University of Waterloo Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hope all your interviews have been going amazing! I have been reading the threads for awhile now and I finally decided to make an account. You all have greatly inspired me with your positive thoughts and optimism.

I just have a question for you all. For the Waterloo interview, are we allowed to shake hands with the interviewer at the beginning of the interview? I am aware that we aren't allowed to shake hands at the UofT MMI stations but I am not too sure about Waterloo.

I'd appreciate your advices 🙂

Good luck everyone and thanks for being SO amazing 😉

Welcome to SDN :welcome:

To answer your question, I believe you can... but just to be safe, I guess you can just wait for them to extend a hand 😉

Hey everyone,

I just finished my interview and RC/WT this afternoon!
To those who are taking it tomorrow, all I can say is that the amount of friendliness and accommodation that the admissions personnel, pharmacy students, and the interviewers showed was very unexpected (in the best way possible)! I was impressed! I didn't feel like I was going to be doing an interview at all! In my opinion, a lot better than UBC's.

With that said, I feel like I aced the interview, but could've done better on the RC/WT. I won't say that I have a fighting chance, but I can't say that I failed it either. Maybe I only feel that way because I felt like the youngest one there, since everyone I talked to either just graduated with a bachelors or is attending graduate school.

All in all, my advice: once you're in the waiting room, try talking to the people around you (especially the pharmacy students), it really helps calm the nerves. And chances are, no matter how much last minute preparing you feel like you need to do, as long as you're calm, the easier it is to say everything you need to say.

That is all. Good luck! 🙂 👍

Thanks a lot for this great post... I've been super nervous today thinking about my interview which will be tomorrow, but your sayings really helped me calm down a little 🙂

Just 2 questions:
1) what were guys/girls wearing mostly? Did anyone dress casually at all?
2) did you hand-shake with everyone upon entrance to the interview room?

Ugh...i don't know if its just me but that interview was frustrating, my panel was certainly not welcoming and i didnt feel like the questions were all encompassing... I actually wasn't all that impressed w/ what i heard from the pharm students either...all together sadly im not impressed w/ waterloo 🙁🙁

hey guys, so i had my interview and test today. I was soo happy with how the interview went - i felt that they were super nice and cheerful, which was such a big relief... and they laughed at every joke i made which was a big boost of confidence LOL however, i think i could have done better with some questions, but overall for the interview and being put on the spot it was a great experience
as for the test, i wish i had more time for the essay part... i was really just scrambling down anything cuz i had 10 mins left and hadn't started the essay part - i hope that doesn't make me look too bad 🙁
i hope everyone else had a good time... i was looking around for some signs of any SDNers lol

44 days until final decisions! 😛

Hey fellow SDNers,

So just came back from Waterloo, I think the interview went well and the interviewers were nice for sure... BUT, I was a tad disappointed because I had such high expectations going in, and because I heard that people were "SUPER friendly" I was naturally expecting to see that today, but not everyone was THAT friendly IMO. And I have to agree with mochaswirl with regards to pharm students, sure they were nice but I think UofT pharm students did a better job at Welcoming us... altogether, even-though I liked the Waterloo experience today, I certainly felt more welcomed at UofT, and in my experience UofT people were "friendlier"... but that's a very subjective thing of course.

And for the WT/RC, I have to agree with yazahra89 100%... I mean holly cow, the time was SOOO limited, but thank God I managed to finish everything at the end 🙂

note to yazahra89: I, too, was looking fo signs of SDNer's and I think even saw you, as crazy as it sounds 😉 That could've been someone else, but I just had a feeing that it was you. And I'm very glad that you did very well today, I'm sure you're in 👍 😉

PM ME who you think i am, that sounds so mysterious lool

i'm worried about the test, i didn't get to use both blue pages.. i barely finished one page cuz i was rushing through it within the 10 mins to finish one last question about the article and figure out what to write 🙁 i'm worried now

Hey,

I just sent you a PM... I just made a typo in the message, I meant to say "I am NOT super sure it was you"

and I'm kinda worried about the WT/RC too, I'm more worried about that than the actual interview.

i know.. i'm in the exact same situation.. more worried about the essay, to be exact, than the interview.. but looking back at some forums, many people found the test to be hard or long and still got in so there's still hope! :luck:😍

Ya my only hope is that EVERYONE found the time limited, hence didn't have enough time to complete everything 100%.

