Generally, I'd say stay away from the north side of town. I honestly don't know much about it, but that's what I've heard- I hardly ever go up there, so I'm not so sure what is so shady about it. I personally live on the south side, and really like it down here! I've got a place with two fellow first years- it is a '4' bedroom duplex (which is really only 3 bedrooms since the 4th has the only door going to the backyard... not a bedroom I'd want). We've got a small fenced in yard. Not the nicest place, but we get what we pay for. And of course, stay away from any big apartment complexes that cater to undergrads.

There are some nice places north of 70, if you go north of 70 and east of 63 you're usually ok. I live over on the west side of town and it's ok, but it's a bit of a drive to school.

There are nice places north of 70 and west of 63 as well. That's where I've lived for the past 3 years, and plan on living for the last year as well. Lots of my classmates live in the area too. Not much undergrad housing up this way... I actually share a duplex with a vet who works at the university.

I'm glad to hear there are some nice places up that way! I've heard mostly negative things. I just never venture up there to see the nicer neighborhoods.

Yeah, it's funny how that message spread. I definitely heard the same thing before I moved here, but I do love the area I live in! I rent through Dexter Management, but I have friends at Jenne Hill, and other places in the area. They're all pretty nice. My neighborhood has lots of families and it's nice and quiet!

Yay cowdoctr! I already mailed mine and am wondering if I will get some sort of verification that they received it? I just don't want my $500 deposit to be floating around lost :/

mailing my deposit this weekend! yay mizzou![/quote

I sent mine certified, where it would require a signature upon being delivered!

I sent my deposit in a few weeks ago also. I called Kathy about a week after I sent it in and she still hadn't received it. I was just concerned about when they would deposit the check (just trying to make sure I always have enough in the bank) and she said she would cash them in a few weeks when a lot more people have sent them in (just in case you were wondering also). I will probably call her again next week to see if they have received my check because I am paranoid. 🙂

I sent mine a few weeks ago. They got it but never sent a confirmation. I emailed Kathy to confirm and she replied the same day.

If I remember correctly they deposit them in big batches. So don't worry if yours doesn't come out of your account for a long while. Check in with Kathy if you're worried about it though!

does anyone know if there are any opportunities to work or volunteer in the vet school this summer?

When are you planning on moving out here? If you wanted to work in the pathology lab, that job opens up late in the summer and goes through your second year... I believe? I hear it is a pretty decent job and will earn you enough residency money by the time you need it. Other than that, I'm not really sure about paying jobs- volunteer jobs I'm not certain of either, but I'd say enjoy your summer while you can 😀

the pathology lab one sounds cool, but I'm not sure about working during the school year. how could anyone hold a job in vet school...is that possible?

I work in another school's path lab 12 hours a week. It's doable, but I personally wouldn't want more than 10-15 hours per week. It was tough to manage time first year but the little cash I get for working is definitely worth it because that's less loans to take out. I'm mostly in it for the experience and networking though.

I personally would not want to work during the school year, but people do! A fair amount actually- working in the Small animal and equine ICU, pathology lab, and even research labs. I would prefer to make my extra cash in the summer- though, it would be nice to have a bit of a steady income (no matter how small). I'm shooting for a residency, so I need to keep my grades up, so I don't think I'd feel comfortable having a job during the year. Everyone is different, so there really is not a simple answer to that.

Old topic but I live north of 70, along with several other first years (our president, two girls I carpool with), and we all like it. It's generally cheaper than other parts of Columbia, and it's pretty nice. There are some shady parts (Texas Ave), but I personally think it's worse near Douglass Park, which is near the middle of town. I wouldn't rule out the north side, I'll personally be here for 3.5 more years!

Does anyone know what we will find out about financial aid options for class of 2018??

I have to admit, I interviewed today and absolutely fell in love with Mizzou!! :biglove:

Today was the last interview day, and I know letters won't go out for a few more weeks... but now I'm going to stalk my mailbox like crazy.... I only interviewed a few hours ago but I want to know now! :nailbiting:

So glad you loved it! I wish I could have been there to help with interviews this weekend but I had prior commitments. Fingers crossed for you!

As far as financial aid I don't think you'll hear much until the summer.

And as for financial aid I believe

About to send in my deposit to Mizzou, so excited! I loved Mizzou! Are any current students able to tell me a little more about the typical block schedule? You only have the first 6 week summer right? And when do clinicals start exactly? If you even have a calendar I could see that would be great I'm just curious!

I found this while I was looking at Mizzou's website: http://calendar.cvm.missouri.edu/ It's quite fun (and slightly terrifying/overwhelming) to look at!

Thanks Ashgirl- I was going to direct you all to the calendar. I hope you can at least pull up each individual block- Everyone takes the same classes for those 11 blocks (pretty much)- then after that you are in clinics!!
So, for IP1 and 2- when you first start- they ease you in more into a semester rather than a block- I think it makes the transition a bit easier. The only difference is in October you get an added class (Neuroscience).
Starting in IP3 after winter break- you are thrown right into the block schedule. We just finished this block a few weeks ago and we were told it is one of the worst ones (and I believe it! It was rough!) Now we are into our second week of IP4 right now and our schedule is already a TON better.
I do like the block schedule myself- focusing on only 5 or 6 classes is better (at least for me, I think). Yeah, we do have finals every 8 weeks as well (minus those first two blocks where finals are in December only). We go through the end of June in the summer and then only get 6 weeks of summer (another downer) but we do get into clinics in October of our third year, which is fantastic.
As far as schedule wise- you will be in class most of the day just like any other vet school. There are some exceptions, and I definitely love the days where I can have an afternoon to myself. For you first years next year- Usually you'll have a lecture or two in the morning, followed by anatomy lab (3 days a week in the fall and 4 days a week in the spring). Lunch is after that and then more classes or microanatomy labs in the afternoon (which alternate).

