school, so it could be much worse. Plus their tuition is like 37,000/year. Houston was a much better choice for me. Good luck on your application!!

I think in-state tuition is always going to be a plus. Goodluck to you too!

I interviewed on Feb 25 but I haven't heard back from UH. I know some of you that interviewed on the same day received an email on Monday. Is that a bad sign? 🙁 or does the school send out emails on different days?

Yeah all the professors at UHCOP are pretty amazing. Dr. Wallace is one who really stands out. He truly truly cares about us and has done a lot for us these past 3 years. We're very fortunate to have him on as faculty at the College.

In terms of the building, our awesome Dean is actually working on having a new one built for our the College. When the building will be up and running no one knows, especially after the huge budget cuts that are going on all over Texas due to the huge deficit. But it's in the works 🙂

Regis is a private school if I'm not mistaken so tuition (both in and out of state) will be high regardless. I interviewed at the University of Colorado in Denver 3 years ago. As much as I liked that program, my heart was always at UH 😀

Don't loose hope until they send you rejection letter. You might be tabled and accepted later. I was interviewed 1/28 and received my rejection letter couple of days ago. Very disappointed since UH was my first choice. 🙁

has anyone from march 4 interview heard back? :scared:

yoomi1231: optimus33 is right, there are ppl who are tabled and are later accepted. don't lose hope!

optimus33: sorry to hear about that. did you apply to other schools?

Since I did not receive anything, that means I am waitlisted? I thought the school will send out the email in case somebody gets waitlisted and not just leave them hanging. That was my understanding. I am getting so scared ehhh 🙁

Unfortunately, I only applied to UH since I did my undergrad there and really wanted to be a part of it. Next year, I will finish my degree and apply to all schools in Texas.

Apply out of state as well if you can...TX is pretty competitive

So, I just got accepted to UH, which I'm very happy about! However, I've already been accepted to Tech. Can you guys try to objectively help me decide which school to attend based on rotation availablity, future residency potential, and future job potential. I do not care about location. Note: I was accepted at Amarillo first two years and Dallas second two years for Tech. Idk what to do guys!!! What do yall think?? (I know that Tech is "ranked" higher than UH, but I also know that UH has a slightly higher NAPLEX passing rate than tech.)

Thanks!!!

It's hard to "rank" a school, lol. How do you really rank them anyways? Based on GPA? Lol, ranking doesn't matter all too much to me, lol. One big thing about UH is the fact that your last two years and future residency potentials will be in TMC...which is like uber awesome, haha. It's crowded and everything but you're part of one of the largest medical centers - amazing much? 🙂 Good thing about Tech is location is quieter, haha. I like that better...it's more quiet and nice, XD. And I don't know about UH or any other CoP...but Tech admins knows you by name eventually, which is really nice 🙂

Anyways, I'm still undecided as well and just got into UH too 🙂 Yayzors ^_^

Congratulations to everyone who got in ^_^

I received the acceptance email as well and am beyond happy. 😀 Good luck to everyone!

PS: Thanks to all the pharmacy students who volunteered their time to help out that day. You guys were awesome!

I interviewed March 4th and got my acceptance email late last night, for anyone who was wondering. I definitely was a little confused because it says "conditionally accepted" but I'm assuming that it's "conditional" due to the massive amount of paperwork they sent along with the email. Is this assumption true?

Overall I'm pretty happy because I am pretty sure I am going to end up attending UH, but I'm still waiting on UT.

------------

Xavier University - Accepted - Declined
Texas Tech University - Accepted - Undecided
University of Houston - Accepted - Undecided
University of Texas - Waiting

Good luck to everyone else!

Hello all, I was accepted. I interviewed on March 4th.
I'll be declining the offer, though. I was accepted to UT, and it's a better fit for me.

Congrats to all who got in!

