I was wondering - is it possible to get around the city without a car? How good is the transportation system in the St. Paul?
Most of us have cars, although not everyone uses them to get to school. There is a pretty extensive bus system, but it can take awhile to get where you're going. I don't really have much to compare it to because of never been a big bus taker, but I think it's pretty good. But it is something you want to pay attention to when picking a place to live.

It's fair. The bus system is pretty wide-ranging, and being a student means you can get a $97 unlimited pass for metro buses.

To get most places you'd probably end up taking a campus connector over to the Minneapolis campus (~10-minute ride) and then taking a Metro bus from there. There are some buses that serve the St. Paul campus, but not as many.

I take the bus pretty regularly from where I live 30 minutes west. I drive a mile to the park 'n ride, catch a bus to Minneapolis campus, and take the connector over to St. Paul. It's not bad.

http://www.metrotransit.org/ has the bus routes. I don't think it has the campus connector on it, but that's a free bus that runs continuously between campuses during the day (not sure how late it runs).

That said, I feel like if bus was your ONLY means of transportation it would get old. It feels to me like you have to do a lot of "grab bus A to downtown, then bus B to where you *really* want to go, then reverse to get home" kind of stuff. It's not like some cities with awesome subway/train systems. We've just really started building train stuff here in the last decade, so it's still getting going and being expanded.

I think even if you lived within walking distance of campus you're going to want a car at some point for things like groceries. You don't really need one, though, for vet-school specific stuff.

I finally made an account! I got accepted last week - I wanted to ask: How can I know whether I have a full or provisional offer? I am 99.99% sure I have everything I need, but I don't want any surprises! I am taking right now some classes that other universities needed, but I am dropping them since I wanna go to Minnesota. Would they have let us know in the first acceptance letter, or after April 15 when they send the follow up emails? I didn't see anything in this first email they sent. I am pretty sure all I need to do now is simply say yes since Minnesota doesn't want anything like Animal Science. Any help is deeply appreciated! 🙂

My first email said "provisional" offer. And then it told me the classes I needed to provide proof of to receive a full offer. I would say if it wasn't in your initial email, then email the school.

This is what a friend of mine told me too, but wanted to ask you guys just to triple check. She said the email would list any prerequisites that I needed and say provisional offer as well. I checked the prerequisites that I have on the UMN's website, and don't see anything I am missing. They email didn't list any classes or say provisional. So glad I asked! Feeling much better 🙂🙂🙂 Thanks a bunch for all your help!!

I would email Academic and Student Affairs (you can use the [email protected] address), specifically list the classes you're taking that you want to drop, and verify with them.

It sounds like overkill, and arguably is, but it's quick 'n easy to check with them, and the penalty for making a mistake would be quite big. So.... best just to check. 🙂

I had a similar situation... I was taking the second semester of Ochem because a couple of other schools required it. But I wanted to drop it and worried that if I did, I could be putting my chances of acceptance as UMN at risk. I emailed Violeta ( she is amazing, and really helpful) at the Office of Academic and Student Affairs and she doubled checked my pre-reqs and verified the rest of my classes. It ended up working out and I don't have to take OChem! 🙂

So if you have any concerns about a class, just do as everyone else has been saying and email the school. They are really nice and get back to you in a very timely manner too.

dont they send you an acceptance email with all the materials?

I didn't get my email right away. I just got the phone call announcing my acceptance. But I like to have everything in writing, so I had to email the school to make sure I had everything that I needed for an official acceptance.

Ahhh sorry I havent been on here in so long, I've been lurking on my cell phone but its so hard to do do posts from my crappy phone!

So @TheComfyCat and @98cats I really want to join your facebook group, but I am waiting to see if I get off the waitlist at a school closer to my bf and my puppy. I REALLY LOVED Minnesota, and I would be more than happy if I ended up going there but I want to know all my options before deciding....

thant being said, I don't know if I should join, and then bow out gracefully if I attend somewhere else. Would that be weird? lol

Also congrats to @Gluffalo on GETTING PENN!!!!!!!!!!!!

