Does the school offer health insurance or does each student have to find their own? Just wondering so that I can start exploring options because my parent's insurance is kicking me off this summer!!! :drowning:

In the past, Mizzou has offered health insurance to students for something like $1600/semester. They are in the process of changing their policy due to the Affordable Care Act, so the new option hasn't been announced/determined yet.
 
Hello everyone! I'm class of 2012 from Mizzou's CVM 🙂 When I was there, most vet students just did the AVMA GHLIT (no longer available). You will have a sort of student insurance that lets you use the student health center (which I used all the time), but you should also have regular insurance. The AVMA GHLIT set up their own health insurance exchange for vets and pre-vet students. It might be worth checking out. I'm now practicing in the Columbia, MO area so send me a PM if you guys have any questions. Lol...I can't believe we're already to class of 2018. Graduation still feels like yesterday!

I doubt you will hear much if you are on the wait-list until after April 15th.

There might be, but they send out about 120 acceptances for 60 OOS slots- so unless more that 60 decline before that deadline, you won't hear much until after 🙂

That's what I was thinking but when I emailed Kathy she said it would much likely be before April 15th. we shall see

I will certainly keep my fingers crossed for before that! But I'd anticipate it will be right near that deadline or after- my one roommate was called April 16th!
 
I think most people probably let the school know the week before April 15th, not necesarilly on April 15th. Remember though, we are not ordered on the waitlist. When seats start opening the admission committee will meet again. She told me most people from the wait list who will be offered admission will know by May 1st.
 
Last year people didnt start hearing until after the april 15th deadline. :xf: they can start telling you guys sooner.
 
Does Mizzou require that you buy a certain computer/tablet for classes? If not does anyone recommend anything??

Mizzou doesn't require anything in particular. A lot of people use IPads. They seem to have occasional problems with getting notes/power points to load, but not super frequently. I just use my laptop for notes. I have a Lenovo Yoga 13 which I really like for the most part. There are also a ton of people who print out notes and handwrite more on them.
Basically you should be fine with whatever. We have our own IT department in the vet school and it is equipped to work on any computer/tablet so if anything goes wrong you just run upstairs.
The only other thing I will say regarding apple products is that you can't speed up our lecture recordings and you can't have access to histo slides on your own computer unless you run windows in parallel. That would really be a problem for me personally, but I do a lot from home and not at school.
 
I have a Macbook and an iPad I use for notes- and sometimes written notes if they are provided. Not had a problem with any of them! I don't use the aperio histo slides, so not an issue for me. And if you use the tegrity app on your iPad, you can speed up the lectures (just not on my macbook). Most of our class has some kind of tablet or laptop for notes.

On another note, I highly recommend you all come out for our open house in April!! It's April 12th, a Saturday! I flew out here with my mom (since I came alone to my interview) to show her the vet school, I met one of my roomies, scouted for a place to live, and checked out the town. It is a great time!! And if anyone is planning on coming out, we should do a large group dinner so you can meet some of your future colleagues!!
-As always, I'm open for questions! But I may be a bit slow to reply this week due to finals coming up... AHHH!!!

Aw man! I won't be able to make the open house... so bummed 🙁, sounds like a great time!! 🙂 I will be coming in June-ish to scout out living and such, can't wait!

Have you been to the open house at VRMCVM? It's like that- lots of tours, activities, clubs come out, basically all the first and second years help in some way. Just a way for the public to see the school! It's just a fun day all around!

Well...I don't really count as a new student, and I won't be at open house, but I will be there in April looking for a place to live and figuring out my life and would love to meet up with you, @Kpowell14 @wildcatj @DickVetPlease and whoever else is around 🙂
 
I don't think I'll be able to come to the open house, but I'm planning on driving out early June to look at housing! On a totally different note, has anyone noticed this thread has had the most replies out of all the c/0 2018 school threads this year!?.... that's a lotta love. :biglove:

I'm super interested in coming for the open house, and count me in for any get togethers/ dinners 🙂 I'm just over in central Illinois so it's fairly easy for me to come to Columbia.
 
When it gets closer to open house time, I'll make a post here and on the class facebook page (be sure you join!!) about it! I'm sure that some of my friends would love to join us as well!
 
Any current students feel like your interview went horrible and you still got in? Is there hope? 🙁 feeling kind of bummed right now

not a current student yet, but I felt like mine didn't go so great when it was over, but I still got in.

Well, one of my roomies here said hers didn't go so well (an OOS student) and ended up on the waitlist, but is here now!
And when talking to Doug (our recruiter, who is amazing!) said that one student who interviewed sat there and talked about how much they liked cows for 5+ minutes... and she got in 😉

I thought I bombed mine and still got in! The first question they asked me was "In my own words, please give us your definition of science?" Totally caught me off guard and I did not think I would come back from my terrible response, but it all worked out 🙂 Don't worry!

eek, that would be a tough one for me as well, too many options, and I'm too darn indecisive. My interview at Mizzou went very well, for Ohio though, I was not as confident. My toughie was "Tell us what failure means to you? Also, tell us about a time that you failed and what you learned from it?" Despite not feeling all too great about that interview, I still got accepted as well, so by no means give up hope!

Yeah I know "eek" is exactly what I wanted to say in my interview! Well I hope you choose to come to Mizzou next year! I looks like you have a lot of great options 😉
 
First time posting on here, somehow just came across this. 🙂 I'm in an interesting spot with housing next semester if anyone is needing a place to say. My brother is in law school, so I already put down a deposit on the place next to him. I know that is risky since I don't know if I'm getting in or not, but he has a friend who will basically rent from me if I don't get in so I'm not out any money. Long story short, if anyone is thinking about places to live I am looking for a roommate. Hit me up!
 
More questions in state students 🙂 on the off chance I actually get in, any recommendation on where to look for rental housing? I'm super nervous about it because we have 2 dogs and 2 cats. We'd prefer a house but if someone decides to rent to us, I won't be picky.