Don't look at the rank at all. I think students tend to focus on that too much, at least this was the case when I was applying. This is how the ranking was brought about. As you can see, this is hardly an objective and scientific assessment of the programs:

"All the health rankings are based solely on the results of peer assessment surveys sent to deans, other administrators, and/or faculty at accredited degree programs or schools in each discipline. All schools surveyed in a discipline were sent the same number of surveys. Respondents rated the academic quality of programs on a 5-point scale: outstanding (5), strong (4), good (3), adequate (2), or marginal (1). They were instructed to select "don't know" if they did not have enough knowledge to rate a program. Only fully accredited programs in good standing during the survey period are ranked. Those schools with the highest average scores appear." (Source: http://www.usnews.com/education/bes...s/2011/03/14/health-rankings-methodology-2012)

In regards to residency potential, residency programs could care less where you did your graduate studies for the most part. It's more about how involved you are, whether or not you've taken leadership positions in your student organizations, whether you've shown that you can handle the high demands and pressures of a residency program, whether you've done well in school while juggling other responsibilities, etc. One thing you should know about residency programs is that they are EXTREMELY competitive. A few of the programs I talked to at Midyear had hundreds of student apply for like 3 or 4 spots. So the key is not which program you attend but how you make the most of your time there. Not much I can really say about rotations because I'm not familiar with Tech's fourth year rotation process. And job potential, it's hard to say. It really depends on what you hope to do in the future. With regards to hospitals, most across the nation are cutting down on hiring to save money and asking more of their physicians, PAs, nurses, pharmacists, etc. With regards to retail, I'm not certain. Houston has a lot of pharmacists and a lot of retail pharmacies. In this economy, I'm don't think they're hiring as much these days. Again it's tough to say. When I was applying, there was so much talk about the shortage in pharmacy. This is definitely not the case now except in rural communities which desperately need pharmacies and pharmacists.

While all this is good to think about, you have to keep in mind that which ever program you attend, you're going to be there for the next 4 years. Really look at your interview experience and gauge how you felt about each program. Which ever program you decide to attend, make the most out of it. Pharmacy is competitive these days so you have to really try to make yourself stand out.

Congrats on your acceptance! It's a conditional acceptance pending satisfactory completion of the remaining prerequisite courses. They should be listed in the acceptance letter attached to the e-mail.

I got into both UT and UH and accepted for UH despite being a Longhorn alumnus.

Why is it no use? Wouldn't you know whether you got an interview or not if you called?

I called Morgan Ely today and he said for those of you who are still waiting (as for myself due to January PCAT scores) for an interview, hang in tight and hope for the best. Unless you have received a denial letter, then your application is still being reviewed.

Thank you greatly Achilleus, an excellent answer; I appreciate it.

I'm sorry....Morgan Ely is a he? I thought I met her, not him. I'm confused 😕

My pleasure. I was actually in the same situation you're in. I got accepted into UH and Tech (Amarillo-Dallas), along with other schools, and was a bit in between. I'll send you a PM on how I ultimately came to my choice.

OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGg REALLY?! I am so embarrassed right now. He just sent me an email regarding my acceptance and I....ugh!

When I went to interview, I thought I met him (it was a girl with a nametag which I thought said Morgan Ely)....I feel so embarassed. I should just go hide in a cave! He's probably angry with me...:scared:

Lol. Don't worry about it. He's actually a really cool and this is likely not the first time it has happened. Just keep in mind that he is male for the next time.

OMG, this post has given me hope. Needed this.

Crazy day in the world of pharmacy school right now! Today was Match Day for the P4s!

I submitted my application and all the materials a week before the deadline. I also took the January PCAT and I was getting worried that I wouldn't get an invitation for an interview. I just received my interview invitation today for April 8. So if you submitted the application late, don't worry so much and follow Weasel11's advice!

Lol! I'm glad you finally got your invite! I received mine today as well! Maybe we will see each other! What time is yours at?

And yes, if you haven't received an invite yet.... Still wait and stay calm and hopeful. Interviews go until May so there may still be a chance 🙂 If you are really concerned you can always call and ask. They are super friendly!

And, also, congrats on that invite! Good luck!:luck:

Hello y'all,

Congrats to all who got invited and to all who got accepted! I'm still waiting for my letter of acceptance/denial and I'm really nervous on whether I got in or not. My interview was on March 4th too... 🙁

Can the letter come at any time? Are there specific days where letters may be emailed? It seems like a lot of people are getting them on a Monday so I wanted to ask...