...and how could I forget SbLove, DrToby, so much great news on this thread! My apologies 🙂 Congrats to everyone!!
THANK YOU LAB VET ! SO STOKED FOR YOU ABOUT NCSU!

And I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU @sblove17 !!!!

You can join whenever and leave later if you want. I think someone else is in the group right now who isn't sure. But don't feel pressured to join if you don't want to. 🙂

We had a few people join and leave last year, it's not weird.

Does Minnesota have a "day care" program for students' dogs? I thought I remembered hearing that, but maybe it was somewhere else?

There are kennels you can put your dog in during the day if you need/want to bring them with you to school. Students will often do it when they're going to have a really long day can't go home and let their dog out. Also, pets are allowed in the atrium area outside the classrooms so your dog can hang out with you at lunch or if you stay late to study. But it does cost money to use the kennels (I don't remember how much...) and space is available on a first come first served basis every day.

That's a really awesome program. Pets are actually not allowed in our academic building at all.

We have a closet full of kittens right outside our first year classroom too 🙂 Although not right now so much, since it's not kitten season...

😀😀😀D😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀: Thanks DoctorToby! So glad to see everyone finding homes.

I hadn't thought about it but I had noticed things were a bit quieter out in the lobby, without the mews coming from the closet 😀
No barking either, I think the puppies got too big for the closet.

Hey hey hey. Another question. About the rabies vaccine. It said that you can get the shot during the Fall through the school. Is this just available for anyone who pays for it? Or only if you get the student health insurance?

And if I decide to wait until then to get the shot from the school, I don't need it before actually starting classes, right?

My understanding is it's <available> to anyone who wants to pay for it, and it's <covered> for people under the student health plan.

You do not need to start the series before starting school.

I don't know yer situation - if you have health insurance you may want to just call them and say "I require this for vet school, is it covered?" No harm in asking.

I should add... and not that I would encourage anyone to risk it given the cost (back when I did it, the straight-up cost would have been $250/shot * 3 = $750) ... but I required it for wildlife work. I called my insurer and they said "Um... nope. If the wildlife place requires it, they need to provide it."

So I went to my doctor and said "I need rabies vaccination because X." He said "Sure, ok, no problem."

And I have no idea what happened after that, but my insurance company covered the cost without batting an eye.

I've had to titer twice since then for vet school and both times come back high enough. If you talk to people in the field, it's very common for titers to stay high for very long periods of times; even decades.

On the other hand, you have people like me who have the lowest possible titer still considered protective only 4 years after getting the shots... Although I may just have a crappy immune system because I also had a titer for hepatitis B done last summer (couldn't remember if I got the shot and needed it for the school of public health) and had no detectable antibody. Turns out I was vaccinated, and granted it was 15 years ago, but that's not something the average person usually gets boostered... and you'd think there would at least be a little bit of antibody... Point is, everybody's different.

They do rabies vaccine clinics for anyone who needs it during lunch breaks in the fall. It's pretty easy, and if you end up owing money they just bill you. And for anyone who already has their shots, they don't require a titer going into first year, just proof of vaccination.

Truth, everyone is different.

That being said, it's far more common for rabies titers to stay high than to show up low. I think you're most likely an outlier.

They did require a titer for me first year because my vaccination was sufficiently old. (That was my first titer check. My second one was just a month or two ago going into clinics.)

Well, that and in-state tuition pretty much seals the deal. Looks like I'm going to UMN!

