any news on waitlist movement?
Nothing here on my end :/
any news on waitlist movement?
We are supposed to be getting an update today. If my spot doesn't move I think I'm going to give them a call to see if the class is full or not.
how about IS spots for those waiting in state?I'm pretty positive there are spots, guys. Multiple people on this thread turned down their OOS spots.....

that is too bad because what is the point of having a wait list if they over-accept? You'd think they would just accept and put everyone else on the waitlist. Very frustrating. makes waitlist numbers "lower" than what they are if they do over-accept.I know, I'm just being paranoid. I just remember that they over accept so that might make up for the few drops here on the forum

Still - I think it stinks because the guy sitting at #1 on the wait list thinks the first person that declines a spot will get his/her spot - as he ought to believe that given his #1 spot. Instead, you'd have to factor in the number a class is "over accepted." So - if the class, as you write, over accepts to 70 when they only have 40 spots. That means the person sitting at number 2 on the waitlist is really sitting at #32 and I don't think that is fair. Not cool. One thing to consider though. While some schools don't over-accept, those that do makes things run more efficiently in a way, and allows the waitlist that they do call to have enough time. For example, let's say a school has 40 spots for OOS but over-accepts to 70. They let 30 extra people know, but then it usually works out to where there are less than 40 spots and therefore they still call off their OOS waitlist (let's say they call off 30 people to fill the remaining spots). Even when they do that, some classes doesn't completely fill until a week or so before classes. If they didn't over-accept, that would be 60 or more people that would be put on the waitlist, which they would eventually call off, but since they usually only go a few people at a time... it could potentially take even longer, and we all know the waitlist moves slow enough as it is. At least, that's how it was told to me.
Just keep your head up and sit tight, hopefully you will get good news soon!![]()
That's very true, but those that do get called off the waitlist if the school doesn't over - accept could be called weeks or even months later than they would have, and in a way that's not fair either. Also, those that got accepted in the over - accept situation could have been waitlisted as well in a non over accept situation, which wouldn't be fair to them either to wait. No matter what, someone gets the short stick. It really isn't fair, but it is what it is.Still - I think it stinks because the guy sitting at #1 on the wait list thinks the first person that declines a spot will get his/her spot - as he ought to believe that given his #1 spot. I know this process stinks. It really does. Just try to hold out for a bit longer, the news will come eventually.
there is one thing that would make me happy and that is getting off the waitlist! Thanks though for all your insight. Very understanding of you to be so supportive during such a high stress time for those of us on the waitlist. Yes happy to be on the list but after a rollercoaster of trying to get in, other waitlisters can appreciate how tough it is. you, already in vet school, have probably long forgotten the stress. I will rely on my fellow waitlisters to be supportors of the present long wait and the anxiety.I don't think the process stinks at all.
I'm actually pretty impressed at how almost all the schools handle their admissions. Think of what a huge challenge they face: they get 10x the number of seats they have in applications. They have to go through every application, scoring them and ranking them. Many of them, like the U, then go on to interview at least twice as many people as they have seats for. They have to score all those. Then they have to go through the iterative process of notifying, wait for acceptance/declining, notifying, waiting, etc., until they finally have a class roster. To get through the application->interview->first round of acceptances as quickly as they do? I think it's an amazingly well-oiled machine. (This isn't me defending UMN: I think nearly all schools do an exceptional job with it.)
I think mcmom is just going to be upset no matter what. She's upset at being on the waitlist (which to me seems kinda callous considering how many people are outright rejected). She's upset at the idea of a mechanism that might speed things up, even though it actually would alleviate her first concern..... You can't please some people.
As an aside, I don't know that UMN *does* over-accept. They certainly may. I know some (many? most?) schools do. But I'm not sure if PaulsPaws actually knows that UMN does, or is just assuming it or heard it somewhere or .....

Is this the thread for UMN '18 applicants? or for the officially accepted class? or a lovely smish smash of the two?
Either way, I need help getting excited about moving from the friends, lover, sunshine, and ocean I have here in California to Minnesota. Don't get me wrong, I am so grateful for this opportunity...but lately I have been focusing on the things I am leaving to go do this school thing, instead of focusing on all the amazing and delightful things awaiting me there. So, tell me something wonderful about Minnesota - the state, the people, the school, the food, the weather (ha). Pretty please?

