Hey everyone, quick question.
I need to take a cell molecular biology course over the summer before classes start in the fall and I was wondering if anyone was in the same boat. I called the school and they told me that the University of Washington offers an approved online course but I am so lost. I couldn't find any information on Washington's website and was wondering if anyone out there has to or had to do the same thing. Any guidance would be much appreciated. 🙂

Hey Yes they have an online course available for it. Google search WSU online and it should come up....here is a link
you have to apply as a non degree seeking student first, then sign up for the class. Its 8 weeks long and starts May 6th

I've been pretty scared by the numbers I've seen for what my monthly payments would be to pay back loans as an OOS student. Is it really as bad as it sounds? $2500-4000/mo for 10-25 years?

My in state school would be like 1500-2k/mo for 10 years ..

It seems like it may be wiser to wait a year and try again for in state 🙁

I'm just really sad because I love this school so much. Someone please tell me there is something that makes paying that back much easier?

For example are there any sort of government jobs that would pay off loans?

There is an income based repayment option for paying back federal loans where you pay less when you first start working, then pay more as your income increases. However, whatever is not paid off after 25 years (I believe) is forgiven, but it counts as taxable income on your tax return. So, say you still owed $100,000 after 25 years, at 30% income tax you'd be paying $30,000 in taxes that year 😱.

As far as loan forgiveness programs, the only one I can think of is the rural vet program where you practice in an underserved rural area for a number of years and your loans are forgiven. The problem with that is the "rules" for the program are almost unreachable in most rural areas (like 80% of the cases have to be large animal and I've heard that it is impossible to earn a living wage trying to meet the requirements).

I will say that in state tuition played a huge role in deciding which school I was going to attend. Even with the different loan repayment options, I could not fathom taking out over $300,000 in loans to fund my education when my in state would be about $150,000.

Thanks for the information. I heard about the percentage one where it is forgiven, but I figured that's not worth it because of the taxes at the end.

Anyway, I'm studying for an embryology exam, but ill look at that website after!

it can be worth it within a certain amount. There is a cut off point where it is no longer worth it (theoretically). You would have to determine if with YOUR tuition if it would be worth it.

The other important thing to consider with IBR, is that as your salary increases, so does your payment. Theoretically, most people will end up with a salary that allows them to pay off their loan in full by the end of 25 years, and IBR just allows them to make smaller payments in the early days when they are making a lower salary. But, take that with a grain of salt, since it hasn't been around for 25 years to find out.

Rejected this cycle, but i do know phone calls happen and they go through the entire alternate list sometimes. Got a call from UT admissions this morning, I was asleep and the phone was on silent.
Found myself thinking "what if the impossible just happened?!"

Called by mistake.

Third time is a charm.

I wanted to pass along some info for those of us who hope to attend UT in the Fall....I spoke to Ms. Shepard and she was super nice as usual. She said they have started calling off the IS list but not off the OOS list yet. She said only one person has declined their OOS wait list position. I am still hopeful but I accepted Ohio State so it is a win-win for me.
Good luck everyone. If you hear anything please post!

Has anyone heard anything? I am on the waitlist and still hoping.
Is anyone thinking about giving up their spot if they get off another waitlist?

Hello....I am hoping that someone can help me with my decision. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of OOS Minnesota vs. OOS Tennessee. I have a chance to get off the waitlist at Minnesota and I do not know what to do. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Hey Skykitty! Did you get called off the Tennessee OOS waitlist?

No, not yet. I was told that I am in the first half of the first group so I am hopeful. I was called off MN's waitlist and need to decide by Tuesday. I said yes to Ohio but TN is my #1 choice. I can't keep giving away deposits and moving around because I am out of cash. I am afraid to say no to MN because I like them better than Ohio but not as much as TN. What if TN does not call???? I am afraid to give $500 to MN and then TN calls and I lose $500 for nothing. I am freaking out! Maybe I should just commit to MN. This is why I need help. Has anyone heard anything about the OOS list for TN?
Thanks everyone

Hey Skykitty: That really stinks. Your situation isn't the best for sure. I would encourage you to follow your heart, but you can't just take a leap of faith....because Tennessee might not come around. If you have committed to Ohio, but prefer Minnesota, and have been accepted to Minnesota, I would recommit to Minnesota. If Tennessee calls you, then go from there. Bur right now I would encourage you to make the choices off what's for sure. What's for sure is that you're into Ohio and Minnesota, and you like Minnesota better. I hope this helps!! Good luck 🙂

Does anyone know when final transcripts are due??

Does anyone know when final transcripts are due??

Well, fall transcripts were due 10 working days from the end of fall term, so I'm guessing spring transcripts are the same. I sent mine off today 🙂

Any new news out there for those of us on the waitlist????

Just wanted to let everyone know that we got an email from the Dean that UTK is back to full accreditation! 😀

Huzzah! Now you all can enjoy not having a million people thinking you're somehow "tainted".

I hope to visit just to see the facilities one of these days. I'll be calling on ya'll to show me around when I do and I'll return the favor if anyone comes to OK.

wooo hooo!! I knew they would get it back 😉 but I sure did get some crap for choosing a "limited accreditation" school over a full accredited school.

on another note..I'm hoping to come look at some apartments with my bf really really soon. I feel so lost about the whole thing...I would love to just buy a house but I doubt we'd be approved for a mortgage while paying off everything with school loans lol. just not sure how this is all going to pan out....also kinda nervous about how to get a hold of the remaining funds I need to cover tuition and fees after my federal loan is maxed out...any advice?

Ugh, yeah, the apartment search was pretty exhausting. We called ahead and scheduled appointments which saved a lot of time at the places we really wanted to see. Each viewing took around 30 mins and we were able to go to five different places on a Saturday.

As far as the loan, when your stafford loan is maxed out, you can take out a federal PLUS loan to cover the rest (up to the estimated cost of attendance as calculated by the school). It's a little higher interest rate, but it is still a federal loan. I'm not sure if you have to fill out extra FAFSA stuff for it though...?

I am still waiting for a call off the wait list. Any news bad or good????? I am so stressed....

Yeah, we just got the class roster yesterday and there are 87 people on it. 🙁

Any current students have any suggestions on where to live near campus, and cheap?

Depends on your definition of cheap....unless you live with roommates, Knoxville isn't really all that cheap in my opinion...

Yeah. I've been finding one bed/one bath for around 500. It's about the same as where I am now for 1 bed/1 bath. I have roommates right now, so I'm paying around 360. I just don't know a soul in Knoxville and don't want to do the Craigslist roommate thing again. You live with some weird people if you do that. I should(?) be getting in for the fall for the CEM grad program. Will find out in the next week or so. :luck:
Anybody know anyone looking for a roommate that would be all right with a cat? 🙂