Hello Everyone! I am so excited for the fall and congrats to everyone! I absolutely loved UMN when I visited for my interview and I currently plan on attending this fall. However, I am currently # 2 on my in state waiting list (Michigan State). If a spot does open up for me I will have to consider it due to cost. I have visited Michigan State in the past and I feel that Minnesota and the twin cities area is a much better fit for me. Also my brother lives in Minneapolis with his family, and my parents visit them a lot, which means I would be able to see family a lot more than if I went to MSU. It sounds like it is pretty difficult to get residency for the 2nd year, however I would like to get a better idea of how difficult.
For current students do you know about how many out of state students in each class are able to get residency? Or is it pretty much once in a great while that this occurs, is it so rare that not even a few in each class obtain it? I plan on staying in the summers and working, as well as maintaining a part time job throughout the year. I did contact the director of admissions to ask residency questions, or to see if there is someone else I should contact. But I thought I would see what current student's thoughts were too. Thanks everyone!
On an unrelated note, do students receive any sort of discount on veterinary care for their personal pets? I know some schools do this and I was just curious if UMN does.

No idea about the residency questions (all I've heard is that it's a very subjective process) BUT I believe we get 20% off vet services and I know there's a program where you pay a set fee (~$100 for cats and I think ~$200 for dogs) and you can get all preventative stuff and physical exams covered for a year (and then you get the 20% off anything else after that).

I think 20% is right. The downside is that it's still more expensive than most private clinics at that rate. The U is not cheap. The upside is that as you get through the curriculum and meet more and more clinicians, most/many of them are very willing to chat through your case and give you 'offline' guidance. Even if it's "this is really a problem that needs to be worked up" vs "eh... probably a problem you can let sit for a while," that can be useful.

The wellness program that kcoughli referred to is actually a very good deal. Definitely worth making use of if you're interested.

Regarding residency .... It's a big secret subjective process. I know people who have gotten residency and people who haven't. It <seems> to be about like you'd expect; the ones that get it have worked at it since day 1 (staying here in summers, getting a job, all that stuff). The ones who don't ... haven't done that stuff.

Does Minnesota use pluses and minuses for grading (i.e. A+, A, A-, B+, etc.)?

Sometimes. Our classes all did last semester, but most of them this semester don't seem to.

Is there an attendance policy for lectures? I think my tour guides mentioned that the lectures are recorded, so I was wondering if some people watched the lectures instead of attending class.

Is there an attendance policy for lectures? I think my tour guides mentioned that the lectures are recorded, so I was wondering if some people watched the lectures instead of attending class.

Again it depends on the instructors/professors. Some of them opt out of lecture capture (which is a big shame because I personally get about 10x more out of watching the lecture capture than sitting in class... but I digress), some do in class mini quizzes (clicker questions) for points, some classes that are pass/fail send around an attendance sheet to sign off, etc and so on. So it really depends on the class.

Personally, I have a big problem with 8am classes and when I do attend, I tend to fall asleep or only maintain consciousness by distracting myself on Facebook, SDN, etc. So if the 8am class for the day is lecture captured without clicker questions I tend to skip and then watch the lecture capture at home (if its working). Honestly this works much better for me, I can speed up the video to 1.6-1.8x normal speed, pause if I need to, and generally finish the lecture in much less time while remaining more focused on the material.

Apparently some professors are kicking up a fuss about the lecture capture because student attendance has dropped dramatically in some classes. Personally I don't see what the problem is, its not being disrespectful to learn in a way that works best for you and wouldn't it be more disrespectful to show up and not pay attention/fall asleep?

I digress, but I hope I sort of answered your question.

Yeah. Our class (c/o 2015) hasn't had a problem with attendance, and we've been pretty successful in having profs lecture-capture. Most of our courses are lecture captured. But apparently the second-year class (c/o 2016) has attendance issues, so lecture-capture is being largely (or completely?) removed for them. Hopefully that will be done on a class-by-class basis and not impact subsequent classes like your year and others.