It will take you all a good few months to adjust how you study, how you take notes, and to try to perfect it. I ended up switching a few times and I think I've finally figured out a good way now after 3 blocks. I guess now I'm rambling on a bit, but I do enjoy talking about Mizzou and the school. Let me know if you have more questions!

we also get a 6wk summer off after 2nd year too.

Yeah I think I'm still working on my note-taking. I do it different for most classes. I was almost completely computer-based IP1 and 2, and I've switched to almost completely powerpoint based for this block. That's something that you will just need to tweak as you go. Some classes you'll even want to throw your arms up and burn any attempt at note-taking (like anatomy right now for me). But you will figure it out. If you make it here, you're smart enough to figure it out, I promise.

do you guys feel like you get a lot of hands on experience?

do you guys feel like you get a lot of hands on experience?

The first 2 years we have 'Some' hands on experience.
During IP 2 ( the 2nd 1/2 of 1st semester) you have a neuroscience class that utilizes Live animals and we learn the beginnings of how to do a neuro exam and different neuro things. During IP3 you start clinical skills which gives you experience with cows, horses and small animal. So far we have done the Cow part and are currently working with the horses. During clinical skills we are taught basic animal handling/ we go over anatomical structures which you can see on a live animal (instead of the anatomy lab), learn about heart and lung fields for auscultation, And basically how to "feel up" the animals for a physical exam. In a couple weeks we will begin the SA portion and im not sure how that will go.

What you have to keep in mind is that the first 2 years at Mizzou are dedicated to classroom learning bc starting in October of 3rd year you head to clinics. We get more clinical experience than most other Vet schools in the country so in the long run your gonna have more hands on experience than your colleagues that go to the normal 3+1 school.

Another thing to rememeber is that Mizzou offers you 'blocks' during clinics that you can use as free time to do with as you please... that means you can study for the Navle, or go do interviews for prospective jobs or go do awesome preceptorships across the country getting even more clinical experience!

I just got home from a dinner for the company I represent at the school and the seniors that were there were talking about all of the awesome preceptorships that they have done all over the US- Las Vegas, Arizona, Florida just to name a few. One girl did 50 cat/dog spay/neuters at a clinic in just over a 3 week span and that was only 1 of the preceptorships she had done!

Seriously though, Mizzou has some Great opportunities!!!

How are you other in-staters dealing with the wait to hear back?? Mizzou is my last shot for this year, so it's pretty much either there, or a gap year of getting more shadowing/work experience for me. I feel like everyone else has heard back from all the schools they applied to already, while I'm still having to tell everyone that I have no idea where I'll be in the fall! I'm trying to focus on my classes and my internship and graduation in less than two months, but I just want to know already! :arghh:

I'm right here with you. I haven't heard anything at all either. I have two other schools I'm looking at but I obviously can't make any decisions until I hear back from Mizzou... I really really wish they would let us know already!

ETA: It looks like last year in-staters found out the last week of March (around 3/28), and the last few years before that it was around the 24th. Here's hoping we find out within week or so! :luck:

I think I was just looking at the same threads you were! The thought of finding out this coming week is scary, but exciting! :xf:

Yep, I have been obsessively checking every single Mizzou thread out there and seeing when people found out in the past.. I hope this year's decisions are on track with everyone else and not too close to April 15th like they said it might be... I might have a panic attack if we have to wait that close to the deadline! 😱

Yeah, if I remember correctly Kathy said at my interview that they would try to have letters out by April 15th, which seems so far away. :/ I'm tempted to email her and see if she knows when they'll be sent out!

AHH! Speaking of which! I just emailed Kathy earlier today... they were sent out yesterday!! We should hear very very soon! 😀

EEEEEK! :nailbiting: Thanks for the info, I'll be watching my mailbox like crazy Monday and Tuesday!

Idk if it makes a difference or not but we are all on spring break starting this week. Not sure if the admissions office is in is not at that time.

Fingers crossed for you ISers! You'll find out shortly!!

ISers check your mail!!!!! I was stalking the mail today..... and I got accepted!! 😍 I can't believe it!:biglove:

I freaked the mailman out by screaming when he handed me the big brown envelope but I am SO stoked... Looks like I'm going to Mizzou in the Fall!! :soexcited:

Yayyyy congratulations Ashgirl! I'm in class right now and I'm itching to get home and check! But I did get a call today that I got the job at a vet clinic that I applied for, so even if this isn't my year for vet school, I've got something lined up! 🙂

Apparently I'm one of 25 applicants still on the list for 10-15 anticipated seats. Then I go on the waitlist... or I am already on the waitlist. I can't tell from the vaguely worded letter.

No letter yet for me. 🙁 But my apartment's mailbox is teeny tiny, so maybe the mail carrier just couldn't fit the big envelope in there! 😉 :xf:

Wait, what? That does sound really confusing...

Let's hope so! Perhaps good news will come tomorrow! 🙂

It says "Your application will remain on hold until April 15th. At that time we will extend additional offers to fill the remaining seats and establish the pool of alternate candidates. We anticipate there will be ten to fifteen unfilled seats. You are one of twenty five applicants who will either be offered an available seat or placed in the pool of alternate candidates."

My interpretation is that I am on the waitlist now, but my roommates think the "pool of alternate candidates" is the waitlist. Thoughts?
