University of New England Application Thread

no drivers license >>. Getting it this year before pharmD school starts. It's too expensive to park a car in nyc, and the subway is so much convenient for me.

Ok. check to see if your hotel has a hotel shuttle service. Also, after the interview, you could get a ride with other applicants who are heading back to the airport. I gave someone who interviewed with me a ride to the airport. Good luck.

Btw, I just booked a car for $35/day (tax/fees included) yesterday. SouCal10, how'd you rack up to $160?? lol

I heard there's a northeastern storm coming up this week. I don't know if I should even drive around. =X

d2rx, so have you decided to stay with UNE?

LOL. I thought about that too. $160!? She probably upgraded to an SUV or luxury car of some sort. I sent in my $1000 deposit for UNE. Good Luck at the interview.

I know. I was pretty stupid. I was so wiped out after a very long flight from CA, I didn't pay attention. My car was a Malibu that came fully loaded with on-star service, satellite radio (which I didn't need), and the insurance for 2 days. Total was $160 for 2 days. Haha. I guess I got jacked badly!! Can't wait to come back there and find that NICE lady!

LANDED IN PORTLAND, MAINE!! I feel like a girl who finally saw Christmas. There's snow everywhere! It's beautiful and ... COLD.

i got the march 4th interview with university of new England. anyone else?

One of my friends got March 4th 🙂 Best of luck!

Hi guys, I will be ordering my tickets around monday. First thing first, do you know if the taxis run around 7 in the morning? because my interview is around 8:15 in the morning around feb 18th.

Does anyone esle have a interview that day? and how much does it count for the taxi to get from the airport to the college?

The front desk at La Quinta gave me $2 off coupons to a taxi service.
ASAP Taxi - (207) 791-ASAP (2727)

24-hour service and you can call them the night before and request them to be at the hotel at 7:45 am 🙂

Also, if you're flying into PMW Airport, right outside of baggage claim there WILL be taxi's waiting for you. Althouh, I'd suggest contacting your hotel if they have complementary shuttle service. (La Quinta and Comfort Inn does, I noticed)

Final thoughts after the Jan 28 interview:
- 50 interviewing candidates
- informal/casual interviewing environment
- snow everywhere!
- Issac is TALLLLLL

I think I love this school 😍

should i still come to the march 4th interview with UNE if i already got into my first choice pharmacy school-LECOM-ERIE?

Yes because you could change your mind. ...

SO official PharmCAS deadline for UNE changed from Feb 1 to March 1... what do you guys think? GO!

can you give more feedback about the interview? about the school? I MIGht go to the interview with UNE just for the experience, i will most likely turn down the feb 4th interview with husson

The admissions meeting committee is this Friday, btw, due to inclement weather. We should hear from them by the middle of next week.

(I couldn't wait so I emailed last night. lol)

:xf:

Hope everyone is doing well. Hang in there!

Do check it out, though it's pricey if you're coming from the other coast. lol. The insurance for the car costs like an arm and a leg. I would suggest taking the taxi if you don't want to drive in the snow.

Yah, Isaac is tall! He looks like 7ft from my angle. haha.

Maybe they'll accept at least 80% of the interviewing candidates like the last session. lol. Crazy, 21 out of 25 accepted.

omg, your so awesome! thanks!

they have complementary shuttle service. (La Quinta and Comfort Inn does, I noticed)
double awesome! =D

Taxi cost from La Quinta to UNE with a $2 off coupon... $8 ($10 full price). Cost from La Quinta to Miyake Sushi or downtown Portland with $2 off coupon... $6.

Interview day...

- Check in with Isaac
- Have breakfast and chat with the other applicants
- Dr. Kurt Cyr will go over the entire curriculum of the Pharm.D program
- Split into three groups (waiting, writing sample, interview).
- Lunch time with your tour guides
- Tour of the College of Pharmacy building and of the Portland Campus (gym? library? on-campus eating?)

Actual interview: http://www.studentdoctor.net/schools/school/une-pharm

I think what sealed the deal for me was....
- Brand new pharmacy building
- UBER SUPER friendly and warm faculty
- Curriculum is very diverse, thought-out and structured. (Dr. Cyr mentioned about splitting a course to be part 1 then part 2, rather than part 1 and 2 during the same semester)
- Faculty has super diverse backgrounds and they work together intensely to best teach the students.
- Partnerships with like 5-11 medical centers in Maine?!
- Inter-professional mingling with the other professional schools
- Method of learning is from each other and giving feedback
- IPPE and APPE from their diverse preceptors
- Definite growth in the pharmacy field after graduation

P.S. wondering about where to eat?

MIYAKE sushi
http://www.yelp.com/biz/miyake-portland
Call for reservation

The Street Company is pricey but I heard the lopster diolovo is good.