It's normal to feel that way 😉 Minnesota's a great place. People are so wonderfully friendly here... but not in a creepy way (although I suppose it was a bit off putting at first, as someone who came here from a cynical don't talk to me in the supermarket line kinda place.) Random strangers will just say hi to you walking down the street. Plus, it's really pretty here. And there are parks everywhere (at least by me) with little lakes and lots of ducks and songbirds. All in all it's a very "nice" place to live. And I second the closet of kittens. It's recently been repopulated with litters of 2-3 week old kittens for some great in between class snuggle time. And the great clubs... lots of awesome activities to look forward to, and you can get involved even in the first 1-2 months of school! I'm looking forward to fall already! (Wait, what? 😵)Is this the thread for UMN '18 applicants? or for the officially accepted class? or a lovely smish smash of the two?

Don't mind him, he's stuck in rotations now so you probably won't be subjected to too much negativity from that quarter next year 😉Bah. Humbug. 🙂

1. New friends
2. Sunshine does exist here too (especially in the summer)
3. More shoreline than California (land of 10,000 lakes!)
4. State Fair and deep fried anything you could possibly want and many things you probably wouldn't on a stick
5. Snowy white Christmas (it's really only after the holidays that you wish the snow would go away and ne'er return)
6. We definitely get all 4 seasons, even if that pesky winter has been lasting longer than usual lately
7. People are generally pretty amazing, but I'm from here so not sure how unbiased I am in that regard 😉
8. There's a zoo within a couple miles of school that is free and open everyday year round, if you're into that sort of thing
9. Super bike friendly (I think Minneapolis recently beat out Portland as most bike-friendly in the nation) again if you're into that sort of thing
10. Both large and small animal hospitals right on campus (so there are dogs, cats, horses, cows, and the occasional llama/alpaca nearby at all times)
11. There is a kitten-closet right outside the 1st year lecture room. No lie, the closet mews because it is full of baby kittens.
12. Lots of clubs for hands on learning/trips/activities/etc
Honestly the list goes on, but that's something for now 😀
Let me know if you have any specific questions - almost done with first year at UMN and would be happy to share (less than a week left!)
Look's like I'm going to be one of the student mentors for your GOALE orientation in August. That means you guys have a 1 in 10 chance of being tortured by me for two long days at camp, muhahahaha(vampire was the closest I could find to an evil smily...) Just kidding, of course. It'll be lots of fun! 😉
LAME. too bad you couldnt help out too. 🙂 Although I am excited to meet all the 2016 and 2017ers ......Awwwww. I've done three GOALes in a row now. This will be my first one to miss. Sadness. Ah well. Baton ... passed.

What amount of movement on the IS list if you know? And, if anyone has heard also about the OOS list, please post.I just emailed Karen and the resident waitlist has moved. I don't know about the oos waitlist though. . .

Hehe. I actually considered it, but then I realized two things:
1) I'm on ECC rotation then, so there's no hope I could swing it, and
2) I love our c/o 2014 in general, but it's always slightly annoyed me that they didn't really pass the torch on as far as 'helping out the incoming classes'. Working with the incoming classes is (at least for people like me) rejuvenating. Vet school can kinda beat you down sometimes; it's fun to be around people who are all excited and hyped up and whatnot. But our c/o 2014 just kept staying involved and reducing the chances for other classes. I don't want to be like that. I helped out for three years; it's time for me to get out of the way. 🙂
But I'll see you guys around the hospital if you poke your head in! Come get a job, come shadow, whatever. Say hi! 🙂
You will fit in well with the majority of people in vet school, you are already complaining about stuff.that is too bad because what is the point of having a wait list if they over-accept? And you are #1 on OOS if I recall correctly? And no movement? What a bummer - I am keeping fingers crossed for you...and doesn't it seem strange because so many other schools have had movement both in the IS and in the OOS. Anyone else hear anything from MN - either IS or OOS news?Still haven't received a call, sorry :/

Are you in your class's Facebook page? You'll probably have much better luck on there. So for a variety of reasons (none involving the wait list) it wasn't until the beginning of the week that attending vet school in Minnesota became a reality for me. So now it is serious time to get my **** togheter.
Myself and my dog and my life are all in California and I need to be situated in St Paul in 19 days for orientation. I am having a helluva time finding housing for me and my Rottie Mix (Restricted breed at almost every apartment place), and the idea of driving there without housing locked in doesn't feel so good to me.
Looking for something as close to campus as possible, would love a fenced yard and garage. The only real requirements are animals in the household - only dogs over about 30-40 lbs that won't be intimidated by a 60lb dog wanting to play. He doesn't do well with other types of animals or small dogs or alpha males. He loves alpha females, however attachFull184421
Anyone need a room mate? Or know someone who does? Or know of a place for rent that's not on craigslist or the UMN CVM ads? I can move into a room or start a new lease with you (I have found some amazing 2-3 BR places). Msg me for more info please!
Thank you and crossing my fingers!!!