Anywho, best of luck to all of you guys 🙂

To be honest, yes, in my opinion, the test was a scramble for me. Though the scientific journal was the component of the exam that I thought would be the hardest, I actually think I screwed up more on the personal essay. >< And after the written exam, they said that the interview and the RC/WT are weighted roughly equally when determining admissions, so this makes me worried.

@yazahra89: Don't worry about not writing enough, it's about quality not quantity, right?

@helloeveryone: Sorry you had a subpar experience. When I was there, they were super friendly. I feel partially responsible for getting your hopes up. 🙁 I actually haven't had my Toronto interview yet, so I don't know how they are compared to Waterloo.

You guys are great, I'm sure you'll be admitted! Month and a half wait, here we go!

yeah, i think it's more about the quality as well... except what quality is there when you're just trying to put anything together lol
anyways, i guess we'll just wait and see :xf:

Oh WOW, that is shocking!!! I always thought that interview was the main thing and the test was a very small portion of the overall admission decision... I was wrong I guess 🙁

And, please don't feel responsible at all... who knows maybe it was only today that Waterloo people were all tired and fed up because it was the last day... and other people mentioned too that some people seemed tired there!

i must say i'm glad it wasnt just me that felt this way, i thought i was just being biased toward uoft..
Now that i think about it though, maybe the reason was that this was the last day and they would have gone through sooo many people already and must just be really bored and tired with the whole process...not that this is an excuse really...
I agree about uoft, ever since leaving that interview and talking to the 1st years and some of the other applicants i've been super excited about uoft. Definitley didnt get that vibe from waterloo.

lol i'm not a big fan of mr. bean, but i just saw this and thought i could totally relate (especially at the very end and minus the attempts to cheat lol)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98V9cEYe6-A

OMG lol, that was HILARIOUS !!! And it reminded me a lot about the exam room today, we also had envelopes like they did 😉

And come on, you must admit you tried cheating like Mr. Beam a little bit... just kidding lol 😉

Yah, the thing is that for UofT it was their first round and they were "fresh" and enthusiastic... and Waterloo, today, was their very last round and sure they were fed up.

But none the less, UofT just had a more pleasant "vibe" as you mentioned 🙂 (I still love Waterloo and their amazing Co-op program though)

oh of course 😀.. that whole sneaking under the desk and coming up from the other side... i must say i pulled that off really well today no one even noticed 😉 lool

Really? They didn't mention this on Friday, can anyone confirm hearing this?

On Friday's rounds of interviews, everyone was really nice and welcoming (faculty, interviewers and first year pharm students) , sorry to hear that some of you didn't find this so. Perhaps it was just the people who were there that day.

Congratulations to everyone for finishing the University of Waterloo Interview and the Reading Comprehension/Writing Test 🙂🙂

I had my interview yesterday and I thought the interviewers and pharm students were extremely friendly. However, the Reading Comprehension/Writing Test was a bit brutal 🙁 Just like most of you, I struggled with time as I spent a HUGE chunk of time on the journal article and I ended up spending 20 minutes on the essay.