Local 188, Fore Street and Five Fifty-Five are good according to one of my interviewers...

I love to eat.

Haha, you sound like a sale person. It's true though. They have an internship site just for alternative med, although it's very competitive. Case study with UNE's med students via conference meeting (very interesting).
This cycle's result is a bit late. Not till next week? Our cycle's result was less than a week, but then again we only have 25 candidates. Some of them already turned down their acceptance I heard 🙁.
Good Luck!!!!

Acceptance e-mails sent out!!

I just got mine 30 min ago! 😀

Congrats !!!
Now you have to find a way to cough up $2000 for deposit if you decide to go! You're Jeannie right?

I just received an email yesterday from Isaac for the March 25 interview. What are things that I should know ahead of time? This is actually my first pharmacy interview.

darn that's a lot of money lol, I thought it was like 500$-1000$ for a deposit. The tuition is 30,000 a year right?
31,000 a year for the tuition, plus books, library and health insurance it comes close to 36,000. The deposit is 2 payments of 1,000. One is due now and the other one is due in June.
Regis is about 3000-4000 more expensive for the tuition, and their tuition goes up 2000 per year.

Yes sir! 🙂

I got an interview invitation to Notre Dame of Maryland yesterday... I'm flying out there to check it out but so far... my <3 is set on UNE.

Baltimore, Maryland is apparently like 4th in the nation with the highest homicide rate and 3x the rate of Los Angeles... kinda sketch?

😍

I heard that school is a bit easy too. It's not accredited either right? I have an interview with Regis in Denver CO on March 4th. It's a Catholic school, and I am not Catholic. Nice neighborhood. Tuition is even more expensive than Maine, but it's closer to CA. Urg!!!
I thought Maryland should be quite and boring, I didn't know that they have people running around killing people/ Scary @_@. When is your deadline for the first deposit for Maine? The school seems really nice. I like it a lot too!

when is your interview with UNE? LET me know your feedback after the interview please. my interview with UNE is on march 4th but i might turn it down because i know i'm already going to lecom-erie-my first choice.i don't know if i should go interview with UNE just to gain some interview experience. i don't know if it's worth the money

Talked to IsaaC Stickney and says I have a good chance for an interview - hoping it comes in ink now haha.

to any current UNE pharmacy students there, where do you guys do your APPE stuff. Is it possible to do your rotations in California as long as they are certified. did any of you find problems trying to get a rotation you wanted to go but could not due to administration problems. this is definitely looking well ahead of my future considering if I havent got any schools yet, but UNE will be a plus if they allow you to do your rotations out of state, since im trying to get a job in Cali.

LIU was the shortest interview ever, just 20 minutes interview, nothing else. i was interviewed by a faculty and a alumni. i feel like since they didn't give a tour or presentations about their program. it was informal. i did not like it. thanks AND good luck and keep posted about UNE.

From the curriculum description, it's possible but very difficult. They want to have you do your APPE through their dept but if you find a preceptor that will take you and fulfills their requirements then yay but more hoops for you to jump through.

they have preceptors for.... compounding pharmacy (COOL!) and nuclear pharmacy... that hecka stuck out to me

I feel the same about Notre Dame of Maryland. Female and Catholic university. Their SOP is co-ed... I'm not Catholic either... nice looking neighborhood with apparently an Asian community... with PHO and well known for their crab cakes. not that much closer to CA but at least warmer than Maine 🙂

Hi SouCal10 and jkong,

First of all, congratulations to the both of you for already being accepted to UNE.

I noticed you are both from Southern California, just like me. I read back a few pages to notice that you both "fell in love" with UNE. Could you elaborate as to why that was? I've spent my entire life in CA, so I find it hard to believe an east coast school would be that attractive to people from CA. Is the school in a more rural city so it feels more like CA?

I have an interview at UNE on March 4th, so I'm just trying to prepare myself the best I can for the environment, weather, etc. differences between Maine and CA.

Thank you both in advance!

hey SouCal10, dballa and jkong. its nice to here a couple of socal residents going to the east coast weather. jkong, where did you hear about the nuclear pharmacy thing, i think only 12 schools have this in the nation and i am really interested in nuclear pharmacy so this would be huge (purdue is the only other school with nuclear rotations/classes). are all three of you guys planning to try to get rotations in Cali

Background: born and raised in San Fernando Valley (like omg totally); moved to sunny San Diego for undergrad. Family lives in San Gabriel Valley.