I think the second-year issue is kinda silly - why is attendance such a big deal to teachers? If students pass classes/tests, and outcome assessments remain stable, then why are people being punished for managing their time? If students AREN'T doing well, then why isn't it being addressed on a student-by-student basis? And, why are teachers choosing to punish people who normally attend but miss class when they're sick? Why are they trying to force sick people to come to school and create a public health problem? Why are they discouraging people from professional growth opportunities like conferences (I've gone to conferences every year because I could rely on lecture capture to catch up.)? Why have they invested so much money in the lecture capture system if they aren't going to maximize the return on that investment? None of it makes sense to me.

And I agree with you: Do you want attentive students in class? Or do you want half to be attentive and half of them talking, FB'ing, and being disruptive because they don't want to be there?

I dunno. I'm just glad my class had pretty good attendance so it wasn't an issue and our classes were lecture-captured. And that I'm done with the didactic portion really soon now and don't have to worry about any policy changes with regard to lecture capture. 🙂

Just a quick question...has anyone received a welcome or financial aid packet or are they waiting until we send in deposits?

Just a quick question...has anyone received a welcome or financial aid packet or are they waiting until we send in deposits?
My understanding is that financial aid is awarded in July and according to my email from UMN they will be sending additional information shortly after the April 15th deadline. So I would look for some sort of welcome packet/email around that time, but if you look at their financial aid site it does say that financial aid is not awarded until July. I sent my deposit in a month ago and have not received a welcome email or anything but I will be anxiously looking for it around April 15th!

Does anyone keep getting the feeling that they are forgetting to do something before the April 15 deadline? Even though you've been over the email and list a million times, and have checked everything off that you need to do. I get paranoid that I'm forgetting something and then I won't be able to go. :nailbiting:

If you're seriously stressed about it, you could call/email Karen to make sure you completed everything.

I guarantee you that so long as you replied and accepted your seat, they won't drop you from the class for blowing a deadline. They will send you a "yo, incoming student, you forgot to sign X or send in Y" email and that will be that. 🙂 🙂

Really. I promise. They're very nice people. 🙂

Relax and enjoy your summer!!!! School is a bizarre mix of hectic, fun, frustrating, challenging, and crazy. You might as well make the most out of the next 5 months!!!!

I've been considering doing the DVM/ MPH program. Does anyone know (maybe @dovelover?) if students who start the program in their second year are able to complete their MHP at the same time as their DVM? Or does it take them longer?

You definitely can still finish it by that time, if you choose. I have a couple friends starting the program this summer going into their second year. I'm only 7 credits in so far since I didn't go to the public health institute last year, and I fully expect to be able to be mostly done except for a few transfer credits by the time I enter clinics. You definitely need to load up your summers, but it's doable. I'll be almost halfway through my degree by the end of the summer (and that's a scary thought...). If you don't work full time in your summers, it's pretty reasonable to fit in 6 credits of online courses, which is considered a full time courseload (doable if you work full time, but tough... that's what I did last summer and I had no free time 😱). If you're able to attend the public health institute full time for all three weeks as opposed to just half days or only 1 or 2 weeks, you can reasonably get another 6 credits there (plus 1 credit for the required power of collaboration course your first summer). Technically you can fit in as many as 7 credits (not including the collaboration course), but they consider 5-6 credits to be a fairly rigorous schedule, so not sure I'd recommend it. All that adds up to about 12 credits. Do that both summers, and use all possible 14 transfer credits, plus the 1 credit of your externship that is required to be through the school of public health rather than vet rotations, and you're almost there! Plus, although it's an option, you don't have to do your 3 master's project credits as transfer credits from the vet school if you would rather use all 14 transfer credits on regular classes from your vet curriculum (I'm hoping to do this, but I can't figure out with the new curriculum if all the classes on this list of possible transfer classes will still exist)... which brings you to a grand total of 42 credits! (That's how many you need).

I'll also throw in that there is a 1 credit public health elective you can take spring of your 1st year in the vet curriculum at UMN (it's lots of fun, despite being an evening class 🙂), and you can transfer that into your MPH even if you haven't started your MPH yet. So, you can get a 1 credit head start!

Hopefully that all made sense and wasn't more information than you were looking for.