But most importantly, we all tried our best and I am so proud of all of us for making it this far 🙂

And I am not sure if the Reading Comprehension/Writing Test and Interview are weighted equally. I thought the reading comprehension test is just a pass or fail. I think that's the same with the interview because I feel that they make the decision right after you walk out of the room. So basically if you pass both the interview and the test, you are selected. This is just my opinion so please don't quote me on this 🙂

I cannot wait for the final decision and I hope that everyone on this forum makes it to UW pharm school 🙂 I can't wait to be classmates with such great people! 😉

Someone during my rc/Wt asked the proctor specifically about how the test is marked and how the interview/Wt are weighed. She clearly stated that the rc/Wt is not graded pass/fail but are actually marked and that the interview and rc/Wt are weighed 50-50. She also mentioned that once we are at this stage we are on a "clean slate" and that however we perform on that one day is all they look at! In my opinion, they say the components are 50-50 but I think interview really is what makes you or breaks you.. I could totally imagine the panel members discussing our performance and writing down "in" or "out" on our file the moment I walked out of the room and closed the door behind me 😛 but then again, as they say, it's a myth...

Nontheless, good luck everyone!!! Hope to see everyone in January!!!

Thanks so much for the clarification! 🙂🙂

Thanks a lot for sharing this. I must say I'm a little disappointed with Waterloo officials... I don't think it's fair that they shared this info with one group of applicants and not the others... I understand they said this in response to a question, but to keep it fair they should've share that info with all other applicants too.

Anyways, since yesterday all I've been doing is thinking about how the interview went and also about that one spelling mistake that I made on my essay 🙁

Don't let that one spelling mistake put you down 🙂 I didn't even get a chance to look over my essay due to the time constraints so I am sure I had a few silly grammatical or punctuation errors since I wrote the essay in a rush 🙁 Let's all treat ourselves for trying our best and remember, hardwork always pays off 🙂🙂🙂 I can't wait till the day of the final decision when I'll see all your posts on SDN saying "Yay I finally made it!!"

Hi All,
I have been following this forum for a while and finally decided to make an account!
I had my interview this weekend and had really nice interviewers... I had a good experience! I have UofT on the 14th so I have nothing to compare to like others.
I have a quick question...
I have completed a prerequisite this term and I'm not sure I did great after the exam (thermochem...🙁).
Does anybody know if they consider the actual mark or do they just look at a passing grade at this point?

Hello everybody,
Reading all you guys' replies and talks about interview ,I feel thrilled to try next year for pharmacy.Wish you all the very best.
I am eagerly waiting to apply for Waterloo Pharmacy 2013 January Start session. Can you guys ,who have been upto interview level for pharm 2012 cycle, please share your stats and experiences? I am particularly eager to find out what you guys have achieved as your over all cgpa out of 4.0 scale , prereq gpa and any or more extremes /or really low marks? , if any courses were repeated for mark upgrade and how will Waterloo look at any abnormalities in marks? I really appreciate your help . I am very passionate about pharmacy and I really want to try hard .

Welcome to SDN, nice to see some prospect applicants on this forum finally 😉

I think that sharing stats would be appropriate at this point too... we all know most of our marks by now, AND we all have finished the interviews... so knowing one other's stats can not help/hinder us in anyway 👍

avg: 81.2%
pharm experience: over 2 years retail + a few hours of hospital pharmacy volunteering
extracurricular: usual volunteering at festivals, community, tutoring, some sports etc
interview: it was pretty good
RC/WT: time was very limited, but I managed to finish everything 🙂

I can't wait to hear your stats guys 😉

Hey, I'm also pretty new to sdn. I went to the interview this past Sunday. my stats are:

avg: 80.9%
pharm experience: 4 months at a retail pharmacy (and counting.. 😛)
volunteer: over 100 hours at 2 different hospitals, tutoring, other community work etc.
extracurriculars: NLS and all the prior swimming courses, part of Co-op student association at university
interview: I think it went well, I was a bit nervous during the first 5-10 mins
RC/WT: I felt I did well, I left a good 30 minutes for my writing portion

And I have a question for anyone who may know or any pharmacy student: How much do you pay for tuition (with fees and everything) + how much for books (on average per year) ?