First of all, I totally understand everyone's fears, they're mine too. Portland, Maine is a polar opposite of what we get in the West Coast:

- No Westfield malls (there is a mall there with popular stores)
- No AMC Theaters (there is a Regal theater... same family as Edwards)
- No Jamba Juice, In-N-Out, Souplantation, chain restaurants (but you get unique, never found anywhere else restaurants and local brewries)
- Nearest IKEA is 2 hrs away in Massachusetts
- No Costco (super Walmart's apparently)
- Everyone takes neighborhood streets that look like one-ways
- No Lakers or San Diego Chargers (hockey?)
- It's no Hollywood, Chinatown, Downtown SD...
- No dim sum or Boiling Crab (but Miyaki... AMAZING SUSHI; yes there's Pho in Maine)
- No New York, New York in Vegas (but the REAL New York instead!)
- No Tijuana, Mexico (but Montreal, Canada/Quebec Canada! unlocked iPhones? yes!)
- Snowboarding galore!
- No Pacific Ocean (but the Atlantic!)
- 4 seasons (not just 2)

But why do I love UNE? Because it IS something different.

When you meet the faculty there, you can feel the warmth of their welcome. They all have open door policies and their offices are on the upper levels of the pharmacy building. Classes are reasonably sized and their facilities are brand-new. (way different than 300 student lecture halls in a 10 week quarter system in old crummy lecture halls with gum on your desk)

I like their inter-disciplinary learning and teaching method of putting the students in different scenarios and being evaluated by your peers. They hire actors to be the patients sometimes. Go to the interview and Curt Cyr will tell you all about the curriculum. I'm sorry if I'm not describing all of this enough. It's just my impression of what I saw and felt.

I think what also impressed me... was how nice the people are and how SAFE I felt as a female, walking around downtown Portland, Maine with another girl late at night. I didn't see any hobos or crazy drunk people. The buildings are absolutely beautiful. They have that traditional New England feel which is different because UCSD tries to have modern architecture and all.

Plus... in Maine... ONLY Husson and UNE have a pharmacy school. There is a huge demand for pharmacists in that state. (job security in Maine versus CA where they have UCSD, UCSF, USC, UOP, Western, Touro...???). Low level of crime and unemployment.

Forbes.com names Portland, Maine as "America's Most Liveable City" (NUMBER 1)
http://www.forbes.com/2009/04/01/cities-city-ten-lifestyle-real-estate-livable-cities.html

UNE ranked one of the "Best Universities" in the North by U.S. News and World Report.

UNE is small. Portland, Maine is small. Don't expect too much but at the same time, venture out of your comfort zone. It's suburbia next to a seaport. Plus, maybe its a good thing it's secluded because you're going to be busy studying anyway!

Nuclear Pharmacy info:
Independent nuclear pharmacy in Augusta, Maine. I didn't pay too much attention to the presentation but they do have an accepted preceptor with the only nuclear pharmacy in Maine.

*disclaimer: I could be very bias just because UNE did extend a hand and offer me an interview and an acceptance. Plus how professional and organized Isaac handled everything. Notre Dame seriously sent me an invitation and asked me to RSVP for 1 of the 4 choices of the following two weeks... losing 2 days of work and $300...*

shoutout: E. Lau... yes I should be UNE's PR hahahaha <3

I haven't heard anything about the nuclear pharmacy site; maybe I was sleeping during the orientation haha. It was very long, I was very interested at first, but then it just flew by. Dr. Kurt was very nice though and the Dean was like" You guys have to eat all the food, we had to order them at 5 am in the morning to get them in fresh!". I noticed that there was a very popular site that only offers alternative medications, but very competitive.
Yes they hire actors to be our patients and record the whole consultations, plus pharm students will work with nursing and med students from the other campus to work on cases.

@dballa1: I appreciated the fact that Maine's staffs take into account that we, from CA, have to travel so far to make the interview. In fact my interview cycle had 8 people from CA lol. Maine can be boring at time, since there is not much to do, but I am kidda like nature, so it fits me perfectly. Plus they have Acadia: One of the best national park in the US (4 hrs drive though). People from Maine are really nice (I am a little fed up with people from the OC). I was driving around downtown, there was a old lady driving 20 on a 35 street, and it was one lane only, traffic was backed up 10 cars, yet nobody honked haha. I think for us from CA, Maine would be something new, something rather interesting. I don't mind the boring part of it, cuz you'll be there to study not to play around anyway. Yes they don't have much Asian foods, but Maine is famous for Lobster, I had Lobster roll the day before I left. It was very good and different (Lobster season was out, so they didn't have whole lobster 🙁( ). The downtown was beautiful during Christmas season, Parking is a pain and confusing as heck though. They have arrow on the parking sign saying "DO NOT PARK" and depending on how the arrow points, you can park in front or behind the sign??!! Ask your P1/2 tour guide, they show you how to park your car without getting a ticket. I have some pictures of the beach and downtown on facebook and Kjong has pictures of the school during snow season, pretty cool.

The pharmacist who interviewed me will teach compounding the upcoming year, they had some expensive compounding machines installed. And apparently her pharmacy does compound for PETS. She told me she was doing some kind of Tuna mixed, because the cat refused to eat. I don't know if there is any sites strictly used for pet care, but they do do compound for pets.

About the rotations out of state, it seems to be a pain, since they do want you to stay in Maine after graduation. It will be possible, but yeah, hard to achieve. The weird thing is that they don't let you go back to the same pharmacy chain for rotation, like for me I can't go back to walgreens to do rotation, since I work there as a tech. It's actually a good thing, since you can learn more about the field, instead of going back to your comfort zone.

Hey Jkong did anyone else from your interview cycle get accepted? And about Catholic school, at Regis they teach "Faith in medicine" during the last year. It will be weird for me.

nice to hear some feedback from fellow socal ppl. apparently my undergrad school and living in LA spoiled me abotu weather and city living haha. but i guess thats what it takes to be a pharmacist.

i just have a couple of questions:

1.) are there a lot of out of state students at UNE? i think the class is only like 100 or so

2.) for the ppl that are from socal what airlines you took?

3.) anything in UNE you didnt like besides parking?

I got accepted about the same time as jkong via email, btw. 🙂 So far it looks like everyone on this thread who are from Cali got accepted. 👍

Congrats jkong!! 🙂

I wonder how many candidates got accepted...

My impression of Portland, Maine is like a drive to areas like Ramona, Julian, and Big Bear in SoCal. Spacey, not a lot of people, calm, and quiet (I live in a populated area). Portland is beautiful, but yea it doesn't look like there's much to do. Maybe cuz of the snow, I didn't feel like driving around.

There are ppl from all over the world who attend UNE. I didn't get to talk to alotta candidates at the interview, because we were broken up into groups. When we got together at the waiting room and were introducing ourselves, it seems like a majority are out of state.

I took United Airlines all the way.

I don't recall anything negative about UNE. I didn't like the toll roads and one-way streets in Portland though.

Just a random thought: I would think that the COP building is nested somewhere inside the campus. However, its along the public street... a block from a high school?

still debating whether to attend the march 4th interview with UNE or not? i need some insights

my interview with UNE is also on march 4th. i might see you there. i'm still debating whether to go to the interview or not. i'm from nj by the way

Hi, i was just wondering if you guys had to take the class "PHM 100 - Introduction to Pharmacy Practice/Professional Rescuer Training" for UNE. It's listed on the pre-pharmacy for UNE. I havent taken that class yet and also got an interview. Do you have to take that class before entering P1 in the Fall 2011?

Hey Jkong did anyone else from your interview cycle get accepted? And about Catholic school, at Regis they teach "Faith in medicine" during the last year. It will be weird for me.

Yes, I bonded with girls Katy and Kristie. They both were accepted 🙂

1.) are there a lot of out of state students at UNE? i think the class is only like 100 or so

2.) for the ppl that are from socal what airlines you took?

3.) anything in UNE you didnt like besides parking?

I believe there are a lot of out-of-staters. I at least know... Don from FL, a guy from NYC, another girl Thuy from SD... all over. However, UNE does reserve some seats for their pre-pharmacy undergrad students.

I personally like Delta. I stopped in Atlanta before Portland.

What I don't like about UNE...the idea of walking in the snow in their strict business dress code haha. Most pharmacy schools have a dress code but they're not warm and comfy as jeans with sweats. They do provide lockers to hold your shoes and whatever you want 🙂 24 hr library... small gym with not great ventilation... apparently all the pharm guys play basketball... a LOT.

Just a random thought: I would think that the COP building is nested somewhere inside the campus. However, its along the public street... a block from a high school?

Shortest road of education! There's an elementary school, middle school, high school, then UNE. It's in guiness world records from my understanding?

Yes, being CPR/AED certified is a pre-requisite. I recommend contacting your local Red Cross, pay $78, attend their 1 day or 2 day class and get certified. Your certification is valid for 2 years. I believe you can complete this after your acceptance before classes start.

If you are from the OC. No matter what you do, don't book flights from Long BEach, cuz I did and I had to transfer Twice with United Airways. They asked you to check in your carry on too, if it's a little bit bigger than mid size, cuz the plane is pretty small.
I think Dr. Curt said that there was a little bit more than 70 percents out of state for their current classes.

I think there are supposed to be 2 classes that we have to take after being accepted and before attending, one is CPR and the other one is something else I can't remember (I have to email Isaac!!) , I have to do both soon.

Here's a question for current students or already accepted...

When do they provide you with a financial aid packet? How do you know if they're awarding you a scholarship?

If I don't get a scholarship, oh well.