My stats are:
- all prereq courses completed
- average (using the midpoint ranges) = ~85%
- many years of pharmacy experience (since high school, in hospitals and retail)
- lots of ECs (lots of volunteering, societies at my uni (chem, bio, etc), and more)
- LOR by a pharmacist
- Interview: went really well, they were really nice and supportive.. 🙂
- RC/WT: I know I did really well on the article part of the test, but had only 10 mins left for the essay part.. time was limited but I managed to write down almost a page of great sentences (hopefully!). I completed everything, but the time was definitely limited.

42 more days! i really hope all of us here on SDN get accepted!

Here are my stats:

-avg: ~78%
-experience: 2 years in a retail pharmacy
-ECs: some overseas volunteering, research experience, currently working in a hospital
-Interview: hard to say, my panel was not so great, but presentation went very well, overall interview was mediocre...
-RC/WT: went very very well, got lucky with the essay as it was also the topic of my presentation

average: 79%

experience: 6-7 years in a medical setting - doing various jobs

ECs: 1 month pharmacy volunteering

Interview: panel was friendly, i was nervous which meant i spoke really quickly and i wish i gave more specific examples

RC/WT: I timed it out well, also had 30 mins for the writing section

.. this wait is killing mee :scared: .. what is everyone doing in the mean while, work and school?

I agree with you... just less than 6 weeks left, but I want to know now!
I'm working at a Pharmacy right now, so at least that's keeping me busy and my mind away from the long wait. =)

WOW, those are some very solid stats all you guys 😉 Congratz on all your achievements so far.

And even though we are all, technically, competing with each other, I REALLY like this "healthy" and supportive way of competing 😉 Hopefully we'll keep this system of support as classmates in near future 👍👍

p.s. those who haven't already, if you don't mind, please post some stats 🙂

i agree! all of you keep me from going crazy lol

Hey guys! Just thought I should share my experience and stats as well.

Avg GPA - 3.9/4.0
Pharmacy Experience - ~ 1 year retail pharmacy
EC - volunteering at hospital, sports, and tutoring
LOR - from pharmacist manager
Interview - To me, it was pretty good. The interviewers were really friendly. The 5-10 portion went very well, the question portion also went well, maybe one or two questions I didn't explain in detail as much as i would have liked.
RC/WT - went very well, I found the questions very easy and the essay topics weren't that challenging.

Anyways, I hope we all get in!
Good luck to you guys!

I was just wondering guys, how long did your interviews take?

Mine was WAY longer than the anticipated 30 min... it was just over 50 mins, so I don't know is it a good think that it was long or is it a bad thing? 😕

WOW, your GPA is crazy high, good job 🙂

but what is your average %? I think both Waterloo and UofT use % system not GPA.

I used the mcmaster conversion to calculate GPA, not too sure what it is % wise.

Your interview was 50 minutes?? Wow! How come it was so long? Mine was 30 minutes exactly.

well, presentation took about 15 min, questions ~ 25 min, and at the end, I asked them some questions and their answers to my q's took another 10 min...

but is it bad to have a longer interview?????😕

No, its not necessarily bad to have a long interview. Perhaps your answers were very structured 👍

Also, your presentation was 15 min?? wow! i thought it was only 5-10 minutes! My presentation was about 8 minutes to be exact.

Don't worry though, as long as your answers were detailed and you didn't waste time or struggle with the questions your fine.

i know my friend stayed in there for about an hour... lol he said they kept asking questions regarding the presentation and also took a LONG time answering the questions he asked them.. so don't even worry.. 👍

41 more days!

37 more days left... man, time's passing by slowly for some reason 🙄

35 more days leeeftttt 🙄

what happened to your countdowns yazahra89 ??? 😉

i've been trying to keep busy so that the wait doesn't seem so long!!

how's everyone doing?

lol, I know... the wait is already killing me one bit at a time 😡

This is probably the ONLY time in my life that I'm wishing for summer to be over quickly😉
